This is my absolute favourite. Nothing else in my collection (of over 200 titles, including as many of Leitch's works as I can get my hands on) even comes close to this title. I carry quotes from the novel around in my wallet... have them written out and stuck on the walls around my house... is that mad?

There is something about this book... it is, to me, the pinnacle of Leitch's work.

That final line will always stay with me. "...that magic circle that shut out the troubled unease of the world and enclosed the three of us in a dream of fair horses."

I think I first read this book at the age of about 10 - living in Glasgow I was always desperate to escape away from the smog and the people. Discovering Patricia Leitch kept me sane - I would disappear to the park, lie among the trees and lose myself totally in a world of horses, freedom and dreams. 'Dream of Fair Horses' is undoubtedly Leitch's most magical book and has reduced me to tears on several occasions - recently included (and I'm 25 years old) I strongly recommend this book and if Patricia herself is still around - I want her to know how valued she was in my growing years - and still is.

I am an enthusiastic amateur rider, and shared this book with my trainer; we both found the photos fantastic, and the text informative and helpful. A great addition to the library of any rider interested in dressage at the highest levels.

An invaluable handbook of techniques for any serious about dressage.

DRESSAGE MASTERS: TECHNIQUES AND PHILOSOPHIES OF FUR LEGENDARY TRAINERS isn't for the casual horse enthusiast, but for the neo-pro who wishes to learn from the masters. The trainers are Klaus Balkenhol, an Olympic medalist who coached the German team, Ernst Hoyos, who trained two Olympic winners, Dr. Uwe Schulten-Baumer, who also trained two riders and his son, all champions, and George Theodorescu, trainer of many top teams and riders. Interviews with these masters pair with photos of exercises and other teaching and competition techniques to provide an invaluable handbook of techniques for any serious about dressage.

I purchased this book after seeing an interview with the author on Good Morning America last week. I have reason to suspect that my dad may be nearing the end of his driving career. After reading the Driving Dilemma, I feel much better about broaching this very delicate subject with my Dad. Dr. Dugan offers a very practical and conscientious way of evaluating driving skills. The premise of involving an older driver in the evaluation, discussion and decision making process is made easy with this reference guide.

If you're facing this challenge with a loved one, or know of someone who is - then reading this book will make an anxiety ridden process so much easier. I highly recommend this reference guide.

A very powerful look at the growth of an armaments giant.

I have been a fan of Taylor Caldwell since first reading 'Bright Flows the River'. 'Dynasty of Death' is a powerful book which chronicles the rise of the armaments industry from a one room shack into the giant that it is today. If you want to understand the enormous reach of this powerful industry, you cannot miss reading 'Dynasty of Death'.

#1 of a trilogy. If you read any of them you must read all.

This set of three books Dynasty of Death, Eagles Gather and The Final Hour were published in England in the 1940's and not allowed to be published here until the 70's or 80's. I have read almost all of her books and these 3 are my favorites. In my opinion she is one of the best authors of our time.

Mr. Moore, I'm very sorry, but you're mistaken. Patri Collins is no pen name, but rather the name of my favorite civics teacher. Mr. Collins, if you're reading this, hi! I haven't read your book yet, but I plan to. Thanks for everything!

Sincerely,

A student

I'm not sure (I acknowledge I may be totally off the mark here), but I think Patri Collins character, Max Stole, is loosly based on me. I think Patri Collins is the pen name for one of my 2 best friends in highschool, Matt Weiner. And Eden California is Mill Valley, CA. While acknowledging the physical possibility I am in error.... I'm not. Pretty effing cool, Matt. If I'm right, thank you, Matt. You saved my life, and I can never repay you. Wow. I always identified with Zooey Glass, who knew you saw me as Holden Caufield. Way to go. I can't wait for "Tomorrow's War". Ya Bastich! You said you were gonna write me into a book, but I took it as drunk talk. I'll never doubt you again. You da' man. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Please pass it along, as I am forever endebted to everyone who helped shake me to sanity, and realize I do have value. I will try to repay you all as long as I live.

Great Book for Readers of Any Age
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2005-11-07
I'm one of the people who stumbled across the book after watching the the mini-series on PBS way back in the early 80's as a child. Like the other reviewer states, this book works best when read in the order of the trilogy, Flambards, The Edge of the Cloud, Flambards in Summer, and for a finale Flambards Divided. It tells the story of a young girl, Christina, in the years directly leading up to the First World War. Aviation was still in its infancy, and plays a major part in this installment of K.M. Peyton's trilogy as it centers around Christina and her fiance/ cousin William.

The book is really more of a coming of age story than its predessor, Flambards. Flambards pretty much covered the gamut of childhood and the threshold of young adulthood, this story actually has the characters dealing with real world adult issues of being more or less on their own for the first time.

It's a great book, a wonderful series, and I highly recommend this to readers of any age.

"Edge of the Cloud" A Great Read for Youth and Adults.

The book "Edge of the Cloud" is the second novel in the Flambards Trilogy by K.M. Peyton and earned her the Carnegie Medal. Suitable for teens, it is still a fascinating story for adults (it is one of my favorites). This is the story of a young English woman in the years right before, and during the start of, WWI when women's roles were changing and aviation was starting to take off so to speak. Read "Flambards" first and "Flambards in Summer" after "Edge of the Cloud" for the whole story. Years later Peyton wrote "Flambards Divided" as a sequel to the trilogy. In the 1980s Yorkshire Television and PBS aired a series based upon the Flambards trilogy, leading to renewed interest in the books, which were first published in the 1960s. Get comfy -- once you start reading this book you'll not want to put it down!

I remember reading these books (O'Sullivan Twins and St' Clare's stories) when I was about 11-12 years old. Sure, I did live in the UK or go to boarding school but I still enjoyed reading about all the fun, rivalry, midnight feasts, field hockey matches, and the other jolly adventures of the twins and their classmates. If you liked "The Parent Trap" (Hayley Mills version, that is) then you will love reading about the O'Sullivan Twins.

The "Stuck-Up" twins of St.Clares are determined that they will not be snowed by the climate at St.Clares - but are proved wrong. They realise that they are at the finest school in England and soon shape up, after some good talking-to's, a midnight feast, and various hi-jinks. BRILL!!

This was the best book on vitamins and mineral supplments that I have ever read! It is comprehensive, very readable, and has excellent information. I learned a lot from each write-up and it was written in understandable language. Very well organized so you can easily find specific subjects you are looking for. An excellent reference manual for every home!

Exceptional guide to improving health with proper nutrition
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-20
There's now extensive research on the benefits of vitamins and minerals beyond just avoiding diseases caused by nutritional deficiencies. This book is an excellent guide to understanding those benefits and avoiding supplements that either are not beneficial or may even be harmful at excessive levels.

The authors carefully describe the degree to which a claimed benefit for each of 40 some vitamins and minerals is substantiated, as well as risks of toxicity, and dietary sources. There descriptions are based on a balanced assessment of the available research.

The first part of the book is organized by vitamin or mineral, so you can see the collected information on, for example, Vitamin E, in one place. The second part of the book is organized by disease or condition (e.g., cancer, fatigue, etc.) and discusses all the relevant vitamins and minerals, as well as general nutrition issues related to the disease. This second part is very helpful if you're facing a particular problem.

The book includes an extensive set of references, as well as a good glossary and index. Some information has changed in the years since the 2nd edition was published, but it seems generally up-to-date. When the 3rd edition comes out, I'll definitely buy a copy.

Great book for the non-lawyer

Review Date: 2002-01-04
I just finished reading "Every Woman Should Go to Law School or Read This Book," by Margaret Basch, J.D. When I first started flipping through it, I thought it might be boring, dry do-it-yourself legal advice. It wasn't.

While "Every Woman..." teemed with advice on legal research, finding a lawyer, some do-it-yourself tips and getting the government to do your legal work for free, it also carried messages of girl power. Basch encourages women to become powerful in their jobs by reacting "like a man." Men don't worry about hurting someone's feelings if they get promoted; they worry about what tie to wear, she says. Every woman should also know how to negotiate effectively, whether it's for a raise or a new car, and write effective complaint and appreciation letters. If that isn't enough, Basch finally solves the mystery of networking for women. (Hint: it's not in those "networking lunches.")

As a total law layperson, I'm going to recommend the book because it's easy to read, very informative and well worth the $.... It might be too basic for those who actually went to law school, but for me, it inspired me. I've even used some of the tactics to get a refund already!

Excellent, enjoyable book filled information for the independent or not-so-independent woman. Legal matters are not above your head, when you use this little book as a guide. Ms. Basch must actually be one of an endangered species...a smart, sympathetic, humorous lawyer. I read it, enjoyed it, and recommend it.
