A strongly recommended addition to professional and academic library reference collections, Educational Resources & Instruction reference collections, Better Answers: Written Performance That Looks Good And Sounds Smart by academician, classroom instructor, and literacy specialist Ardith Davis Cole offers school teachers and homeschooling parents with an easy-to-implement, step-by-step protocol for helping students focus upon acquiring the basic literacy skills to meet state standards in the English language arts of writing. Each of the five progressive steps (Restate the Questions; Construct a Gist Answer; Use Details to Support Your Answer; Stay on the Topic; Use Proper Conventions) to teaching writing are laid out in individual chapters. Enhanced with six informative and utilitarian appendices that include samples of student responses, lessons plans, spreadsheets, resources, and more, Better Answers will clearly demonstrate how to train students K-12 to yield improved and improving written responses across the entire school curriculum -- and have continuing application in life beyond the academic classroom.

This is the absolute first book that my daughter would sit still for. And now we've read it a million times or so. :o) The illustrations are vivid and funny, and my daughter really enjoys counting the four chickens on each set of pages. It's also great for having your toddler point out various items pictured.

And Decorate He Did
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-21
This is a review of the 1972 edition of BILLY BALDWIN DECORATES with a Forward by Cleveland Amory. Tellingly, it is dedicated to his late mentor Ruby Ross Wood (who headed the first department store decorator department and was the ghost-writer for THE HOUSE IN GOOD TASTE). For the uninitiated, some of the most striking aspects of the book are the still-stylish rooms and still-valid advice. One of the Fathers of American Decorating, Billy Baldwin gives his thoughts on interior design illustrated by drawings and photos, in black & white and in color, of his projects. The photo reproduction quality is not to the standards of today's glossy coffee table books, but the content makes up for the short fall. Chapters are Taste and Logic in Decorating, Rooms to Live In, How to Work With A Decorator, The Elements of Decoration, The Bones of a Beautiful Room, Decorating for How and Where You Live, Your Own Personal Stamp, and The Big Question of Change. Each chapter also has informative sub-chapters.

Some of his most famous projects are featured. Readers can draw their own conclusions as to the similarities of two of the most admired -- his own small studio apartment in a modern high-rise building on Manhattan's Upper East Side and Cole Porter's apartment in the Waldorf Towers which housed is late wife's collection of French furniture. Both iconic Bachelor Pads have inspired countless imitations, rightfully so. Although Mr Baldwin claimed that "if you can tell I did a house, I didn't", his sense of style was unmistakeable and a good lesson to us all. This book is a must-have for everyone interested in residential design.

A basic text for science majors that will aid in developing vocabulary and important basic concepts
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-24
I think this is a very solid introductory biology text for science majors. Far from being a light pass through to get through a general science requirement, this book takes seriously the need to help those working to develop the fundamental skills in science. Biology is a rich science with a huge amount of vocabulary, a great many details to master, and connections to other fields such as chemistry and physics. It also becomes the foundation for most life science courses that will follow.

Solomon, Berg, and Martin have organized the material for maximum coherence without shying away from the requirements of learning a great many things during the course. They supply many helps to the student trying to get her mind around the material and support the professor in presentation to the students. They also supply online helps for the student and the professor. Thomson Learning also provides study guides and other materials available for purchase for those wishing to get supplementary help.

The 56 chapters are divided in 8 parts:

1) The Organization of Life (chs 1-6)
2) Energy Transfer Through Living Systems (chs 7-9)
3) The Continuity of Life: Genetics (chs 10-17)
4) The Continuity of Life: Evolution (chs 18-22)
5) The Diversity of Life (chs 23-31)
6) Structure and Life Processes in Plants (chs 32-37)
7) Structure and Life Processes in Animals (chs 38-51)
8) The Interactions of Life: Ecology (chs 52-56)

The authors have developed a learning system that they prize. It focuses on helping the student master the vocabulary and develop a framework for the generalized biological principles presented. They do this by providing clear learning objectives and expected outcomes for each chapter, part, and the course. They list in the introduction what they expect would constituted mastery of the material. It is too long to present here, but it makes sense for a general introductory text.

The chapters open with a list of several key concepts that will be presented in the chapter. Each section of material presented is given a clear and short learning objective. This helps the student focus on the point of the material and why they are learning it. And the text is beautifully illustrated. While they are aesthetically pleasing, they are also quite informative and aid learning. There is a serious pedagogic purpose to the color photos, diagrams, models, and tables.

There are three themes that become a uniting feature of all the material in the book: evolution (adaptation) of life to changing conditions, the transmission of biological information, and the flow of energy through living systems. I think showing how all life is similar helps and makes the adaptations clear, while showing how the successful adaptation fully implements these key principles of life.

Each chapter has a summary, some questions to help the student test his understanding of the material, and some material and questions to develop critical thinking. I particularly like the sections on "analyzing data". This is where the student is asked to look at data and draw conclusions based on the material learned.

Very well done and something that will benefit many students. I also think a general reader who is motivated to supplement and update their understanding of science could read through this text on their own and gain a great deal. However, obviously, a talented professor will aid the student a great deal.

The pictures and diagrams in this book are one of the best I've seen in all my textbooks I use in college. It makes college biology easier to learn from. I also highly recommend: The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations by Patrick Leonardi, Volume 1, Volume 2 and Volume 3. These study guides have practically every kind of question that can be asked on college exams. I used them and they helped me to prepare for my college bio tests more effectively. I got excellent grades with the aid of Starr's textbook and Leonardi's study guides.

Superior to Cambell in Many Ways!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-27
Having thoroughly perused this text after finding it on a Barnes and Noble bookshelf while looking for a superior biology text to correlate to the one my school is using for pre-med, I found this text to be superior to most of the other biology texts, and in particular, it certainly gives Cambell a competitive challenge. It's fine level of detail and thorough explanation I honestly think supasses Cambell on many, many levels. I personally would choose this text over all of the other Biology texts if you're looking for great exposition, easy comprehension, and great graphics. You can't go wrong with this text! Beautifully written, beautifully illustated.
