Pachman is one of the few chess authors whose writings form an entire course of chess instruction. But that is not what makes his chess works so good. The quality of the writing, and the comprehensiveness of the subject matter, is consistently great. He does not cut corners. This book on chess tactics (as well as its companion volume, Attack and Defence in Modern Chess Tactics), is an utterly brilliant work of chess literature. I am working methodically through it, and my game is magically inmproving. It should be as standard as his book on Chess Strategy. It is equally awesome.

A Gem

More an essay than a full length treatment of modern chinese art, Clarke has written a gem of a book. A well written, concise and insightful look at, for the most part, Chinese painting. While its short length does not allow Clarke to cover the subject exhaustively he does discuss the major themes in modern Chinese art and provides a great base for researching further into the subject. A true pleasure to read; highly recommended.

About the Book :
SECTION I
Abul Fazal, in Ain-i-Akbari, mentions about The Romance of Amir Hamzah (Dastan-i-Amir Hamzah) that runs into twelve volumes, decorated with one thousand and four hundred illustrations prepared in about the year 1556. Amir Hamzah was the son of Abb al-Muttalib and on uncle of the Prophet Muhammad (b. 570) Hamzah`s illustrations or the Moghul paintings, twelve in number, are presented in this present volume. Apart from being rare pieces of art, these paintings also tell us about the social life and, thus, serve as a source material for writing the social history of the early Moghul period.
SECTION II
The Moghul school of painting derives its origin from the Persian-Mongol school and dates from the reign of Babur (d. 1530), the first Moghul ruler in India. Thirty paintings presented in this volume are the works of some of Akbar`s hundred court-painters, namely, Alam, Farrukh Beg, Manohar and Balchand etc, of the School of Jahangir during the period 1605-1630. The bird and animal paintings and contemporary portraits of Jahangir and Nur Jahan are also included in this collection.

The best set I've seen
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.

I bought this for an organic chemistry course. From looking at other students' models, this is the best set. They all had the same lame set from the bookstore.

The users manual that comes with this is full color and about 50 pages (50 small pages that is, one page measures about 4 x 8) and is a mini chemistry course in itself. It was very helpful in showing you how to model all the different molecules you will encouter in a junior level org chem course.

The set is small, yet it is engineered in such a way that you have more options than the other sets I encountered. The set comes in a hard plastic case in which all the pieces snap into place (the bookstore version sold it to you in a plastic bag!) thus saving you time when you are ready to assemble.

When modeling some molecules, there is a lot of strain put on some of the pieces, and the pieces tend to become deformed. However, this set is made of a polymer that when you put the deformed pieces in boiling water, it returns to its original shape.

Overall, I was very impressed with this set and highly recommend it.

This book and "Original Morgan" should form the basis of your library if you even have a passing interest in the Morgan automobile. This book is a collection of articles over the years written about the Morgan V-8 and covers the early Plus 8 through the Aero 8. It is a large paperback (320 pages) and contains most(all?)of the articles written over the years on this venerable automobile. It appears to be an update of the "1968-1989 Gold Portfolio" so if you buy this Brooklands Portfolio the Gold Portfolio is really redundant.

A great forensic pathologist

"Mostly Murder" by Sir Sydney Smith, late Professor of Forensic Medicine at the University of Edinburgh is another great true-crime autobiography from the first half of the twentieth century, very similar in its witty, epigrammatic style to British Home Office Pathologist, Professor Keith Simpson's "Forty Years of Murder." Both books are fascinating memoirs of 'mostly murders,' famous and obscure, although not always committed in Great Britain--Sir Sidney went to Egypt during the First World War and stayed on as the Principal Medico-Legal Expert to the Ministry of Justice until he returned to Edinburgh in 1928. He also relates cases from Ceylon, Australia (the Sydney Shark affair), and other far-flung ports of the British Empire.

The author most especially seemed to relish his medico-legal battles with the famous Home Office Pathologist, Sir Bernard Spilsbury. In one of his most interesting trials, Sir Sydney testified on behalf of Sidney Fox, a convicted forger, blackmailer, swindler, and thief who was also accused of murdering his own mother for the insurance money--she died less than an hour before her accidental death policy was due to expire.

Dear old mom was a confederate in most of her son's crimes, but Fox emphatically denied strangling her and setting her hotel room on fire, and Sir Sydney believed him. At least he believed that the con man's mother showed no physical evidence of strangulation. He and the great Spilsbury locked horns over the forensic evidence in court and Sir Sidney's client was condemned to the gallows, but was it for the wrong reason?

The fact that Fox renewed his mother's accidental death policy the day before she died was the evidence that hung him, but was he really guilty of murdering her? Sir Sidney thinks not.

Mordant wit abounds in this book, most especially in the chapter, "Accident, Suicide, or Murder?" Sir Sidney relates the suicide by coal-gas of a plumber from Aberdeen who "connected a tube to the gas-pipe before it entered the meter, and so all the way to the room where his body was found."

We've all heard stories about thrifty Scots, but Aberdonians seem to be a legend even amongst their own countrymen.

"Mostly Murder" contains several gruesome photographs from the author's forensic files, but nothing we haven't already seen on television.

This is a fascinating book; not only does it provide a deep insight into the early community of the Sahabas, particularly the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar, but also an insight into the early interaction between the Hanafis and Malikis.

Imam Muhammad transmits the hadith and athar he took from Imam Malik, then, where Imam Malik's verdict differs from Imam Abu Hanifa's, he provides supplementary hadiths from which the Hanafi position is derived.

Each section is concluded with a comment from Imam Muhammad, summarising the verdicts of the Imams.

The book has additional sections on Jarh and Ta'dil, and biographies of Imam Muhammad, Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Malik, all the narrators of the hadith.

A must have for every serious Muslim.
