I read this book years ago. It surprised me because according to the jacket it was the author's first book & was very well written & the writer had done his homework. The story involves the Bradshaw family & how one member of the (by now) wealthy family could be convinced to murder the the dad/grandfather. I couldn't help being struck by how the mother's spoiling of the youngest child would come back to haunt her again & again. Over all, a tragic tale, told so well it was made into 2 seperate t.v. movies. Very interesting read.

At Stormy Time is a biographical story of a 19th Century physician, who rode from Ohio to Iowa on horseback in 1855, seeking a place to settle and to start his family. He became the Fayette town doctor, and the first Professor of Natural Sciences in Upper Iowa University. Dr. Charles Coleman Parker served in the 12th Iowa Inf. Reg. as Regimental Surgeon during the Civil War, and had key roles at Fort Donelson and Shiloh. The book contains a series of letters he wrote to his wife from Pittsburg Landing before and after the battle. Parker also served as a medical witness for the defense in Abraham Lincoln's most infamous trial as a lawyer, the Duff Armstrong murder case.
The format for the telling of this story is unusual, in that it attempts to connect the present with the past. It is a factual narrative about life in frontier Iowa, and about a most unusual character who does not fit any of the stereotypes from literature about that period. It is also a story about one of the most interesting and unique institutions of higher education in the country. This story should be of interest to anyone who likes history, education, the Civil War, or a personal search for meaning. It is a high-quality paperback, easy and satisfying read, which will probably entice you to read it again.

A GREAT BOOK BY A GREAT HUMAN BEING

A lot of people can talk a good game when it comes to "love" and "understanding" and "creating peace", but this woman walks the walk. She uses the story of her own life to show how you can bring love into any situation and how, by doing so, you transform your life and in that way, the world. I'm really not doing the book justice, because what I'm saying sounds so trite, so cliche. But when you can see someone living a concept, instead of just talking about it, the impact is great. And it's fun too. There are parts--especially about her youth in Argentina--that are hillarious. When people would ask her what her occupation was, she'd say, "human being". She may seem a little "out there"--that is, mystical--at times, yet she is also very out to earth--especially when she describes the countless affairs of her adolescence. I would like to see this book in every library in the United States--and for that matter, the rest of world. This would certainly be a better planet if that were the case. It may take 4-6 weeks to ship, but it is worth the wait.

Written by Andrew Conway (a professional astronomer) and Rosie Coleman (a primary school teacher), A Beginner's Guide To The Universe is an amazing, fact-filled science book especially recommended for inquisitive young readers ages seven to fourteen, but which would be intrinsically interesting introduction for readers of any age or background. Color artwork and photography superbly enhance the enriching and informative text packed from cover to cover with information about the solar system, planets, galaxies, and beyond. An amazing and educational guide to stir interest in the stars, A Beginner's Guide To The Universe is enthusiastically recommended for personal, school, and community library Astronomy collections.

Although it is intended for medical students, this comprehensive book would be useful to a wide variety of readers. I am a psychologist and teach medical residents, and I think this book is a marvelous review of (as its title says) Behavior and Medicine. It's excellent for students because it includes sample Board exam questions, but it's excellent for more advanced professionals because it reviews the basics and provides good ideas for further reading. Phenomenal illustrations also. Often edited books are uneven in their coverage, but this one has overcome that problem. A gem!

I thought my kids would never stop laughing! After we had read it, all I had to do in similar situations was remind them of Bernie - and they would laugh and relax about whatever they were losing their temper over. Definitely a good buy.

One of the most wonderful art books in my collection, not only the extensive coverage on such an amazing woman ceramicist, the first woman ever with a solo 50-year retrospective in her field at the Met, her life between NY and Italy soundly influencing her exuberant 'joie de vivre' artwork with so many large colorful photos chronicling all, not to mention the beautiful padded cover, the front her colorful animated 'Ming Sisters' and the back her animated feet, a continuation of her art, plus insightful essays on her work and philosophy. I feel like I've had a front seat personal tour of her enchanting and brilliant exhibit at the NY Met by the artist herself and am left in awe, uplifted and joyously inspired! A must for ceramicists, artists of any media, collectors, and all women, a wonderfully done book on a outstanding woman and artist.

This book is not your average parenting book! It is indexed topic by topic and divided: a kid's section and a teen's section for various parenting/child issues. If you find yourself stuck on what to say about a challenge you are having, there is no need to read an entire book - simply find the issue in the index and in just a few pages, you'll have suggestions for what to say AND what is best not to say.
The book is comprehensive, consise and really encouraging. I wish that I had found it 15 years ago...
