Elizabeth Leighton has just regained consciousness, only to learn that whoever assaulted her also murdered her dear stepmother Helen Northrup, Lady Carvey. Accused of the ghastly crime is Lord Roarke, the man she has quietly adored for so long. Convinced he was framed, Elizabeth turns to her extraordinary gift - the ability to know the past, future, and thoughts of those around her through her drawings. But the sketches tell a disturbing tale.

Roarke doesn't know how long he can tolerate the tantalizing presence of Elizabeth, once simply an agreeable companion, and now, the lady of his dreams. How can he declare his love when the ton suspects him of such an evil deed? He must clear his name if he ever wishes to propose to her. Now, with Roarke's desperate quest for justice and Elizabeth's stubborn pursuit of the truth, they will come together to capture a killer - and each other's hearts.

Elizabeth Leighton regained consciousness after four months. She learned her stepmother had been murdered and the man Elizabeth loved had been found passed out drunk on the bed beside her. Elizabeth apparently had come upon the scene and was assaulted.

Elizabeth uses her extraordinary gift, of being able to draw the past and the thoughts of others, to hunt for the real murderer.

***Alana Clayton used her writing talent to create a wonderful "who-dunnit" tale set during the Regency time with a large cast of characters to cloud the reader's judgement. I loved it.***

A step into the mind of the early church.

Imagine you could go back in time and step into Nauvoo, the trip across the plains, and early settlement of what is now Utah. This is the book. William Clayton was a personal scribe to Joseph Smith. He was converted in England, sailed accross the Atlantic, and almost instantly became an insider, and confidant to Joseph Smith once he arrived in Nauvoo.

He is very detailed in his journal, yet it almost reads like a story. The highlights include: Doing missionary work with some of the early church leaders including Brigham Young in England. His trip to America is tragic, with sickness and disease killing some of the passengers. The mormon voyagers join in "faith" with the belief they can "hold on" to those who are dying if they just can believe strong enough... they end up dissappointed. You get a real sense of the stength of their belief and the conviction of those willing to leave England for Zion. Upon arriving in Nauvoo he describes his conversations with Joseph Smith. He alludes to his early introduction to polygamy, when most in the church did not know it was being practiced. He marries a number of wives, and mentions many of Joseph's plural marraiges. The political issues facing the Saints are discussed, as well as the efforts to go West. He describes the sacrifice in preparing the Nauvoo temple, and has a month or more dedicated to describing the endowment of the Saints before leaving West. He gives a description of the organization of the pioneers when going west, and his own journey accross the plains. What I found very funny was the popularity of the mormon band as they travelled. Cities would pay the Mormon band (of which Clayton was a member) to play for them, and this helped fund the trip. I would recommend the book to anyone who wants to delve into the details of the early church practice and belief. What is so fun about history is seeing the world through someone else's eyes. His life was great and I really enjoyed the book.

Clayton was the Prophet's meticulous secretary and confidant. Reading this book has given me fresh new insight into the ingenious mind of Joseph Smith as well as to the very turbulent times of the Saints during the 1840's in Nauvoo. Furthermore, Clayton documents early missionary work in Lancashire, England and the difficult voyage across to America with newly converted Latter Day saint families. It's very interesting reading and surely an important reference book for any Mormon History scholar.

Maggie Bloom is Back!

I recently visited Hilton Head, South Carolina as I do every year and was THRILLED to discover this third book in the Maggie Bloom mystery series. Maggie Bloom and her dogs are as wonderful and wacky as ever. The supporting cast of characters is charming, colorful and have that signature quirkiness I love so much in Linda Clayton's books.

Maggie's propensity to meddle gets her into hilarious situations that actually had me laughing out loud now and then - much to the amusement of the people around me on the beach!

I was fortunate enough to meet the author last year in Hilton Head and was eager to compliment her on this book this summer as well. I was told, however, she was not in town while I was there but she did have a new website for contact and book information.

I can't wait for book #4!

I was so excited that a new installment of Maggie Bloom's adventures was in print. Just Buried did not disappoint! Linda Clayton has the unique ability to weave a good, sound whodunit with a humorous story. Her characters are vivid and amusing. Maggie Bloom's desire to solve a mystery is exceeded only by her appreciation of a good meal - and the companionship of her dogs (and occassionally, her fiance). Even Maggie's spaniel, Wally, consistantly provides chuckles to the reader.

The problem I have had with all three books is that I enjoy them so much that I read them too quickly. I hope that next book in the series is coming out soon. I have an entire shelf reserved for the Maggie Bloom mysteries; I predict this to be a very successful series.

Margin Calls--No Disasters!

Review Date: 2006-03-10
A compelling combination of family and personal anecdote and judicial intrigue, Margin Calls and Other Disasters demonstrates the ability of nonfiction to successfully incorporate the elements of effective narration and fictional storytelling. The story of a small, private business entrepreneur and stock market enthusiast, Margin Calls takes us literally around the world, from France and Italy, to Canton, OH, where the author, Clayton B. Smith, has, for the last several years, fought the "good fight" in the local, state, and federal courts against a criminal conviction for bad checks. Mr. Smith, a hot dog vendor, has, Don Quixote-style, represented himself Pro Se, and taken his battle to the Ohio Supreme Court. This book, which exposes the politiczed nature of the Court system, is seasoned with wry humor. His stories, from growing up in a military family, to his on-going feud with a self-proclaimed "Pit Bull" Stark County lawyer, are highly entertaining; the books's local cops, FBI agents, prosecutors, private lawyers, judges, and Mafia loan sharks are as colorful as characters in a John Grisham novel. In addition, Mr. Smith consistently employs a style and tone that create an instant rapport with his readers, and narrates his fascinating story with agreeable pace, detail, and insight. Because the aforementioned Supreme Court decision is still pending, we can no doubt look forward to a second book by Mr. Smith, who, because of his Dickens-like life, will probably never run out of stories to tell--and that is indeed wonderful news for all of us.

Good read! Difficult to put it down.

I enjoyed reading this book immensely. It has all the elements that make a story interesting. The author immediately connects and bonds with the reader through sharing of childhood experiences. Who hasn't suffered their own fair share of indignities while growing up, whether those indignities were caused by bullies, prima donnas, or class mate peer pressure.

A surprising abundance of humor throughout the book keeps the story fast moving, light hearted, and enjoyable. I know I had to laugh aloud probably 40 or 50 times. Strangely enough the real thread of the book is one of seriousness. In many ways the story is really a very sad one! The humor is delicately counter-balanced by some passages that are extemely emotional in nature, passages that caused me to be more than a little choked up, again caused by feeling of having "been there, done that."

I'd recommend this book to anyone who has ever had to suffer through the inequities of our court and judicial and legal system. Reader will feel at least some sense of healing, knowing that someone else has suffered and shared similar indignities brought about by not being fully and properly represented during their "day in court".

Great book!

This book was published in 1993 and concerns a sequence of events in a California high school in 1988. What can a book published in 1993 about 1988 tell us in the new millennium about a disease like AIDS? Lots. This very entertaining book, written completely in rivetting dialogue as a transcript of a tape recording between a high school boy and a high school girl, is full of so much. It has these two kids pitted against their school and their community in a struggle to find a voice of their own through their school newspaper. It gives a streetwise talk about AIDS, how young people contact the disease, the history of treatment for the disease and a projection for the future course of the disease. It presents the frank truth about a government and society who stuck their heads in the sand while the disease blossomed and rampaged through our community. These kids are real. They talk like real kids, not like mouthpieces. They fall in love and (gasp) have sex. They're lovable and funny, and their story is gripping from beginning to end. Don't be fooled by the publication date of this novel. It is right up to date with many issues that involve young people today. Looking for a way to talk to kids about sex, so that they can be educated about both the dangers and the joys which lie ahead of them in the new millennium? Give them THE MAYDAY RAMPAGE and watch them enjoy and learn.

As a semi-retired attorney, I know Michael Clayton. He fixes problems created by attorneys and clients of a large law firm. Attorneys come with all mortal and moral flaws plus some never dreamed of by those not within the legal profession. The role of Karen, the female corporate defense attorney, is so perfectly written as to describe any number of women who have risen to the top of the profession. There are many Karens in the legal field. I did not expect to enjoy the movie, but I truly did. Normally I hate to watch movies about lawyers because they are either poorly written or bring back sad memories. I want to grab the script writer and shake him or her and say, "That is not the way it is done, you idiot!" That is not true of this script.

As a history professor for twenty years I always required students on my England and Austria overseas summer semesters to purchase the appropriate Michelin Green Guide in order to learn the basic history and cultural specialties of the cities we lived in and visited. The guides pack a great deal of accurate detail and good maps into a reasonably small format that is easy to carry in a backpack or tote and is priced well for students and the general tourist.

This course was designed with US goverment support by a group of Russian Professors for around the USA. It was created during the cold war, so the USSR government terms are outdated. (Having visited Russia and being interested in history, the terms were useful to me.)

Modern Russian 1 and 2 has over 48 hours of audio. If you are wanting to learn Russian on your own, all the audio is a great help.

The program with work will teach you Russian.

This is the combo package of book and 24 audiocassettes for Modern Russian 1 (equivalent to an intensive first-year university Russian course meeting three to five hours per week). Developed by the Geogetown University School of Languages and Linguistics, and marketed by Audio-Forum, this is a comprehensive first-year course.

With an emphasis on the modern spoken language, the 18 lessons contained in Modern Russian 1 present a total vocabulary of approx. 2700 items. The course is founded on the principle that fluency in a foreign language is acquired less by intellectual analysis than by intensive practice. The student using this book does not memorize rules and paradgims constantly but imitates and repeats basic language patterns through drills.

Each lesson is structured in this way: (1) preparation for conversation: the words, phrases and idioms used in the conversation are explained; (2) the conversation: a dialogue illustrating not only the words & phrases but incorporating cultural information; (3) grammar & structure; (4) drills & exercises.

The voices on the audiocassettes include several different people, both male and female, speaking in a really clear, superbly crisp, native accent.

A really fine course, whether for self-study or classroom use.
