The fourth I.D. book...

Review Date: 2001-05-17
Twenty-five years ago, Josh's father was unjustly blamed for starting a fire in Abbey School's technology block. Convinced of his innocence, Josh, Tamsyn and Rob begin looking for evidence to clear Mr Allen's name. An internet search leads them to ex-pupils around the world, but somehow someone always seems to be a few steps ahead of them. Just as Josh and the others start finding the proof they need, Josh is accused of destroying one of the school's computers. It is up to Tamsyn and Rob and their contacts around the world to discover who is making history repeat itself and why.

"Cyber Feud" is the fourth title in the eight book internet detective series. Like the others in the series, it is fast-paced and both entertaining and interesting. Although this wasn't one of my favourite I.D. books, it is still fully deserves four stars and is brilliant for encouraging children to use the internet. I would recommend it to eight to twelve year olds.

If you enjoyed this, I would suggest reading the other Internet Detective books, especially #2 Escape Key, and #7 Virus Attack, which I think to be the best of the ID books.

What I expected!

I finally got to read this book and it was just what i expected. It was great as of all of the Internet Detective books are. I even checked out the Web site after I saw it on the back of the book. The Web site is great. Cyber Feud was about Josh's father being blamed for a crime he didn't commit. Josh, Tamsyn, and Rob set out to clear Mr. Allan's name. But someone is always a step ahead of them. Then Josh is also accused of wrecking the computer class. I was very surprised when I found out that Ben Quinnlan and Paul Barrett ( Councilman Barrett ) started the fire.Now I'm waiting for " System Crash to come out.Keep up the good work, Michael! Your #1 fan, Deryck K.

Wholly Mythology

I had seen this on Amazon then lucked-up on at at Barnes and Nobles for $20. As stated it's huge. All entries are in alphabetical order which is good and bad--good if you know what you're looking for, bad if you don't because there is no index. However, the fun of trawling through the entries makes the inconvenience fade away. I've found things I knew nothing about, such as an Irish myth of the 'brown bull', and a Native American story of two brothers 'Broken War Club and Smoking Mountain'. Whether you're studying mythology or merely curious this book give you a ton of information and lead to to further inquiry. I highly recommend it.

Amazing!!

This is the most amazing book I've found on mythology! I'm not an expert, just a college kid, but this thing is like three inches thick and has EVERYTHING in it! I found it in the Barnes and Noble Bargain Section for only twenty bucks and knew I had to get it because I'm so completely into this stuff. Definitely five stars!

If you know your way around the hardware store, then this is the book for you

All repairs in this book are not step by step. It has so many repairs that some of them are very brief. I tried to hang a pre-hung door and replace broken window glass. I had to reference to other books to complete the job. I also needed to install some pex ( cross linked polyurethane) piping and this book does not cover how to install it but does mention it on the different types of plumbing page. This book has lots of pretty pictures (colored high def) and comes in a thick hard cover. It even has a recommended supplier and contractor appendix. I recommend you buy this book with another book if you completely have no idea how to use a saw and hammer.

Good book. Here are some other good ones.

This is a very good book. However, no one book can cover all the intricacies of home improvement and construction. So it's best to try to look at the book you're thinking of buying before you purchase it. Try a bookstore or library if possible.
I have purchased the following books and found them to be very helpful to me:
Do It Yourself Home Improvement: Step by Step Guide to Home Improvement;
Ultimate Guide to Home Repair & Improvement (Ultimate Guide);
New Complete Guide to Home Repair & Improvement (Better Homes & Gardens);
Encyclopedia of Home Maintenance & Repair - This is a black & white book, but has very good explanations, especially of electrical.
Popular Mechanics When Duct Tape Just Isn't Enough: Quick Fixes for Everyday Disasters (Popular Mechanics) - This is kind of a "Hints from Heloise" for the home fix'r up'r.

A good start for newbies

This is a great book for newbies just learning to crochet. Each tartan requires just two stitches, trebles and chains which are then weaved together.
This book is 120 pages long and contains 140 tartan family patterns listed in alphabetical order. There is a coloured photo or grid chart for each tartan pattern.
These afghans are so easy, even a newbie to crochet could create their own combination of colours or design a pattern from their traditional family tartan.

This is an excellent craft book, suitable for children and adults, novices and persons with much experience. If you think that crochet can't be a good medium for producing tartans, this book will change your mind.

The book consists of 140 charts for tartan patterns, meticulous general instructions on following the charts, and useful information on kind and amount of materials, tensioning, sizing, and finishing. It includes easy to read colour charting and a substantial number of very good quality photographs showing finished work.

The skills you need to bring to using this book are chaining and treble crochet - that's it! The weaving method (oh, no! I hear you groan. Don't worry, this is very simple and requires no great dexterity or arcane textile knowlege) that the authors describe produces the twill look that is the hallmark of good woven tartan fabric.

Novices will want to start with one of the tartans as given in the book. People with a bit more experience will find it easy to resize projects, use different materials, and, using the book's charting methods, pull patterns from tartans found elsewhere. 140 patterns, including clan, family, district, and some occupational tartans, is a vast resource to begin with, but it doesn't begin to cover all the variants. The book shows modern tartan colours, so ancient and muted tartans will require some adjustment.

The general instructions given in the front of the book are a little complicated because of the weaving technique, and require careful study. Children under about 13 will require help at first. There are six steps to follow (the foundation row through finishing techniques) which half an hour's study, and comparison with photos, should make clear. You'll feel the instructions click into place and be able to explain then to someone else in three minutes. At that point you'll have the theory necessary to attack any project in the book. The size of the projects makes them unsuitable to do while traveling, although they are easily transportable to work in another location.

I'm medium poor at crochet, and just terrible with complicated patterns or stitches, but this book requires neither - it's all straight line work. With the two caveats mentioned above, I unhesitatingly recommend this book. Crochet on!!

It's a perfect book for anyone who wants to know more about soil ecology. It gives introductory basics on some soil chemistry and pedogenesis, but then dives fully into the different ecological processes (and a large section on the critters) at work. I'm using this book in a class I am taking and I would definitely recommend it. Its language is simple enough to express some of the more difficult concepts, but it is complex enough to keep you from being bored. Plenty of graphs, pictures, and studies to accompany readings.

A great reference for ecologists and soil scientists.

I just received a copy, and haven't had time to look through it completely, but I would highly recommend this book for any ecologists (particularly graduate students like myself) who are working with organisms that have any biological connection to the soil. Just looking at the number of pages, it's been updated and expanded quite a bit since the first edition. Chapter 4, on soil organisms, is big and relatively descriptive (with useful pictures). Also covers in significant detail microbial communities (Ch. 3), nutrient cycling (Ch. 5), soil food webs (Ch. 6), the relationship between biodiversity and soil (Ch. 7) and includes quite a few sampling methodologies. This book covers, but does not stress the plant-soil relationship (Ch. 2, only a little over 20 pages), which is nice since that information has been of greater historical focus and is covered well elsewhere, while this book's strength is on things that are not as well covered in the standard literature. Other books that cover similar material as this one would be Dindal's (1990) "Soil Biology Guide" (a classic, animal taxonomy-centered tome in this field) and Wood's (1989) smaller, more ecology-centered text "Soil Biology" (too much like this one to justify purchasing it now?). Coleman et al.'s emphasis on ecology makes this book stand out as a great reference.

Chock Full of Information, but Still Lacking Details.
Helpful Votes: 38 out of 41 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-30
Though this book proved to be helpful when we first bought our new crean point, what struck me is that it doesn't discuss most of the details of cat owning nor does it really give detailed descriptions of illness. We had never had a cat before. How would we know if the darned thing is sick when we bring it home? This book was supposed to help with that, but it only skims illnesses in kittens and cats and spends most of the time discussing showing your new Himalayan. Anyone reading this would be reading it for help on training, diet suggestions and just basic "Cats for Dummies" sort of stuff. While it does offer excellent photos of rare cats and features extra glossy pages making it fun to flip through, it needs more of a point. So Himalayans throw up when they eat grass, any cat will. tell me something I wouldn't know that is unique to long haired or Himalayan cats and kittens, like the watery eyes and constant infections. How to deal with fleas and ticks and how to tell worms would have been nice if they were just doing a a generalized book, but in most aspects you know nothing more on completing this than you did before. It will probably confuse you and make you wonder "Why did they even bother?"

Ten Magnificant Homes Beautifully Illustrated
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-12
This is a beautifully illustrated book depicting ten magnificant houses from the Arts & Crafts period in Great Britain. These homes dating from the late 1800's and early 1900's reflect a time that seems quintessentially England. You almost expect to find Sherlock Holmes or perhaps Lord Peter Wimsey to come around the corner.

The homes are architectually impressive, but this book is mainly on the interior style and decorations. In many cases, such as Red House, the architect designed everything about the house from the structure itself down to the dining room table and the candlesticks and glasses to put on it.

Needless to say, these houses were not built for the common ordinary people, but were the country homes of the very well to do. Most of them were not royalty but successful businessmen. Just to think of cleaning them now seems like a great deal of effort.

As an added benefit, all of these homes are open to the public, and information is given as to how to visit.

Not for the home designer

The "Historic" part of the title must be taken seriously. All of the houses are very big and open to the public. This is not a book for anyone wanting to duplicate Arts & Crafts style. There are much better books for that purpose. The book is fine, but a minor glitch occurs on pages 134-135. The same painting shown in two photographs shows that one of the photos is mirror-image.

This is the best book I've read in a long time. "How to Teach the Bible" provides practical tools and reinforces our calling as Christians to help others learn about God's Word. The author's style is easy and straightforward, but his words impart rare wisdom and insight into the challenging task of Bible teaching. Thank you, Dr. Coleman, for allowing God to work through you to create this tremendous resource.

This little book is jammed full of insightful ways to bring teaching the Bible to life for learners. I especially enjoyed the "Teaching Lab Activities" which are designed to help the teacher develop skills and to illustrate important points for learners. This compact volume could easily be overlooked, but it is such a gem that every teacher should own a copy!

Good Read

Review Date: 2005-07-25
This book contains four mini novels. The first starts out at the end of the Civil War in, of course, Key West. Written by a Christian writer, the book does not preach. The characters are believable with human strengths and failings, and you are drawn to them and their stories. There is passion without details you don't need and romance without syrupy mush or contrived "misunderstandings" that go on and on. There is history and exploration of issues of the time, although I felt the characters' attitudes on prejudice and slavery are somewhat liberal for the era, and at times I was jolted by dialogue I felt wouldn't have been used in the 1860's. There are a couple of villains to keep things stirred up and a few skeletons that come out of the closet. All together these are four good stories that you end up glad you read, and looking for others by the same author.

Good read

Lynn Coleman paints a warm, cozy picture of 19th Century Key West. Yet, she portrays the struggles of the day, racism and slavery, in a real and accurate way.

You will fall in love with Bea, Ellis, Cook, Lizzy, Mo, Richard & Isabella. Lynn Coleman maserfully tells four separate stories while weaving in characters and place from past tales. Feels like you are reading about old friends.

I recommend this book to fans of romance, or plain old fashioned good story telling.
