Powerful Praxis, Limited TheologyReview Date: 2005-07-24
This sets the stage for the subject of mentoring. The authors state: "We do know that [leaders'] development was significantly enhanced by a relationship to another person. [...] Certainly the kind of mentoring we will describe in this book can help prevent failures in leadership."
There are certain methods of mentoring which are successful, and certain methods which lead to unsatisfactory results. Also, there are proven methods for making mentoring work. This book describes such methods in detail. Further, the book amply demonstrates how entering into a mentoring relationship may add a purposive aspect to one's ministry or spiritual growth that otherwise may be missed. I adopted the methods of this book for mentoring a colleague who felt adrift in his ministry, and he was easily encouraged to set a new focus and take his ministry to a new level.
On the other hand, The Mentor Handbook would seem to be partial or "blindered" ("blinkered" in the King's English) in its theological approach. There are two major theological approaches to mentoring. To put it simply, one has been described as "grooming" ministers, while the other has been described as establishing their "calling". The emphasis of The Mentor Handbook is clearly on grooming. It refers to this as a "relational power transfer". In keeping with this, the book has a heavy emphasis on the transfer of values. Yet there is virtually no reference to the more characteristically Protestant type of mentoring which would facilitate an "encounter with the Holy".
Nonetheless, the book represents a very useful resource (a full 400 pages), which could make the vital difference to ministry in a given circumstance -- and it offers one an excellent grounding in some of the more practical aspects of mentoring and being mentored.

Simply AwfulReview Date: 2002-12-02
I did appreciate that Snyder stated up front, in his Introduction, that he will be writing about the book from his "Christian" standpoint. Therefore, the reader should know what to expect. Unfortunately, this warning is insufficient. Contrary to one of the other reviews, I felt that the book was highly partisan.
Snyder's underlying premise is that the Republicans sought to save the country from ruin and that the Democrats were partisan with no real basis to oppose impeachment. This is based on deciding that the President's actions were an impeachable offense, i.e., a high crime or misdemeanor. This approach is far too simple and allows Snyder to take cheap-shot after cheap-shot. Unfortunately Snyder fails to report the facts in an objective manner.
Snyder acts unaware of legalese and its role in the judicial system. Stating that it depends on what the meaning of is is is something that occurs in courts throughout the country everyday. Perjury occurs everyday. The fact that so few people are in prison for perjury does not mean that it does not occur. Inestead, it shows how difficult it is to determine intent and how rarely prosecutors will bring actions relating to perjury.
You can say to yourself, that this review was written by a crazy and bitter Democrat, but if you buy this book, you'll be sorry. There must be a library nearby that has a copy if you are curious.
There is no Pulitzer Prize ahead and there should not be. To assert otherwise is simple partisan raving.

Each manager was interviewed about their personal and political careers prior to impeachment and how that influenced their approach to it. Then the author followed with what role each manager played in the impeachment inquiry in the House Judiciary Committee as well as before the full House, quoting liberally from their statements in the Congressional Record. Each manager then reflected on their participation in this historic event and its effect on the current and future political scene of our country and the rule of law.
All in all, the book flowed nicely, sprinkled with quotes from Clinton supporters as well. I highly recommend this book to those interested in the Clinton impeachment from the personal perspective of those who were most familiar with the evidence and prosecuted what some have referred to as the trial of the 20th century.

Book is not for DemocratsReview Date: 1998-11-17
The Clinton Scandals by William A. Whitaker is a political satire set to poetry on the public and sometimes alleged private life of Bill and Hillary Clinton. The story is told from Bill Clinton's point of view in a gun to temple manner (instead of tongue in cheek) and is very hard hitting. This book is not recommended for young children or those who agree with or are left Rush Limbaugh on the political scale.
The 160-page book starts swinging at the Clinton dynasty from the cover and only lets up when the book is placed in the drawer. This book is funny in many ways and gets the point across that the president is less than faithful or even discreet.
With 45 pages of political satire cartoons, which are minorly risqué, this is not a book for children or those of the Democrat persuasion.
Whitaker begins this yarn with Clinton explaining how he became president. "My fellow Americans, I've got a song to sing about how I became
y'alls scandal king first I shucked my morals, ethics and all soon I was sleazin' and havin' a ball..."
The opening lays the groundwork for a Clinton roast that would make a Texas barbecue seem like an English tea party. The tale takes pot shots at everyone ever associated with Clinton.
Intertwined in the Clinton tableau is a "Clinton Scandal Quotient" quiz. It can be taken while the reader is going through the book the first time. But I don't recommend it. It stops the flow of sometimes foul poetry that takes many of its hits Clinton style-below the belt.
Not one scandal has been untouched. It is almost Ken Starr style in which Whitaker may have spent too much time grinding his ax. Portions of this book kneeled lower than Monica. Especially the parts that deal with Vince and Ron and the controversy surrounding their mysterious and untimely deaths.
One cartoon depicting the scene of Ron's death is rather graphic in its nature and done in poor taste. Perhaps death should not give all people absolute respect. However, their families should be considered.
The book ends with the following excerpt: "I'll be moving to Hollywood in pursuit of my new career where my good buddy Stephen will help me turn into a profiteer nobody else could accurately portray this scoundrel, don't y'all see? the leading role of the disgraced president is custom made for me."
If you enjoy political satire and can get beyond some of the seedier side of this book, which may or may not reflect the core of the Clinton Administration, I encourage you to do so. The book is thought provoking and makes you wonder how much is satire and how much is truth.
But it bears repeating this book is not for those of the Democrat persuasion.
