Like the first reviewer, I too watched Post on C-Span describing his studies and answering questions. Unlike the first reviewer, I was struck by Post's professionalism, wisdom and mastery of his subject. He was also, quite righly, unwilling to be drawn into political debate, although some questioners attempted to goad him into it by making outrageous statements of political fiction disguised as questions.

I feel the first reviewer is biased and even admits to not having read the book.

This is a book that should be read be every thinking person who has an interest in world conflict and how the psychological make- up of leaders effects the conduct of their policies and administrations.

His description of Saddam Hussein, compiled after years of meticulous research and interviews, shows how a miserable childhood combined with a specific psychological make-up can produce a "malignant narcissist", who is a danger to everyone around him. It shows that trying to "give him a chance to reform", is a policy that is bound to fail, because it will only fan his delusions further. SH is not, according to Post a madman but a calculating planner with clear goals and objectives. SH is also, it seems, a murderous sociopath.

This book is like having the play-book on SH. It enables us to understand what he does, why he does it and how he is likely to react to events and to the pressure brought to bear on him by military action. It enables one to gain an insight into events beyond the polemic of political debate.

READ IT!

Curious Coupling

Of all persons to be paired in a remote manner by psychological review, it's interesting that the author should explore the personalities of these two prominent persons while both are alive, and in theory, able to defend themselves. While Hussain may not have been available previously upon the initial writing, the fact that he is now in custody makes the analysis considerably more pertinent in view of recent news reports and discussion about what to do with him. While it is not the pairing that most would imagine could produce the height of contrast given the monstrous depiction of Hussain's crimes, the concept of evaluating the psychological profiles of leaders who wield such enormous power by their charisma as well as their position in world events is an admirable endeavor, and may well aid us in choosing talented leaders with great vision, and hence, great potential to either help or harm the world in due measure. Certainly, such a projection by perspective may lead to evaluation of other important figures in positions of influence, either in government or in business with decidedly greater opportunity to see where or by whom the nation is being guided, and in what direction. It may even prove useful for many in Congress who seek to leverage their positions of influence in certain directions, or who may use them to stall and thwart legislation recognized to be important or urgent. Could this pattern also apply to the Supreme Court to greatly increase the degree of scrutiny by which our "elected" leaders govern themselves? What a prospect! Imagine the secrets that would unfold given the nature of egos that inhabit our universe and where they seem to congregate and preside. These eyepopping examinations may provide entirely new perspectives and responsibilities when it comes to elections, giving us both foresight and more than a little hindsight. Surely, pairing these two between the covers of this anthology meets that criteria well.

I suspect that the review by Amanda Kane hits the nail on the head. I have not read this book but just finished seeing a talk by this author about his book on C-Span.

I saw bits and parts of his talk, but it was not holding my interest as I was hearing mostly "the same old stuff" about Saddam. I saw mainly the question and answer period.

The book title shown on the screen was only the first half of the title, the more general "The Psychological Assessment of Political Leaders."

I heard him mainly discussing Saddam Hussein in a world context.
Someone asked him whether he had done a profile on Bush and Sharon. I was struck by the abruptness of his reply, about Bush, that he restricts himself to foreign leaders, and about Sharon, bruskly, no he hasn't done him.

My alarm bells of "What is his political bent vs. objective scientific study" immediately went off.

This was compounded when the camera finally panned to the view of his book, the title in full and the picture of Bill Clinton.

Following this he was asked about a profile of Arafat, which he happily answered.

I came to the Amazon site interested in find out more. I did, enough to know that this is not a book on which I would waste my time.

This book is a chilling review of what Clinton is willing to do to raise money. His ties to the Communist Chinese is extremely well documented but unfortunately, almost completely unreported by the national media. It is noteworthy that Clinton had full knowledge of the technology transfer to China, and did nothing to stop it. Bill Clinton will probably go down as the most corrupt President America has ever had, the the negative effects of his relations with the Chinese will be felt for generations to come. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in knowing the truth about Clinton's fund raising practices, and the rewards to those who "donate."

Resistance Is Not Futile

Mr. Timmerman, a long time investigative reporter with impeccable credentials has compiled and published the results of his investigations (formerly published in different publications) in his new book, entitled 'Selling Out America.' The collection of his published stories in one volume details the chilling breach of US national security and the connections within the Clinton administration. Also included in this well-laid-out publication are his personal notes and insight into how these dealings have been covered up by US officials, including how the Clinton administration removed government employees that failed to follow the new policy of wholesale appeasement to the People's Republic of China and the media counterattack against the Cox Report and any others who dared to investigate.

'Selling Out America' provides the reader with a clear understanding of how the US policy of engagement with the PRC has gone well beyond engagement and entered the realm of kow-towing to the Chinese Communist leadership.

This book is a must read for the American people as the next US president will either clean up or continue this foreign policy disaster.

As citizens, we can make a difference, in the words of Mr. Timmerman: "Resistance is not futile"

Timmerman's latest book is one of the most important books that any citizen of the United States can read. It is especially a must read for any person who is a part of the defense, aerospace, or computer industries in this country. He really fills in the blanks for the questions that so many of us with industry experience have been asking since the late 1980's about what has happened to our national security with regard to technology transfer and why no action has been taken by the Administrative, Legislative or Judicial branches of our government to correct the problems that his book so well describes. My husband and I have spent 40 years in the defense industry, and this book says it all. Thank you Ken Timmerman for having the courage of your convictions.

Knowing Kenneth R. Timmerman's reputation as a journeyman, I read this book with quivering anticipation hoping a professional would, at last, address our nation's continuing refusal to address the ramifications of the China-Lube Proclamation. Despite a perky warm-up in the introduction (congrats to Chris Cox!), short shrift is given to China-Lube. Readers who are interested in the West's increasing dependence on Lube Technology and its possible misuse by rogue elements of the Chinese small device industry should look elsewhere.

I am often skeptical about "unauthorized" biographies, they're usually no better than tabloid trash. However every rule has an exception and She Took a Village is just that book.

Gottlieb certainly knows his stuff, his display of the First Lady shows exactly where she stands or in most cases where she stands until confronted. Gottlieb exposes things in this book you will not find anywhere else.

From the early days of college to Whitewater to every other scandal of this administration, a woman who is power hungry and will stop at nothing to get what she sees as hers confronts the reader.

After reading this book I had to stop and think - just who is the president of the United States. After reading this book the jury is still out. With a great price tag, this book is certainly one for the collection.

Drivel, poorly written, yellow journalism at its zenith.

We reviewed this book for our library's book club but unanimously threw up our hands and declared "no way!" The author appears to hate smart women and the First Lady in particular. Made us wonder just how insecure he is and why. There is no documentation, a lot of "hmmmmm"s to try to insinuate something, but the reader can't be sure. We told our library not to purchase any of this title. We asked them to spend the resources wisely, i.e., forget this one!!

At the time this book was published, it was 100% accurate. It was published during the first term of William the Impeached. This book is a joke.

That's not meant in a derogative sense, that's meant literally. It's completely blank inside.

It might make a briefly humorous gag gift, but really it's one of those books that's most notable for simply existing, to be used as an amusing tidbit at parties or water cooler talk.

A Complex New Yorker, Erie Canal and Historical Ironies
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-23
Evan Cornog has crafted an expert depiction and analysis of the life of DeWitt Clinton: the early nineteenth century mayor of New York City, governor of New York State and champion of the Erie Canal. Cornog puts this man in historical perspective; he ruled at the twilight of the age of elite, privileged politicians and the dawn of the age of popular democratic mass politics. Ironically, Clinton, the quintessential product of the former political age, helped usher in the latter by championing election reform, public education and the canal itself.

The historical ironies of the canal expressed by Cornog are insightful. Clinton was a proponent of federal funding for internal improvements yet the success of the canal as a state subsidized project discouraged massive federal public works projects for more than a century. Its success also led to a certain canal-building fever for other states. But later canal construction came when private railroads were gaining steam. This untimely investment, coupled with the Panic of 1837 actually frightened off and discouraged future state, federal and foreign investment in internal improvements.

A final unforseen result for Clinton was the social transformation which flowed quickly from the canal and led to the end of the elite age of New York politics.

The most important New Yorker

Review Date: 2004-07-13
DeWitt Clinton's accomplishments have long been trumpeted in New York City and State, and for too long his canal has been perceived as a local triumph. Thanks to Evan Cornog's study, "The Birth of Empire: DeWitt Clinton and the American Experience, 1769-1828" the many triumphs of Clinton's career are given the national and historic scope they deserve.

NOTE: This is a study of Clinton's contributions to New York's and America's emergence as a world power, especially in terms of an economic power. This is NOT a biography in the ordinary sense of the word. Unlike McCullough's "John Adams" or Chernow's "Alexander Hamiltion", we do not get a full-length portrait of the man. Partly because DeWitt Clinton was much more reserved and reluctant to show his feelings than others of his time and partly because his diary entries, as Cornog points out, are very mundane, we mostly see the public DeWitt Clinton: DeWitt Clinton the politician, DeWitt Clinton the scientist, DeWitt Clinton the philanthropist, etc. So intensely private in some ways (his mother wondered if he was dead or alive because he never wrote her while he attended Columbia), it is remarkable that he would seek such a public career.

But it was to New York's and America's benefit that he did.

Although he never achieved the Presidency, he often influenced (directly or indirectly) every President in office during his lifetime. He clashed with some of the mightiest men of his day: Aaron Burr, Daniel Tompkins, Ambrose Spencer, et al. As Cornog points out, not all his confrontations were rooted in ideology; DeWitt Clinton was a political animal, even though the political realm he operated in was rapidly changing, often leaving Clinton behind. Clinton also could often be extremely self-centered, snobbish and vindictive. And, yet, this contradictory man also had long-reaching visions and programs for the benefit of the poor as well as the merchant and upper classes. He supported free education for all New Yorkers. He supported artists, writers, and scientists. Most importantly, his dogged determination to get the Erie Canal built provided jobs for immigrants, provided a market for farmers, provided work for New Englanders, and helped build the great cities along the canal's path. And as the canal propelled New York State and New York City into economic powerhouses, it also propelled America's westward expansion and its status as a world-class nation.

Well-written and well-documented, Evan Cornog's "The Birth of Empire" captures the feel of the early decades of America, with all its growing pains. And it puts DeWitt Clinton in American history's spotlight where he belongs.

Dr. Paul Lowinger is a distinguished psychoanalyst. Here he follows in the footsteps of Sigmund Freud who did
"psychohistories" of Moses and daVinci. He tackles the Clintons. The book will be of special interest to anyone interested in psychoanalysis and/or the sex lives of the Clintons. Not all analysts will agree with Dr. Lowinger's surmises. However,now that he has done his treatment it's unlikely anyone else will focus on the Clintons again soon. But now that they have been done, can a psychohistory of the Bush clan be far behind? Will we learn that we invaded Iraq because of W's unconscious oedipal urges? At least when Clinton lied, no one died. Readers interested in a modern, non-Freudian view of the psychological issues of love and power may wish to see "A General Theory of Love," by Drs. Thomas Lewis, Fari Amini, and Richard Lannon.

An objective and well-researched psychoanalysis of Bill Clinton. I appreciated Lowinger's clear explanations of psychoanalytical jargon, which made the book accessible and lively.
While experts may not agree with all of Lowinger's conclusions, I think he presents well-reasoned, believable arguments about Bill Clinton's psyche based on publicly available information and his own expertise as a psychoanalyst.
I assume author and subject have never met and that Lowinger has made some assumptions that cannot be proved. But I think he makes this clear throughout, often using words like "may" and "points to" rather than flat assertions.
In this enjoyable and fascinating portrayal, Clinton comes across as an Everyman who still struggles to overcome the deficits of his early life, yet one who has achieved a great deal in spite of his difficulties and demons.

Paul Lowinger is a physician, author, teacher and an extraordinary psychiatrist. (He taught me all that I know about psychiatry). His training is a rare combination of psychoanalysis with an eclectic and humane focus. In this book, Dr. Lowinger examines in great detail the events in the lives of the three Clintons - Chelsea, Hillary and Bill, and interprets these in the light of psychoanalytic principles - a sort of 'psychopathology of everyday life'. The result is a richly erudite psychohistory of this important family, flavored with gentle touches of humor. I like the book very much because it bustles with objectivity, relieving the reader of any tendency to allow preconceived biases to color their reading enjoyment.

This is the only book I know that features cartoonists from the U.S., Canada, Sweeden and India. Many are syndicated and one is a Pulitizer Prize winner.

It is a virtual history of Clinton's scandal-ridden presidency that also includes Al Gore, Hillary, Monica Lewinsky, Paula Jones, and Ken Starr.

There are multiple Quotations from several prominent Democrats, a past President, Mikhail Gorbachev and many best selling authors.

The Introduction thoroughly explains the word 'Thief' in the Title.

Anyone that has followed the presidency of William Jefferson Clinton will be able to remember the event portrayed in the cartoons by their creator.

Most Liberals and Clinton apologists will not welcome a book of this nature that exposes their president's immoral conduct while in office.

If Republicans Had Any Hearts: They'd Be Democrats

and

The Spiritual Teachings & Biography of Master Krishna Venta: with Biography

Here is a brief summary of the contents of this book.

* Three Mass Murders
I grew up in a religious cult, which just happened to be involved in three mass murders. I will tell the world, for the first time, how these events were connected, and the real causes for so many deaths. My adult life started when I was a 16 year old preacher, teaching the Gospel to Charles Manson in 1968. You will learn about the insanity of our religion in this and my other book. I feel that it is critical for you to understand the minds and motivation of the leaders involved in these murders. We have another cult leader on the horizon, and he wants to be in command of thousands of nuclear weapons and trillions of dollars in cash. For too many politicians, it's always been about power and money, and don't you ever forget that fact of life.

* Barack Obama and Socialism
It is a bit upsetting to see someone hijack the Democratic Party, especially if they are die-hard Socialists. These days we call them Populists and Progressives, but back in the 1950s we just called them commies. What upsets me the most is the constant reference to the word Change, which has always meant zilch. The few solid examples of Change that I can find at the Obama website, and in the speeches, are way out of touch with the real world, and very dangerous. In this book you will learn a lot about Socialism and the Changes that Obama wants to make in your life. `Yes we can' stop this mob politics. And would you believe that I am a true liberal? Honest folks, I really do freak out at Republicans and ultra conservatives. So you may want to listen up when I tell you that Barack Obama is `right' of the Bush gang. Conservatives are control freaks, and Barack is one massive Socialist control freak. This is not an issue of race, and so throughout this book I ask you:

What would Colin Powell or Bill Cosby do?

* Immigration, Racism and Jobs
It is impossible to discuss jobs for the poor without also discussing racism and immigration. Employment for everyone is a complex problem, but the solutions are simple if we have the commitment that JFK spoke of in his inaugural address. My life experiences are extremely varied, and so I am one of the few people in this country that can actually look into my own past to understand every level of wealth, every level of culture, and every dream that we have. Many of these problems that politicians focus on are easily solved if we are all employed in jobs that we want, and not jobs that we have to settle for. So I really freak out at the proposals from the Socialist candidate for President who insists on giving you a make-work job that sucks. It doesn't get any dumber than this.

* Foreign Policy
One rather obvious subject in this book will be The Iraq War; or "How to use a compass when attacking the real enemy." I love it when people talk about Islam, and they don't even know that the Koran / Quran reads from back to front. Sadly enough, politicians don't understand that this war is not about religion. OK, so I do have the advantage of living in Saudi Arabia for a while, and I have actually read the Koran. This chapter will scare the socks off of you, and I would also say that Americans `better wake up and get it'. Then I will show you how to bring a permanent peace to the Middle East by hiring American Indians as forest rangers in California. I kid you not.

* Crime and Punishment
Crime and punishment are always hot topics during an election year, and as a victim of three gang attacks in just 5 weeks, I can assure you that I have some things to say about our sick cities. We will get into drugs (but not inhale), guns (but not shoot anyone), punishment (but no S&M, sorry Ann) and a few other issues. Spend a month in Ireland and you will think that the USA is some kind of psychotic nightmare dreamed up by Dean Koontz or Stephen King. Ann Coulter wants everyone to pack a gun, but lover boy Jon just wants to pack Ann in my suitcase as I head out to some paradise island.

* Education
California is cutting back on funding for schools, and Obama isn't helping to solve these problems with his bizarre ideas on education. Veterans are probably going to get a return of the benefits that Reagan revoked, so we will see how that may impact the colleges. We will look at education in America; and how to avoid the total disintegration of our society. You are what you learn, and society becomes what we teach. And from the nightmares that I see every day in the cities, our education system is a total failure, with a few exceptions.

* Environment
With energy prices out of control, the push is going to be extreme to compromise on the environment, and as usual the politicians are arguing about "How to solve the wrong problems with the wrong solutions". I have to wonder how a person like Al Gore can earn a Nobel Prize by just bitching. My ex-wife should have 5 of those prizes by now. I will tell you how to save the environment instead of just bitching about it. And in the process we will cut down more trees and waste more water than ever before. For real! Then I can get some sleep at night, knowing that global cooling is on the way.

* Health Care
Health care is the most wonderful service in the USA, but for some reason we have made it the most aggravating problem in our history. I have worked for a few of the big health insurance companies, and the complexities of the computer systems are unreal. I guess this is where my analytical mind takes over, because the solution is as simple as using a thermometer. And the section on Veterans will really blow your mind, and take the shirt off your back. I will stun you with information you have never heard, and you will truly understand the danger of messing with Veterans. Remember this always; people join the military with one thing in mind, how soon can I get the hell out. They also worry about how they will spend the rest of their lives if military service cripples their mind and/or body. And then the next thought is; what benefits do I get on my release?

* American Wealth
This chapter is all about American Wealth, Health, Opportunities and Poverty (AWHOP), and it is a whopper. I hope that you get some ideas about your own life, and your future. Poverty in America and around the world is always a hot topic, and as you would expect, the political candidates don't have a clue. In this chapter I will shock you to the core of your panties; and you will be royally pissed off at your candidate's total ignorance of what poverty is, and how to cure it. And wait till you read about a housing project that gives $300,000 homes to lazy bums who refuse to work.

* Technology
This chapter has some funky ideas not covered elsewhere in the book. Most of the hot topics, like `green jobs' were chosen by the political candidates. I will update the chapter online as I have time, so that by November 2008 you will have some pretty solid ideas about what you want from your government. I mean really folks; who really cares what the candidates want? It's our country, or so my history teacher tells me.

* Segregation
If we look at the ways in which we form little groups in our society, we may be able to see a positive, creative and constructive application of the concept of segregation. All of our lives can be enriched by doing `our own thing' instead of dumping all of our cultures into a melting pot. We have this weird reverence for American Indian customs, and yet we insist that African Americans melt into our European culture, or that we melt into theirs. And we start this chapter by learning how to dance.

* Ann Coulter
This book is a response to Ann and her very strange tirades against liberals and the Democratic Party. But it is also a response to `hate preachers', Socialists, political fools and lots of other people; none of whom I hate. They all have some good in them, and some have less good than others. So I picked out some prevalent topics from Ann's writings, and I hope that you get a chance to think about how you feel on these subjects.

* Brother Jon's Biography
This chapter discusses the events in my childhood, and gives you some clues about cult life. I really didn't want to go into this in detail, because what is past is done. But now we have the same cults doing the same things, and the kids are the real victims. Hopefully you can learn something from what I experienced.

* Children of the Fountain
Religion and child abuse come up in the news over and over again, yet we fail to take action because of some bizarre obsession with the `rights' of parents to destroy a child's life. Maybe this chapter will change your mind about the `rights' of religious nuts.

* Pimp for President
Both Thomas Jefferson and John Kennedy clearly stated that the Democratic Party represented people who would prefer to stand on their own two feet. They demanded that the government minimize any involvement in our lives. And here we are in a welfare bidding war, looking to buy the votes of Americans. In this chapter I get downright nasty, and I call those who would sell their vote `whores', and those who would give us money for our votes, `pimps'. And if the shoe fits, wear it. The shoes are made in China anyway.

According to Joe Fried in Democrats and Republicans - Rhetoric and Reality: Comparing the Voters in Statistics and Anecdotes charities would get an additional $56 Billion per year if Democrats gave as much in proportion to their incomes as Republicans give. Nuf said!

This is a review of two books, written as a pair:

If Republicans Had Any Hearts: They'd Be Democrats

and

The Spiritual Teachings & Biography of Master Krishna Venta: with Biography

Here is a brief summary of the contents of this book. You can put it back on the shelf if you are not interested in these topics:

* Three Mass Murders

* Barack Obama and Socialism

* Immigration, Racism and Jobs

* Foreign Policy

* Crime and Punishment

* Education

* Environment

* Health Care
Health care is the most wonderful service in the USA, but for some reason we have made it the most aggravating problem in our history. I have worked for a few of the big health insurance companies, and the complexities of the computer systems are unreal. As sick as I was of the impeachment trial, I found Huston's "sociologist spin" offered a new perspective. Namely, how could so many smart people get into such an incredibly stupid mess? Getting theoretically inside the heads of the main players made diving back into the topic worthwhile. Impeachment Trial Diary is destined to be the definitive work on a ridiculous episode in this nation's history.

Different from Posner's "An Affair of State" this account is a more casual and personalized view of the Clinton-Lewinsky affair that spotlights the impeachment trial as it unravels day by day and does not focus on the entire "Year of the Monica." An entertaining and often amusing read by a retired City University of New York academic, and a modern-day Samuel Pepys.

A bright and bitingly funny diary of the impeachment circus.

Huston is intelligent and witty as the ultimate outsider, sharing his thoughts as the trial unfolds on his TV screen. His streaming commentary often reads is like Mystery Science Theatre script as he lampoons the central figures -- from Monica ( the "groupie who wasn't clear on the concept. Hung around after she scored... not one to cower behind the door when the chutzpah was passed out") to Lindsay Graham ("...who comes across as a polite earnest young man...used to passing the time of day with old ladies sitting on porches sipping lemonade...coddled since birth by adoring parents and aunts and uncles and cousins, all of whom have agreed that this boy is wonderful.") to Ken "the doughboy" Starr. Even the media types covering the trial don't escape his acerbic gaze - witness "Nina Totenberg (not a lawyer, but unlike Cokie (Roberts), seems to play one on TV." A must read for those looking to find humor in a very sad situation.
