A simply fantastic book. This book describes the political, financial and personal backgrounds of the people involved in desiging and building this most famous of monuments. Complete details are given on the technical processes used to carve the mountain as well as the personalities of the people responsible for the project. The book does not only focus on Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor; but also goes into detail about the politicians (both local and national) who had input into the monument. Terrific pictures accompany the text.

...Mr Cohen's book. Devoured the book in two days. Fascinating perspective on Israel's military, particularly the training behind their elite forces. As an American, I was especially enlightened by Mr Cohen's analysis of our shortsightedness in combatting terrorism here in the states. The Israelis are trained to kill the terrorist. The average US police officer is trained to NOT shoot because of the bureaucratic mess he would encounter in discharging his weapon. Mr Cohen explains the Israeli emphasis on shooting thousands of rounds to become proficient and comfortable in using his firearm and in real world simulation whereas the US police force practices sporadically at a shooting range. He discounts the importance of aiming, but instead being instinctive in using one's weapon. Mr. Cohen's stories of encountering the enemy in numerous raids on terrorist hot spots make for a fascinating read. One mission describes his posing as a blonde US college journalist interviewing a leading terrorist organization leader. After making the target comfortable in two hours of interview time at a cafe, Mr. Cohen suddenly springs at his enemy, smashing him in the mouth, while his hidden comrades in arms take down the perp's two bodyguards. Great stuff. By way of background, I am a 52 year old southern California housewife and mother of two daughters and a son.

Excellent detailed, biographical, theory-drenched history

Fascinating. For anyone with historical interest in Soviet thinking, politics and history, this is a great read. My only complaint is that while it went into some depth on Bukharin's Marxist economic ideas, it didn't follow up with detail on actual economic policy after the revolution - probably because Bukharin wasn't intimately involved with those policies. To be more clear, it did go into detail on political questions of economic policy, but not on the nitty gritty of planning per se. If you have interest in the politics, policies, theory and inner workings of the Bolshevik leadership, the men who fought with Lenin to gain power and worked with Stalin to keep it, this is the book for you. Obviously centered on Bukharin, this book provides insight outside of just him; it is not a personal biographical work, its a political biography, as it claims, meaning that it focuses on his ideas, policies and politics.

It seems to me that few have seen the remarkable works of this master painter. If you haven't you're missing out. I had to write a review of this book, because no one has yet, and I wanted to express what an amazing job the Publishers did. This book shows Nevinson's work in great detail and has some of the highest quality pictures of his paintings I have ever seen. Nevinson paints some of the most visually stunning pictures of World War I. They are violent and vivid, full of energy and color...Groetesque and romantic all the same. Give these publishers (and Nevinson) some credit and ~BUY THIS BOOK~

From the Santa Cruz Sentinel, November 29, 2004

There's nothing like a photograph to cut to the heart of things.

In "California 24/7," created by RICK SMOLANd and DAVID ELLIOT COHEN (DK Publishing, $24.95), the heart of California is captured in 734 images, all taken during the single week of May 12-18, 2003, by an army of professional and amateur photographers.

Santa Cruz County is well-represented. There's a de rigeur spread of the Boardwalk. A BMX bicyclist caught turning tricks in the air at the Santa Cruz Art, Wine and Jazz Festival. And a shot of Chris Gonzales, Bro Print employee, taken by the Sentinel's own Shmuel Thaler.

There's also a sweet photo of Erma and Tony Dalbesio, both in their 80s, on the front porch of the home they've lived in for 56 years.

But of all the Santa Cruz photographs, the one of flower grower Kathleen Seaver best represents California's "struggle between the dream and the reality" posited by Diana Erwin, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, in her introduction to the book.

In the double-page spread of Seaver, National Geographic photographer Sisse Brimberg has captured an explosion of white, purple and pink flowers.

She's also captured the focused intensity Seaver brings to her work.

The photo's caption tells her story:

"Kathleen Seaver, 51, raises organic specialty flowers such as these foxglove-excelsior hybrids on her 5-acre Cadillac Mountain Farms. Twenty years ago, Seaver nearly died after gastrointestinal surgery. She prayed to live, promising, "no matter what," to grow flowers as thanks. Despite her husband's passing and the financial hardships of the business, she has stuck to her promise."

Readers can also order copies of "California 24/7" with their own photographs on the cover. For more information, go to www.america24-7.com.

I read this book as a part of research on the discovery of DNA. It had more than just good information. The book was written in such a way that it made reading the book interesting. Most books on discoveries tend to be dull. But this book is more like a story, the story of DNA. I would recomend this book to people who are interested in the topic. My favorite part is the foward, it is so true that it is difficult to see the work that led up to major discoveries.
