This slim, plain looking, little book is evidence that you can't judge a book by its cover. A wealth of information awaits
the reader of this book. I was looking for an instruction guide for new group leaders and this book is a stand-alone resource.
Initially, it describes the different types of groups. It then goes on to give a very solid foundation in group dynamics and
psychology. However, unlike many books it goes beyond the theoretical and addresses the step-by-step practical issues for
group leaders including opening, designed and ending group discussions. Finally it gives solid, simple methods for dealing
with problems that might arise. Bottom line....this book is 99 pages full of useful facts and info on group leadership...best
for the beginner but will provide experts with great tips too.

If The Atlantic Canadian Tides Whispered...

I first encountered "Whylah Falls" in my first year university English class several years ago. It has since, never left my
bedside. It has since, never left my own mind as I continue to develop my own style. I was fortunate enought to attend a seminar
that Clarke, and had the chance to pose a few questions. I asked him "How is it possible to maintain such intense expressive
inspiration over 153 pages?" He replied that for him, the inspiration has never left him when writing the book, and remains
with him everyday. And its true. George Elliot Clarke is Atlantic Canada's most inspired writer today. And this book is the
beginning his era.
The story surrounds the Clemence family living in the fictional village of Whylah Falls, Nova Scotia, on the not quite fictional Sixhiboux River (see the actual Nova Scotian River The Sissiboo). The return of the wayward poet X to Whylah Falls triggers events the move the family and the village folk from poetic lust (Selah), romance (Pablo and Amarantha) and tragedy (the Death of Othello). A tragedy, I might add, of Sophoclean and Shakespearean proportions but without Sophoclean or Shakespearean pretentions-- which are lost within the sincere context of the character's simple and sweet rural maritime lives.
I especially enjoy "The River Pilgrim: A Letter" which is Clarke's ode to his own influences-- Ezra Pound and his bluesy rendering of Li Po's "The River-Merchant's Wife". And Clarke is able to create literary snap shots of the surrounding landscape, religious spirituals and love in pieces like "Each Moment in Magnificent", "solitude", "A Perspective of Saul", "Revelations" and "To Pablo".
Clarke tells the story through inspired poetry and prose which is bluesy, bold, and as intoxicating and compelling as the dark rum drank by he Othello. His writing speaks with a tongue that can only be understood with the heart and history of a maritimer. But for those non-Atlantic Canadians, this book puts Clarke's own past into words. He puts the frozen history of African-Canadian experience in Nova Scotia in motion for everyone to experience and know, if only for a short while.
His characters, speak not for themselves, but for the ages-- times lost in the rural life for Atlantic Canadians.

A Giant of His Age

William Anderson Scott lives well in this biography of one of the great clergymen of the 19th century. Largely self-educated,
Scott exhibits a commanding knowledge of classical literature. His writing is as powerful as his oratory. This man, born in
rural Tennessee, was sought by and preached to some of the great Protestant churches in the world. He was both fearless and
courageous in confronting some of the more flagrant ills of society, such as vigilantism that had a strong hold of San Francisco
in the 1850's. Twice hung in effigy, he was run out of the City, only to be called back years later by some whom he had earlier
alienated. His was an exciting life, capturing the attention of presidents and peasants alike. He left an indelible mark upon
the development of San Francisco. Clifford Drury, historian, has captured the best of the man in this great volume.

This is an amazing book full of beautiful photographs and corresponding text that captures a time in American history when
everthing and anything seemed possible. Pittsburgh undertook a massive urban renewal campaign in the early 1950's and this
book chronicles the events that occurred as the city was transformed from Twain's "hell with the lid off" to the modern
city it is today. The book is printed on museum quality archive paper and is a quality production throughout. The cost was
kept down by grants from local agencies and we reap the benefits of a high quality book at a very affordable price. The
book is composed of full page sepia tone prints from a cadre of photographers who were brought to Pittsburgh specifically
for this project. It strikes a balance between chronicling the construction of a "new city" with an insightful view of the
social fabric of the time. It is also one of the only chronicles of the dislocation of an entire African-American urban community
to make way for urban "progress". The photographic project was coordinated and created by the same individual who administered
the FHA photography projects for the WPA during the depression, of which Dorthea Lange's pictures are so famous. That same
feel of chronicling a unigue time and place in history is evident in this book. The text is equally enlightening and creates
a unified whole with the photo's. I cannot recommend this book highy enough. I have a copy in my home and a framed print
of the cover photo hanging on my wall. This book will be of interest to anyone who enjoys photography, history, social issues,
or just wants a beautiful, informational book for themselves or as a gift.

Expertly edited by Juliet McMaster (Professor Emerita in English at the University of Albert and Fellow of the Royal Society
of Canada), Woman Behind The Painter: The Diaries Of Rosalie, Mrs. James Clarke Hook by Rosalie Hook presents the life, observations
and comments of the wife of the artist James Clarke Hook. Presenting the full narrative details of Rosalie Hook domestic partnership
with her artist husband, Woman Behind The Painter begins with the fifth day after the young couples' marriage in August of
1846, and continues through their travels to May of 1848. Hallmarked with her vivid and tangible dialogue, enhanced throughout
with both color and B/W illustrations, and featuring three appendices ("Index of Artists", "Burton Family Tree", "Hook Family
Tree from Adam Clarke"), a list of cited works, and an extensive Index, Rosalie Hook's Woman Behind The Painter is very highly
recommended for Women's Studies, Art History, and Travel Diary supplemental reading lists and academic reference collections.

Similarities between Jules Verne and Leonardo Da Vinci

Had the opportunity to ask the author ,French Count Gonzaque St Bris , to autograph the book for me after his lecture in Lafayette,
Louisiana. He pointed out some of the highlights of the book when talking about the Marquis de Lafayette. He mentions that
Leonardo Da Vinci (whose home the Count lives in currently in France) designed and built a home for King Francois that had
a telephone/intercom system, doors that opened automatically and an indoor water system in the late 1400s. He compares the
inventiveness of Jules Verne to Leonardo Da Vinci on many levels. The book is an easy read and very interesting.

As a staunch Calvinist, I was a bit leary about buying this title, knowing that he was a Quaker. However, I knew about his
work as a philosopher and the book was only a dollar, so I took it home. Excellent, short sermons written in an almost post-millennial
framework. Great Sabbath reading for anyone serious about the work of the church in the culture. Buy it, its too cheap to
pass up!!!
