Most accounts of the Wrights skip over the good parts. This book gives you the nitty gritty details of the technical problems that cropped up along the way and how the boys solved those problems. I've never read a better account for people who are interested in aviation as well as the "human interest" part of the story.

A fascinating story - not just for flying enthusiasts

Centennial plans: (...)

For several years after their first successful flights in North Carolina, the Wright Brothers developed their planes and flew them outside of Dayton, Ohio. People would tell the folks at the newspaper about all this- "You really ought to do a story"- but evidently the newspaper people never even investigated this preposterous rumor... It wasn't until 6 years later, when the Wright Brothers made headlines all over Europe- for flying circles around everyone else in a flying competition- that they became famous in the United States.

Take that as a parable, if you think that you can learn from the news media everything / anything that's worth knowing.

A must-read as we near the centennial of flight

This book is the best telling of the Wright Story there is. It motivated me to read McFarland's collection of their writings, and put them in context. It also left me wanting to read the sequel to their efforts made by Curtiss.

Kill Devil Hill - a great book about the Wright brothers

If you have any interest in flying, or about the process of innovation, then this book is for you. Very readable and hard to put down. The popular myth about the Wright brothers seems to be that they tinkered around and sort of stumbled into discovering how to fly. Harry Combs clearly shows how this is not the case. It's not only amazing how the Wright brothers dedicated themselves to this task, it is inspiring. A fascinating book, and a must read for anybody interested in the subject of the discovery of human flight.

Such a shame that this book is out of print. I have 3 copies and gave away many when I could get them. I am a cook of 50 years and have a very extensive cookbook collection. This is an amazing cookbook and is my favorite among a hundred or more. Very simple dishes I've not found anywhere else and each one is delicious. If you can get your hands on one, don't hesitate.

I'm so sad this book isn't in print anymore because it is the perfect cookbook to give someone that doesn't know how to cook. She gives recipes for cooking steaks, baking potatoes, and other simple tasks. She also has wonderful, easy recipes that always turn out perfect. This is not a low-fat cookbook, but it is good! My favorite recipe in the book is Chicken with Mushrooms. The chicken is sauteed in a skillet and you add a little sherry. Delicious! Get a copy if you can.

This book was given to me by Lulu's daughter-in-law years ago. Seeing myself not as a beginner, I initially dismissed the book as perhaps being to easy. After trying some of the recipes I changed my mind--terrific dishes! Every recipe I tried was a keeper. I only wish it was still in print so I could give new copies away as gifts to "beginner" cooks. Mine is terribly worn out but I love it just the same to this day and reach for it regularly on those hectic days. Thanks Lulu!!

Includes: The Entertainer, Easy Winners, Swipsey, Maple Leaf Rag, Elite Syncopations, Weeping Willow, and more of Joplin. Also contains several cake walks, ... delightful pieces not often heard. This book removed the mystery of ragtime for me, an amature pianist, and I discovered to my great amazement, that, with some effort ... I can play it, even the Maple Leaf!

Good, but lacking some later material

I am a 14 year old pianist, and I love Ragtime & stride. This is a good collection. It comprises of many Joplin rags, 2 Eubie Blake rags, some James Scott, etc, and some Early Blues. It is one of the biggest ragtime collections available. I am disappointed, however, that some of the later (ie, 1915-25), more advanced ragtime is absent. It really could have used some 'Kitten on the Keys', or 'Cataract Rag' to "break the ice" on what is otherwise a bit of a dull, repetitive folio. What is there is good, but most is basically just the same.

I would instead turn to Dover for some more interesting ragtime folios

GREAT collection of ragtime and blues

What a wonderful collection! I'm an intermediate-level pianist and relative newcomer to ragtime/blues piano. I was looking for a big sample of all these styles, and this is definitely it. Over 300 pages of stuff, in a sturdy book with a spiral binder (a must-have for big piano books!) I've played this book 'til my hands were sore, and there's still lots I haven't gotten to yet!

Contains some of Joplin's good stuff, but that's widely available. What's really neat about this book is the great selection of other ragtimers' best -- James Scott's Grace and Beauty, Great Scott Rag, Eubie Blake's Chevy Chase Rag, some other great pieces I'd never heard of.

Also, classic old-time blues included, such as W.C. Handy's Memphis Blues and St. Louis Blues, Ballin' The Jack, Tiger Rag, etc.

Also, some wonderful pieces called Cake Walks; kinda like ragtime but slower. Really lovely stuff!

The Library of Ragtime and Early Blues by Amy Appleby and Peter Pickow is Outstanding.

As a New York school music educator, this is the best and most complete musical tribute of this era that I have seen. It deserves 10 stars and will definitely be a fantastic addition to add to your home music library. I highly recommend it for the more advanced piano student since ragtime and blues can often be a bit challenging to play.

The book has a beautiful introduction, table of contents (grouped by composer) and index. I like the fact that the name is printed on the edge of the white plastic binding, making it easy to find on a book shelf. All of the Amsco books in the library series that I own are attractively the same height. Each and every "rag" in this book is not only fun and exciting to play but appears to be easy on the eyes due to the fact that it is printed clearly on heavy, white bond paper.

My favorite ragtime composer is Scott Joplin. To my delight, there are 22 of his original compositions in this book. I began playing my favorite of all ragtime pieces, "The Maple Leaf Rag" the minute I received this book as a gift. It was the best gift ever! I didn't even know that Scott Joplin wrote a "Wall Street Rag." I liked the annotations over the different sections of this piece, such as "brokers feeling melancholy" or "good times have come."

I would be remiss if I didn't mention some of the other 40 composers in this book such as James Scott, W.C. Handy, Joseph Lamb, Scott Hayden, Irving Berlin, Tom Turpin and Eubie Blake, etc. There is also a whole section on Ragtime songs, such as Irving Berlin's "Alexander's Ragtime Band" along with cakewalks, classic rags, blues rags and folk rags. I have hours of enjoyment ahead of me.

It contains a lot of practical information useful for both the novice and experienced martial arts practitioners. This book is a very fun, informative, and easy read. A must for any martial artist.

The martial arts world has been waiting for a book like this! The Martial Arts Info Guide is packed full of extremely useful knowledge. This book covers everything from how to punch and kick correctly, to how to avoid bar fights, along with answers to such puzzling questions such as, "do black belts have to register with the police?" In all my years of reading I have not come across a book as fun to read, while still instilling the basics of martial arts training. I believe that I am a better martial artist because I have read this book. Chris Pellitteri is a wonderful author, and I hope I am fortunate enough to read more of his books in the future.

I'd definitly have to say that I'm a novice in the martial arts world. This book has really given me a lot of useful information that can be applied to everyday situations. It provided me with practical self defense techniques as well as how to punch and kick correctly. It answered a lot of frequently asked martial arts questions, and didn't necessarily focus on any certain style. I particularly liked the list of common martial arts terms, and their meanings. This book is a nice easy read that you can pick up anytime and reference to, or read in your free time. If you're involved in martial arts, or just find an interest in it, this book is a "must have" for your collection. I can't wait for volume 2!

I turned to Judith's book because of her Healing Tao background. I've practiced HT methods for 6+ years & was still feeling an immense energy drain or assault around certain people, places & circumstances. HT focuses mostly on the internal workings & organ energies but falls short I feel on the relationship that takes place in the energy fields between places & people.

Judith's book brings forth a positive & light approach & style that will introduce or remind you of the intricate relationship of energy that goes on all around us at all times. These interactions are not always positive for all parties involved often leaving the open or sensitive one feeling drained, sick or any myriad of other disharmonious feelings. This book helps you to realize & practice setting your boundaries & gaining more choice of what happens to your energy aound others. It's packed with practical excercises to help get you in touch with a deeper dimension of reality. Thank you Judith! I look forward to your next book :)

Judith Poole has produced a remarkable piece of work that enables the reader to understand and work consciously with the multitudes of energy systems that we are so much a part of. Her personal annecdotes reminded me of so many experiences of my own, where I became physically uncomfortable in crowds for apparently no reason. I carry this little jewel every where I go, now. It will be a constant source of referral for you.

Why do you feel exhausted around some people, and energized around others? What is that pain in your back trying to tell you? Why is it as important to cleanse your aura as it is your physical body? Judith Poole addresses Poole has given us an excellent introduction to the "invisible" world around us, and how it affects us--whether or not we are aware of it! Her descriptions are easy enough for the general reader to understand, but not condescending. The advanced energy worker may also find new information here. She also provides easy exercises to help learn mastery of this--to many--unknown realm. This book will be invaluable to students and teachers of energy alike. I recommend it to all of my Shamballa/Reiki students.

I needed a gift for my mom for Mother's Day. I knew she lost her old recipe books in the hurricane, so I decided to buy her a blank cookbook. Since I had copies of the recipe's she lost, I decided this would be a great gift for her. What better way to keep all her recipe's and my grandma's recipes in. This book is really great. It has plenty of pages to fill and different categories. There is also a index and a place for you to write notes. My mom absolutely loved it and was very happy to get all the recipes back that she lost in the storm.

I bought Norma's first book (My Students' FAVORITE Chinese Recipes) on a whim while killing some time at a book store. I didn't think much of it until one day when I felt inspired to make some Chinese food. The book was well organized and her instructions are straight forward. I used that book for many years and it has become worse from wear as I consider it the foundation for most of my Chinese food cooking.

I just purchased the Updated Edition on Amazon.com and am looking forward to thumbing my way through it in the years to come. Keep them coming Norma!

This is one of the most "usable" cookie cookbooks I've seen. I collect cookbooks and have a good basis for comparison. Like all the other Gooseberry Cookbooks, the style of composition makes it a fun book to use. I first bought a copy of this book several years ago and didn't really open it up and look at it. When headed to visit our daughter several states away, I was looking for something I could take to her as a gift and saw "Old Fashioned Country Cookies" on the shelf so grabbed it up and gave it to her. Sitting around her kitchen table, I finally had the time to REALLY look at its pages. I'm flipping pages and thinking..."Good grief, WHY did I give this book away...these recipes look fabulous!!" I asked her for some paper and a pen and started jotting down recipes I thought I wanted to try. That proved to be a finger-cramping adventure. I knew I just HAD to purchase another copy. Couldn't let all those gems get away. I did just that and haven't been sorry. It's wonderful to have so many good recipes in one book. It's the first one I reach for when the urge to make cookies pops into my head. I also love the country-style graphics and the hints sent in by Gooseberry readers. If I were trapped on a desert island and could only have one publishers cookbooks, I'd opt for the ones by Gooseberry Patch...they are GREAT! If you order this book, you won't be sorry. And my daughter LOVED it as a gift too!

Phase 1 Low Carb Diet Cookbook as well as Phase 11 Low Carb Diet Cookbook by Better Homes and Gardens, are geared for every kind of cook.

Simple ingredients to find (not so with other low carb books, i.e. South Beach, as I had to go to three stores before I got all ingredients for one dish)!

Recipes are easy to follow, and simple enough to make for the novice cook.
Items are visually attractive, tasty, not dry, bland and uninviting as some low carb recipes tend to be.

The fats included might be a bit high for those following diets that sharply cut fats along with carbs, though one can adjust them to suit with little effort.

All of the recipes I have made were so tasty, that even some non-low carb dieters requested them when I made them for potluck dinners!!!

This book is an exhaustive look at sight-singing. It almost gives too much information, but all the information is relevant to the subject. I recommed this book to anyone who has a general knowledge of music theory and would like to apply a sight-singing technique to increase their musicianship. Many students have a basic understanding of music theory, but have not created an inner ear or inner rhythm. This book shows you how to develop both.

I have recently used this book and it is fascinating! Dr. Krueger takes sight singing to a new, comfortable, and well paced level. She believes in training the ear before the reading and writing, instead of throwing multiple ideas at the students. I highly recommend this book for college-level or even high school music students. If you ever have the chance to meet or take a class from Dr. K at the University of South Carolina, DO IT!
