This book is awful. I am currently taking a Cell Biology class at Johns Hopkins and we are required to use this book. It is dry, uninteresting, and presents information in a very unorganized fashion. The book repeats itself many times. Also, the text often refers to figures that are on different pages in the book, requiring you to shuffle around through the pages looking for examples. The way the book presents important information is not effective, because most of the important stuff gets diluted with unimportant facts.

This book might have its uses as a reference, but will not help you learn the concepts very well. I do not recommend this book.

I used this book in an undergraduate Cell and Molecular Biology course in the University of Puerto Rico. It is an excellent book because it presents a lot of information as well as a lot of different examples that support that information. It is full of diagrams, pictures and tables that helped me understood all the key concepts.

A Necessary Resource

Any biology student or aficionado will find that this book is one of his or her most valuable guides and resources. The text is clearly-written and very up-to-date, and the rich illustrations, diagrams, and charts that accompany it are truly second-to-none. Even if you don't need it for a class, find a copy and browse - chances are you'll like it enough to consider buying it for your own reference.

I found this on Mensa's best books list and so ordered it through this site. It only took a few days and since it arrived I have very much enjoyed working my way through the puzzles. They're solvable but some of them still need a bit of thought. And looking at the ones at the end (which I've yet to reach), some of those jobs around the house are gonna have to wait a while!

A "must read" for anyone interested in the Civil War in general, and the Civil War in the Ozarks region in particular. I especially liked Steele's writing style. Steele has a talent for delivering a lot of historical information while keeping the reader turning the pages wanting to know more. A very good book!

This book is designed for the average guy or gal off the street (from high school age to adult)to learn the bare basics about Ozarks Civil War heritage. Elite scholars may find it too simple, but hey... history belongs to all our citizens, not just professors and other professionals.

Recommend your read this one and recommend you add it to your collection. This work covers aspects of the Civil War often times overlooked. I is a wonderful starting place for a study of the War in this part of the country. Needless to say, it does need to be supplemented with further reading, but it is certainly a good start. Highly recommend

sophisticated analysis of a complex period
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-05
I am a medieval economic historian and I have found that Duby's interpretation of this period is one of careful scholarship in primary sources and a sophistication of outlook which transcends some of the sterility of the historiography of this period, particularly the debate over the Pirenne Thesis.

If you want to begin to understand the economic history of this period and also would like to know where to start in looking deeper, I can recommend no better book than Duby's.

Ground-breaking, but outdated
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-21
Duby's work was ground-breaking in the 1960s, but has now become outdated. That is not to say that his arguments and analyses have proven wrong or been supersceded. It is outdated simply because it has been incorporated into much more detailed and comprehensive accounts written in the last thirty years (particularly by Norman Pounds).

That does not mean that this book is not worth reading. Duby's piece still provides a unique perspective. Although the work as a whole has been incorporated into much bigger books, no one has focused on the same characteristics that he has. Duby writes wonderfully on the gift and plunder economy, the importance of the medieval world-view to economic growth, and the change in technology. Duby's work is most valuable, however, for the image it creates. Duby follows in the French tradition of writing "impressionist histories." In this way Duby gives an excellent idea of what it was like to live in the early medieval period. In many ways The Early Growth of the European Economy is the perfect companion to Marc Bloch's Feudal Society.

This book is still worth reading because of the focus it has and the impression it gives. At under three hundred pages, it is a quick read, and provides an excellent introduction to the topic.

Medieval Gift Economy

Review Date: 2001-09-05
Includes an excellent section on the medieval gift economy, something which many authors have relegated to anthropology of the developing world. He is one of the few to show the pattern of looting and giving--to knights, to God, to King--that solidified social relations and acted as the road to power in the old social order.

An old and archaïc book
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-23
Written in the sixties, this book wants to show how the middle age was dark, poor and uncivilized. Duby writes well, but his feeling about this period empeaches him to be honnest and to see the quality of certain things, like carolingian administration for instance. Duby wrote this essay to show how dark was the society before the 13th century, before "le temps des cathedrales" on which he did a better work...

A great work

Review Date: 1999-12-16
This is without doubt one of the best history books written in the twentieth century. A work of great depth and breadth, it shows a master historian at his best. The analysis is rich and complex; just about every page is rich with insight and often turns upside down some old conventional wisdom (cf., for but one example, his assessement of the positive role the Vikings had on the redistribution of wealth and on economic quickening in general in Europe). This is a veritable tour de force, and one that should be required reading for anyone seriously interested in medieval history. Of course, some material is dated, and on some topics the author changed his mind later on in his career, but that does not detract from the force and brilliance of this classic.

This is one of the finest books on E&M. Uses SI units, ... units cause much confusion in E&M, this book was one of the first to use SI units. As most introductory Calculus based courses now use SI units this is a good second course. Very good example using the "method of images," a topic that confused me my first time through. I had a Physics prof. that gave me good advice at this point, ... I am a good, not a gifted science student, my prof. had the modesty to tell me to move on, ... "nobody understands Physics with one reading, ... or even two, sometimes it takes years, or even a lifetime."
This book reads well and treats a few difficult topics with the simplest examples possible. You need only basic calculus and desire, and possibly more than one reading. I stick this book in my back pocket, just in case a little insight comes my way.

The books by Slater (one of the great professors at MIT) are known by the low sophistication of formalism combined with a deep physical insight, apparent in the way problems are solved, using analogies, clever simplifications, numerical estimates, etc. It's physics, Fermi style. Though the theory is very sound, it is in the problems that the book excells. If you work through them, you're done with electromagnetism, and you'll love it forever.

A very good SECOND book on EM

Review Date: 2000-01-25
This is a very good book to follow the study of, say, Haliday. Slater was, in writing it, worried about teaching methods of theoretical physics, as well as of electromagnetism. The text is brief and to the point, with the elegance typical of the master Slater was. Maybe the strongest point, however, are the exercises. These are the best you will find in any book on EM.

Excellent text on Electromagnetism!

This book is worth buying for two good reasons 1) its an excellent treatment of extremely important concepts of electricity, magnetism and interaction of light with matter and 2) because its very affordable and very readable. Its good read for physicists, and its more than useful for material and / or polymer scientists, who use light as a tool to investigate properties of matter. Basic concepts are explained quite well here, and like many other Dover texts, it is terse, cheap and yet masterful.

if you're not a Ph.D., don't even bother.

As any Early Bronco lover knows, it can be difficult to find information on the vehicle. The 4x4 Performance Portfolio is a compilation of articles and advertisements from various automotive publications. Most were written during the production of the '66-'77 Bronco and are a window into the past. My only complaints are few. First, some of the articles are incomplete; they have been cut off literaly in mid-sentence, leaving you wondering what happened. The book's page numbers continue without interruption, so it must have been a publishing oversight. Secondly, the book is entirely in black and white, save for the cover art. Some color photos from the later articles would be a nice touch. Overall, this is an excellent reference for any Bronco afficianado.

Anyone with even a casual interest in the early Ford Broncos will find this book worthwhile. It includes many of the early magazine reviews on the truck, as well as several later ones. The articles hit on each year, which provides a good overview of the Bronco as it changed to fit the times. Plenty of technical information can be found here, including options, engines, specifications, etc. It's not a restoration manual, but rather a historical look back at one of the great SUVs of the 20th century. Check it out!

Foundations: A Novel of New Beginnings is described as a story of four characters and their original foundations in life coupled with new foundations in adulthood. However, we are given an additional character's story, his foundation and coming of age that is sad and touching.

Rachel, Walter, Sheila, and Christina are four young adults harboring secrets that greatly affect their lives. While parading through their daily escapes, unbeknownst, their secrets will creep up, crash and burn. You have a total of five characters, all from vastly different socioeconomic backgrounds, intertwined to tell a great story.

While I enjoyed the storyline, the message and exciting climaxes, it falls short because of the grammatical errors. However, with some fine-tuning at proofreading this can be an enjoyable story. Foundations: A Novel of New Beginnings is look at how we can create new foundations to begin again.

Rachel is fierce and on a quest self realization. Tylee spunky, intelligent and loveable reminded me of my little brother. Christina ..Christina --miss Priss mistress herself --believable because she helps one to see that "nobody's stuff" is to good and made of gold. Walter was kuul but a bit of a punk..he needed more backbone.

A book for all times -- It is about life and its reality. The title is a perfect fit because its the backbone of human existence. The characters and the story snaps you into your own truth of life. "Foundations" tells the story of human kind.

The author, Cheril N. Clarke gives the characters a voice and sense of realness. They remind you of your own family and friends. This novel reaches across the intangible and tangible lines of greed, love, lessons of self-awareness, responsibility, forgiveness, deception, honesty and freedom of mind. A novel of one's beginning but not one's ending. You really should not be disappointed after reading it..the ending will astound you and keep you wanting more.

Rachel is finally getting to the place where she feels comfortable about her life. She is about to make some major decisions concerning her writing and enjoys the time she shares molding Tyree into a bright young man. However, things change when she decides to return home for a little R&R. The past, that she so desperately tries to forget is awaiting their reunion.

Walter, after spending some time incarcerated, feels tht now is the time for him to make some life changing decisions. He has gotten some education and feels tht he would be better off working for himself. Realizing that a companion would do him good he meets Shelia. Walter may be ready for a change, but what's in store for him would make some men run and hide their tails.

A book of life's many lessons, Foundations tells the story of reality. Cheril Clarke takes the characters and gives them a voice. This novel touches on the lessons of self-awareness, responsibility, forgiveness, and deception. Foundations is a well-written novel, where the ending is well worth the wait.

I'm having to buy a second copy of this book because the 6 year old is upset that her toddler sister has ripped some of the pockets. While it's clearly geared to younger children, my older one has a strong sentimental attachment to it, which speaks of its impact on kids. It's very simple, but the action/reaction component of the book make it more than just a pop-up book. Surprisingly, most of the the pieces remained with the book for a couple of years (much to my surprise), but now the little one is making quick work of it. Needless to say, it's great at bedtime.

I have to read this book atleast three times at each sitting. Sometimes I even have to hide it, so that we can move on to something else! My daughter highly recommends this one!!!!!!

My two year old daughter enjoys playing with the removeable pieces and surprisingly has not tried to remove them from the book and scatter around the house. The book was quite stiff and hard to "operate" at first - it still does not always work that smoothly. I figure that is will not last until my next child as some of the pieces are already bent and getting dog-earred after a month of use. Some of the moving parts don't work very well already. The story concept of getting ready to go to bed is good, the book needs to be sturdier for this audience.

Interactive and well made

This book is a favorite with my almost three-year-old. It is a simple going to bed story, but has movable parts and clever inserts that involve children as the process unfolds. It hits all the high points, such as cleaning up and brushing teeth, and the slots and tabs are very well done -- pushing the "towel" in the right place changes the "soap in the eyes" face to a smiling one. I would suggest supervision with younger readers, though -- I'm ordering another copy to take the place of our battered, beloved first one!

At a time in every teenager's life where they are struggling to find meaning, udnerstanding, this was a useful read...

4 years later, it still remains as a book that turned me into a bit of a rebel, yet allowed me to realise that we can try to be normal, or we can try ot be different...just be yourself....that's the beauty of life...........

This is a very interesting book, it isn't just funny, it is also a complex look at teen angst, what it means to be normal, there are parts of it that I laugh about when I just think about them. Al Capsella Takes a Vacation was also really funny.

A witty, dry adolescent boy's look at the adults in his life. At times laugh out loud funny. I enjoyed the vignette style and the absurd yet believable characters, especially the grandparents. A most entertaining read.
