Responsible Big Cat Ownership: Review of a Lion Called Christian

[...]

I have an original copy of this book, A Lion Called Christian. It is a hardcover book.

This book recounts the experiences of two men who owned a London boutique, bought a lion cub to try to attract customers to the store, and when the lion outgrew their ability to responsibly maintain him, they took responsibility for his future by taking him to George Adamson in Kenya to be rehabilitated to the wild.

George Adamson was the ex-husband of Joy Adamson, author of the famous Born Free books. They were the pioneers of the practice of successfully rehabilitating captive animals to the wild.

The story is excellent and is attracting new interest today because of videos on youtube, of the reunion of the owners and Christian after Christian was living as a fully rehabilitated wild lion.

This story is the epitome example of people taking full responsibility for the welfare and future of the big cat they bought as a pet, when that cat outgrew their facilities and resources to keep him adequately for his needs.

It is a beautiful moving story and also shows just how much loyalty and love that animals can have toward humans who genuinely care about them and relate to the animals in positive fair ways that the animals understand.

Despite having been originally written in the 1980's this book remains relevant today. The book teaches you to be your own security consutant. The checklists are valuable to anyone who is doing a threat and vulnerability analyis. Whether you are an aid worker with an NGO, a diplomat, an English teacher or running a small business in a developing country it will be useful to you. Even if you work for a multinational and can afford a security consultant it can be valuable so that you can assess whether or not your security staff are doing their jobs correctly. If you are going overseas get this book!

I was an American soldier in West Berlin when I obtained my first copy of Patrick Collins "Living in Troubled Lands." In the turbulant 1980's the joke was that the Polish airline, Lot, had scheduled skyjackings to Templehof Central Airport every week. Anti-draft and anti-American riots were common in West Berlin. The Berlin Wall was a land-mined, electrified barbwire reality. The spy game was in full Cold War swing. Yet most G.I.'s in West Berlin were ignorant of the threat--despite constant G-2 briefings and sensational newspaper stories.

Collins's book is easy to read, well organized, and based on workable personal security procedures. One warning--Collins puts personal security above obeying local laws. Collins says that the major threat to Americans overseas is being complacent and arrogant--and that ordinary crime is the next big threat (I think it is motor vehicle traffic!). Collins talks about assessing your own personal security situation, then addresses specifics: your residence, your office, your automobile, weapons (including firearms), and how to integrate your family into a security plan. How-to information on surviving being kidnapped and held hostage is relavent even 25 years after Collins wrote "Living in Troubled Lands." At the end of the book is a series of security checklists. You won't be able to get a better personal security program without spending several thousand dollars. This book will "teach you to fish" so that you will be able to provide most of your own security. Avoiding terrorist attack is mostly a matter of staying out of the terrorists' crosshairs.

I used "Living in Troubled Lands" as my personal security blueprint through two 3-year tours in Germany as an American soldier, through a 5-year and a 2-year contract as an anti-terrorist security officer in the Middle East, and for my mundane anti-crime personal security program in the United States. Professionally, these principles made me an effective security officer and kept me out of trouble as a soldier in Germany and in the Middle East last year. I keep handing out copies of Collins's book to friends and coworkers because these procedures work.

Individuals must take charge of their own personal security. No matter how much professional security a person has, that person can derail his own program--"his" is appropriate, given the number of men killed or kidnapped because they gave their protectors the slip to keep a date with their girlfriends--who just happened to be part of a criminal gang, terrorist group, or in the employ of a hostile government or rival corporation. If you don't care about your own security, who will?

I don't own this book yet but I've probably checked it out at the library 3 or 4 times. I will buy it soon. I don't think the cover of the book does it justice.

Some of the projects are not so special but I really think the handmade paper ones are exquisite. I have made the string of lights project and was pleased. It would look very beautiful in a backyard for a night time party. Unfortunatly, I don't have the backyard.

I very much want to try making the unusal and truely magical looking projects such as "Icicles" made with plastic tubing, plastic wrap, and hair nets--guess you gotta see the photos to understand. I also want to make "Stars on Sticks", "Teepee Table Light", "Willow Fish Lantern", and especially "Flower Fairy Lantern. It would look so pretty in my daughter's bedroom.

I think that magpie island is a wonderful example of colin thiele's brilliant writing skills. I found myself feeling sad happy excited and worried all in one. The descrptive writing helps you to understand how magpie would have felt. You can see how the magpie's situation is similar to that of some people in the world e.g. people moving into a new street , country , school ect, ect. I think that benny truly wanted to help magpie but his idea went a bit wrong! I feel that magpie island is one of the best books i have ever read and probably will ever read. *****

I recently read this book and am buying it for my daughter as she sets off for college this fall. It is by far a book I will always treasure. It brings such contentment when reading. Such grace, as all Alexandra Stoddard books do. It truly is a book everyone should read. It is very thought provoking and really has some beautiful quotations throughout it.

This is a book about having the courage to choose a life instead of letting whatever comes along make the choice instead. It made me want to take a closer look at what I'm doing to see if I am making real and earnest progress toward what I most want to achieve in life. This book helped me to realize that what I want takes time and gives some helpful suggestions on where to find missing hours. The book talks about how debilitating it can be to live passively. I really enjoyed this quote from the first chapter, "The person who passively sits back, who waits and sees, will never feel too terrific about life because there will never be much electricity, satisfaction, or fulfillment in it. Nothing works out when nothing is going on." So, if you occasionally feel that you could be sitting in a huge vat of peanut butter unable to get what you want, this could be the perfect book for you.

I especially enjoyed Chapter 4, "Parents and Siblings." Alexandra writes, "We don't choose our parents, but once we've become adults we have the choice of how we are going to react to them." As an eldercare author and educator myself, I know all too well that we never parent our parents, and this book (particularly this chapter) offers sound advice on creating healthy adult relationships. Best book on soapmaking
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-29
Before I started making soap, I researched several books on the subject. Many books in the market are helpful. Depending on what type of soap you are seeking to prepare, what is your budget for equipment/supplies and finally how much time you would like to spend in the kitchen, these are all very important things to know before you start the craft of soapmaking. There are many different methods that can help you achieve soapmaking, this is why I recommend that beginners do some type of research before starting this craft. I am a beginner and read most books. I read from the oldest method of soapmaking to the newest. Now, since I love cooking and art, I decided to make cold processing soap (involves using lye, etc.) because I love the art form of making such a beautiful product plus it also allows me to control what I use as my soap base.

This book has far been the best book on making good-quality soap. Why? Because the recipes include base oils, herbs and essential oils that make these soaps outstanding. Now, with this said... it may be costly, again depending on your budget and if you do your homework. I purchased most of my ingredients online and saved money. This is craft that can be taken both ways.. if you want something easy to make, faster to use and economical, then melt & pour may be your niche since MP soap can be used immediately versus CP which requires time to cure (upto 4-6 wks.)

I have made soap using these recipes on this book and they were perfect. The scents are wonderful and are curing as I type. The instructions are easy to understand in this book. My only suggestion would be 1) I find out that the temperature of both the base oils and lye should be 100 rather than the suggested temperature in the book before blending together and 2) I experienced a great challenge when I tried to take the soap out of the mold. I didn't use any type of mold release and had difficulty releasing my soap. So, the next batch I placed a plastic trash bag inside my mold and this worked great but had lots of wrinkles on my dry soap. What I did to avoid these problems is that I purchased a mold that requires no freezer paper, bag or mold release. This mold is sold on ebay for an excellent price. So far, I've made 3 batches and can't wait to use my scented soap.

I hope this review helps soapmakers and that they enjoy the craft just as much as I am.

The concern of using SDS and EDTA on my daughter's skin made me look into making my own soaps. I browsed about a dozen of books and this is the only one I bought. It is a great book. It is concise and informative. It is practical, yet it's not "dry". It was written by someone who wants to TEACH you how to make soaps. It overviews base oils and their properties, botanicals and essential oils. It shows how to make cold-processed soap bars, liquid soap, clear soap, massage melts and bath bombs. Many recipes are listed, but most important it delivers a ground knowledge that you can use to design your own recipes, if you so chose. The chapter about resources shall direct you well, whether you want to buy in Europe, the U.S. or Australia. Lye calculator and all recipes are given in both metric and imperial. The pictures are magnificent. I recommend this book.

This book is a gem! The writing is excellent, the plot is engaging, the characters' dialogue is witty, and the setting is so real you feel as though you're walking right along with Captain Owen as he navigates the various neighborhoods of Cairo hunting down a lead. Best of all, the book is filled with that droll, dry British sense of humor. There are some laugh-out-loud moments as Owen has to negotiate/cajole/lightly threaten a number of haughty civil servants and bureaucrats.

I like this series much more than Michael Pearce's "Dead Man" series (A Dead Man in Istanbul, A Dead Man in Athens, etc). The writing is much better and the plots are more interesting. So if any of you out there weren't impressed by the "Dead Man" series, I highly recommend you give this Mamur Zapt series a try. I'm so glad my local library has this series. It's a real shame that these books aren't more readily available.

In 1910, Gareth Owen serves as the Mamur Zapt in the British colony Egypt. Gareth's job is to resolve crimes with political implications. When the economy was booming, Gareth often looked the other way. The recent economic collapse makes those cases he pursues that much harder as no one wants to cooperate.

When A Ministry of Agriculture civil servant dies at his work desk, Gareth claims potential political problems with this death. He leads the official inquiry even as pressure mounts for him to end the investigation immediately. Normally, Owen would heed the advise of the local establishment including his peers and superiors, but this time he stubbornly follows the money trail of the deceased though his actions places his position in jeopardy.

This historical who-done-it will excite readers on several levels. The story line contains an engaging police procedural, a fabulous look at a rarely seen time and locale (at least in western novels), and a glimpse into the hierarchy of the Empire where the sun never set. Historical, mystery, and political fans will enjoy THE CAMEL OF DESTRUCTION as Michael Pearce provides a triumphant look back into a bygone era through the microscope of a strong investigative tale.

Michael Pearce does it again in this mystery, part of his Mamur Zapt series set in Egypt during British Rule. An additional mystery is why this series isn't readily available at bookstores. I have searched for years and not found them; only Amazon came to the rescue.
The series is a treasure. Intelligent mysteries that are really novels, charmingly written, tongue in cheek dialogue, an engaging hero in an exotic time and place that is generally little known. Descriptions of the hero's contact with the local population outrageously funny. Every discerning reader will enjoy these. Thankfully, he's written a lot.

EVERY entrepreneur and EVERY small business owner should read this book. If you read it "way back when..."--then read it again! If you've never read it, then order it today! Drucker's advice to go out and TALK to customers and non-customers is key, especially in our email-based and Internet communications era. And Drucker's advice to help others by volunteering for nonprofit agencies is critical to your business, as well as to our communities. Bottom line is if we want people to hire us, buy from us, or invest in our companies, they have to know who we are and why they should do business with us - and they have to respect us as members of the world as well as local communities.(The reviewer is author of two books: Personal Publicity Planner: A Guide to Marketing YOU and Top Cops: Profiles of Women in Command.)

I'd always thought Management was about practice and good examples you had been lucky to receive during your career. At a certain point of my career though, evidences proved I was not confortable with that statement anymore. I felt Management had its principles, rules, laws, but I was missing the education to prove it and sustain it among coleagues, peers, and my reports. Drucker's "Management" filled that abysmal gap and gave me back the confidence that my "feelings" were not devoid of fundaments.

This book has no value what so ever for teaching you how to draw. That's not what this book is for, it's actually a interview with the hottest manga artist's ever known! I thought it would be a good idea to buy this book, just so I can get a preview of my favorite manga artists'art works, as well as what they have to say to other inspiring manga-ka's. I truly enjoyed reading this book, and I'm sure fans of golden boy, clamp, silent mobius, etc would love to hear about what their idol manga artist have to say. I loved everything about this book, and I would recommend this book to those who are interested in a behind the scenes look at the world of manga. If you are looking to buy this book for other reasons, then don't bother buying this book, you will be sorely dissapointed.

An Excellent Examination of Manga Artists

Review Date: 2005-11-04
As a fan of the many styles of Manga, this book caught me rather by surprise. Most books in my collection that deal with manga analyze the work itself. However, this book is truly unique in that it explores the process of the actual creation of manga art. The methods used are delved into in a very fascinating way. The interviews with the artists themselves are well composed and the questions asked are far more novice.

The other outstanding aspect of the book is the use of various manga illustrations as well as photos of manga artists at work. These two items really serve to represent the many aspects of manga art.

If you are a fan of manga, then you owe yourselves this book. A definite recomendation.

This is one of the most pragmatic books written about marketing, specifically Industrial Marketing! Mike Collins provides a logical, step-by-step methodology for anyone to implement. This how-to manual lays out virtually everything a person would need to create a marketing system for any organization that functions in a business-to-business environment.

Mike Collins dispels the myth that you need an exhaustive education in marketing or massive database skills...knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing software is all one needs to implement this straightforward protocol. This is a must for a business manager or owners bookshelf.

I am currently putting this book in practice (1998) and have found significant improvements in our marketing efforts as well as profitability of our company. I would call this book the best unknown marketing book around. You don't have to take a class with Collins to put it in practice either.

Collins presents to the small-to-medium size manufacturer a down-to-earth logical approach for solving the problem of finding new customers that possess the best potential for improving the bottom line. He provides many examples of "how-to" and demonstrates that effective industrial marketing can be accomplished in an economical manner with in-house personnel. It's really a matter of applying common sense systematically to good business practices.

His concepts have allowed me to help clients focus on profitable niche markets, provide better sales coverage to existing and new territories, and move closer to attaining competitive advantage.
