Great book. I've got about 6 MFC / C++ Windows programming books and very few tell you what you want to know. This book covers a lot in a logical manner.

An excellent book for student teachers

I read this book as an assignment for a graduate course in curriculum. The topic sounded interesting, but the author opened my eyes to a whole new issue that I never really considered. You will be moved in reading the stories of these foreign-born children who have been recently placed into US American public schools. Problems arise in the making of friends, understanding what the teacher says, reading and writing in a new language, learning the "American way", and adjusting to a completely different school system. The book flowed nicely and offered a new perspective on how teachers, ESL instructors, principles, other students, and parents view this process of acculturation. I really recommend this book to any beginning teachers, and to those who have increasing diversity in their classrooms. I loved it!

Mainstream teachers face particular challenges when newly arrived ESL students enter their classrooms. Some of these challenges stem from linguistic barriers, but others are cultural issues so endemic that neither the teacher nor the student is fully aware of their impact.

Your Land, My Land is the story of four children's acculturation into elementary school, as seen by the author, the teachers, the parents, and the children. Clayton focuses on two primary questions: Is there some kind of underlying pattern of acculturation that the four students share? What is the role of the school and the classroom teacher in the process?

Your Land, My Land is a valuable resource for any teacher or administrator with students from diverse cultures. It sheds new light on the cultural adjustment these students must make, on the values teachers hold and students bring, and on theoretical and practical ways to reach across cultures.

A "Gift" of Enlightenment and Fond Memories

This book caused me to pause and think about my life as a grandchild, child and parent and what I have learned and shared along the way with my grandparents, parents and children.

The author, Mr. Clayton, presented the material in a very straight forward manner with references to people in his life and how these people have impacted his direction in life, and what he shared with his children and other adults. I was impressed and totally agree with Mr. Clayton's selection of the "Gifts" to share and to instill within the family. I must thank Mr. Clayton for taking the time to sit down and write this book. It is simple and practical advice "to Appreciate" for anyone who falls into the category of being a "child" no matter what your age is!

During and after each chapter, I had to reminisce about similar or unique events in my own life as well as the emotions that I experienced with these events. I am sure that all readers will experience the same thing. Thus, I advise you to have some tissue and/or a partner handy to discuss the "10 Gifts."

As I read the book, I thought of several colleagues who would enjoy the book. I have now loaned the book out to them and I look forward to our follow-on discussions.

Phabulous reading!

My favorite baseball team of all time is the Philadelphia Phillies and when I was given the opportunity to review this book there was no way I was passing it up. Filled with the 50 of the greatest players ever to wear the Phillies pinstripes.

From Grover Cleveland Alexander to Richie Ashburn to Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton to Curt Schilling, Lenny Dykstra and Darren Daulton and 43 others you'll be treated to some of the best stories about these players.

Each chapter is about 1 of the 50 players and at the end of each chapter is the statistics while they played in Philadelphia. The list is slightly incomplete, missing greats like Billy Hamilton and Ed Delahanty, but overall the selections are excellent.

One for my personal library, which is grown to over 300 books, this book will be shred with my children and friends for many years to come. There isn't enough words to express my how impressed I am with this book.

The Conversion of Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Ralph Clingan's book illuminates important dimensions of Dietrich Bonhoeffer's conversion, which he attributed to the six months he attended Clayton Powell's Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem. This is the most important theological work of the past fifty years. I based my Reformation Day Sermon on the book. It reads like a conversation, very readable, if compressed. I want to see more detailed treatments of some of Powell's sources than allowed in this small volume.

From Planeta Journal - This wonderful book provides a much-needed overview of travel that enriches the soul. The diversity of "alternative" travel is as broad as the interests that propel travelers to leave the comforts of home. Chapters cover independent travel, special interest vacations, senior travel, family travel, disability travel, adult study, student overseas programs and living abroad. This volume synthesizes the most practical information for making the most of traveling abroad. This is an excellent resource.

After visiting the Royal Collection on two occassions I wanted a good reference book. This is the best on the market! The profusely detailed colored photos throughout are nothing less than superior quality. The history of each painting is explained and a lot of information about the artist, their life, and style is also discussed in great detail. This is NOT a small book. It has proven to be invaluable in researching various art works. If you cannot make a trip to visit the italian paintings of Royal Collection in person, this book is mandated. I can honestly say, this book is a masterpiece.

Read this book almosts a decade ago, and still remember it vividly. Life in a small and very emphatically segregated Southern town just before WW II (but it might as well be 1890). C. Eric Lincoln is an academic type, and his knowledge of Black history informs the book without turning into a textbook.
