In Matthew And The Margins: A Sociopolitical And Religious Reading, Warren Carter (Pherigo Chair in New Testament at the Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City) provides readers with a new, informative, challenging, and thought provoking commentary emphasizing the roles of marginality and empire in the Gospel of Matthew. Verse by verse, Carter presents this key gospel as a counter-narrative shaping the followers of Jesus as an alternative community, resisting the authorities of both synagogue and state. Highly recommended for students of New Testament studies, Matthew And The Margins reveals and documents how the Gospel anticipates the time when Jesus' return will establish God's reign over all -- including the imperial powers of the state.

Matthew and the Margins: A Socio-Political and Religious Reading by Warren Carter is a stupendous book that I would recommend reading for anyone looking for greater depth than Mel Gibson's movie The Passion or Rick Warren's pop book The Purpose Driven Life, both of which are in vogue as of the writing of this review. The book is a verse by verse introductory commentary to the Christian Gospel of Matthew and could appeal to believer, nonbeliever and agnostic alike, although it is written from social scientific and religious viewpoints. The focus of the book is on the social marginality, or alienation, of the Christian figure Jesus as depicted in the book of Matthew. By marginality, Carter means living on the fringe of society rather than being a part of the political and religious established center of society. The author, I believe rightly, contends that the book of Matthew is a book of resistance against th Roman imperial control and the Jewish synogogue leaders of the day, although certainly not the Jewish people. The author avoids being a know it all and admits he doesn't know who wrote the book or who Matthew was. Unlike most relgious commentaries on books of the bible, this book is highly readable. Even if you just want to gain a better appreciation and understanding of the Christian story without necessarily becoming a believer, I would commend this book to you. Nonetheless, Carter points out that the book of Matthew was originally written for "consenting readers." However, Carter doesn't write what he believes his audience wants to hear - which he calls "cheap assent." True to the social marginality theme, this book probably won't be a best seller like some of the pop Christian books currently in vogue (Prayer of Jabez, Purpose Driven Life, etc.), nor will it gain the acclaim or wealth to its author such as a movie like The Passion, but it is an indelibly "experiential" book just like a good movie is. I highly commend this book to skeptic, agnostic, and believer alike. As this reviewer likewise aspires to a marginal role, I have elected to remain anonymous to hopefully allow the interested reader to find this intriguing book on his/her own possibly through this review.

I own a signed first edition of this fine tale. I found it as I cleaned out old books from my great aunt's house before it was sold. This exciting story really gives a great picture of life in the Carolina colony in the early days of European settlement. It has a great storyline, well told, a strong love interest, brave deeds of daring, serious villainy and natural disaster in an historically accurate framework. This was not the Crown Colony of Virginia, but it was a land of opportunity for people trying to build a future and leave behind a past. If you are at all interested in pre-Revolutionary coastal North Carolina, this is a "must read". It is worth looking for!

I bought "The Mind's Eye" for a poetry writing class. This is one of the few books that I purchased for a class and read with pleasure. From the first page, I hit the ground running, because this text didn't take me down blind-alleys or lead me into long-winded prose concerning the author's feelings on poetry. I learned meter, form, style, and more. When the course concluded, my poetry writing had improved as evidenced by my classmates critiques.

My 6 year old daughter just loves this book. The dragon is so endearing, he's so much like a sweet little puppy. Her favorite part is where the minstrel rubs his tummy. It's a wonderful story of friendship with a gentle feel to it. I highly recommend it to anyone!

Rick Clark's book is a treasure for anybody involved in the art of recording music. this book is full of rare, first-hand information by some of today's top engineers and producers. I wished the foreword (and it's a long foreword) would have gone on and on. If you've lost your belief in rock'n roll, Rick's foreword will make you a believer again. Rick Clark's knowledge about every aspect of making muic is vast, his passion for music and its makers is obvious. I've been recording, playing and producing music for a long time and learned a lot from this book. I go back to it frequently for inspiration and resources.

I must be fair. My first review of this book (now deleted)was written from the frustration. I had enjoyed so much The Expert Encyclopedia of Recording that, when I found this one, I didn't mind the absence of the Search Inside option. I just knew this had to be a great book. When I received my copy, I was dissapointed, not by the book being bad, which isn't, but for not have had enough information about it, as to know it actually was an updated edition of the one I already owned, with different title and cover art. The one-star rating should have been directed to the publisher (and the damage he was doing to the book), not to the content itself.
Having said that, I've read many books devoted to mixing and recording, and this one is among the best; enthusiastic and instructive as few others, well structured and covering almost everything you need to know. I repeat: if you don't own The Expert Encyclopedia, don't waste a minute and get this one. In my case, I'll use it as a gift to a good friend and I know he'll appreciate it.
Most important of all, the author has shown me he is a very nice person, passionate about his work and concerned about his readers. I'd say he's even better than his book. He deserved this review.

Fans of 1/72 scale armor rejoice! This book contains walkthroughs of builds of a Tiger II, Elefant, Tiger, Sturmtiger, and Jagdtiger. This is certainly not a beginner's book - even the easiest of the builds ends up being mostly resin after-market parts, and the later models have a large percentage of scratch-built components. The Jagdtiger includes a full interior that defies description. The pictures are better than the ones from the previous Panzer IV book - more large pictures, and the small ones are taken closer to the details, so you can still make them out. However, I would like to see more steps devoted to painting techniques, like masking and how he deals with tracks and other attached parts.

Detail pictures of an actual preserved Elefant are included in that chapter. A gallery of builds by other modelers includes a Tiger I, Tiger II and a Ferdinand interior. There is also a section on reference materials and reviews of available models.

Anyone with an interest in 1/72 scale armor or of modeling excellence in general should get this book. Any book by Alex Clark is going to find an instant slot in my bookshelf from now on.

This book is the latest title in the popular Osprey Modelling series (it's number 28). Aimed primarily at intermediate and advanced armor modelers, the book explores a number of Tiger tank variants in 1/72 scale (Braille scale, to some). Like all the books in the Osprey series, the quality of the photographs and writing is superb. Alex Clark does a wonderful job covering the intricacies of building many different Tiger versions (this is his second Osprey title) and his writing style is both instructional and easy to read. A careful reader can look forward to spending two or three hours enjoying this book and walk away with ideas for improving future Tiger projects.

This book is amazing. It is completely thorough, and contains information on any place in Monterey County that you can think of, or find on a map. It's hard to imagine that this book is the work of just one man.

If you live in or are familiar with Monterey County, you will find that this reference book reads more like a novel. It is well written and contains historical references back into the mid-1800s, including historical maps, magazines, books, and newspaper articles.

This book is a must for anyone concerned with the history of Monterey County. It would be a fantastic addition to the library of anyone interested in the place names within the county, or even people interested in the writings of Steinbeck (example: where is Tortilla Flat, and how did it get its name?).

Some other interesting examples: How did Monterey get its name? How about Hurricane Point? Point Lobos? Big Sur? Ever hear of Jamesburg? There is so much in this book that it will keep you busy and interested for years to come.

Outstanding, interesting book on history of Monterey, CA, US

Wonderful book that provides superb insights into the background and history of the Monterey County, California, including the Big Sur region.

Structured by place names, it provides eye-opening insights into the historic derivation of towns, parks, and landmarks throughout the county.

The sister book, "Place Names of Santa Cruz County" is equally useful and interesting, though significantly thinner - no doubt because its a smaller county.

Highly recommend this book for anyone exploring the Big Sur, Point Lobos and surrounding areas.

Excellent style & keen, unflinching observations of a lame city
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-13
Clark Blaise's creates vivid life on the page with impeccable style. Most of the stories occur in the 50s, 60s & 70s. Granted, much has improved since then including abolition in the 1990s of the "confessional school system" wherein public education was run along religious lines including many clergy serving as teachers and principals. Americans romanticize Montreal as the Paris of North America, however its intensely xenophobic pur-laine-quebecois* denizens elect to live the lower-working-class lifestyle relying on the province's generous unemployment and welfare system. Apart from the more English-speaking western districts, most of the city resembles a barrio in Mexico City. Militant Quebec trade-unions still run the show, and not a year goes by now without a punishing winter strike: be it the snowcleaners, bus drivers, postal workers, hospital workers, janitors, teachers, utility employees, etc. Snow piles high on the duplexes' wrought-iron exterior staircases and 3-foot brown-stained snowbanks line the sidewalk gutters from the street ploughs. Blaise describes teachers, parents and other models as they blaming poverty, unemployment, drinking, violence to on English-speaking Canadians (who in Quebec are simply called "les anglais," even though they're not British) the Protestants & the Jews. Indeed antisemitic commentary is found in most of these stories. Blaise explores the overt pressure placed on French Canadian children to eschew professionalism, internationalism and innovation, for they are the trappings of the anglais. One English-speaking mother is married to a Francophone in Pittsburgh who is fired for worksite violence & they're forced to return to Montreal to lodge with his brother Theophile whose family speaks no English. The narrator starts French school where he is reguarly whipped by nuns and priests to get back at his unruly cousin Dollard. "Tu es hotage, you're just a hostage" they tell him. The mother secretly introduces him to the English department stores and English-style food and to her former friends, English intellectuals. However by this point his mind has already been jawboned to toe the Quebec-victim line and he insists he wants to leave her friends west of boulevard St. Laurent to return to home.
Nevertheless, within this theatre-verite compassion abounds for the victims of this form of socialization. We observe English and French Canadian characters of various ages. I enthusiastically recommend this book, I couldn't put it down. *Pur-Laine Quebecois (translates as Pure Wool Quebecers) was a term that the nationalist cultural affairs minister Camille Laurin coined to refer to the racially pure French Canadians.

I picked up this book while preparing myself for the next big step in my life: moving to Montreal. I have come through a long journey around the world, lived most of my adult life in the States, and now I am heading to Canada to start everything all over.

I could relate to most of the stories in this book even though they describe a time long gone. Clark Blaise narrates through Montreal, and it is exactly what I expect it to be: The city of immigrants, and the entry port for the dreamers all over the world. Most of the characters in his sories are always on the move, in the pursuit of happiness, very much like today's reality.

Without ever being to Montreal, through Blaise's stories, I feel that I belong there. I can see the melting pot of cultures, the struggle between the English and French heritage, the love and the pain associated with living in such a different place from the rest of Noth America.

The language that Clark Blaise uses is simple and pure, and it comes through as a very pleasant read. Once I started a story I could not put the book down until I finished it.

I would highly recommend this book to everyone who intends to move or just visit Montreal, as it would be an eye-opening account of what this city stands for, all beautifully told from a first-hand experience. And if you don't intend to do either one of the above, read this book just for entertainment, personal curiosity, or growth.
