A Truly Independent Perspective

I first saw Mr. Viorst on PBS an an expert on Middle East affairs and was impressed by his keen insights. Considering that he is a Jewish writer living in the United States, he has established a highly independent and well-founded perspective on the state of Israel and its relationships with both the Arab world and the United States. After reading all of Henry Kissinger's writings on the Arab-Israel struggle, I found this book a wonderful counterpoint to the cold war outlook on Mideast politics taken by so many American administrations. I would compare it to David Shipler's perspective in his book on Arab and Jew; Wounded Spirits in a Promised Land. Perhaps with the end of the cold war, Mr. Viorst's perspective on the Arab-Israeli struggle will begin to find more resonance in the capitols of the western world. I would highly recommend this book to any serious student of Mid-East politics and history. In a time when we are fighting a battle against Osama bin Laden, Mr. Viorst illuminates the reasons why American policy in the Middle East may have, purposefully or inadvertently, helped to inflame so many Arabs while bringing no lasting peace to the region.
He also does an excellent job, through the political history of Israel since its inception, sorting out the movements, Ashkenazi and Sephardi, Zionist and Revisionist, etc. that have pushed and pulled Israel in conflicting directions over the past 50 years. For that alone, this book should be compulsory reading for any student of Israeli political history. While it was written in the late 1980's, it still shines a light on the events which have since transpired.

Gordon Clark excels in commentating. He avoids the all-too-common pitfalls of commentating on current events and spewing forth an autobiographical sob-story. Clark limits himself to the text, and the text is clarified and God glorified in a way I have seen in the writings of no other commentator.

The author of this book, Larry McCabe, is re-releasing books that have gone out of print for one reason or another. This particular book is an old friend. After I received it, I went into my library and found a copy. It has been in print in one form or another for 25 years. Most instruction books don't last anywhere near that long. First, this book (as the author warns) is not for beginners. You need to be familiar with the movable blues scales we all use. If you are playing out, and feel comfortable with the whole neck, get this book. The style of lead is closer to Gatemouth Brown and Freddie King than anyone else. If you don't know who these men are, buy their CDs. You are in for a treat. Please read the author's introduction. There is a lot of good info there. The Tab system is the older style. It should take about 30 seconds to adjust. It's actually easier to read than the current form. If you consider yourself a Rock guitarist instead of Blues, you really could use this book. If you use these solos as a "how to", instead of just memorizing them, they will give you some new weapons. You know, for scaring the heck out of other guitarists.

Before this book, I had no idea what it meant to be a prisoner of war in WWII. I was astonished at the things this man and his comrades survived and endured. Crammed into these camps for months (or years, in most cases), they created a community and did their best to keep their bodies and souls alive. I had no idea that the camps were this big or this intricate. 33 Months is an amazing piece of history that makes the reader feel grateful for the creature comforts we all take for granted, as well as for the efforts of the many soldiers who have sacrificed so much for our country.
Reading this book, I realized that most of the veterans of the big, historic wars are all almost gone from this earth, and that with them a huge piece of history will become less real to us. General Clark is obviously a very honorable man with a good heart, and I'm grateful that he shared his story with the rest of us.

I purchased this handy cookbook for my daughter's 12th birthday. The author has a clever sense of humor and an ability to break cooking vocabulary down into easy to understand words for those previously uninitiated in the kitchen. Now at age 22 and married for a year, my daugther said that she can't find her copy since moving several times and wants another for some of her favorite recipes. The book is not a children's cookbook, but for anyone new at cooking. I'd love to see a repeat printing.

What an enjoyable read! The story takes you from sadness to joy to laughter to shock! Ms. Dryden writes in much the same style as Fannie Flagg and her use of phrasing and descriptions put smiles on your face. This was a very light, wonderfully sweet story of two lonely people in the big city of Chicago, that leaves the reader with a sense of hope. Beware of the ending! I'm looking forward to the sequel!

This powerful account of war in the air on the Western Front during World War I is by the distinguished military historian Alan Clark. Covering fighting squadrons on both sides of the conflict, ACES HIGH captures the lives of the idealistic young men who joined the air services in the early months of the war, who, if they survived, grew into the embittered but courageous aces of 1916 and 1917 - men like Manfred von Richthofen, Albert Ball, Mick Mannock, Georges Guynemer, Charles Nungesser and Raoul Lufbery.
In 1914 the conquest of the air was newer, less sure and vested with a still higher romance than that of space today. The frailty of the aeroplanes, the incendiary bullets of the enemy, the banning of parachutes as "likely" to lower morale' made death a three to one certainty. The aces performed acts of incredible bravery and skill but almost all lost their lives or their sanity. Alan Clark writes of the planes they flew and their evolution from "stringbags" and "flying coffins" to the sophisticated tactical machines of 1918. He also tells of the high commands who failed to recognized the significance of the aerial contribution to the war and sent men to their deaths in inadequate and badly designed planes.
More than a chronicle of aerial warfare during five turbulent years, ACES HIGH is a highly illustrated and exciting account of men at war in the skies and an illuminating survey of the tactics and strategies that led to ultimate Allied victory. Originally published in 1973, this new edition includes eighty new photographs and illustrations.

Best book ever written for the troubled drinker!

It is very unfortunate that this book is now out of print. I have read many books on troubled drinking, and either they were too optimistic, or too pessimistic. Mr. Vaughan's book is the only one that really tells it like it is, and that provides a clear, do-able program for recovery. He doesn't demand that you attend a certain number of meetings (although he doesn't deny that they can be helpful in very many cases), nor does he insist on your belief in a higher power. Like the remarkably effective "SmokEnders" program for smokers (which also, sadly, doesn't seem to exist any more), his methodology provides numerous alternative strategies that you can employ simultaneously---so that if one doesn't work for you, or if you "slip" with that one, there is always a safety net of other strategies that, combined, can see you through the crisis.
The good news is that numerous copies of this book are still available, at very low prices, from third-party sellers. I strongly recommend that ANYONE who has even the slightest question at the bottom of his or her heart about whether or not they are really a troubled drinker should immediately order a copy of this wise and amazing book, before it is no more.
