This book is the best I've found for words of inspiration and encouragement. I'm ordering my second set from Amazon to give as gifts. It transcends religious boundaries and relates to all people in a way that few books can. I've had a hard time hanging on to a copy of it because it keeps getting borrowed and passed from hand to hand. Cohen's writing style is beautiful and touching. The words stay with you and help guide you through the most trying times. Order one for yourself and at least one more for a friend.

I cannot say how many times in my career as a consultation psychiatrist I have wished for an AIDS psychiatry textbook like this one and none existed. Gone are the days of searching through scientific articles for clinical information or trying to apply the psychiatric principles and practice of other medical disorders to HIV patients. Dr. May Ann Cohen is one of the most respected experts in HIV psychiatry and along with her esteemed colleague Dr. Jack Gorman has drawn together a cohort of experienced HIV practitioners to author a comprehensive 41-chapter textbook. Part I provides the historical, epidemiological, immunological, and socio-cultural background. Part II offers a complete biopsychosocial asssessment of HIV patients. Part II looks at specific psychiatric disorders in the context of HIV infection, Part IV examines the neuropsychiatric syndromes characteristic of HIV infection while Part V is a state-of-the art review of the neuropathology of the infection. Part VI looks at the risk and preventive factors so important to public health. Part VII has a unique chapter on AIDS through the life-cycle often neglected in this now chronic disease. Part VIII covers both pharmacologial and psychotherapeutic treatments. Part IX looks at the all too commmon co-occurring medical conditions found in HIV/AIDS patients. And Part X is a much needed update and review on the rapidly evolving ethical and legal aspects of AIDs psychiatry. Some books simply had to be written and readers simply wait hoping they fulfill their expectations. Dr. Cohen has surpassed mine in this well-written and organized, clinically-oriented, yet research based textbook.

I was looking for almost 4 years for another book by this author, I found it! After that I bought everything else he has written. Having been a Jew in the Air Force Review, I know what he is talking about. I too received salami's and rye breads at mail call. If you want to see how all clergy folks interact, this book is for you. Buy it, read it, enjoy it.

A moving novel of faith, understanding, and commitment, told by a Jewish chaplain in the Air Force

In this novel set in the 1950s, newly ordained Rabbi David Cohen is given an offer he can't refuse by his Rabbinic Group -- to be an Air Force chaplain. He ends up at Landers Air Force Base in Mississippi. There are so few Jews at the base that he has difficulty assembling ten for a worship service.
The portraits of David and his family, the Chaplain's School, an air base in the still-segregated South, an air refueling wing flying the KC-97, the Strategic Air Command, and a deployment to Goose Bay, Labrador, are unforgettable. The plot allows for some interesting discussion of command, marriage and unfaithfulness, Israel and the Holocaust, and interfaith relations.
The author, Rabbi Herbert Tarr, had been an Air Force chaplain, so he wrote from first-hand knowledge. He wrings a great deal of gentle humor from David's inexperience, his attempts to apply rabbinic knowledge in unexpected situations, the ordinary human frailties and foibles he encounters, and the dilemmas faced by aircrew and young airmen. A twenty-first century reader will enjoy deciding what has changed, and what is enduring, about the Air Force since the novel was published. I served in the Air Force in the 1970s, and as I read the novel I said to myself, "yes, he's been there."
This lighthearted treatment then gives way to Labrador and its stresses, and then to the ghastly collision of a B-47 and a fully-loaded tanker over Landers AFB. Chaplain Cohen must console, heal, and make sense of all the tragedy.
In the end, Chaplain Cohen's "conversion" is to a deeper sense of humanity, a deeper feeling for the mission of the Air Force and the nation, and a stronger conviction that faith gives meaning to a person's -- and a nation's -- life.
During the Air Force's 25th anniversary in 1972, an Air Force Academy Department of English study judged The Coversion of Chaplain Cohen one of the three best novels of the Air Force. Many Air Force novels have been published since then, but this novel would surely remain high on any new list.

This book is really 2 books - one for adults and one for kids. The adult side is interesting, but is a little short on what to do. The kid side, on the other hand, is wonderful! It really describes, in kids' words, what these kids feel and what sort of steps to take or things to think about. My "capable" children are 12 and 9, but I would like even the 9-year-old to read this book.
