Powerful and emotional - Beautifully WrittenReview Date: 2008-07-17
For a beautiful and unusual change of pace, the story is told in sonnets which are read by 2 actors (male & female). Their voices and the way they emote make it easy to understand the story, even if you haven't read any poetry since high school like me. In fact, the sonnets make the story even more powerful and the author really understands, and shares with us, the beauty of language. It's almost like listening to music. And it comes with printed text, so you can read along.
The images were strong and descriptive, the themes made me really think about passion, love, war and relationships. I truly felt for the main characters, especially the children, as the story unfolded. I thought it was really a very moving and unique "read."

A fascinating and intriguing look at life in an Amish communityReview Date: 2005-12-16
Still, the outside world seems remote until a rash of fires break out on Amish property. For the first time, Simeon feels less than safe at home. That doesn't stop him from going out late one night to check on Lena A. --- and catching two men in the act of setting fire to the family barn. "You better forget that you ever knew anyone was here, because if you don't, we'll be back, and we'll burn your house down."
How can Simeon protect the family he loves? Reporting the two men to the fire marshal would only put his family in danger. Can he solve the mystery on his own? Only by growing up and learning to deal with his emotions and responsibilities can Simeon determine the right course of action.
In SIMEON'S FIRE, Cathryn Clinton presents a compelling story about one boy growing up Amish in a rural community in Pennsylvania. Filled with rich and satisfying detail, it is an opportunity to peer into another, different world. Both Simeon's questioning and his dilemma are believable, and he and his father in particular are compelling characters. Clinton portrays the Amish in a positive and even fascinating light, and leaves the reader wanting to know more about the community and their values.

What a Read!!Review Date: 2001-06-25
The Starr Report is very well written- despite its overly detailed accounts of the most intimate moments between Clinton and Monica Lewinsky. The attention to detail given the report by Ken Starr and his investigative team is commendable. It takes a lot of patience, intelligence and experience to produce that kind of work. Everything flows well and ties into everything else. It is a perfectionistic dream. The footnote sections of the report would garner a perfect evaluation from the most demanding English professor.
The report also goes a long way toward setting a tone for the reader. You feel like you are right there, in Washington DC, listening in on the conversations of the most powerful people in the nation. A reprieve from normal reality, you might say.
Bottom Line: This report/book is not for everyone and it DOES push the envelope as far as disclosure of intimate sexual acts are concerned, but go ahead and read it (guilt-free) if you want to.

To learn the value of freedom, study the historical cases where it was subvertedReview Date: 2008-06-15
The Cherokees fought back using the American federal judicial system and the case went all the way to the United States Supreme Court. When the court under Justice John Marshall ruled that the Federal Government must protect Cherokee property rights, President Jackson's response was, "John Marshall has rendered his decision; now let him enforce it." He then ordered the forcible removal of the Cherokees from their ancestral home in Georgia to the "Indian Territory" of Oklahoma. Allowed little time to prepare and forced to walk, approximately one-fourth of the Cherokees died on the journey. This journey has gone down in history as the "trail of tears."
This book is an excellent explanation of the forcible relocation of the Cherokees, how they tried to cohabitate with the whites, adopting much of the European culture and social traditions. However, nothing could change their racial structure or the insatiable desire of the Europeans for land, gold and their firm beliefs that the Native Americans were less than human. It will always be a sad example of what can go wrong in the United States and every child should be exposed to this event. This book should be required reading in elementary school history classes. It is an element of the "Cornerstones of Freedom" series and you understand the value of freedom by studying the times when it was devalued.
