The definitive well-researched biography focusing on the first woman doctor in America. The many changes of scene and of fortune in Blackwell's life, combined with her penchant for seeking new challenges, make her a lively biography subject.
Up against the limitations of American medicine in the early 1800s & how women suffered at the hands of male physicians, came, from a close-knit family of Dissenters who emigrated from England, a single-minded young woman determined to become a surgeon. A few physicians rallied to her cause, becoming sponsors, but no medical schools would admit her except, eventually, Geneva Medical College of Western New York, and that was actually the result of a joke. The many personal and professional hurdles that Blackwell had to overcome in order to succeed are detailed in this well-documented narrative, preesented within the context of her social and intellectual milieu, her teaching career, and the community of medicine during her lifetime.

Readers of Sayers may like to learn that a second edition of the Lord Peter Wimsey Companion, revised and much expanded, was published in 2002 by the Dorothy L Sayers Society. I designed and typeset the book which was written by the dedicated author of the first edition, Stephan P Clarke.

The story of the crusade of Saint Benedict Center 1940-1950

This book covers The Saint Benedict Center for ten years of a very interesting history that is sure to open some eyes.
The Saint Benedict Center was founded on the Feast of St. Joseph, 1940, in the Parish of St. Paul in the Archdiocese of Boston. And in 1944 His Holiness, Pope Pius XII, conferred the Apostolic Blessing on the Saint Benedict Center. It wasn't long before the Harvard Catholic Club began meeting at St. Benedict Center on Thursday evenings. The girls from Radcliffe College who invited Father Feeney to join them soon became part of the weekly meetings.
The Saint Benedict Center's initial purpose was to provide religious instruction for the Catholic students of the universities. And the Center became very successful at this. It is also important to note that this was all accomplished in keeping with the instructions and full knowledge of Monsignor Hickey, the parish pastor. With Father Feeney's Thursday nights and Dr. Maluf's Tuesday evening lectures being very popular. And it has the blessing of the Pope and the Archdiocese within which it resides up to and including 1947.
Late 1948, early 1949 the persecution of the Center begins. And it does not come from those outside the Church, but the very Archdiocese that supported it and said they did God's work and the Order of Jesuits. Read the truth that the Church tried to hide. This is a bout between Liberalism and Orthodoxy. A book every Catholic must read.

MAI is an international trade treaty currently being negotiated among the world's richest countries in Paris. Think of it as the next generation beyond GATT and the World Trade Organization. MAI will allow foreign corporations and investors to demand cash damages before international tribunals for almost any government action, from local laws to consumer protections, that they claim are a threat to their profits. Laws like the Community Reinvestment Act, that requires banks to loan in local communiteis as a condition for setting up branches, would be forbidden. The investment boycott that helped end apartheid in South Africa, would be forbidden. MAI will severely weaken the ability of governments to control the way foreign-based corporations behave toward their workers, the environment, or society in general. This is a more than must read.

This is another beautifully presented book on roses for your coffee table or library, replete with full-color photographs, watercolors and illustrations depicting a great many varieties of roses.
The chapters are informative, knowledgeable, and full of useful information on roses in gardens, planning a rose garden, the designs of rose gardens, rose recipes and portraits. There is a subject index, as well as an index of illustrations.
I recommend the book highly.

If you're enthralled by 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, you'll have to read this book. Written during, before, and after film production with the complete cooperation of Clarke and Kubrick, this book explains everything but what the %$#&%!!?!!* movie MEANS.
It's got Clarke's original story, THE SENTINEL, and almost 100 pages of photos. It has special effects information, casting stories, and the back-and-forth between Kubrick and Clarke.
It's jam-packed with fascinating (as Mr. Spock would say) info, including a smattering of reviews of the film (including pictures from a fan sequel and demands for refunds).
It's a fine book about a confounding artifact. "Its origin and purpose still a total mystery."

Back in New York City, however, things aren't going much better. Midterms are in full swing, and ever since Kiyoko and Alexa's return from Paris, things have been slightly off-kilter. While Kiyoko insists that she's no longer jealous of Alexa's budding modeling career, Alexa thinks otherwise. But between midterms and go-sees, Alexa finds that she just doesn't have the time to deal with Kiyoko's impending drama, and focuses her efforts on her career. Unfortunately, the more she realizes that her career is taking off, the less time she spends concentrating on her schoolwork, which, in the end, could lead to her destruction. Kiyoko, on the other hand, is managing to keep her head above water in the school department, and has even snagged an interview with a musical genius who could bring FLIRT into new territory. But with the numerous fights taking place between Kiyoko's very own boss and FLIRT's head honcho make her wonder whether she'll have this internship for much longer.
While I obviously prefer when all four of the FLIRT girls are together, living it up in New York City under one roof, I must admit that the amount of turmoil that takes place when they are split up, and placed in different and/or new situations, is quite enticing. The descriptions of London within the pages of LONDON CALLING seem to be far and few, what with the amount of problems caused by Olivia's extremely unlikable, demanding mother; but the adorable little puppy love-esque romance Mel develops with a British boy more than makes up for it. It was heartbreaking to see the amount of fighting that took place between the four FLIRT girls within LONDON CALLING, but the fact that they are such appealing characters only made me more interested in finding out what would happen next. Nicole Clarke has done a wonderful job with keeping the FLIRT flavor alive, even overseas; but the fact that it appears as if the series is coming to a close leaves a sour feeling in my stomach. A British invasion just in time for the holidays!
