In this day of 'fluffy' Christianity and a water downed gospel, it is great to read work from a scholar who love GOD's word and has studied it for application and life.

What was it like to spend time with Jesus?
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-26
This book is about one man's Journey in his mind...

I have read and reread this book a few times, and it always refreshes
me. Even the premise is rather mystical, about a current day Man, who
wishes to be with Jesus so much. He (dreams) a trip back in time to
be with Jesus and the disciples, and other biblical characters. It is
very well done, reads quickly, and shows me a great example of being
with Jesus, and Jesus with the Father, contrasted against the constant "doing for Jesus" that preoccupies much of Christendom these days.

This book is a treasured component of my library, I buy copies to give away, lend, and use in Spiritual Direction.

Glenn Clark may just also have been the originator of WWJD? ...

A commentary on the Greek text of the Epistle of Paul to the Ephesians,

Excellent resource for very serious Bible student
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-23
Eadie's commentary is a classic on the book of Ephesians. It does require a working knowledge of Biblical Greek. Eadie is able to do an intensely technical analysis of the book (including consideration of textual variants and commentary on the Greek text itself), while still also making practical and devotional observations which are very helpful. Eadie leaves you with the sense that you have really wrestled with the hard exegesis of a passage and and that you have gained from it a far greater awe of God, of the greatness of Christ, of the depths of your own depravity, and of the hope of a deeper walk with God. Again, it is for the very serious student of the Bible. One who is less than very serious or who does not want to labor over the Greek text will probably find the book hopelessly tedious. If however, one is willing to mine diamonds in concrete, you will find Eadie a truly rewarding expedition.

Deftly compiled and edited for contemporary readers by Henry C. Clark, Commerce, Culture, & Liberty: Readings On Capitalism Before Adam Smith is an amalgamation of significant writings published before Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" (1776) impacted the world's perceptions on economics. A wide variety of authors ranging from Voltaire, to Ferdinando Galiani, to Jean-Jacques Rousseau, contribute to this absorbing source of pre-Adam Smith perceptions and judgements about economic matters prior to the birth of the American nation as a capitalist beacon to the nations of the world.

A great follow-up
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-25
Communion and Otherness is the follow-up volume to Zizoulas' earlier work Being as Communion. BAC argued for the basis of genuine unity between God, people and in the church on the basis of a personalist ontology where unity is not in the 'substance' of God or shared beliefs but in the seeking of a unique person to make their personhood real by communion in love. In CAO, he takes on the task of describing how that unity is balanced by a genuine 'otherness' in relationships, that only a true person can allow for 'difference' and 'distance' from another without 'division'. This also has implications for our relation to the environment, as an 'other' for whom we must care. Zizioulas is strongly invested in a Cappadocian formulation of the Father as the monarch and cause of the Trinity, which I am still not sure that I accept, but he does make a convincing case for the need for a personal basis to all reality, both within and without the Trinity. He also takes time to rebut criticisms that his theological framework is really existentialism in Orthodox dress. I believe that Zizioulas has the best response that I have seen to the challenge of modern atheism. A thoroughly practical and illuminating work of theological reflection, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

The People Who REALLY Founded America
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-06
This book is the 2nd in a larger series called "The Frontier People of America". These people did the rough work of creating a civilization, and for their reward were cheated by eastern land companies and now renounced by the modern culture of our nation. It's the Indians who are now the "good guys" as if such an easy distinction could be made. Van Every is an excellent author and lays out the facts about atrocities and achievements of both sides of the frontier struggle. The hardships the pioneers face should give us pause when we complain about our alleged "problems".

"Computer Science Project Work: Principles and Pragmatics" has the three hallmarks of a classic: it is passionate, well-researched, and well-written. It is passionate about educating new software developers, designers, and analysts wisely and humanely. It is full of real information--the authors collected data on hundreds of real group projects and pedagogical best practices. It is written without ostentation or obfuscation--it is as clear as water. I wish I'd had this book from the beginning of my teaching career.
