As an introduction to philosophy, it would be difficult to find a superior title. This makes an excellent addition to the libarary of philsophy students of all levels. The most important parts of each philosopher's work are given and then explained by Kolak in simple terms with clear examples. For the novice this provides a good introduction. For the more advanced student, a great reference.

Horrible advice is to say the least. David, just because your advice is how you want to be treated that doesn't mean that all men are like you. Don't waste your money. Every person's behavior in a relationship is changed by their environment but every person has a foundation about them that's called their personality type. Buy Rod Novichkov's How to Find Yourself and Your Best Match. Socionics. Then you'll discover how each person is different.

I read Dr. Dave's original book, Date Smart, and loved it. This book is just as wonderful. I've also had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Dave speak in person and the one thing he consistantly conveys is that you can have a successful relationship with anyone - if you just have the right information to work with. As with any 'self help' publication of this type, you have to be open to changing who you are and how you think. After all, if you haven't been having success, it's probably because you've been doing it wrong. Instead, open your mind, read this book, and get that relationship you've always wanted (and that you deserve!).

An emotional tour de force

A grabber that never lets go--I've read this powerful and moving novel a couple of times, and can't understand why everyone wasn't talking about it when it came out four years ago, and why they aren't still talking about it now. As a reality check, it transcends all PC and race issues. Reading it is a demanding but rewarding experience. Tamala, the unforgettable heroine, leaps off the page and into your heart. It certainly doesn't have a happy ending, but it is still an exhilarating one. I sat around for hours after reading it, absorbing the impact. Anyone who loves Coleman's short stories and poems will enjoy this action-jammed urban adventure. It's a must.

Beulah Land is the bloated Gone With The Wind rip-off that Lonnie Coleman is known for; but if you have never heard of/read this book, you are missing out on the one of those surprising, rare treasures in popular fiction. This fictional memoir bravely, sweetly goes to unexpected places, and tears your heart out in the process. I read and re-read this book many, many times, and each time felt those hot tears on my face in the final pages. You will love these characters, the evocative places/times; it has that quality Main Street does in Disney World, except you lose a bit of your innocence along the way. Growing up in wartime, and harboring personal secrets, makes up the mainframe of this story, and it is absolute insanity that this beautiful, simple book has been out of print for nearly two decades. Try it; you will not regret it.

immigration and masculinity up north

Review Date: 2005-04-28
I was looking for a book that explored immigrant masculinity. I only found this, but I am pleased to have read it. In this text, Professor Coleman analyzes the literary work of Canadian men of color and asks what it exposes about the intersection of masculinity and immigration.

Coleman juggles countless balls here. He cites ideas from Judith Butler, bell hooks, Sigmund Freud, and many others. (Then again, many have said literary criticism appropriates many ideas from other disciplines.) Unlike most ethnic studies text which only focus on one racial group, Coleman explores the writings of South Asian men and Black men. There is a touch of linguistic diversity here as he looks at the work of a Francophone Black author, though he never states whether he read the original French or a translated version.

There is one big problem with this book. Coleman selects texts that explore the hypersexuality of Black men and the hyposexuality of Asian men. These works points to depictions of Black men are Priapus-like and Asian men as castrati. Authors have been wrestling with these controlling images for centuries (James Baldwin, Edward Said, and Franz Fanon, are just a few examples of such writers.) Coleman never really states how Canadian men of color break the boundaries of these rigid projections. He scantly mentions gay men of color writing in Canada and I wonder if they have produced more transgressive work in this area.

Professor Coleman was raised in a missionary home in Ethiopia. Thus, he states that he relates to living in a country as an outsider, particularly one of a different race. He intersperses his literary analysis with autobiographical anecdotes. Even he admits that his may be patronizing. I think it may point to his tacit desire to write a booklength story about his life. Though he intends no harm, this may rub some readers the wrong way. Perhaps it hints that he does not have much to say about the texts he selected.

Not all Canadian immigrants are of color, yet no books from white Canadian immigrants are brought up. He stated that he already wrote on First Nations authors in the past. A comparative work would be a great idea for his next book.

This text is a much-needed intervention. I wish there were more professors in American colleges producing work like this.

Great Look At The Way Master Jesus Did Evangelism

I've been a big fan of Robert E. Coleman ever since I read his classic book The Master Plan of Evangelism back in the 70's. Therefore I was very interested in reading The Master's Way of Personal Evangelism when I saw it on Amazon.com. In a simple, but effective way, this book brings our attention to the attitudes and methods Jesus used to persuade and convince people to follow him. Episodes from life and ministry of Jesus Christ are examined and lay the foundation for any student of personal evangelism. I've used Master's Way of Personal Evangelism with undergraduate college students, graduate and with lay people and have found it an effective compendium to The Master Plan of Evangelism. Jesus said we should learn from Him (Matthew 11:29) The Master's Way of Personal Evangelism would be a good place to start.

Review by David Bromden - Author of "Gathering in the Mist"
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-08
The ancient Maya are a people shrouded in mystery. Archeologists who study them have consistently been left guessing when it comes to the end of the Maya's unfinished story. Why were the Mayan temples deserted at the height of their civilization? What scattered the people from their cities roughly 2,000 years ago? Was it drought, famine, or a shift in cultural beliefs?

"The Maya Gateway" tackles these questions through its compelling fictional story of Lydia Rosenstrom, a Maya scholar and glyph translator who works in the Maya ruins of PakabtĂșn. Lydia's story is one of love, loss, science, and mystery. Authors Wim Coleman and Pat Perrin combine their writing talents in "The Maya Gateway" to describe one conceivable explanation for the end of the Maya civilization. They use a tale that merges artificial intelligence with Maya mythology. "The Maya Gateway's" mixture of theological history, shamanism, and modern day technology make for an entertaining look into the Maya conundrum.

Coleman and Perrin create a small cast of believable characters who are thrust into unusual circumstance. Wandering a computer-simulated version of PakabtĂșn, Lydia and the others encounter more than a bit of dangerous reality within the confines of the computer's virtual world. Lydia's skills as a Maya-trained shaman offer her insights the others don't have, but at the same time her trained mind also opens her to greater psychological danger and mortal peril. Though the environment is simulated, the danger is quite real.

Within the pages of "The Maya Gateway", the reader will find a number of unexpected musings threaded into the context of the story. An interesting comparison of Schizophrenic delusions to Shamanic visions is made, and while that dialogue is not expanded or made a key part of the plot, including it in the book adds to the overall reading experience. Another discussion finds its way into the story related to the evolution of the human mind as contributing to the historic end of direct communication with God. It is clear that Coleman and Perrin find many topics worthy of exploration in their writing. A deliberation on the word "murder" as notably absent from the Mayan vocabulary is particularly remarkable when put in the context of a culture where human sacrifices were central to ceremonial life. There is also a segment of the story that details a foolhardy attempt is to debug a Maya God out of a computer program. Add in a 2,000 year old Maya legend that includes Jesus Christ and John the Baptist and it is evident that Coleman and Perrin have jam-packed "The Maya Gateway" with some thought provoking material.

On the surface, "The Maya Gateway" offers intriguing suspense and a good story. But within the thoughts behind and surrounding the story, it offers even more. I am a fan of books that don't end when I close the cover; of stories that make me think. With all the concepts interspersed into the plot line of the "The Maya Gateway", it is certainly a thinking man's novel, and a novel that I enjoyed.

Outstanding read!

An amazing account of how a man kept his wits in distress. Even with Mr. Coleman's clear headed thinking, he still made some grave mistakes -- from which, as a result of his will to survive, he was fortunate enough to recover. If you want to know the details of how a search and rescue operation is conducted on the high seas, this is the book for you. Sometimes too detailed, as the author himself admits -- but you can easily skip the technical parts which are not of interest. Still a great read without them!
