An excellent overview

This is an excellent book about how memory works. It is written in a very comprehensible way in layman terms although it is about something that not even scientists know how exactly it works.

It presents in a simple but not simplistic way all the latest approaches and studies about memory. The most rewarding element of the book is that it combines research from many different fields. The title is very appropriate too, since it really tells us about memory in real life as opposed to the world of the laboratories and science rooms. There are eleven units in the book and nine of them are about different kinds of memory, for example, memory for faces, for music, for language etc. Another good point is that it is very accessible.

I definitely recommend it to anyone interested in the matter either directly or indirectly. Especially teachers like me will find it particularly useful.

FUNNY! Why isn't this guy (guys?) famous?

Funny book, spooky accurate, knows his/their (?) stuff. It's clever. Lots of hilarious lists--items that are in a woman's bathroom and kitchen compared to a man's are spot on. And for bicoastals, lists of NYC vs LA, plus white collar vs white trash, and on and on. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants a good laugh. Good stocking stuffer for the holidays...

Superb Guide to Mentoring Adults
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-21
Norman Cohen provides in Mentoring Adult Learners an excellent resource for mentors and coordinators of mentoring programs for adults. He organizes the book around six "behavioral functions" of mentoring -- a helpful focus in my view for those who would like to see their mentoring efforts have significant influence on those being mentored. Cohen effectively synthesizes the research on mentoring from the fields of education and business with awareness of adults as learners and principles of interpersonal communiction. Numerous examples and practical suggestions put flesh and blood on the solid research upon which the book rests. Cohen writes with a fluid, easy-to-understand style.

One-fourth of the book contains four appendices, two of which provide alternative forms of Cohen's Principles for Adult Mentoring Scale -- one for education and the other for business and government settings. The scale is for mentor self-assessment, and Cohen encourages use of the instrument for research on mentoring.

Other aids for the reader include a strong reference list and a helpful name and subject index. Discovery of several distracting (and at times misleading) editorial/typographical errors was disappointing, yet not enough to diminish my appreciation for this superb book.

South Asia's geography and politics is of key interest to the developing nations, and so A Military History of India and South Asia From the East India Company to the Nuclear Era should be on the shelves of any college-level collection, whether it be military or civilian in nature. Collections also strong in Asian history and culture will find this history important: it surveys the region since 1700, covering major conflicts, ideological and social differences, military encounters, and more. Experts contribute chapters strongly supported by source materials and research.

I found this book while I was spending time over at my boyfriend's house. Within minutes I was on the floor laughing. He has a very frank and personal approach in his letters, which makes it all the more amusing because he really doesn't seem like he's trying to be funny. It's a shame this book is no longer in print, because I highly recommend it to anyone with a sense of humor that needs a laugh.

determination and achievement by Deaf
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-05
This is a must read book if you have an inclination for understanding of Deaf culture. Although it is a biography of one man who is deaf, the book is written to extend beyond the realm of one success but includes as the title says the lives of humans' "moments of truth".
It is this encouragement and his devotion to the moments that inspires the readers of the book. There is no limitations on your dreams!

(Small world! I was surprised to see our son's picture on page 174.)

An Intriguing Novel
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-20
This intriguing novel (that looks into the lives of some very complex people) begins in the 1930's in New England. The author doesn't spend a lot of time in the first chapter describing the characters or the setting, but instead in a few opening paragraphs, he pulls you in, holds your attention and doesn't let you go until the very last sentence and then you are sorry that it has ended. I found 'Monday' engrossing, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable.

A book for all those with a taste for non-fiction horror
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-04
This book I first read many many many years ago as a elementry student. I remember back then reading it white knuckled and unblinking for hours on end. I must have read that book twelve dozen times then. I contribute this book to sparking my desire to read and write about the unknown creatures that lurk in the woods outside our homes and crawl through the shadows of our cities.
