TOUGH TIMES, TOUGH PEOPLEReview Date: 2004-01-13
dry narratives, best mined for their factual content. This work is
one of the rare exceptions - a highly entertaining and informative
book to read.
In 1850, at the age of 23, William Dennison Bickham set out from
Cincinnatti, Ohio to test his luck in the California goldfields. His
journey to San Francisco and his adventures in the American River
area of California were recounted in letters sent to the Cincinnatti
Gazette, for which he was a correspondent, and in a journal he kept
for the benefit of his sisters.
Bickham has a mature narrative style that draws one in until it
becomes difficult to put the book down. While the tales of his
adventures romp right along, his sensitivity and powers of
observation yields passages of descriptive beauty, providing the
reader with a view of a world long gone.
This adventurer's wry sense of humor, usually directed at himself,
spices the tale from start to end. His reminiscences are rich and
wide-ranging: fighting his (and his fellow passengers') corner for
decent food on the sea voyage to Panama; the hardship of living alone
at the "Blue Cabin" and mucking for gold, often finding as little
value as $1.40 per day; mending his own "unmentionables"; competing
in foot races and jumping contests; running Whig candidates for
office; experiencing the dreadful San Francisco fire of 1851; holding
the position of Customs Inspector for the Port of San Francisco.
This publication is enriched with contemporary drawings, maps, an
introduction, prologue, epilogue, notes, bibliography and index.
Congratulations are in order to Randall E. Ham for a very professional
job of editing. Thanks to his efforts, William Dennison Bickham speaks
again, and takes his readers on a wonderful journey through what must
have been a wonderful time in America.

A New Guiding Star in the Lewisian Sky!Review Date: 2008-01-02
Well, it's widely known that Lewis was a scholar of English literature and has become a mentor to many readers through his insights into practical Christian living. But he has much more to offer. Lewis was an astute reader of Scripture and he pieced together many Biblical texts to form a coherent theology. Why? Because the Bible was the authoritative source for him, and Christ was mankind's hope of salvation.
This brings us to Dr. Clark, a professor under whom I have had the privilege to study for several years. He has studied the works of Lewis for nearly forty years, and has taught courses on Lewis on the college, seminary and graduate levels for more than thirty years.
That's only half the picture; his field is Biblical Studies, particularly New Testament and Greek. Armed with a PhD in Biblical Studies from the University of Notre Dame, and ordained by the Assemblies of God, he is able (as few are) to explain Lewis, locate the Biblical texts he uses, correct him when necessary (rarely), and draw out the amazing implications of his theology in a way that everyone can understand. Take Chapter 6, for example.
Here Dr. Clark explains how Lewis came up with a convincing solution to what may be the greatest stumbling block of Christianity. If Christ is the only way of salvation, is it just of God to reject untold millions who never heard the good news of the gospel simply because they happened to live in pre-Christian cultures? Lewis has the answer, and Dr. Clark is the first, as far as I know, to reveal it and explain it so well.
This is powerful stuff; millions today struggle with this theological problem and would welcome what Lewis believed if only they knew him beyond The Chronicles and Screwtape. Finally they can; "Lewis and Clark" should be on Oprah, and discussed by Dennis Praeger! And that's just one chapter! Buy this book! You'll be glad you did! As you read through this enlightening work, you will agree with me: your money and time have been invested--not spent!

One of the Best chemistry books out there!Review Date: 2005-02-09
After reading his website , I decided it is only fitting that I buy his book, support the author of a terrific website , and maybe learn something new. Mr. Clarke has organized this book, and it's chapters extremly well , and the content is excellent. Although this book does not try to teach a particular subject in the deapth required for A levels it does teach you the fundamentals and principles required to answer the questions. I found this book a great help, especially in Chemical and Ionic Equilibria and the other chapters are just as well done.
After explaining the necessary terminology and definitions , he goes on to give detailed examples and solutions to a variety of questions.
IF there is one thing that struck me about this book is that the end of chapter questions have solutions!.Not only does he give you the answer, but the working! This is often absent in many textbooks in current circulation. I have reccomended this book to many friends and I am yet to find a better book that deals in calculations in this way.
