This book is interesting,informative and accurate. It has a lot of nice colorful illustrations.

In order to enjoy this book it is important to understand what attachment style is. The book describes Bowlby's (1969/1982) working model framework. Bowlby's (1969/1982) theory concluded that there are tendencies that are part of an attachment system, that functions to regulate the type and amount of contact between infants and their primary attachment figures. According to Bowlby, this system not only covers the infant's biological needs but their emotional needs as well. His theory states that if the proper contact is made between the caregiver and the infant, the infant will have a more successful transition into adulthood. Bowlby hypothesized that infants first use the attachment figure as a sort of proximity maintenance. This suggests that infants enjoy the presence of the caregiver and protest any separations from him or her. Secondly Bowlby thought the caregiver served as a safe haven for the infant, such that the infant would seek the parent for reassurance and safety. Finally, it was Bowlby's conclusion that the child used the caregiver as a secure base from which he or she could explore the environment. If the child did not find the parent as a secure base, he or she may have problems developing and maintaining relationships. Many studies have used this idea and built off of it for adult relationships such as Bartholomew and Ainsworth. Using many current respectable studies. The book is very detailed and easy to follow. I highly reccommend it to anyone doing research in this area.

I just LOVE this book. This is a book I found at my local library and wanted for my own.

This book was a very good book about the Battle of a Ship that was Full of Young Soles that never once left their posts during a long battle that they new was going to cost most of them their lives. I studied the U.S.S.Coral Sea during the time that I was on the sister ship named after the one in the Battle and the book was as close to the battle as you could get but it should have gave more credit in the back of the book to the young men who fought the battle and lost their lives. I find it in most of the books about famous battles that they do not give the men the credits due them.It is more menningful to reconize the men than the ship. I feel this was as I Loved being part of the New Corral Sea CV-63 in our Navy today but would love to be able to give the men in battle that glummy morning more reconiztion along with all who has fought the battles since. We all fought for are country and it is due time that the people here at home gave all the brave men more for all that they gave for their Home Land. Thank You Mr.Robert A. There is a photograph taken during WW2 of HMS Maori with her bows out of the water and her stern below the surface where it rested on the seabed in Malta's Grand Harbour. That ship fought for almost 24 hours before she was finally lost.

In mid December 1941, Maori was in company with HMS' Sikh and Legion and HM Netherlands Ship Isaac Sweers steaming past Gibraltar at a time when the two 5,200 ton Italian cruisers Alberico Da Barbiano and Alberto Di Guissano were known to have loaded cased petrol at Palermo before sailing for Tripoli at dusk. Force K (the Malta-based strike force of Cruisers and Destroyers) sailed to intercept this enemy force and the four destroyers were positioned between the enemy and Palermo - should they turn back.

As it happened, the attack by Force K was cancelled because of the critical shortage of fuel at Malta but the Italians did not know this and did turn back. It was dark when the destroyers attacked the much larger cruisers which were caught completely by surprise. Within a few minutes both cruisers were lost. The destroyers had scored a spectacular victory and went on to receive a heroes welcome when they steamed into Malta's Grand Harbour later the next day.

This book gives details of this and other operations and is all the more remarkable for having included a photograph of almost every notable ship mentioned - both British and Italian.

This is the second book I have read by Peter C. Smith, and like the first ("Hold the Narrow Sea"), it was a delight, and is highly recommended.


"The Battles of the Malta Striking Forces" deals with the history of the Malta-based surface striking forces in 1941, a time during which they proved a veritable thorn in the side of the Axis, and contributed directly to the Commonwealth victory on land in Operation Crusader, which started in November 1941. The narrative describes in detail the key actions in which the striking forces were involved, most importantly the convoy battles on 16 April 41 and 8/9 November 41 and the destruction of the light cruisers da Barbiano and di Giussano by the Royal Navy's 4th Destroyer Flotilla. The book ends with the first battle of Sirte, and the destruction of Force K on a minefield north of Tripoli on 18/19 December 1941. It also describes the strategic situation in the Mediterranean, and how these actions were linked into events in other parts of this theatre. Appendices describe the warships used and list them, the load of the Beta convoy (better known as Duisburg convoy) which was entirely sunk on 8/9 November, signals from and to HMS Penelope sent during the fateful night of 18/19 December, and an interesting list of gunnery effects during the Duisburg convoy battle. An index is also included, which is a great help. The numerous pictures and maps selected for inclusion are not only helping understanding the events, but add life to the book as a whole.


The authors have obviously gone to great lengths to research this short but important section of Malta's history in the Mediterranean war, looking both at unit records on the Royal Navy side, and the official history of the Italian navy. While there are minor niggles (e.g. the consistent misspelling of the Duisburg as Duisberg), and some typos and date errors, I think this book shows clearly that history books do not need to be dry, heavy tomes that can double as weights in a fitness programme or door stops. It is packed with information, yet readable. At just 120 pages in a pocket-book format, this book contains all one might want to know about the actions of Malta-based strike forces in 1941. With one clear exception however - the book does not discuss the role of ULTRA intelligence in the actions of the Royal Navy forces. But this is clearly not the fault of the authors, who researched, wrote and published in 1974 before the role of ULTRA in the Mediterranean became known. For those interested in this aspect, I can only recommend Santoni's "Il vero Tradittore", or as a second-best for this specific aspect, Hinsley's official history of British intelligence, Vol. II.


A particularly welcome aspect of this book is the positive and respectful attitude the authors show towards the performance of the Regia Marina, the Royal Navy of Italy, which has been slandered far too often in the memoirs and papers particularly by German officers. The brave and determined actions of commanders and ships companies, such as Capitano di Fregata Mimbelli of the Lupo and Capitano di Fregata dell'Anno of the Antonio da Mosto, both of whom conducted hopeless defenses of their charges in the face of a vastly superior force in November and December 1941, or of the destroyer Luca Tarigo, which sank the destroyer HMS Mohawk with a torpedo fired by a junior officer while she herself was disabled and on fire, are recorded in detail, and with the respect they deserve. Reading this book it is clear that the Regia Marina was no push-over, and that the successes in the Mediterranean had to be fought for by the Royal Navy, and did not come for free.
I do not think that any serious student of the sea war in the Mediterranean can do without this book, and those looking at the land war in North Africa should also get themselves a copy. I would hope that Mr. Smith would find the time to update the book, or maybe expand it to include the role of the British submarines, and the Fleet Air Arm and Royal Air Force units operating from Malta.

Kids ages 6-8 in grades 1-3 will find this elementary primer on boa constrictors adds to Enslow's 'Zoom in on Animals' series with a little over twenty easy pages of bright information. Opening with an unusual 'words to know' page, chapters quickly discuss parts of the boa snake, its life cycle, and its actions, supplementing many colorful, dramatic close-up photos with facts. A perfect choice for kids who love dramatic pictures and clear facts.

I found this book to be intriguing and uniquely personal. I highly recommend this for anyone who really wants to know what it is like in Iraq - I'm here and I know that the writings of Ms Prouse are accurate.

She captures the essence of the challenges we face here at a time when there are many questions that really need serious answers. I highly recommend this for anyone who is wondering what is really going on over here.

I want to read the book!

This is one of those books that you can't put down. When you must, because it takes only two hours to read it, you want to put it into the hands of everyone you know - young, old, at home and abroad. It has special value as a record of a time and a place - Sydney, Australia in the 1890s - but it has a universal relevance.

Eugénie McNeil, in her 80s, impressed her daughter with the sharpness and clarity of her childhood recollections. Her daughter, Eugénie Crawford, wrote down all she heard as her mother reminisced. This little book, first published in 1972, is the result. If reminiscences gleaned from the elderly are often of limited and local interest, this makes an exception. You will meet an array of sharply observed characters, depicted with wit, charm, and a wicked sense of humour.

One such is a rarely seen middle-aged bachelor, Mr Chapman. His annual appearance proved to be the most popular item at the local church social. "He carefully drew and line down the middle of his face and blackened one side. With this side towards us he declaimed the lines of the jealous Moor. Facing the other way, he spoke in profile the part of Iago. I'm sure it was only the possession of a particularly bushy moustache that discouraged him from attempting Desdemona."

Look out for it, ask for it, and urge periodic reprints. My daughter, another Eugénie, found it in an antique shop in an Australian country town. It has been well circulated since then.

Adriana Arden's Alice series are some of the top books in the erotic fantasy genre. This book is less a fantasy but still has fantasy elements as some of the appliances used for punishing the girls are probably not practical. But it has a lot of good BDSM, Ds and MS as will as well written characters and erotic scenes. Good story line although the plot is OK its not the strong point of the book. Excellent read!
