My intro to the brilliant imagination of Sir Arthur

It's been awhile since I've read this, and although he went on to write many more sophisticated novels after this one, it still remains one of my favorite stories ever. First read it as a teen in the early '60s, when I was getting into sci-fi reading Heinlein and Asimov; but this tale stirs the imagination and kindles the adventurous spirit in a special way. Kind of a "Go west (up & out?) young man" for the 2nd half of the 20th century and many to follow. It made me a fan of AC's for life.
The protagonist of the story lives in a city that could be considered utopian, especially considering the concept of cities as we know them. He's different than the rest of the city dwellers in that he's the first child born (rather than "recycled") in a million years. He is also the only one who wonders what lies outside of the city. Despite all the city has to offer he is determined to find out, and finds a way to leave. His adventure eventually brings back a sense of the need to grow to the stagnant perfection of the city.
I think that out of all the influences to my evolvement, this one story gave me a love and need to "know what else is out there" that is essential to the human spirit. It enabled me to overcome hesitation over the unknown and just pick up and do it that lead me to various corners of the world and various experiences.
If you're a fan of AC's, good sci-fi or adventure, or just have that spark of interest as to what lies over the next hill, you owe it to yourself to read this tale. It'll stay with you always.
This is written on the day that Sir Arthur has gone on to his next great adventure, and although I mourn his passing, I know he is thrilled to be going.

If you are interested in the environment which generated the powerful West Coast Native art, the artist, Emily Carr, conjures it up in this original book. Her travels to their coastal villages are translated into these atmospheric essays.

this book by Emily Carr gives a very wonderful and descriptive account of the Pacific Northwest along British Columbia's shores. Emily Carr was a very unique woman who defied her times in her interactions with Native Peoples and her adventurous independance. This book details her explorations among the Queen Charlotte Islands. It is so descriptive it makes one feel that they are actually on the west coast.

I'm almost half-way through this book, and for the first time I'm understanding the concepts behind metabolic diseases. Rather than overwhelming the reader with biochemistry, the author helps organize the diseases into practical categories and emphasizes concepts rather than details. This book is a good read, plus it will serve as an excellent resource for future reference. Highly recommended for any primary care provider who cares for infants and children.

Excellent review of strategies for the evaluation of suspected inborn errors of metabolism. Simple and eloquent writing makes this an exceptional introduction to the topic for students, residents and fellows. Organized by organ system and symptom complex, it makes for easy referencing to generate a differential diagnosis as well. Would highly recommend for genetics, neurology and pediatrics training programs. It will be instituted into our required reading for rotating residents in our Child Neurology department. The price is very reasonable and well within the means of trainees.

brilliant exposition of non-linear devices

I took some undergrad electronics courses and used one of those 50lb textbooks with fancy pictures and tons of problems at the end of each chapter. After a year of taking undergraduate electronics and doing all those problems, I still found transistors mysterious and scary. Then I was introduced to this rather small, light textbook in a graduate electronics class and boy am I glad I got my hands on this thing. After reading the first chapter, I was enlightened beyond belief. I have to admit that the math is intense (mostly Bessel functions and stuff) but the analysis is very general and very rigorous with the assumptions and simplifications clearly spelled out before any analysis. I can go on and on about what a great book this is but I will only say that if you're looking for a rigorous mathematical treatment of non-linear devices then this book is for you. If, on the other hand, infinite summations of Bessel functions scare you then stay away and stick with one of those kiddie undergrad electronics textbooks like Microelectronic Circuits by Sedra and Smith which is packed with lots of useless, redundant stuff and enjoy throwing your back out everytime you have to bring that thing to school/work.

' A.F.N Clarke served as a paratroop officer in Belfast and in Crossmaglen, place-names recognized on the mainland only through their recurrence in the grim headlines and the grimmer newsreel images.most observers are insulated from reality by the media: what does it really feel like to be part of an army of occupation on home soil. ? What are the private attitudes of trained soldiers, operating in conditions of extreme stress, fatigue, and squalor ordered to hold the lines in an ancient quarrel -- a quarrel whose causes may be blindingly irrelevant, but whose consequences are deadly.?
Here is a report from the front line, a documentary account of the emotions, and the reactions, of one of the men we pay to kill. This is an account that spurns compromise: this, precisely is how that sad land feels, reported by a professional. It makes disconcerting reading: A.F.N Clarke, works with unpalatable fact, : the vision that frames his story has an unwelcome clarity-and he brings to this account the unquestionable talents of a gifted writer..

Contact is the best account of military service in North Ireland during the latest eruption of terrorism. It gives us a fresh view of the "Troubles" from a British paratrooper who served in Belfast and Crossmaglen. It discusses lessons that might apply to the violence now taking place in Isreal.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I laughed out loud several times. I live in Lexington Kentucky, so the story surrounding Lexington and the Kentucky Derby were the most enjoybale to me. I learned more about the Kentucky Derby from this book than I have living in Kentucky for the last 30 years. The characters in this book are fantastic. I found my self rooting for some, crying for some and laughing with them all. The author makes you fall in love with each and every one of them. The history that is throughout the book is very interesting. From New Orleans, to Lexington, to New York, I could feel myself in every city. Plus I learned things about these places I never would have without this book. The author really did a great job on the research. There were several times I had a really hard time putting this wonderful book down. I read the first book in this series when it came out a few years ago and was on pins and needles waiting for this one. Now I can't wait for Day Three. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Only rarely have I picked up a book of historical fiction--and really enjoyed it. THIS book changed my perspective for many reasons. Looking at all the organizations Ms. Clarke acknowledged made me realize the incredible amount of work, interviews and research--labors of love--that went into the crafting of this work of historical humor/fiction. Having lived in Kentucky for more than 15 years now, I have become aware of some of the incidents which make up the 'meat' of this book. Having lived in NY the majority of my life made me recognize the history and lore relating to many other situations which arise in the course of this novel. A friend mentioned she smiled while reading most pages--and actually laughed out loud while reading others. So did I! Makes me truly hungry for Day Three to be ready for publication RIGHT NOW! Well worth the read--but read Mint Julep, Day One first--you won't be disappointed!

DeLorean was a great man, like Henry Ford. I regret how the British government treated him. It just shows that our antitrust laws can be circumvented on the global scale. Big business doensn't like competition. On a happy note, they still manufacture DeLorean's if you want to buy one. They're in the price range of 20 grand. Not bad for a great car that has style. DeLorean was a great Christian man who was blackmailed by our own government for the sake of big business. Between English government and our own government, it just shows how our government has become of the rich and powerful, by the rich and powerful and for the rich and powerful.

The De Lorean DMC-12 (manufactured 1981-1982) was and remains to this day an automobile classic of all time--not only because of its superb styling and its role in the "Back to the Future" films but also because its history typified the central theme of Greek tragedy: a fatal flaw (in this case, reliance on unfulfiled promises of the British government), eliciting pity and fear in those witnessing it. This book, providing reprints of the most important motor magazine articles evaluating the car, is a must for De Lorean fans. To be sure, Clarke's book should be purchased along with John Z. DeLorean's autobiography (titled, simply, "DeLorean," Zondervan, 1985) and the second edition of John Lamm's "De Lorean: The Stainless Steel Illusion" (Red Lion Press, 2003). It is of more than passing interest that John DeLorean himself, having created a genuinely transcendent automobile--one that is indeed timeless. as this book illustrates--ultimately became a Christian believer.

An exhaustively in-depth accounting of the life of mathematician, theologian, and philosopher Rene Descartes

Philosophy professor Desmond Clarke presents Descartes: A Biography, an exhaustively in-depth accounting of the life of mathematician, theologian, and philosopher Rene Descartes. Obscure during his life, yet famous after his death, Descartes was a crucial contributor to the Scientific Revolution, and even tried to prove the existence of God, though his contemporaries considered those attempts questionable at best. He is immortalized today in the name of the Cartesian coordinate system, and the transformation of thought he helped usher has left repercussions up to the modern day. Descartes: A Biography examines both Descartes' personal life and his great discoveries and achievements, and is highly recommended for library and biography shelves.
Certain to Become the Standard Descartes Biography

Let's make this short but sweet: Over the last few years there has been a spate of Descartes biographies, none of them satisfying. But now Cambridge U. Press has come out with what I feel will be the standard biography of Descartes, and it had better be, inasmuch as it's over 500 pages. Clarke's biography differs from the others in that he takes the full range of Descartes' interests into account (theology, philosophy and the science) as he traces Descartes' intellectual development and his ultimate role as midwife to the Scientific Revolution, a role he `inherited' from Kepler and Galileo and one which he expanded into a search for a theory that would link theology, science and philosophy. A recluse who spent much of his life in Holland and kept in touch with the intellectual currents of his day mainly by correspondence, Descartes was a fascinating character ands Clarke does an excellent job straddling the line between Descartes the man and Descartes the thinker.
In addition, the book is quite well-written; a worthy addition to the Cambridge U. Press series of Philosophical Biographies. (Previous subjects include Spinoza, Hobbes, Hegel, Kant and Kierkegaard.) While demonstrating his mastery of his subject, Clarke does an excellent job of explaining Descartes' philosophy and intellectual interests without boring his readers, a trick more scholarly authors should learn.

For anyone interested in understanding the depth of the poetry of Hafiz, Clarke's translations are a must. His comprehensive knowledge of Sufism and the hidden meanings in Hafiz' poetry is superior to any renderings that have come before these translations or after. Well worth reading whether for pleasure or research.

This book is an excellent tool for learning Persian. What could be added, if anything, is the book in farsi of which the author speaks. But since one is supposed to study, is kind of fun to search through the web or with the help of Iranian friends, in libraries or wherever, the texts in persian.
One or two originals (texts in persian) are certainly enough for at least six month's study. So with a book like this all that one needs is to work with patience, pleasure, and with the hope that the spirit of Hafiz will come to whisper into the student's heart.
