Gritty city

George Tice continues his visual exploration of New Jersey urban living with these ninety-nine photos. As with his previous books: Paterson and Urban Landscapes he still manages to see and take amazing photos of the ordinary and everday in his home state, though he did say in his Statement in the 1975 Urban Landscapes that he made five trips to Camden but found it too depressing! Luckily Paterson lives up to his expectations and there are several stunning street scenes here that I think are some of his best work. <br /> <br />'Market & Cianci Streets, September 2003' on page sixty-nine is typical I think. A corner shot with shops, apartments above, commercial signage, parked cars, street furniture and some people frozen at exposure time with shadows creating dimension and depth. A similar photo is 'Main & Market Streets, October 2000', both images are full of detail and texture and pull you into the frame. <br /> <br />Of the ninety-nine photos twelve are called Early Work 1967-1971 with the remainder from 2000 to 2005. There are three spreads of street scene shots, taken with a 35mm camera, with three stacked photos on each page, all the others are whole pages and taken with an 8&10 view camera which explains the rich detail. <br /> <br />I think it is worth commenting on the book's production because, in this case, it really is a plus for the images. The photos are printed in six hundred line screen which really is on the cutting edge of what is possible on a printing press. Most photo books in my collection vary between 175 and 250 but the publisher no doubt thought that to capture the detail in these photos it was worth the extra effort and this obviously required a better paper, too (200gsm Hello Silk). The end result, I feel, is not far short of looking at an original print. <br /> <br />George Tice's photos and the amazing production quality of Paterson II lift this book way above the ordinary and I think thanks should go to James Mairs, publisher of the Quantuck Lane Press for having the vision to produce such a beautiful book. <br /> <br />***FOR AN INSIDE LOOK click 'customer images' under the cover. <br />A 10th-generation native of New Jersey, renowned photographer George Tice began his thirty-year documentation of the vernacular architecture of his home state with Paterson in 1972, which formed part of his acclaimed one-man show at Metropolitan Museum of Art. History comes alive

Paul of Montgomery is a great historical fiction book which takes place during the American Revolution. Since I live in Rockville, MD (the town where some of the story takes place) I enjoyed the book even more knowing I live where history happened. <br />The story is about a boy, Paul, and his father taking part in the first vote as our new nation was forming. We get to know about their everyday life including, glassmaking, charcoal making and building a home. <br />I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in colonial life. We used it as part of our Maryland State history study. Historical fiction as a supplement to our regular history books really makes history come alive. <br />Jeremy Smith, grade 6, HomeschoolerWar! Paul Drury, 12, hears the drums beating and imagines himself performing deeds of great courage and bringing freedom from England to this new land. An Artist's Love of Savannah

Chistopher Aristide Desbouillons Murphy (called Charles AD Murphy for most of his 71 years) was born in 1902 in Savannah, where he actively played and explored and walked throughout the city he would later depict and define through his art. After studying in New York City at the Art Students League, he returned to his native Savannah. In 1929, he helped found the Association of Georgia Artists and in 1947 he collaborated with Walter Hartridge on the book Savannah, providing drawings and etchings of his native city.</p> <p>Just as his success peaked in New York in 1929, the stock market crashed and Murphy found it necessary to return home to his family. Of all the artists who have taken Savannah and its environs as their primary inspiration, Murphy was among the most sensitive and skillful. His work ranged from refined portraits of Savannah's elite to spontaneous depictions of African American children, from images of the city's grand homes to renderings of rural farms and shanties. Murphy's work captures a city in flux, a southern town slowly adopting a modern lifestyle. An incipient preservationist, Murphy documented many homes, neighborhoods, and landmarks that no longer exist.</p> <p>Murphy's work was included in annual exhibits of the Southern States Art League and at the American Watercolor Society and was shown nationally and internationally at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Cleveland Print Society, the Philadelphia Print Club, the Brooklyn Society of Etchers, the Savannah Art Club, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. I purchased the 'Power for Life' Bible, Crystal Cathedral for a lot less in price if I would have ordered it from the Crystal Cathedral. Delbeke et al hit a home run

Textbooks are usually out of date by the time they are in print. Not so with Delbeke et al's new Practical FDG Imaging! This book is not only timely but excellent, written by outstanding clinical physicians and physicists who are also world-reknown educators. It is a very practical, "real world" book that is released at a critical time of explosive growth in FDG PET imaging. It stands alone in filling a badly needed niche in the education of imagers using this new technology.<p>The early chapters on the history of PET and the physics of PET are very helpful in understanding the basic science and political milieu involved in the subject. It is sad that this technology, with so much to offer suffering patients, has been held back by regulatory red tape and government shinanigans. PET still suffers in this regard to a large extent.<p>The later chapters are very instructive in pitfalls, normal varients, and in demonstrating "real" clinical cases, from the basic to the complicated - just as a practitioner sees in a "real life" practice of taking care of sick people.<p>If you are involved at any level with FDG PET imaging, I cannot recommend this book more strongly.
