This is a beautifully written book on rain that asks and answers a great many questions thoroughly and clearly so that young
readers can understand very complex processes. The language is scientific, yet also written to engage children in the beauty
and wonder of the world around them. The beginning of the book, in which the origin of rain is described, draws on children's
curiosity and imagination, and leads them to value scientific inquiry. The breathtaking illustrations clearly enhance the
story, the wonder, and the facts contained in the book. Each page is a delight to the eye!

Major General,USAFR,Ret.William A Cohen has put together an excellent book describing sixty-four criteria essential for success
in the military, business and life in general. Not surprisingly, the criteria is the same in each endeavour. He has experience
in war, been in leadership positions in business, authored over 40 books and currently a professor at UCLA teaching Marketing
and Leadership. He should know of what he speaks; and in this book gives us the benefit of his broad knowledge and experiences.
Reading this book is like attending his courses or seminars.
He uses the words of over 150 military leaders throughout history to cover each of the 64 criteria essential to Leadership. It is striking how these criteria have remained consistant throughout history.Nearly one-third of the book is made up of excellent reference material. He compares the ranks of the contributors from the different Services and Countries, which can be confusing. He gives a short Biography on 94 of the contributors;and finally an excellent index ,both by subject and contributors.
In the book, the author gives many interesting facts and stories about the contributors whom he quoted.
For instance;
Patton was such a great General;but why is so little heard about him after WWII?
Likewise,Napoleon was considered a military genius;so what led to his defeat and exile?
What would other combat veterns done in Custers position?
And did you know that,Admiral Hyman Rickover was born in Poland, graduated from the U.S.Naval Academy at 22,became an engineer, developed the world's first nuclear submarine, served 63 years and was promoted to full Admiral at the age of 82?
A great book for any military buff, and filled with material and criteria that is worthwhile looking for in present day leaders; in the Military,Politics and Industry.

This is an excellent book which gives plenty of insight into the nature of a small group which had a big effect on Middle
Eastern history.
The author, Geula Cohen, was a radio announcer for the Stern Gang, or, more precisely, the Freedom Fighters of Israel. The Stern Gang was characterized by its unwavering fight against British colonial rule in the Levant, its seemingly quixotic tendency to shoot it out with the cops, its eagerness to ask the Nazis to spare Jews from death, and its murders of two key bad guys: Lord Moyne and Count Bernadotte. Not to mention "the assault on the barracks of the British air-borne division, in which seven of His Majesty's soldiers were cold-bloodedly killed."
Were these criminal acts justified? No. But with Nazis killing Jews in huge numbers, it is no surprise that some Jews would ask them to stop, and offer to do pretty much anything in return. It is also no surprise that the Nazis refused such a deal. In addition, during World War Two, the British rulers of the area were knowingly condemning enormous numbers of Jews to their deaths by illegally closing the Levant to refugees, and one reason the British did this was that there was an insufficiently violent response on the part of the Jews. At that point, justification was no longer the most important issue to Jewish desperados.
Cohen joined the Stern Gang during World War Two, and that meant becoming a criminal. It meant stealing things. It meant putting up illegal posters. It meant that if you were followed by a suspicious looking man, you'd kick him in the groin and run away (and if he then started shooting at you, you might well shoot back).
The author examines what it means not just to be an outlawed fighter, but an outlawed Woman Fighter. To risk being arrested and have the judge call you "a silly thoughtless young girl" rather than give you credit for being a serious combatant.
I truly enjoyed Cohen's descriptive powers. Typical of her style is "Her sentences rocketed in every direction. Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale. She supplied air enough for only the first half of each sentence, the second was on its own." And it is easy to imagine her introductory words on the air, "This is the Voice of the Hebrew Underground! This is the radio station of the Freedom Fighters of Israel!"
We find out plenty of details about some of the Stern Gang's, um, adventures. And about Cohen's capture by British authorities. Cohen tried to escape by running away from the Bethlehem prison prior to her trial, but she was pursued by guards, shot and wounded, and recaptured. The British sentenced her to seven years for illegal possession of weapons and for illegal possession of a radio transmitter. Cohen spent well over a year in prison, finally making her escape after managing to get herself transferred to a Jerusalem hospital.
For years, the Stern Gang said that the British would leave. Well, they did. In 1948. And it made me think about what we all would be saying had they left ten years earlier, permitting many of Jews who died in World War Two to survive.

A lot of the essays in this book are highly specialized studies, only for Ancient History scholars, like 'Three Case Studies
in Hippocratic Gynecological Therapy and Theory', or 'What's in a Name? The Emergence of a Title for Royal Women in the Hellenistic
Period'.
More generally interesting essays are two women portraits: One of Fulvia, the wife of Marcus Antonius, and her political influence in Ancient Rome, with Cicero in the role of a 'whournalist'; another of Plancia Magna of Perse, a very wealthy maecenas.
For women's history, the following studies are important:
'The cultural Construct of the Female Body' : the Greek used natural female characteristics in order to justify the subordination of the female to the male.
'Menstruants and the Sacred in Judaism and Christianity': the reason for considering ejaculation as impure was to limit the frequency of sexual intercourse, 'so that sages should not behave like roosters.'
'The rhetoric of impurity only served to strenghten and justify the marginalization of women.'
'Women in the Spartan Revolutions': Women's economic power appears as one of the essential features of the Spartan revolutions, because they owned the majority of the land. The aim of the Spartan revolutions was to put an end to the unequal distribution of wealth, which was the major cause of the city's decline.
And more importantly (!), 'the Spartan men obeyed their wives and allowed them to become active in public matters.'
'Family Behavior of the Roman Aristocracies': in order to control the size of their families, the Romans possessed in addition to contraception, an efficient method: the exposure of the unwanted newborn children.
There was a social endogamy in order to enlarge the circle of allies.
'Women as Historical Subjects in Roman Art': the key concept is conservatism, a propagandistic form idealizing narratives of power and kinship.
'Marriage and the Married Woman in Athenian Law': Athenian marriage law was concerned first with the identification of legitimate children.
Excellent are the essays on Sappho and the less known female writer Nossis.
Highly recommended for Ancient History scholars and all those interested in Women's History.

Really, I do not why this book has not been reprinted. It is one of the best how-to-do books on writing that I have read.
Cohen describes all basic concepts about fiction writing in an acceptable degree, lists some exercises corresponding to the
theme and finally includes a "Writer's Bookshelf" list of books that serve as a reference of how a great writer used the theme.
Interesting chapters are those referring to the writer's mind and idea generation and about revision. These two themes are always of interest due the dificulties that everybody has to get a new idea for a fiction work and, for the revision, the problematic issue of taking and taking again a text that the author thought that it was finished.
Obviously, if the reader does not attend to the recommendations, does not exercise the skills as indicated and does not try to read a suggested master at least...well I think it will be immposible that any book can help.
