As a 34 year old adult woman with epielpsy, I found this book to be a godsend. I was given this book by Dr. Schachter this year. In reading this book, I found that other women share my trials and triumphs with epilepsy. I recommend this book as well as the other "Brainstorms" books. This book should be read by all women with epilespy.

This is a wonderful book. It is a series of different women's narrations of experiences with their epilepsy. The women range in age and interest, as well as to the severety with which their epilepsy has affected their lives. It felt great to put my own difficulties with this illness into context through hearing of other epileptic women.
This is a great book to read if you are an epileptic woman, or the husband/ partner/ boyfriend/ girlfriend friend or relative of one.
So far my father has read it, and I think it has given him a better starting off point with which to talk about my epilepsy with me. (I already have a line of friends and family waiting to read this book.)
The book's author Dr. Krishnamurthy, also heads a comprehensive epilepsy center through Boston's Beth Isreal Hospital. More information about the center is in the book and it is definatly worth investigating.

Excellent book.

As a 50 year old woman recently diagnosed with Complex Partial Seizures, this book has been a godsend. I actually thought I was losing my mind; but reading this has helped me to understand that I am not alone. I will now pass this book on to my children and family to read along with my friends so they will also understand just what I am going through. At last, I can have some peace of mind knowing that others have felt the same as I have..... Great book, very easy to read. All women diagnosed with epilepsy should read this book.

I'm not alone as an adult woman with epilepsy!

This is the first book I've found that shares experiences of adults with epilepsy. It's filled with a variety true stories of adults living with epilepsy. It's very engaging, and makes the reality of epilepsy not so painful and shameful. I found myself on many of the pages and I learned so much.

I wish we had bought this book before our recent dive trip to California. The little fish id cards just don't have as much info and the quality of pictures in this book. As a fan of the Humann id book series, I can say that all of his books are the best on the market and any snorkeler or diver should own them all.

As a freediver along the coast north and south from San Francisco, I frequently refer to this book for reference of the fish I find in the kelp beds. I am able to find every fish I saw in the water in this book. The color photos are great for that purpose. Other books in my collection are sometime visually vague due to the lack of photographic images (paintings and/or black & white sketches). In ths book the text along with the pictures are also informational: distinctive features, description, abundance & distribution, habitat & behavior, reaction to divers.

As an avid diver in the Puget Sound, I have found this book to be very useful. It features great photos to help me identify the fishes that I encounter while underwater. The format is easy to use because it is geared toward the underwater naturalist. I recommend it to all my diver friends.

This is one of the finest atlases of peripheral blood cells I've ever seen. The photomicrographs are clear and definitive and the verbal and visual comparisons to aid in differentiation are excellent. Well organized and easy to find what you are looking for. Because the author used actual photomicrographs rather than drawings, she put this atlas head and shoulders above the competition.

Excellent Peripheral Blood Morphology Reference Book

This is an excellent reference book for those learning to evaluate peripheral blood smears. There are sections for each cell type that focus on morphological characteristics of each maturational stage utilizing written characteristics, photomicrographs and an illustrated line drawing that labels all of the distinguishing features. This is invaluable for the learner. There are also separate sections on comparative morphology, enabling the learner to distinguish cell types that are similar (blasts vs reactive lymphs for example). Examples of many RBC and PLT morphological variants are also noted.

I have used this book extensively for training of Clinical Laboratory Scientists and Pathology Residents, and recommend it highly.

John Novello is an amazing musician. Having a book that gives insite into his approach would be quite valuable all by itself, but he has put together a very comprehensive work that is a must have for any musician looking to expand his/her knowledge and abilities. In this modern age where the electronic keyboard provides the easiest access to the world of instrumentation, as a songwriter/arranger I find John's Contemporary Keyboardist to be an essential reference, especially as my main instrument is the guitar.

john novello's contemporary keyboardist is a complete guide to become an professional modern keyboardist. it features hundreds of easy exercices in many different music areas such as basic rithim, improvisation, advanced harmony etc... plus many interviews with today's most important jazz players such as herbie hancock, chick corea etc... A MUST.

I have had an opportunity to use John's book for many years. I am a film and TV composer with many credits and years of experience. But I could not play or write Jazz. Johns book unlocked the secrets of improvisation and chord voicings in this book. Within two weeks I finally understood Jazz and could play it. Also his detailed layout of extension chords, has been valuable to me as an arranger and composer. For anyone who is serious and passionate about piano, jazz and keyboards this book is vital and valuable. I appreciate the amount of research and time John spent creating such a great tool, especially since he is a very active performer and recording artist.

This book is a true keeper if you are in a hurry. The main thing I noticed in this particular book is a lack of seasoning ingredients. I guess one would do so to his/her own tastes though (hubby, who even SALTS HIS HAM, is more adamant about this opinion than I am...and he still has startlingly low blood pressure...sheesh!)

I like my Meals in Minutes book more, but it is, as always with a cookbook, a matter of personal opinion. Still a solid winner in my house.

Have you EVER had a recipe book from which you've tried almost ALL of the recipes? With this one, well, I have. I think that there's only a handful now that I haven't prepared and the only one that was a real stinkaroo was a spinach dish (hey, imagine that!). I use this almost nightly for something, most of the time I plan the whole meal from this book. The recipes are just wonderful and they're done in no time at all. I'm in the process of getting the meals in minutes book - the second one in this series because they're just great. You won't be disappointed with this one! Just hope I don't wear mine out too soon!

As a chef who has always believed pancakes could be more than a sticky stack of syrup- drenched paste on a plate, it is refreshing to enjoy Crepes, Waffles & Pancakes. Well conceived and filled with lush photographs, the book expands the bounds of the category, giving us delights like the Deep-Pan Pancake, a cross between a pancake and a pizza, shrimp-filled Jambalaya Pancakes, a Prawn and Mango Pancake Basket (using pancake batter to share an edible basket), and over 100 others.

The waffles section moves ambitiously into the realm of ther main course: Spicy Lamb and Chickpea Waffles, Poppy Seed Waffles with Ratatouille, Spicy Tomato Waffles with Pork. Specialties like south Indian Dosas with spicy potato sauce, Blintzes, and the wonderfulclassic Cherry Clafoutis round out this excellent kitchen resource.

I saw a pre-release for this book sometime ago, and quickly put in an advance order for it with Amazon. The thought of a whole book given to pancakes and waffles seemed like a lot of fun to me.

Honestly, when it came and I opened up the box, I was a little disappointed. I was expecting a hardback with good binding. Instead, this was a paperback with a white comb binding. However, my disappointment quickly dissolved as I began looking through the book. The pages are suitably glossy, and most of the recipes are accompanied with a nice photo of the finished product.

Most important, however, was the variety of the recipes. An easy hour with this book and I already knew more about the world of pancakes than I had gained by cooking and flipping them for 30 years. Traditional recipes are provided. But there is also ample coverage of pancakes with non-traditional flours, such as chickpea. The savory recipes almost balance out the sweet ones, providing a lot of opportunities to make these for lunch or at meals when one wants something other than a pile of fluffy sweets.

I really enjoy this book and do not regret pre-ordering it one bit. The variety and instruction provided is truly eye-opening.

My favorite meal of the day is breakfast. And I'll trade eggs and bacon for waffles, pancakes or crepes any day of the week. They are true 'comfort' foods. If you want variety in your breakfast (or even a late-night supper or dessert) Crepes, Waffles & Pancakes fills the bill with over 100 mouth-watering recipes.

For the new cook, as well as the experienced cook, Crepes, Waffles & Pancakes includes sections on ingredients that will make the food better, and the equipment that contributes to the ease of cooking. It's worth reading.

Some of my favorite recipes are: Lemon and sultana buttermilk pancakes; the tasty Deep-Pan pancake; Jambalaya Pancakes; Russian Blinis; Almond Waffles with Cherry Compote' and Coffee Crepes with Caramel Oranges.

Whether you are eating breakfast, having guests for brunch, snacks, dinner or dessert, Crepes, Waffles & Pancakes has something special for you to serve.

Armchair Interviews says: A cookbook to keep and use for all occasions.

Beautiful Music on the Fly

Review Date: 2007-02-21
Easily 5 stars, this book is an unregrettable buy for students and teachers (especially) alike. However, it should be noted that books like this are dangerous because they can catch you in a loop of non-progression. Because the pieces are of the beginning levels and because the volume is so vast one can easily cease to challenge themselves progressively. Do not think of this book as a substitute for learning complex pieces but instead as a recipe book for beautiful music on the fly. Even for the well learned pianist it is invaluable for being able to produce enjoyable music for yourself and others without intense study. Still, I certainly recommend not allowing it to replace Anna's Notebook or the Well Tempered Clavier. Remember, transcriptions to a single instrument will not be as complex as an entire orchestra anyway, so there is no shame in using this volume- just so long as you don't limit yourself to it! That said, I have to also say that the composition has been well thought. Fingering is provided. And perhaps most importantly the library is vast, varied and popular- Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Handel, Joplin, Mozart, Tchaikovsky are only a most popular fraction of this volume and are provided at an unbeatable price. Also, thankfully, the book is plastic comb bound so the pages will stay open at the piano and can be easily laid flat for scanning and are removable.

Great cookbook! Simple recipes using basic equipment and techniques... nothing fancy, just easy "scratch" cooking. (Real cooking like Grandma used to do, seriously.) The book itself is of good quality: front & back covers are strong with plastic spiral-comb binding. The black and white layout is clear, with the recipes easily identifiable, and sprinkled throughout are vintage photos, artwork and articles. The recipes are wonderfully simple, with common ingredients and a very 'homey' appeal. I particularly love that all of the recipes are dated, identifying when they were published in The Farmer's Wife magazine between 1893-1939.

The recipes, the refreshing simplicity, the overall book quality with vintage images and articles, and the old-fashioned/depression-era appeal of the back-to-basics home cooking makes this TOTALLY RECOMMENDED!

I wanted to learn how to cook meals my food-loving family could swallow and that I could attempt to learn without losing my mind. Living in the south, I looked and looked for cookbooks that included blue-ribbon recipes for meats and also make vegatables seem to taste better then they really do. Then, low and behold I found the "The Farmers Wife Cookbook." It is just what Grandma would have used in her day! It is also simple and easy (two words every new cook loves). It shows the new cook why appetizers make a meal more enjoyable and that there is a "perfect dressing for every salad"!

Things every one loves to eat are in this book. The recipes are borken down in easy to follow steps that even I could understand. You'll be making Waldorf Salad on Monday and by Friday why not have some Angel Cream Pie or Delicious Doughnuts?!

Buy this! You will love it! And those you cook for will love you and your cooking!

In the late 19th to the early 20th centuries, "The Farmer's Wife" magazine was a staple in American homes, featuring timely topics of interest to rural women readers. Every issue showcased recipes and menus meant for farm kitchens, from the first issue in 1893 to the last issue in 1939. Now the best of those recipes and menus are reproduced in "The Farmer's Wife Cookbook: Over 400 Blue-Ribbon Recipes". Enhanced with clips of the magazine's original articles and artwork, "The Farmer's Wife Cookbook" also includes a guide to home canning and instructions for making jams, jellies, pickles, and relishes. Spiral bound and sturdy, "The Farmer's Wife Cookbook" has its recipes arranged in chapters dedicated to 'First Courses and Soups'; Beverages; Breads; Meats; Soups; Vegetables; 'Hot Supper Dishes'; Salads and Salad Dressings; Desserts and Candies; Cakes, Cookies, Doughnuts, Icings, Fillings and Dessert Sauces; Pastry and Pies; Jellies, Conserves and Jams; Pickles and Relishes. Offering nostalgic dining on farm family favorites, "The Farmer's Wife Cookbook" is thoroughly 'kitchen friendly' for modern cooks and a useful, entertaining and inspired addition to personal and community library cookbook collections.

Review Date: 2008-06-30
This book is not only comfort food for the stomach, but for the eyes and soul as well.

When I think of life on the farm I instantly picture a scene from a Norman Rockwell's painting. The simple life, grandma with her big apron on, putting up preserves; delicious smells of home-made bread comming from the kitchen's wood cooking stove. I envision a grandma who's cheeks are flushed like rosey apples, and smiling eyes that sparkle as she's humming a tune.

Think country fairs; tables laden with prize winning preserves, pies, and cakes. Children running between the prized quilts, chasing a goose. The smells, sounds and activities at the fair are simple pleasures and anticipated by country folk every autumn after harvest-time.

If you want to experience the next best thing to being on a farm, read this book. You'll want to experience home cooking from scratch. You'll get the urge to immerse yourself up to your elbows in dough, kneading it into loaves of aromatic bread, or buying bushels of fresh fruit and vegetables from the market so you can preserve them for the winter.

Take a trip down to the farm today in this book. I know it will be used over and over again. The mouth-watering recipes will become favorites with your family and friends.

Happy cooking;
Petra
