Cole Books

The review's title is a statement made by Steven Callahan in the foreword of the book. I believe in it. I'm a brazilian retired sailor, now working in sea survival issues. The foreword is an urge for reading, as the book itself. Callahan says that "sea survival begins from the time you step aboard and doesn't end until the time you disembark". He also advises mariners to increase their range of knowledge, training and skills. I think that this purpose was achieved by the authors, using clear and current informations.

Cole's translations of the poet Shmuel Hanagid, long ranked as one of the great untranslatables of medieval Hebrew poetry for his packed, punning and allusive lines, is a kind of miracle of transhistorical perfect pitch. The poems can be savored for the richness and variety of their diction on a piecemeal basis, but when the book is read whole, a man emerges with remarkable amplitude and roundness. This is a translation that ranks up there with those of Robert Fitzgerald. For all lovers of poetry, medieval studies, or the difficult art of translation, I say grab this book and savor it

This book sat on my shelf for years until I turned to it in a search of a specific poem concerning the 1013 sack of Cordoba. Unfortunately, that particular work is not included.

Nevertheless, this is an extraordinary collection of magnificent translations. The poems are as bright and fresh as far more famous classics, and the best contemporary works.

The first piece, "On Fleeing his City," is particularly heartrending. HaNagid opens, "Spirit splits in its asking,/ and soul wanting is balked;" and continues to deride those who mistake his "pitching from place to place,/ my hair wild, my eyes/ charcoaled with night--" as the results of "ease or gain."

He then pinions them as men whom "not a one speaks wisely,/ their souls blunted, or blurred,/ goat-footed thinkers."

But he rises above his tormentors, vowing to "sew the edge of desert to desert,/ and split the sea/ and every gorge,/ and sail in mountainous ascent,/ until the word 'forever' makes sense..." and "your soul which He loves be delivered,/ and the God of sentence/ send aegis,/ both beyond the sun and the moon."

Many short poems glint with wisdom of the ages. For example:

In business, don't get involved
with a man who tells all he knows;
if he can't keep track of a word,
how could you trust him with gold?

And the collection also offers many longer poems, including the second of HaNagid's 41 battle works, "The Victory over Seville," a "psalm of praise" to God, composed on Erev Sukkot, 1039, upon the miraculous defeat of Ben Abbad, the son of Seville's qadi (Islamic judge), whose followers had "slandered my people," "weakened and crushed them" and "divided their plunder,/ casting lots for their lands..." and who had "thought us already their chattel...."

HaNagid also writes of friends, and children, of his brother Isaac, of gardens and trees, and his forced exile from his home, which he describes as "ink/ in God's book/ across my soul, and every shore;/ and all on whom wandering is/ written...."

This is truly delightful work. All poetry lovers should read it.

Very useful textbook!

I read this book in a college class. Mind you, I didn't read most of my college books, but I couldn't put this one down. It gives a clear, intelligent, remarkably well-documented, fascinating description of how sex evolved and how that evolution effects the behavior of everything from bacteria to modern social humans.

This book is very accessible to any reasonably educated reader, regardless of your knowledge of evolutionary biology. And each idea is punctuated with a fascinating example taken from nature.

Why do lightning bugs flash, and what controls the pattern to their flashing? Why are there two sexes? Why is a red sports car sexy? You'll learn the (evolutionary biology) answers to these and countless other intriguing questions. This book is a great lesson in evolution and a revealing investigation of why aniamls do the things they do, from an African hamster to... you.

This book is for Virgins and non-virgins trying to regain their spiritual viginity. This book is a quick read and is very powerful. If you are a virgin and are questioning the value of your virginity this is a great book to give you perspective of this one-time offer gift. Very good of explaining (in a concise matter) how virginity is a one time gift. Once it's given the physical gift is gone. Cole does a great job of putting sex back in its place as G-D has designed. This book is captivating if you are questioning your virginity. This book is for both women and men. Lost your virginity? Still a great resource. I found the skills and understanding forgiveness to be very useful. I feel that the skills from this book and from this website http://www.djchuang.com/sex/skill1.htm give men (and maybe women) the ability to but sex and our perspectives back right with G-D in this sexually explicit society. I really enjoyed the forward by a very respected pro basketball player A.C. Green. This book isn't for anyone but for those who desire to pur sex back in its place. I wish I had read this when I was in high school. I pray that you will be blessed by this book as I am.

Sexual Integrity is a concise, powerful book that reveals the TRUE meaning of sex in its place as a part of Christian life.

It covers every aspect of sexual relationships in dating, marriage, outside of marriage. The book also reveals how sex has caused detriment in our lives because it has not maintained its appropriate place in a God-blessed relationship.

Dr.Cole boldly discusses sexual relationships that are 'taboo' to discuss publicly: abuse, pornography, promiscuity, and masturbation.

As a person who has struggled with these issues and have found them to hinder my spiritual life, I found that I was able to forgive myself for engaging in unhealthy relationships. Further, I am no longer ashamed of what I have done and I feel a release from the bondage of sexual immorality.

If you are looking for away to renew your spirit and relationship with God and struggle with sexual integrity, I highly recommend this book to you. You will never be the same.

Definitely emotional and fun. The poems have a real nice flow, even song quality on a few. I think the author pulls away from the norm and launches quite a bit of creativity on a simple, but deep level.

I really enjoyed this book it is a really great poetry book that makes your emotions run wild the poems are very touching and i would recommend it to anyone i think its a really good choice.I also would like to say that i love poetry and this is one of the best.

We used to read this book to our children, and they always loved it. It was especially well received by our son, though our daughter enjoyed it too. The pictures and poetry are about all sorts of slimy things. One of my favorite pages shows a hardboiled egg flying out of a man's mouth, "People with no teeth, it is said, can't eat a slimy pickled egg."

This book is pure fun, perhaps bordering on the slightly gross (which is why boys especially will go for this one). Great to read aloud to children 5 and up, and can be read by a third grader, I would guess.

This book has fun, colorful characters that seem to be from the imagination of a child. The rhym and rythm of the book are fun.
