This book gave me the technigues, knowledge, and confidence to take my instrument flying to the next level. The book provides practical knowleged and insite on what to expect when you "punch into the clouds." I now use my airplane to its maximum utility, but still have respect for the weather. I no longer cancel flights due to overcast skies. I plan accordingly, avoid the thunderstorms, and confidently shoot instrument approaches. I highly recommend this book for the instrument rated pilot who is a little bit nervous about taking their personal plane into the clouds.

After you pass the instrument check ride, the most daunting task is actually launching into IMC. Before you do, leave the test prep behind, read this book, and begin working towards actual IFR proficiency.

Once again, Dick Collins shares his extensive experience in a well-written, information-filled text that every IFR pilot should read and heed.

This is bar none THE BEST aviation book I've ever read. It is not a text book. There are no end of chapter quizes or multiple choice questions. It is a very intresting book to read, keeps you wanting to turn the page. Lots of highly useful, PRACTICAL information in this book about flying in ACTUAL IMC. I reccomend that anyone who is intrested in IFR flying read this book. It may even save your life. I've been instrument rated since 2001 and I read this book cover to cover about once a year just to refresh myself. Each time I read it again, I gain something out of it. Read the book.. Fly a few actual IMC flights... Read the book again.. I feel like I can almost hear Dick's voice in my head when I fly in IMC.

This book is not like all the other kind of "band books" that you may have come accross in the past. This book has a different prospective of the photographer and his passion on a band he believed in.

Orlic, takes you on a journey in his own words, of what he was feeling and how he himself, had an inticate part of the band itself. Without him and the brothership that was bonded between he and the members, where would the band be now? Orlic, was the very ingredient that was needed for a lift off of new people discovering the band. He had introduced many of his contacts to The Frames, where they ended recording in Chicago and even one of the engineers, joined the band.
Orlic even had the privledge of becoming a T.M.(tour manager)for one seasons when traveling through America.

This book brings you through the eyes of a photographer. You become like a best friend. Your in like flynn. Your feel like you are a part of the band!

So, I highly recommend buying this refreshing new prospective of a book about a band, that is on it's way to becoming huge! Now that the movie, Once is out, watch out for The Frames! Whom I believe is to become larger than the Dave Matthews Band!

My mouth is still open...

I have had a chance to experience the artist's photography before but was amazed the night I picked up his book (at a live signing) (in Chicago) (I know, lucky me). The entire book is a work of art. The photographer truly captures the fleeting moments of life with The Frames, and you can actually feel the excitement of their lives through the lens of an amazing photographer. For any Frames fan, this is a must -- and for anyone out there who appreciates art -- this is most definitely a must. Is there going to be a part 2??

Sensibility of Rock and Roll. Every frame is to be framed. I love every single photo. Text is passionate as the photos are and if you do not know the music of The Frames, than all of it will become one, ONCE you listen to it. Bravo Zoran Orlic. A true artist.

The superb quality of the book is that the number of examples presented for an advanced grammatical structure is a function of the structure's importance. Unlike other books, if the structure is very important Mr. Astington may furnish as many as 10 examples. This tells the reader that he or she must be comfortable with this structure if they are to speak French on an advanced level. It is a tragedy that this book is out-of-print. I owe a large debt to Mr. Astington.

It's best used after you have a rudimentary knowledge of the grammar, but I bought it shortly after moving to France and just kept reading it over and over, each time picking up more. Too bad it's out of print

I understand that this book was written with glass painters in mind, but I have found it to be a wonderful resource for several crafts. The drawings are clear, concise, and scan beautifully for enlargement or reduction. The technique instructions were brief, but surprisingly complete. The designs run the gammut from simple to ornate, humerous to mythical, and everything in between. If I only had one design book to suggest to a beginning crafter this would be it.

When we were approached to put together the Glass Painter's Motif Library it gave us a great opportunity to answer one of our most asked questions - "What shall I paint?" Well you now need to look no further. This book really has something for everyone - something simple to something much harder. It really is very easy to find a design again too as the index to the book is very comprehensive and enables you to find a design quickly. This book is suitable for anyone that needs a design - whether it be a woodworker or a cross stitcher and of course a glass painter or two may also find it very useful - ENJOY. Good Lovin' Ain't Easy is a very powerful novel about an African American
family. Ms. Sykes does a masterful job with the characters in her novel. She vividly brings them to life.

Good Lovin' Ain't Easy shows love conquers all in dealing with such issues as jealousy, trickery and rage. In spite of many obstacles family relationships make for a strong bond. This novel is about family.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this novel by Barbara Wright-Sykes. After I read it though, I was amazed! This book is so much fun...her characters are delicious to read, there's a lot of snappy dialogue and there were moments where I was at the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened next. Basically the book is split into two pieces, the first part being about JD and Myrna Calhoun, who come to California for the job market. JD is a sweet guy but kind of irresponsible, which is pretty stressful for his wife, Myrna, who is struggling to make ends meet. Their marriage undergoes some serious problems, but you can tell that the two of them really love each other (especially when you read some of the racy lovemaking scenes....very hot). The second half of the book focuses on their daughter, Veda Marie Calhoun, who falls in love with handsome Charles Caziere. Veda Marie is smart and sophisticated, she's a model and one of my favorite parts of the book is her interaction with her best friend Renee Thompson, a sexy (if a little spoiled) city girl. The two of them have fine boyfriends and it's really interesting to see how their relationships turn out. When Charles' ex-girlfriend Monica Webber comes into town, Veda has to go through a lot to keep her and Charles together. I don't want to give too much away, but there are some really good action scenes that keep the plot going.

Overall, it was an excellent read and I can't wait for Joy and Pain, the sequel!

But it Can Still Be Good!

Author Barbara Wright Sykes penned a story that began in the late 50s, early 60s and shares the lives of JD and Myrna Calhoun, their daughter, Veda, and Myrna's family. This book about relationships, love, foolish mistakes and what proved to be the cohesion to keep this family together was truly a wonderful story.

Moving from Shreveport, Louisiana to California to pursue their dreams, JD and Myrna knew they were on their way. Along the road, JD could overcome his gambling habit or stay away from his best friend and gambling buddy, Maxie. But the timing was right after they were able to get on their feet and set up their businesses in order to live out the dreams they were in pursuit of since their move to California.

Growing up in a wealthy home did not have the affect on Veda that it did on most children who grew up privileged. She not only worked in her parents' businesses, but she had chores at home, love from both parents and the guidance she needed to be a well-rounded person to compliment her beauty and her growing modeling career. But would she find the love with Charles that her parents experienced? Would his crazy ex-girlfriend destroy what they had built on their way to a promising future together?

I really enjoyed "Good Lovin' Ain't Easy" but was a little disappointed with the abrupt ending although there is an impending sequel. The storyline was one that caused me to want to read more about the characters and where their lives would take them. I recommend this book to those who love reading about the 50s and 60s eras.

Science author Seymour Simon gives us a great education on Gorillas in his book titled Gorillas. We learn neat facts about these creatures. They can weight only weight about 5 pounds we they are born up grow to weight more than 400 pounds! The book includes lots of full color photos of Gorillas. It also tells us there are 3 group of gorillas. We learn about all three groups in the book and get to see pictures of them as well.

The content of the book is written in a simplistic manner, but is loaded with facts and statistics about gorillas.

Children who would like learn more about gorillas will enjoy this book. We recommed it to animal loves ages 4-9.

The photographs in this book alone are worth the price of the book. This is a great starter book for children. The text is quite simply written yet is loaded with facts and leaves plenty of room open for discussion. The book is quite well researched. This is a good one to read one on one with your child or it is good to read to the entire class. The kids all seem to like it quite well, which, in the end, is really what matters. Highly recommend this one.

In "Gorillas," a rich assortment of full-color photographs is complemented by the interesting, straightforward text of Seymour Simon. The result is fine book for young readers who are interested in gorillas.

Simon describes the different subspecies of gorilla: the western lowland, eastern lowland, and mountain gorilla. He also discusses gorilla anatomy and social life. Particularly interesting is the material about gorilla babies and their development. Simon makes it clear that gorillas are, in general, peaceful beings who have sometimes been inaccurately portrayed by the entertainment industry. Towards the end of the book, Simon discusses some threats to wild gorillas and pays tribute to the work of pioneering gorilla researchers George Schaller and Dian Fossey.

Of course, very young readers will be happy to simply look at the stunning photographs in the book. The cameras capture the varied range of gorilla facial expression and body language. Especially moving are the pictures of young gorillas and gorilla family groups. Looking into the faces of these beings, you can really see the genetic kinship they share with humans (Simon notes that our two species share 98% of our DNA)."Gorillas" is another fine achievement for Seymour Simon.

I ordered this book along w Great Big School House and Cars and Trucks and Things with Wheels (something like that). My invoice charged me for all three books but the Cars and Trucks book was not included in the package. I didn't know how to talk to anybody about the problem so my husband just asked for that book to be considered returned since we never recieved it but I have not noticed a correction. I actually would really like to have that Richard Scarry book since that was our son's favorite in his early childhood. Please let me know how this situation can be resolved. Richard Scarry books should never be out of publication.

GROW YOUR MONEY BY JONATHAN D POND MAKES GOOD SENSE AND MORE DOLLARS

At last, there is a book for the nonfinancially astute that discusses money matters in such a clear, understandable way that it motivates people to apply some of the 101 tips to their own situations and look forward to a richer future. In GROW YOUR MONEY 101 EASY TIPS TO PLAN, SAVE, and INVEST, Jonathan D. Pond covers every aspect of handling income from first allowances to honoring heirs in estate planning. The book is a fluent reading of investment topics sprinkled with humor and illustrated with basic arithmetic. Points are well formulated, inarguable, and easy to implement. They give hope to everyone, no matter what stage in life nor how many resources to squeeze for more value. Besides the book itself, the author maintains a website for readers to get most up-to-date information for individual needs.

Everyone has to think about how they will manage money, but it is difficult to find uncomplicated material for advice. And, as the author points out, financial experts give confusing explanations that can be biased in a way that will "grow more money" for themselves from fees, sales, and/or commissions. Best objective advice is in this book. I was particularly impressed with advantageous tax savings I can take and would not have known about. I also was relieved to learn how to make affordable sound investments with a limited budget and without the risk or difficulty I previously imagined.

This is a book that will benefit everyone. It is a "must have" for every household, basic for a secure financial future.

This is a wonderful educational book on numerous areas of personal finance. It includes topics such as:

Buying and Maintaining a Home
Profiting from a Fabulous Career
Reducing Taxes
Investing in Stocks, Bonds and Real Estate
Retirement Planning
Estate Planning and Insurance
Educating Children about Money and Personal Finance

This is the most comprehensive finance book I've read and it's easy to read with some humor thrown in here and there. The author uses numerous detailed examples to illustrate his points which really help the reader understand the ideas. The book also has a companion website where the reader can go for more information or more up-to-date information as this book ages.

This is not a book that has to be read cover-to-cover. I did that, but if you want to find topics relevant to you, the author includes an age-based checklist in the front. I also really like that the end of the book includes a checklist by month of the things you should be doing throughout the year. It makes keeping up with your finances look less daunting!

The author made it easy for me to come away from the book with my own "To-Do" list, so I definitely got something out of reading this book! I also gained some new perspectives on certain areas - for example, it's a good idea to plan for early retirement because some people plan to retire later, but end up having to retire early. (You don't want to run out of money) I think the author has good insight and great ideas and I agree with his financial strategies.

Great book for all to read!

A welcome book that fills a void in guitar history
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-27
I have been playing guitar for nearly 50 years. Back when I bought my first electric, there were very few choices of "quality" electrics. Gibson and Fender dominated the field, and Epiphone, Guild, and Rickenbacker were smaller players in the field. Since then, the guitar market has exploded with innumerable choices of truly fine guitars. Who plays what (and who played what) has become muddied in my mind. What was George Harrison playing in 1960? What did Keith Richards play in those first few albums? What is out there now that has the sound I like? Finding answers to these questions has been difficult, even with Wikipedia and Google to help me. I read 5 books on the Beatles and found out everything I really didn't want to know (their personal experiences but not their music making).

This book includes a lot of information that I already knew, but finding that information was not easy nor was the information authoritative, much of it coming from people's posts on forums. This beautiful and very reasonably-priced book is all about the fine guitars of the last half century and the people who played them. It is the book that musicians want, and probably would appeal less to non-musician rock fans. Why all of the attention to the instruments? Unlike pianos, flutes, and trumpets, different electric guitars sound very, very different. I can think of no other musical instrument that takes on so many different shapes, sizes, looks, forms, sounds, weights, and sounds. And those guitars can be tweaked to sound a bit different (as John Lennon did to his Epiphone Casino, sanding off the finish and applying only a protective layer of lacquer).

This is the ultimate coffee table book for me. While not as large or thick as some guitar "encyclopedias", I can pick this book up and read through the descriptions and histories again and again, and they evoke fond memories of music that has surrounded me for 5 decades. One omission that surprised me was the lack of mention of Mosrite, the guitar of the Ventures after they switched from Fender. But those guitars are barely in production now and are more likely to be collector's items, so I guess I can forgive the author on this one.

What a wonderful book!

I happened across this book quite by accident but, as a budding guitarist, purchased a copy because I thought it might help me better understand the wide variety of electric guitars out there and their unique sounds. Not only did it fulfill this objective but it also provided me with hours of enjoyment. This was a real page turner. One after another, the reader gets beautiful photography and an excellent description of the best guitars we've all heard as far back as the 50's. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in guitars. Thank you, Neville. I've read a lot of books about guitars and I regard this to be one of the best. Thoroughly enjoyable!

The photography of the instruments in this book is phenomenal and better still, a lot of great Rock 'n Roll moments have been captured. The information is good-I wanted to know the differences between an ES-335, 345 and 355; it's in there, like Prego. I was impressed that the guitar that Chris Spedding played on the Dutch Robert Gordon DVD [Duesenberg] was mentioned and described. Oh, and the best thing of all; how much is this book? $75? $50? $30? Amazon.com sold it to me for less than $20[!] I have bought four of these books and given three out to friends.

I think this is the best single-volume, bilingual dictionary available for French and English. However, one word of warning, if you already own the sixth edition of this work, do not think you're getting much in purchasing the seventh. Every section has an identical number of pages. Really, the only updates you're getting (other than corrections) are a few words inserted here and there--not enough to change the total page count of any particular section. For instance, I found the new terms "weblog" and "webmail" (although "blog" was not included) in comparing one page between the sixth and seventh editions. So if you already own the sixth edition, realize that you will get very little more in upgrading to the seventh. For this reason, I'm thinking of returning it. One nice change, however, is that the seventh edition does not have the fairly useless thumb index and has a plain edge.

That being said, in comparison with the Larousse and Harrap's single-volume, bilingual dictionaries, I definitely think this one is the richest in terms of defining real usage. I keep Larousse as a backup and have dispensed with my Harrap's all together.

Not the Last French Dictionnary You'll Ever Buy

Although I cannot begrudge this fine dictionary that fifth star, it doesn't come close to reaching the bar set by the word "unabridged" when applied to English dictionaries. As others have noted, this is ideal as a dictionary of first resort. That said, for a dictionary whose cover boasts "Thousands of...Technical...Terms," I still find myself returning to my HARRAP'S NEW COLLEGIATE for such things as botanical names, culinary terms, and the like. What's more, the tiny LAROUSSE DE POCHE is still a much better authority on the French/English cognates. Still, the ROBERT will almost supplant those half-dozen books of French slang you have beaten to death, and it is unparalleled in its organization. You can't beat the price, and if you spend any time reading in French or listening to French, it is easily the best bargain out there. Just don't throw away your other dictionaries.

Excellent work

While it is certainly impossible for a dictionary to be completely up-to-date and 100% comprehensive, this dictionary is very close. It is a great primary dictionary and can almost stand alone without a backup dictionary. No translator should be without it. And the price is phenomenal for the value.
