Miss Frizzle and her class from The Magic School Bus are back. This time instead of science adventure the kids are off to learn about history. Miss Frizzle and her students travel back in time 100 years. They arrive at a farmers village in China. Here they learn lots of things like how to eat with chop sticks and how to grow crops like rice and silk.
Splendidly illustrated with accurate details, this book is a delight to read: funny, informative, colorful, clear and comprehensive.
An excellent, highly recommended book for children ages 8 to 12.

I bought this book for my first-grade son, who is a huge Magic School Bus fan, but usually not all that interested in social studies. He found this book very interesting, and we have re-read it many times.
The book is in a larger format than the original Magic School Bus series, which leave more room for all of the sidebar explanations that typify these books. Cole and Degen explain processes, like growing rice and making silk, that are easy for kids to follow, and may teach the adults a thing or two. A common thread through the whole book is a list of things that the ancient Chinese invented before the West, another point that may teach adults something new. The plot is a little silly, but it made my son and I giggle.
All in all, it's great fun, and a nice way to introduce kids to Chinese culture. Teachers could read it to a class, then delve more deeply into subjects that they want to pursue.

My child loves this book. She is 2 and first found it at the library. She was disappointed when it had to be returned so I went out looking for it. It is a book about monkeys being left at home and it takes the child through the alphabet. It does this by the names of the monkeys. My daughter loves it because my name is attached to a monkey. She can't put this book down.

What would happen if a human couple adopted 26 monkey children, dressed them in pajamas, sent them to bed and went out for the night? This book goes through each monkey's naughty antics throughout the house. The monkey's all have their names on their shirts, corresponding with the letter on the page, alphabetically. The naughty thing each monkey does also has something to do with his letter. (Jennifer writes her name on the table with JAM. Emily's wearing Mommy's EARRINGS.) This book would be good for reading time with your youngster. They'll enjoy the monkeys and get a kick out of the pictures.

With every turn of the page, my son laughed. This book was great. I have a paperback from Scholastic magazine, but I feel the hardcover book is well worth the price as the naughty monkeys get into all sorts of trouble. Several of the naughty monkeys do things that my son has gotten into trouble for, like cutting his hair and drawing on the walls. Great for letter recognition, and beginning letter sound. Each monkey has a name that begins with the letter sound and each monkey gets into trouble also reinforcing the letter sound. My son likes all the naughty monkeys, but one of his favorites is Robin. "Naughty little Monkey, Tracking up the rug. Her feet are very muddy from some holes that she has dug." Robin is carrying in a shovel full of dirt and you can see out the open door that she has dug holes in the yard and she has muddy foot prints all over. Very funny and very good art work.

Ken Cole's book illustrates with simplicity how our children can look within themselves to find and to make good news. The story depicts a young boy walking alone to the local barbershop to get his haircut. On his way he notices all things negative. After his interaction with the barbershop clientele, he leaves and notices all of the positive things around him. The story hits home for many of our inner city youth. However we can, we have to remind them that there is good news out there. We have to make sure that they know how to see it and how to find it. Cole's book is an excellent tool to use to introduce our youth to finding the "Good News" everywhere.

The first time I read this book, I was struck by the simple story line. A haircut for this little boy represents a major step towards growing up. The book effectively delivers that message that there is hope in every situation. I shared this book with my seven year old son, who also enjoyed the book. The pictures are almost surreal by transitioning from black and white photos in the beginning to a colorized version when the little boy's attitude changes. I would strongly recommend adding this book to any child's collection.

My husband is deployed to the Persion Gulf. His ship has a program where sailors can read a book to their children back home and have it video taped. This is the one my husband chose. My granddaughter fell in love with it and it has held her attention enough to hear it over and over. I am going to get her a copy today. Since it is on the list to be read to all the children of the USS Wasp sailors, I am sure that it will be enjoyed by all.

Norma Jean, Jumping Bean By: Joanna Cole is a superior book. The story is about how a kangaroo named Norma starts to make her friends upset due to her constant jumping. So, she stops jumping all together. Then one day at school, Norma's teacher says that there will be a field day at school. After that, everyone at school signs up for all of their favorite events, except for Norma. That day, everyone at school now wants Norma to jump again. Will Norma begin to jump again, and will she sign up for field day?
I would rate the book 5 stars out of 5 stars. When I read the book, it made me curious of what would happen next, and it never got boring. Even though this book is for younger ages, I still enjoy the book as a 7th grader!

I soon realized that I wanted a nutrition book for reference purposes and after searching around, ended up buying another copy! I am a nursing student and find myself flipping through the text when I need a nutrition question answered or if I want to calculate nurtitional info. Get this book if you're looking for a solid, easy to understand nutrition text.

This is a really good nutrition book. You may find it useful to keep, if you plan on doing a good job of teaching "nutrition and diet teaching" to a patient. In nursing clinicals you will find yourself responsible for teaching diabetic diets, heart healthy diets, etc... Also you will want to teach why any one of these diets are important for the patient to know and practice. This is the book to help you do it.

I own other nutrition books, and this is my favorite! In nursing school, my nutrition instructor, who was a registered dietitician with many years of experience, said that this was the best nutrition book on the market. Compared to the other books I have seen, I would agree. It is a wealth of information and includes both American and Canadian guidelines. There is a wonderful food composition table appendix included in the book that is very thorough nutritionally. The book covers carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and amino acids, digestion and absorption, metabolism and energy balance, overweight, underweight, and weight control, vitamins, water and minerals, nutrition through lifespan: pregnancy and infancy, childhood and adolescence, later adulthood, and many chapters on nutrition for health care issues such as renal failure, and diabetes mellitus. If I were not a nurse, I would want to own this book just for my own personal reference. I would advise anyone, whether in health care or not, to pick up a copy of this book.

The book is full of intersting personal stories, history, theory, and facts. I took Tom Garrison's class at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA. Wonderful class! He taught along with the book and every session was both insightful and interesting. Dr. Garrison is without a match in instructional etiquette and eloquence. Indeed, this book showcases his best work on the subject. Read the book... Be educated by the diagrams and charts... Be taken back at the amazing realms of life under the ocean... And most of all, be in awe of a marvelous earth (or "Oceanus") that is in great need of our consideration right now. Otherwise we end up dead like the aliens... Oops.. I hope I did't give a way the ending! If you have few bucks, come and take the class at OCC. You will be so glad you did. Just don't come in late through one of the side doors, or leave your cell phone on. He can't STAND those things! It drives him CRAZY!

Hornback's organic chemistry text is by far the most concise and clear textbook I have ever used for any chemistry course in college. After introducing new concepts, ample practice problems are provided throughout the discussion to help the student stay on track and test her knowledge. The illustrations are also excellent and Hornback encourages the student to use models, which is extremely helpful in the beginning of organic chemistry.
Unlike many science textbooks that drown the reader in confusing detail, Hornback offers the perfect amount of detail in his discussions. The problems at the end of the chapters, ranging from easy-difficult are also extremely helpful to master the material.
Hornback makes an allegedly difficult subject easy to master, presenting the information in a logical manner.

I used Hornback's 2nd edition for my introductory organic chemistry courses and found the text to be excellent, and often surpassing the in-class instruction I recieved from my professor. If you are an undergraduate student taking organic chemistry I would recommend this text above all others. I often refer to it as a reference now that I am taking advanced organic chemistry. If you read the this text, you will do well in your course regardless of the calibre of instruction you are recieving.

This is by far one of the best texts for undergraduate organic chemistry! The explanations are clear and concise, and ideas and concepts are well-organized. The book is easy to follow and the problems, both within and at the ends of the chapters, make the concepts crystal clear.
I used an earlier edition of this textbook and solutions manual when I took organic chemistry (2000-2001), and it (and some great professors) made the class easier and enjoyable. Having encountered other textbooks at other schools, I am grateful that the chemistry department at my alma mater uses this text. I am an organic chemistry TA now, and wish my students were using this book!
Bottom line, I sing the book's praises every chance I get! It's a bit expensive brand-new, but worth every penny!

A mechanistic approach to learning organic chemistry seems to make a whole lot more sense than memorizing/regurgitating the slew of reactivities available for each functional group along the way. Why then do we not have a text which allows us to do this? A few authors in the past have attempted to construct a text which views organic chemistry from a mechanistic (rather than funtional-group)standpoint, but none have been able to offer something an UNDERGRADUATE could embrace. Hornback has clearly and logically presented this often intimidating subject here, and should be praised for hurdling the barrier to offer the first readable mechanism-oriented text.

A good summary of modern American thoughts on toilet learning: basically, relax! As things have changed drastically since we were in diapers, this is a good way to bring older relatives up to date--and to verify the advice they give you! One thing to beware of though: the cover photo (girl sitting her teddy on the toilet) may lead to imitations in your house....

This book was very helpful, and priced at a much lower rate than other books with less information. It will give all parents - especially the frustrated parents - enough information to put their mind at ease. The main thing for a parent to remember is that their child will not become potty trained until they are ready... however, this guide will give you the information to know when they are ready, to talk to them without discouraging them, and what you can do to get them ready.

This book has completely calmed my nerves regarding potty training. I bought two other potty training books and while they were good this book was the most straightforward, practical, and easy to read of the three. The book discusses, among other topics, when your toddler is ready, how to prepare your toddler, and then step by step instructions to accomplish toilet learning. The chapter on preparing your toddler is great. It provides a lot of examples and continually reiterates that every child is different.

caroll's book is an excellent "advanced" organic textbook and reference. more of a teaching textbook than a strict reference guide, but all around great. it's without a doubt the best adv organic text i have come across (out of the 7 that i own and many others that i have glanced thru). highly recommended.

I read this text in my organic chemistry core course.I am certain that this is not one of the "run of the mill" texts in organic chemistry flooding market today.I must say it's really an advanced text that gives you less of statements and more of proposals. It stimulates reader's scientific temper and makes the reader challenge the simplistic and dogmatic perspectives prevailed in the contemporary organic chemistry. As mentioned by the author he could refrain himself from making it an encyclopedia of organic chemistry but he gives us the rationale behind the stabilities and reactivities of organic molecules by which one can enter into the "dreadful endless jungle"(in Friedrich Wohler's words,1835) with innumerous mind-boggling reactions with appreciable amount of confidence. It is not recommended for the beginner in the subject but is a real beacon for the graduate students in the feild.

Carroll's text does not attempt to teach organic chemistry per se. Rather, it tells the story of how many of our key ideas about organic chemistry have developed through the past 80 years. I certainly do not recommend it for introductory students, but it is an excellent read for anyone intending to pursue chemical research because it urges the reader to challenge yet not entirely disregard the simple, often incomplete ideas that are taught to introductory students.

Jack Cole was one of the true geniuses of the comic book art form. Here we have some great examples of his masterwork, Plastic Man. Plastic Man and his sidekick Woozy Winks are two of the greatest characters of the Golden Age of comics. Jack Cole's odd outlook on life, and his sometimes dark sense of humor, make these among the best of the superhero comics of the era. Highly recommended to superhero fans, especially those who don't them too seriously.

This second volume of "Plastic Man Archives" sees Jack Cole really hitting his stride. His stories are charming and comedic, with some dark overtones. His art is precisely cartoony, which is probably an oxymoron. His characters are drawn to appear like something one would see in the funny pages, but Cole packed into his pages incredible detail and energy. "Plastic Man" was easily one of the liveliest and distinct features the golden age of comics produced. It's light-hearted without being ridiculous, serious without being too heavy or grim. I'm glad DC is rolling this series out at such a fast pace.

Cole was originally told to create a character like Will Eisner's Spirit, and instead created something entirely wonderful. The originality and dark humor make this book stand out from all others. It appears innocent enough, and it is great fun, but there is an undercurrent of something wry in the late Mr. Cole's work, maybe even a little devilish. Read these originals from the original creator. It will be worth your while.
