Lost architecture has long been a passion of mine: there's something so humbling and bittersweet about buildings that exist now only in memory or on a few frames of precious film. After reading great works on the subject such as Constance Greiff's LOST AMERICA or Larry Millett's LOST TWIN CITIES, I had often complained, "Why isn't there a book like this for my home state?"

I can complain no more. LOST VIRGINIA is here at last!

The book is certainly everything I could have hoped for, combining clear, informative text with beautifully reproduced photos. Hundreds of lost buildings are finally given notice and recognition, from mansions like Rosewell, Barboursville and Pratt's Castle to Rockbridge County's splendid boom hotels (including my favorite long-vanished building, Goshen's Alleghany Hotel).

I can't recommend this book more highly or think of a better gift for any fan of architecture or Virginia history. And since there are many lost buildings yet to be documented, I hope there will some day be a sequel!

Excellent Fantasy From an Early 20th Century Master

This is an extraordinary collection of fantasy (and sometimes horror) masterpieces by a much-neglected, but very influential author. Smith published mostly in WEIRD TALES in the Twenties and Thirties but also published in the occasional science fiction pulp magazine as well. This is fantasy before Tolkein and has nothing of the Arthurian mold to it. Smith writes of weird worlds, strange sorcerers, men who set out to explore the ruins of a dead city of antiquity only to unleash some horror on the world. Lovecraft is the one author who lurks in the background, but Smith is really a writer all of his own. The other factor that is important here is Smith's use of language. It's very poetic and rich, perhaps over the top at times. But this is the attraction of this kind of literature; the very language itself is what evokes these weird worlds and strange landscapes. I can highly recommend this book, especially if you are a fan of fantasy. But be forewarned: This isn't the sword-and-sorcery of Robert Jordan or David Eddings. These stories are dark are the kind that gave WEIRD TALES its power and uniqueness. The editors at Bison should be commended for bringing these stories back out into the open.

An excellent biography

In this fascinating biography, author and historian Richard B. Frank tells the story of General Douglas MacArthur, one of only nine American men to be promoted to the 5 star rank. Beginning with MacArthur's childhood in the closing days of the American West, he follows his career as he streaked across the American sky like a meteor.

Overall, I found this to be an absolutely fascinating audiobook. The author does an excellent job of presenting the real Douglas MacArthur, showing him at his most brilliant, and at his worst - falsifying reports, making tragic blunders, and so forth. And, Tom Weiner does a great job of reading the book, his voice sounding pleasant on the ear, making the 7 hours (on 6 CDs) go by quite pleanantly.

Now, everyone seems to mention the book's attempt to give what would have been MacArthur's views on current events. Admittedly, this is a rather subjective exercise. But, that said, I think that the author did do a good job of suggesting what the general would have said and thought.

Yep, I think that this is an excellent audio-biography of General MacArthur, one that should be purchased by every armchair student of World War 2.

Enthusiastically recommended especially for public library collections.

MacArthur is an audiobook biography of legendary general Douglas MacArthur, known not only for his brilliance in World War II, but also his peacetime occupation of Japan - the most successful occupation in history. Written by Vietnam veteran Richard B. Frank, MacArthur explores how a man commissioned before the Wright Brothers' first flight became one of the most adaptable and innovative military leaders, quick to adjust to new dimensions in warfare. Enthusiastically recommended especially for public library collections. 6 CDs, 7 hours, tracks every three minutes for easy bookmarking.

I finished this book a few days ago, and liked it so much that my husband thought he'd read the first few pages. He found he couldn't put it down, staying up until 3.00 in the morning reading it!

Written by the producer of the movie "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert," it's an insider's look at the challenges and amusing absurdity of trying to get a film made about an off-beat subject (drag queens) set in a remote part of the world (the Australian outback) long before anyone suspected it would be a worldwide smash hit. From Cannes to Broken Hill, the book gives a taste of what life in the movie business is like.

Very fun and entertaining - a great read!

A thinking man's guide to upland hunting

If you are looking for a how to book on woodcock and grouse hunting look elsewhere. Valdene spends a great deal of time painting a picture with very fine brush strokes. As you read you will smell the smells, feel the ground under foot and see the enviroment as it really is. This is not a book about hunting as much as it is a book about appreciating something. I have read it several times (it is an easy read) and I am sure I will read it again and again. There are technical aspects to the book. When you are finished you will know pretty much all there is to know about woodcock. From the singing grounds in March through migration in the late fall. You will definatly have an appreciation for this simple little bird.

I have used this book for teaching my graduate course for school counselors for the past five years. I find the new second edition even more wonderful than the first. It gives students a really accurate picture of what it's like to be a school guidance counselor. It covers so many topics, gives practical suggestions and background information, and does not use jargon. My students love it and it greatly contributes to the success of my course.

This book is a valuable resource for students of the New Testament. Elliott, a proponent of thoroughgoing eclecticism, does not promulgate it in this book. Rather, he addresses the field in such a way that the novice text critic is able to learn about the discipline without bias toward any approach. This book is definitely a keeper, a good investment.

A must for the text critic

This work is valuable to the serious student of the Word of God. The book presents evidence for and against various readings, explains the variants, and has great pictures. For the student who wishes to determine the correct text of the New Testament, this is a great find.

In Matthew And The Margins: A Sociopolitical And Religious Reading, Warren Carter (Pherigo Chair in New Testament at the Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City) provides readers with a new, informative, challenging, and thought provoking commentary emphasizing the roles of marginality and empire in the Gospel of Matthew. Verse by verse, Carter presents this key gospel as a counter-narrative shaping the followers of Jesus as an alternative community, resisting the authorities of both synagogue and state. Highly recommended for students of New Testament studies, Matthew And The Margins reveals and documents how the Gospel anticipates the time when Jesus' return will establish God's reign over all -- including the imperial powers of the state.

Matthew and the Margins: A Socio-Political and Religious Reading by Warren Carter is a stupendous book that I would recommend reading for anyone looking for greater depth than Mel Gibson's movie The Passion or Rick Warren's pop book The Purpose Driven Life, both of which are in vogue as of the writing of this review. The book is a verse by verse introductory commentary to the Christian Gospel of Matthew and could appeal to believer, nonbeliever and agnostic alike, although it is written from social scientific and religious viewpoints. The focus of the book is on the social marginality, or alienation, of the Christian figure Jesus as depicted in the book of Matthew. By marginality, Carter means living on the fringe of society rather than being a part of the political and religious established center of society. The author, I believe rightly, contends that the book of Matthew is a book of resistance against th Roman imperial control and the Jewish synogogue leaders of the day, although certainly not the Jewish people. The author avoids being a know it all and admits he doesn't know who wrote the book or who Matthew was. Unlike most relgious commentaries on books of the bible, this book is highly readable. Even if you just want to gain a better appreciation and understanding of the Christian story without necessarily becoming a believer, I would commend this book to you. Nonetheless, Carter points out that the book of Matthew was originally written for "consenting readers." However, Carter doesn't write what he believes his audience wants to hear - which he calls "cheap assent." True to the social marginality theme, this book probably won't be a best seller like some of the pop Christian books currently in vogue (Prayer of Jabez, Purpose Driven Life, etc.), nor will it gain the acclaim or wealth to its author such as a movie like The Passion, but it is an indelibly "experiential" book just like a good movie is. I highly commend this book to skeptic, agnostic, and believer alike. As this reviewer likewise aspires to a marginal role, I have elected to remain anonymous to hopefully allow the interested reader to find this intriguing book on his/her own possibly through this review.
