This is the bible for federal indian law. If you can afford only one book on federal indian law, this is the one. The original, written by Felix Cohen and published in 1947 is even better, but it is hard to obtain and very expensive. Rennard Strickland was editor of this updated version.

A primary text in the area of federal Indian law.

This is, according to publisher William S. Hein & Co., a "reprint edition" of the Handbook of Federal Indian Law, written by Felix S. Cohen while he was in the Office of the Solicitor at the Department of the Interior. As a reprint, the original title page is included and shows that this is the "Third printing 1942" version. This page also indicates that 1942 was the original date of publication. In other words, this *is* a reprint of the original work by Cohen, and it includes the Foreword by the Secretary of the Interior, Harold L. Ickes; the Introduction by Cohen's supervisor, Nathan R, Margold; and an Acknowledgements section by the author. Hein reproduced this text because the original publication, and a 1971 reprint edition produced by the American Indian Law Center and the University of New Mexico, were out of print, and this is - without doubt - a primary text in the area of federal Indian law. In 1982, an updated version of the Handbook, edited by Rennard Strickland, Charles F. Wilkinson, and others, was published under the title Felix S. Cohen's Handbook of Federal Indian Law (Michie; ISBN 0-87215-413-0). This rendition was described as "a more thorough-going revision of Cohen's work than was first anticipated" (p. x). Their introduction discussed the history, uses, and popularity of the 1942 Handbook and of the 1971 reprint. The 1982 volume, however, was presented in a different manner than Cohen's 1942 Handbook, but it did include legislative and legal materials through March 1981.

Happy With Me is an fully engaging and entertaining picturebook story written by Leo Timmers and filled with his amazing, artistic and slightly post-modern color illustrations about the joys and fantasies a young boy has in his dreams. In dreams, the boy can become any creature he's read about, from a strong elephant to soaring bird to a deep-sea octopus. Happy With Me is enthusiastically recommended as a truly delightful bedtime story for kids ages 3 through 6.

Albert Cohen was born in 1895 on the island of Corfu which belonged to Greece at the time. His parents took him to France when he was five. He was French, not by birth but by adoption and conviction. He became a Swiss citizen, spent time in Egypt and generally speaking was one of those people that didn't really know where he belonged.
I can tell you where 'Her Lover(Belle du Seigneur)' belongs. It belongs on your bookshelf. Witty, intelligent, beautifully written.
All passion spent; the absurdity of love shall spend us.

This book is not only a laugh-out-loud masterpiece, it is also the Bible of Romantic Love, which is to say, the most all-encumpassing work of sexual attraction consumation and disgust ever before wrought or heretofor imagined. You are a different person having read Belle du Seigneur than you were before, and you will be forever enriched if you've yet to take the plunge.

Read this book. Buy this book. Make a statement to the Universe that we are here for good reason: to live, to learn, and to love.

btw,
The English translation of the title could not be more innane or incorrect. Belle du Seigneur means litterally Girlfriend of God.

If you are studying this subject on your own and there are no one to help you with your work this is the book, you should have. This book explains the subjects to you as if your classmate is explaining them. The writer goes directly to the important sections of the subjects and doesn't deal with unnecessary details. The language he uses is perfect. There could have been some code samples but the solved examples can give you an idea on how you are going to code.

This is a greak book which gives you a deep insight to understand high order numerical methods for wave equations. Read it, you will be suprised at the beautiful ideas of mass lumping and the elegant basis functions constructed for spectral element methods. The author is a genius and construcs several innovative basis functions for both hexahedral and tetrahedron elements. The only shortage is that it is not very detailed in some advanced topics. You may need to figure them out by yourself.

This book is comprehensive and clear for both the Chinese Medical practitioner, and for the HIV patient.
Misha Cohen has done amazing work and research with HIV and Chinese Medicine, and we are fortunate to have this information neatly organized and at our fingertips.

A great book for people living with HIV/AIDS!

This book provides such a great wealth of information concerning Eastern views of medicine and health. It is written in plain language, in order for the reader to understand the different aspects of Chinese medicine and how it relates to the HIV/AIDS virus.

A person who is not sold on Western views of treating HIV/AIDS will definitely like the alternative therapies and ideas presented in this book.

Chinese philosophies of healing fit so much better into "balancing" the body. So many Western doctors feel that prescribing pills is the only effective way to combat HIV and AIDS. Chinese medicine teaches a person to examine the "systems" of their body, and how to keep them in check. By modifying your lifestlye, and practicing "body balancing" you can empower yourself and your body for the battle against the HIV virus.

People with HIV and AIDS should start listening to their bodies, and not to Western medicine dogma!

Well written, hugely timely, and a real page turner, House of Guilt is about Israel between the Hebron Massacre and Rabin's assassination. A story that takes the reader from the seediest sides of Tel Aviv night life to the strange minds of the fanatic settler movement, and all through the journey, Avram Cohen, the author's detective over four books, gives the reader an insider's view of what makes Israel tick. This book is a must read not only for mystery lovers -- and there's a geat mystery in it -- but for anyone who wants to understand what's going on in Israel.

"Ideology and Inscription" is a cutting-edge, startling work by a deeply thoughtful author. It has left me to wonder why Professor Cohen's work has not attained the celebrity status that much less adept theorists in the field have reached. His is one of the few truly innovative critical voices in a post-deconstruction era.

I was amazed at the rigorous critical writing Cohen manages to pull off here - hardly a single lapse into habitual patterns of thought, traditional categories, or cliched critical strategies. This book not only truly floored me - that someone is still this committed to radical thought inspires me to no end - but will serve as a boon to any 'movement' that needs a fix of theory, from women's lib to nomadic ecopolitics.

Review Date: 2006-10-10
This interesting volume contains hundreds of images of West Virginia made during the time of the Civil War, and includes photographs, sketches made by soldiers, hand-drawn maps of battle fields and camps, and drawings that originally appeared in newspapers of the day. The book does not try to give a history of the war in the state, but rather arranges material by type of image: photographs, soldier art, civilian art, newspaper sketches, and broadsides. Some of the most intriguing items include the hand-drawn maps already mentioned (one by future President Rutherford B. Hayes), the lithographs of Corp. John Nep Roesler, and, of course, the many different photographs of everything from natural landmarks (Hawk's Nest) to regimental poses to towns and locations (Gauley Bridge, Harper's Ferry). There is not a lot of text other than captions accompanying the images, although there are some lengthy official documents thrown in. One particularly useful inclusion is a listing of all the battles, engagements, and skirmishes that took place in West Virginia during the war. Not an absolutely essential book to have in one's Civil War library, but what it does, it does well and in an interesting manner.

Top Shelf Work - Highly detailed

By reading the brief introduction one gains insight into the struggle that Terry Lowry and Stan Cohen endured during their research for this work. Had it not for their intro the reader might have come away believing poor quality reproductions were used in compiling data for this book. Many of the items used in this work were from private collections, some of which were too expensive or not open for publication by the authors. Given the cost of reproduction these days, mirrored with the advanced age of the material used, both authors have come together to put fort an excellent work involving the war in West Virginia.

Even though some of the images are fuzzy the presentation of the material lends itself as a valuable resource for the modern day historian. The book reads well and is actually quite durable for a paperback. It's traveled back and forth from home to Antietam National Battlefield, more specifically Bloody lane, and has stood the test of traversing the fields.
From "Secession" to "Carrying on the Memories" the book flows smoothly through the various transitions of the newly formed state, giving the reader an excellent account of the turmoil of becoming a state. Many actions in regards to statehood via images, sketches and maps are now seen in print for the first time.

With over 450 photographs, drawings, maps and images this book will fill the bill for many West Virginia historians. The authors even note that more material has been unearthed so the possibility remains for a Volume II on West Virginia. As it stands, this is a well-written and researched work on West Virginia and the authors have done a beautiful job in putting the material together in such an interesting manner. Whether you hail from West Virginia or California this book has interesting snippets involving the Civil War for everyone. I highly recommend this book to fellow enthusiasts and civil war Buffs alike.

The Impeachment of Bill Clinton: Everybody lost...
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-03
Ultimately, Daniel Cohen achieves his sense of balance in "The Impeachment of William Jefferson Clinton" by finding all the parties involved guilty of something. The Republican party was able to take advantage of competing standards in being critical of Clinton's behavior, applying a legal standard to his political behavior and a political standard to his legal actions. In a similar fashion Cohen uses various standards to find fault with one and all, which, I dare say, is a position most young readers can readily buy into.

In 1998 the U.S. House of Representatives voted for two articles of impeachment against President Clinton: committing perjury and obstructing justice. Clinton was acquitted by the U.S. Senate after a brief trial, but Cohen is well aware that the story involves much more than the Constitutional issues. Cohen presents the Monica Lewinsky scandal in the context of the "Character" issue that had followed Clinton throughout his run for the White House. Detailing the string of events that brought Lewinsky to the attention of Special Prosecutor Kenneth Starr. Even though he is writing for a younger audience, Cohen pays attention to details: he points out the employee photograph of Lewinski from the Department of Defense was used because it was the only one available until journalists finally tracked her down. A small detail, but important because in the world of news images matter. The chapters in which Cohen details how the White House counterattacked the building story and the testimony that became the focal point of the impeachment effort.

During the whole impeachment affair I always like to read news magazines rather than newspapers, because I appreciated the sense of perspective that you get from something that comes out weekly rather than daily. Cohen certainly takes advantage of the persepctive time affords him. I also like the fact that Cohen does not let his objectivity stand in the way of being critical: he notes that Betty Currie, the president's secretary, would have been an obvious witness to call but that the impeachment managers did not want to have a string of black witnesses being questioned by white males. Again, I think this sort of detail speaks to the quality of this book.

Ultimately, the information in this book may enlighten, but it probably will not persuade anybody, mainly because everybody's mind is made up on this one. I remember thinking it was a big mistake for the U.S. Supreme Court to let lawyers go after a sitting U.S. President in a civil trial and when Clinton denied having "sexual relations" with Lewinski I immediately knew that he was ruling out intercourse, but not other things. Along with what happened in Florida, it was an interesting couple of years educating children about the wonderful world of politics in this country. Of course, I am not sure too many students are interested in beating this particular dead horse, but this is an excellent treatment of the sordid chapter of recent American history.

A Fair Tale

Extremely well-written in an unbiased telling of the facts, Cohen presents this entire scandal in "the best light possible." Told chronologically, he incudes black/white photos and documents that keep this book moving at an acceptable pace. A much appreciated addition to any school or public library, this will be a popular reference for any school project concerning Presidents. Readers are left to draw their own conclusions about the "charmed" life and bad choices of this U. S. President. You can't do much better than that, Mr. Cohen.

Great Account of the Los Angeles Underworld
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-09
If you ever do any research on the LA underworld, you'll see this book cited time and time again. It's the definitive source. Mickey Cohen tells his story in his own words, which only adds to the flavor of this colorful memoir. It's a must-have for anyone wanting to research the Mob in LA. My only gripes are very few -- the book jacket promises that Mickey names names, which he does most of the time, but not all of the time. He also brushes over details on certain events, such as the arrests and disappearances of Frankie Niccoli and Davey Ogul, which were probably common knowledge back when the book was written, but are largely unknown now. Perhaps if his co-writer had chimed in a bit more. Plus, Mickey passes himself off as a classy guy (who can blame him), when in reality he was still a bit of a hustler. What really impressed me about the book, though, was that after doing more research on certain events, I found that Mickey's memory was pretty accurate. For example, I compared his account of the "Snow White and the Seven Bookies" incident to a court indictment that described the incident in full, and Mickey's account (even after getting beat over the head with a pipe while in prison) was pretty spot on. This book is definitely worth tracking down.
