This book is a keeper. The photographs are crisp clear and outstanding. I liked the historical research and the old photographs accompanying the beautiful color photo of the same horse mask. It is a book well worth looking into....Ken

A testament to the value placed upon the horse.

A astoundingly beautiful array of beaded horse masks, utilized by various Native American tribes. The masks are as intricate in detail, as the garments worn by the tribesmen themselves. Most books on Native American artifacts fail to even mention the existance of horse masks. This book is a valuable addition to information on the material culture of the Native Americans.

unconventional QFT book

Review Date: 2000-04-13
Many physicists say that Coleman is one of the great field theoriest in time. This is the collection of what he had lectured. Each chapter has own its importance. The advantage of the book is that he avoided the mathematical complication to explain the real physics. It is very unique feature in the QFT books. So you can get the concept of field theory without mathematical jargon which most students hate.

A wonderful book to supplement one's QFT knowledge

This 400-page book contains eight lectures of varying length (some are quite long). The first two are not very useful, but the remainder of the book is wonderful. It covers topics like scale invariance, Callan-Symanzik (RG) equations, renormalization theory (Hepp's theorem), spontaneously broken symmetries, classical and quantum solitons, instantons (in QM and in gauge theories), and 1/N expansion. These are all useful topics and must be understood by those in the field, and yet not all of them are covered by ordinary quantum field theory books like Peskin & Schroeder. The style is very friendly and readable and includes a lot of endnotes, appendices, and references. This book does not "read" like Peskin/Schroeder or Weinberg or Itzykson/Zuber; those books don't read. This one does. The equations are easy to follow and this book showcases the strength of Coleman's pedagogical style. In fact I can vouch that the tone and content of these lectures serves as a close substitue for Coleman's lectures themselves. The topics were all basically developed in the 1970s, and were themselves all quite hot research areas before supersymmetry and string theory revolutionized high-energy physics. However, the majority of this book is not an anachronism -- the renormalization group, spontaneously broken symmetries, solitons, instantons, and 1/N expansion all pervade modern physics.

A Classic

Coleman is one of the best field theorists and a great lecturer. His style in both research and lectures can be summarized as "turning obvious into trivial". Every topic is presented in the simplest possible way without loss of deep insights, which makes the book extremely comprehensible. The chapter on instantons is absolutely classic.

This book is a must read. Mark Coleman reminds us of the importance of getting off our computers and into the wild, a place many of us are no longer familiar with. This book helps bring you back and many of the meditations are great for beginners. When you're feeling unbalanced, disconnected, and simply overwhelmed by the world, take this book to the ocean, into the woods, or your favorite park and find yourself again.

Mark Coleman's book "Awake in the Wild" provides a delightful and accessible means to explore meditation in the nature world. The exercises and stories provide simple and profound ways for the reader to experience a greater sense of attention and connection to the web of life, and an awareness of the divine. "Awake in the Wild" has become a faithful companion for me on hikes -- there is always something new to discover. I highly recommend this book for both aspiring and cultured meditators! Enjoy.

This is a wonderfully rich and enjoyable biography on a very important woman in history. Not only does the author make Bessie's amazing story come to life, but it is written in an enjoyable stye that helps you absorb the facts and significants of her life & times. I'd highly recomend this to anyone intersted in flight, black history, or women's rights.

An excellent short biography.

This book is intended for children, but can be profitably read by adults as well. I read this at the same time as Doris L. Rich's Queen Bessie, probably the best full-length biography. I was impressed at how well this book conveyed Bessie Coleman's life and character, although the reader may also want to read Rich's book for additional personal, historical and contextual information.

The book is lavishly illustrated with black and white photographs. The Rich book is also well-illustrated, and since there is not a great overlap, the reader in search of visuals should probably consult both.

The book is well annotated and indexed. There is a very short biography and a few relevant websites.

A remarkable woman

Bessie Coleman was a truly remarkable woman. During the 1920s, not many women or black Americans were drawn to flying. Bessy, a black American woman, had to fight many prejudices to realize her dream. Plantz tells Bessie's story from birth to her tragic and suspicious death in a plane crash as a compelling narative. Bessie tackled many challenges in her short life and can be considered a role model, if not hero, for black Americans and all women. This is a good read for 10-year-olds to adult.

If you've read the standard biography of Dorothea Lange by Milton Meltzer (ISBN 0815606222) you'll enjoy this handsome photobook. Originally published in France it beautifully reproduces two hundred and sixty photos (in 250dpi) of her work owned by the Oakland Museum of California.

Dorothea Lange has now, rightly of course, achieved iconic artist status and a steady stream of photobooks continue to appear. Her work is studied by cultural commentators looking for new interpretations of photos that were originally just a straightforward record of how many Americans lived in the Depression and early war years. Though not touched on in this book she provided incidents that will keep the photo world talking: her retouching of Florence Thompson's thumb holding the tent flap in 'Migrant Mother' (Stryker totally disapproved) or the dropping of a black object to attract the attention of a little girl in one of a the series of photos about a homeless family on the road in Oklahoma during June 1938.

The six essays in the book give an overview of her life including a very good one about 'An American Exodus', the 1939 photobook she compiled with husband, Paul Taylor (still available as a paperback reprint). The photos are spread between the essays and if I have a criticism it is that they are not divided into visual chapters. The sixty-eight FSA ones run on from others taken in the thirties. The eight from the Manzanar assignment run into the fifteen from the San Francisco Second Gold Rush series. Assignments dealing with the American Country Women, Irish Country People and The Public Defender likewise run together. The thirteen from the Defender series I thought particularly interesting and I'm not aware of this many being published before. Originally a 1955 commission from Life magazine that eventually took nearly two years but was not used by the weekly.

I think 'Dorothea Lange' is a stunning looking book of photos that can hardly be improved on.

This book is very powerful on several levels. There is the obvious struggle of the people in the photos to survive the harshness of the Depression. Instances of profound despair, strength and resolve are masterfully captured. There is also the technical brilliance of Lange's photos - from composition, depth of field and contrast of shades. Most of all this book made me feel excited about the long reach and permanency of great photos; it inspired me to think about what I can accomplish the same with my photos. One of my favorite photo books!

At Last, the Definitive Work on Dorothea Lange

Review Date: 2005-03-09
DOROTHEA LANGE: THE HEART AND MIND OF A PHOTOGRAPHER for the first time documents more completely the life and creative output of one of the most influential photographers of the 20th Century. Including photographs of Lange in her childhood and then progressing through the formal studio fashion photos that started her career to the stunning documentation of the dust bowl migrant workers of the 1930s to the final images in the 1960s, this compendium includes essays and comments by AD Coleman, Ralph Gibson, and Sam Stourdze that enhance the viewers' experience.

Dorothea Lange was as much a sociologist and commentator on the human condition as she was a consummate photographer. She moved through the world of disenfranchised peoples with a tenderness and vision that was never cloying: honesty as captured in her famous photographs was also from her view of the people she sought to memorialize. Her contribution to the knowledge of the plight of the poor is unfathomable.

Yet given all of this, the power of page after page of her works form the massive archives of the Oakland Museum, including many works never before published in book form, makes a statement no words can match. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, March 05

If you were, like me, introduced to the works of Rumi, through Coleman Barks, your desire/or otherwise in relation to purchasing of this book should be based on your previous reaction to those translations.

This book is poetry but perhaps not in the formulaic sense that is usually bound to that term, it's many reflections provide provocatively simple insights into the human condition from a visionary father of a visionary. Perhaps not one for the best seller list but one to be included in your personal libary if you enjoy spiritual literature.

An excellent, practical guide

I think this book is terrific. Anyone writing a book about computer software should be required to study this book first. It gets to the heart of what you need to know and doesn't hesitate to tell you what you might not want to use (like the grammar checker and the indexing feature). Best of all are the really useful sidebars. For example, as the author admits, it is really easy to get a word count--the hard part is what to do if the document is too long, and her sidebar on the subject is really helpful. Examples of other excellent sidebars are "Seven Rules for Creating Great Lists" that accompanies the section on Numbered and Bulleted Lists and "Dealing With Criticism" (both how to accept it and how to offer it) that goes with the section on Tracking Changes. If you're looking for a really useful guide to Word's most important features, this is the book to get.
