Fine economy of language, an ample dose of clever, yet more than that, these poems offer the reader a distinctive vision of
both the everyday and the extraordinary. Some laughter and some insights in the same volume.

Book was exactly as described (former library edition with minor writing inside), it was in very good condition, and arrived
very quickly. I would definitely recomend both this book (for anyone who is interested in the origins of brainstorming as
used in American business), and I highly recomend this vendor for out of print books.

A ground-breaking study of a diaconal model of church

Review Date: 2006-02-07
This book is a ground-breaking study of a new model of church,'the diaconal church'. Its background is a world facing momentous
change and a church stuck in 'the mould of Christendom'. The author argues that for the church to fuflil its mission in
today's world, four fundamental changes have to take place. First, it must hammer out a theology of community rooted in
the nature of the kingdom as a learning community. Second, it must be transformed into a 'diaconal church' whose mission
is to serve 'the kingdom community' within the world. Third, its 'laity must be liberated' from clerical domination to become
servants of the kingdom community. Fourth, the role of the deacon as catalyst is now crucial for the liberation of the laity.
The book includes five case-studies of the diaconal church in action, and an evaluation of the diaconal potential of five
worldwide Christian 'renewal movements'.

Groundbreaking objective research--every pastor must read

I've read several books in the past couple of years about bridging the gap between the different generations, and I have to
say that this one is the most useful. It's written from an objective point of view, and so gives powerful "snapshots" of different
types of congregations and how they are dealing with the generation gaps---some successfully, some not.
Instead of reading about someone else's cookie-cutter "fix-it program," I got a lot of ideas and insights that might work in my own congregation. I highly recommend this book.

The Perfect Primer

In this short volume Dünzl certainly accomplished what he set out to do in providing readers with exactly what the title promises,
a brief history of the doctrine of the Trinity in the early Church. This work is by no means exhaustive yet the reader will
not feel the least bit slighted after having completed it, on the contrary, they will be hungry for more. Designed to serve
as an introduction to more in-depth works such as R.P.C. Hanson's The Search for the Christian Doctrine of God or Rowan Williams'
Arius: Heresy and Tradition, Dünzl provides us with an exciting recounting of the Nicene era of Church history.
Written in a narrative style Dünzl doesn't bore us with mere fact quoting nor does he bog us down with voluminous quotations from primary (or secondary) sources, but don't let that discourage you, he still manages to handle the issues he speaks on responsibly and with attention to detail. When reading through this little book one senses that he definitely has the (lay)student in mind as nothing is overly technical (only key Greek, Latin, and Hebrew terms are used and they are always transliterated) and everything is easily retain-able (the narrative style helps to inductively instill the information rather than have to rely on rote memorization). This tiny work can (and should certainly) be used pedagogically.

My 16-year-old daughter was preparing for The Global History and Geography Regents Examination, a standardized assessment
for students enrolled in New York schools.
This book was recommended reading to prepare her for the test. From multinational economics to human rights issues, wars, and technology, this book was a great resource for studying. I expect her to really well on this exam, and this book should ensure that she does!

Welcome Back for a Classic

It's good to welcome back this classic of U.S. mining history. Clark C. Spence's British Investments and the American Mining
Frontier, 1860-1901 has been the starting place for looking at foreign investment in American mining ever since its publication
in 1958, when it won the American Historical Association's distinguished Beveridge Award.
In order to progress, American mining in the West needed lots and lots of development capital. Local capitalists in the states and territories provided some of the initial upfront capital. Gold Rush enriched San Francisco stepped into the breach, but increasingly ever more capital was needed. Mining promoters turned to the East and to Europe, particularly Britain, for funding.
Bill Robbins' Colony & Empire: The Capitalist Transformation of the American West provides a good discussion of this evolution in funding resources as he explores his theme of the capitalization and globalization of the West. And this is where Spence comes in, examining the promotional efforts to engage British capital, as well as the problems associated with distant and foreign investment. Amidst the general discussion, he particularly focuses on the Emma Silver Mining Company, Ltd., in Utah as a case study. Ironically, while British capital played a key role in developing the American mining industry during these years, very few of the 500+ British companies involved made any money.
W. Turrentine Jackson's recently reissued classic Treasure Hill: Portrait of a Silver Camp, which is also wonderful to have back in print, provides further illustration of the role and problems of British investment, in this instance the Eberhardt & Aurora Mining company in the White Pines Mining District in Nevada. Jeremy Mouat's Roaring Days: Rossland's Mines & the History of British Columbia is also enlightening since it offers a comparison with British investment across the border from Washington and Idaho in British Columbia.
Spences's British Investments in the American Mining Frontier, 1860-1901 is essential to understanding the history of American mining history, as is his more recent Mining Engineers & the American West: The Lace-Boot Brigade, 1849-1933, which has also been republished by the University of Idaho Press. Now the Mining History Association offers the Clark C. Spence Award for the best book published on American mining history.
