These little books are great! Just the right size for my daughter's little hands. The books have many actual photos and some beautiful illustrations. I bought this box set not only to encourage letter identification but, to promote language and reading skill (turning pages/pretending to read). My daughter was behind in language skills and thes books helped enormously.

The images are stunning and I was shocked that the book was not a collectors item. The large scale black and white photo of the white people, tools, and rural farms of Tennessee are amazing. Included are photos of water baptism, men making wooden wheels for buggies and horse-drawn plows, portraits of craggly old Appalachian faces, a one room school house full of kids reading, and old barns.

George Rogers Clark

Review Date: 2005-12-28
Review Date: 2005-12-28
It looks, especially through Bakeless's eyes, as if George Rogers Clark got a bum deal near the end of his life: not only did he have to have his leg amputated after it was burned in an "accident" (he might have been drunk), but he was slandered by James Wilkerson which not only cost him his commission but his reputation as well.
Born in Virginia, Clark started out as a surveyor in the Ohio Valley. Traveling to Kentucky he became aware of British intrigue in that area and Illinois, much of it emanating from Detroit and involving compelling the Indians to harass the American settlers. Clark reported this to the Virginia authorities, who in 1777 sanctioned him to raise a small militia to fight the enemy in the Old Northwest. In the summer of 1778, he and his men were victorious at the British stronghold of Kaskaskia and then turned their attention to capturing Vincennes. In a brilliant and daring mid-winter march across the swamps of Illinois, Clark surprised the reinforcements at Vincennes (Fort Sackville) and captured the place. He hoped to move against Detroit next, but had to give it up when supplies ran low. But the Americans had won control of the Old Northwest.
Life was an anitclimax for Clark after the war until his "accident" and dispute with Wilkerson. Just about broke after that, he lived near Louisville until he died in 1818.
Bakeless captures the man well, but has a tendency to overstate Clark's position. There was also a dark side to Clark, stemming from his frontier culture, most notable in his hatred for the Indians. Personal habits, especially his drinking, are mentioned by Bakeless, but are downplayed. Clark was instrumental in securing the Old Northwest for America, but his military successes there were not the sole reasons for that conquest: diplomacy also played a big role. There's no doubt that Clark was the hero of Vincennes, but he was not, as Bakeless at times portrays him, as the sole hero of the Old Northwest. Regardless, Clark didn't get what he deserved at the end, and 100 years later the people of Vincennes raised a monument to him that still stands overlooking the Wabash where old Fort Sackville stood. Bakeless's biography is okay, but not the definitive work on Clark.

The few dollars to buy this book is definitely worth it. It's an incredibly valuable tool which I reference from time to time being heavily involved in my own business that focuses on development.
I've read various books on screenwriting at film school, but in my opinion, no other book does a better job at simplifying the process and actually inspiring you to start writing your script. I've always been confused at where you start and this book helped me get going in that perspective.
It's really the simplest explanation I've ever read that helped me understand plot, format, and the reality of marketing my screenplay. It's a quick read and actually takes the confusion away.

Although I'm currently in highschool, I still remember reading Barney in Space along with its prequel in my second grade classroom. Even back then I was a mini-geek and knew all of the school librarians by name. They knew me as the Barney kid, as I'd check this book out every other month. I would religiously read it multiple times from second grade when I first read it to the end of fifth grade when I graduated the school. My only disappoint was that the book was (and still is) out of print, so I couldn't have my own copy. This tale about a newly adopted orphan (a young boy named Barney) who must adjust to his new life has his work cut out when in the first book he met Tibbo, a boy from another planet. I won't give the first book away, but in Barney in Space (this book) Barney fears for Tibbo, who is stuck on a malfunctioning space ship, but has enough trouble himself when a crazy alien brainwashes Barney's friends/family and decides that Barney must be taken off Earth to the home planet. This story once kept me on the edge of my seat, and I now must leave this review to go see where I can buy a copy and 'relive my youth'.

Definately one of the most engrossing Regency novels it has ever been my pleasure to encounter! Dulcie Bligh, the dear Baroness, is a fascinating protagonist. With her ever-changing hair colours, her outrageous pets, and delight in amateur sleuthing, she keeps the action moving right along, pulling the reader with her. A must read for anyone who enjoys a love story AND a bit of a mystery, complete with a generous dollop of humour on the side.
