Future Russia, where the Tsar rules a world empire with an iron fist. His nobles conspire against him for their own advantage, and everyone's on the take.
Enter NIKOLAI DANTE - a womaniser with a taste for the high life, a man equally handy with his tongue and his sword, and the greatest thief in the empire. Dante has dedicated his life to simply enjoying himself, which makes it awkward when a series of chance events leads to his discovering that he is an illegitimate son of the family Romanov, one of the most powerful groupings in the land. Genetically bonded with an alien weapons-crest that advises him on strategy and creates a sword (or 'bio-blade') when he needs one, Dante soon finds himself up to the neck in palace intrigue, battling to stay afloat in an unfamiliar world. And he isn't helped by the powerful siblings he never knew he had, most of whom aren't exactly happy to meet their new brother...
This Flashman-style tale of Russian swashbuckling revitalised its parent publication, Britain's "2000AD". And with hindsight it's easy to see why. Writer Robbie Morrison (Batman, The Authority, Shimura, White Death, Shakara) and artist Simon Fraser (Judge Dredd, Hellhouse, Shimura, Family) created an anti-hero that stood out as a fully-fleshed character from the first moment he appeared on the page (and incidentally contrasted nicely with the tough guys who make up the majority of comics heroes). Book II, Tsar Wars, may have more emotional impact, but it means nothing without this enjoyable romp that sits just the right side of parody.

I found this recording very entertaining and plan on buying the other volumes as soon as I can lay my hands on them. The readings are excellent, and I have spent much time sitting next to my stereo, simply taking it all in. A wonderful buy...

Salmon Tales (sic)!

Derek (Nobby) Clarke's `No Cook's Tour', with its mischievous wartime anecdotes, provides the perfect partner book to his friend Harry's moving account;* shared experiences, expressed by an artist who joined the army seeking adventure, and by a journalist and musician parted from his young wife.
Derek's amazingly well preserved, detailed sketches bring to life his colourful text. Richly descriptive tales of daring raids on Japanese supplies, reminiscent of `The Great Escape' - with trousers full of stolen food instead of tunnel dirt! On another occasion, a nonchalant stroll across the yard, a salmon tail hanging out of Derek's jacket - his friends, unable to warn the oblivious thief, hold their breath...!
The harsher realities of survival are told with dreadful clarity - in one instance, suffering a flesh-rotting disease, he woke in the night to find a rat eating his arm. Although some of his recollections do make disturbing reading, Derek's affable humour and literary charm really lifted this book for me. An elderly Japanese taskmaster, nicknamed `Spider' on account of his lanky legs and hunched stance, rants and yells instructions. "Oh bugger off you daft old [...]," they tell him, good humouredly pushing him out of the way - I laughed aloud thinking of this skinny creature, beside himself with frustration, waving and screeching all to no effect like some oriental John Cleese.
His optimistic outlook enabled Derek to see opportunities and hope in a situation that brought many men to despair. It was a way of life made tolerable only because he, Harry and their companions kept each others' spirits up; trading `booty', writing and performing musical productions, exchanging daydreams, and sharing bounty and burdens in equal measure. True Heroes.

Powerful story of one woman's courageous fight for justice

Sr. Sarah's eloquently written work will be a must read in social justice and human rights classes around the world. Her vivid descriptions of the torture undergone by dozens of innocent Irish families and especially the devasating effect it had on their children and marriages rips apart the apathy many might feel when the subject of Northern Ireland arises today. We have eyewitness accounts , straight out of novels about KGB and Pinochet tactics, of children being bribed to pin false allegations on their parents, of marriages ripped apart because of offical ex-judical sentencing into internal exile of husbands. The frigthening thing is that this did not happen in Nazi Gemany or Marxist Russia but rather in the country that claims to have the "mother of parliaments" and a bastion of civil liberties. Sr. Sarah's accounts of her simple but poweful ministry in reaching out to the accused and incarcerated in England from the mid 1970s to 1995 catches one for its lack of anger towards the individuals and system that sent to jail 7 year olds because of their ethnic background. Its stories highlight the Prevention Of Terrorism act issued in the early 1970s against the IRA but used exclusively to create a climate of hostility against the Irish in Britain as effectively as any apartheid government could. She documents that 90 percent of those arrested and tortured for 7 days without access to any outside communication were freed without charge. As she points out however it was usually a far different person released than arrested. The psychological as well as physical torture (including strip searching of females by men) saw to it that a generation of Irish britons were forever cast as suspicious in the eyes of their neighbours. A powerful book from a person who exudes grace under the hell of constant intimidation and threat. This is a marvellous work absent of hate, even though it would be justified, and full of dignity. Sr. Sarah deserves our respect for shedding light on a regime which destroyed true democracy based on intrinsic human rights in Britain .

This book proves that thinking too far ahead will result in failure. The engineering technology in the NSU RO80 is common place today, ie front wheel drive, smooth aerodynamic drag coefficiency, rotary engines (well, in some Mazda models, at least); this car and ultimately the company failed because 1960s technology was not up to par for the concept.

This book is the most amazing and wonderful book I have read in ages. Arthur Clarke clarifies my thoughts on religion and many other ideas that I have had for a very long time. I was brought up in a very strict christian home by my widowed mother and although she did her best for me, for which I am very grateful, her religion and her church left me with a load of old baggage which I am now just starting to get rid of. I am 66 years of age and love this book.
