I was wonderfully surprised at how clear and direct Mr. Smith was in writing this very personal and touching book. His message is very poignant and can reach anyone who has grown up in a family. In his case it was a very well to do family, one I found interesting to read about. His ability to convey what a child understands or takes from a situation that may not have been intended is amazing. He is also able to convey a very trying upbringing without undue blame on anyone, his understanding of his family and each of their own struggle gives this book credibility. He does not wallow on being a victim but rather finds strength in repeated struggles to claim a hold on hope and love.

Painful, Candid and Funny

Smith looks at his life, with its blessings and challenges, with a great deal of tenderness and wit. The family pictures, so often absent in memoirs, add immensely to understanding the culture that gave, and took away, so many gifts from the sometimes aluring and always intriguing people who populate his book.

It has a message about survival and healing. But don't let that put you off. It is filled with fun.

I bought this for a very good friend of mine and she just loves the book. She met Beatrice once as both of us lived in Ojai, CA where Beatrice lived for many years. We have been to her house also. My friend just loved her and her particular style of art.

THE GILTED VESSEL is a beautiful book about an amazing woman and potter. Her life is more wonderful than any fiction and her pottery is exquisite. The only flaw is that it is too short; I want more.

For Theists and Non-Theists Alike

God's Hammer: The Bible and Its Critics is far more intricate and logically cohesive (despite being a collection of Dr. Clark's essays), than one would suppose from the dogmatic title. As in all his works, Clark offers the best that Christianity has to offer to the Church and the World. Its clarity is brilliant, its scope comprehensive, and consistent throughout. One does not need to be a believer or unbeliever in order to grow from the experience of having been introduced to one of this century's most noteworthy philosophers. The cohesion of his arguments and his insistance on clearly defined terms teaches the reader how to cogitate complex ideas correctly. In short, this book teaches the reader not merely about issues surrounding the subject in question but also how to think properly. The book intends to do this much. He states in the first chapter that his aim is to deal with the logic of the situation. I can think of no one else that is more fit to accomplish the task. Logic pervades the entirety of his catalogue of works. He does not deal with archaeology nor biblical criticism, but with thought--epistemology and its relation to matters of inerrancy. Being therefore, a text dealing with general issues, it is as beneficial to theists and non-theists alike. Both groups will, I believe, be relieved from the ignorance that pervades the subject. 'God's Hammer' is rationaly amiable, enough so to bring clarity and reason to this emotionaly charged subject of discussion. Ignore the title, it is an intellectually fulfilling little book, whomever you are.

God's Word: Eternal and Indestructible

One of the distinguishing features of any book written by Gordon Clark is the razor sharp precision with which he defines words. In 'God's Hammer' this is especially important due to the subject matter. The author believed that each generation of Christians has a particular doctrinal battle to fight. One of the major battles for our generation is for the inerrancy of the Bible. If this foundation is undermined then any and all Christian doctrine can be compromised of completely disgarded. Two ways that the author attempts to defend the Bible's plenary inspiration is by what the Bible itself has to say in this regard, and secondly by showing the logical consistency of the Scriptures. Mr. Clark points out that this is no easy task in our day because many are convinced that the Bible contradicts itself. Gordon Clark is well aware that at the end of the day, that God by His spirit must reveal to any individual the absoulute truthfulness of His Word.(Theologians have called this the internal witness of the Holy Spirit of God), and under His blessing will use our attempts to expound and explain its meaning to unbelievers. By verbal inspiration the Bilble means that they are both the words of the prophets and apostles(those who wrote the Word of God)and God's words at one and the same time. The author writes on page 10 "between Moses and God there was an inner union ,an identity of purpose, a co-operation of will , such that the word Moses wrote were God's own words and Moses own words at the same time." For believers who may have trouble understanding this, there are other parallels in Scripture. Take the incarnation for example, Christ is both God and man in one person at the same time. This is a great mystery no doubt, but it is true nonetheless. The chapter the Bible as truth is illuminating and brilliant. Clark's careful definition of terms are invaluable. To communicate effectively we must certain that the words we are using are understood by our hearers, and that they have the exact meaning that we intend(that presupposes that we have an accurate understanding of the terms that we are using). The importance of this book and the doctrine of the Bible's inerrancy can be seen in this comment by Gordon Clark on p.58 " If the Bible in a hundred different passages is mistaken in its account of itself , why should the rest of its message be accepted as true? If the prophets spoke falsely when they said that their words were the words of God.. if they were thus in error, what confidence can we have in anything else they said." Therefore, if the Bible is not infallible, how can we have confidence in any of its teachings? God's Hammer would be a great weapon in any Christians arsenal in defending the very foundation upon which all of their beliefs rest.

Volume 7 of the "Kingdom in the West: The Mormons and the American Frontier", Gold Rush Saints is an extensively researched history drawing heavily upon documents and primary sources to chronicle the role that Mormons played and the effect they had in California during the Gold Rush era. The text is scholarly in tone yet accessible to lay readers as it presents exciting stories of travel, cooperation, success, and destitution. Focusing especially upon influential and charismatic Mormon personalities, the hardships they endured and the legacies they contributed to, Gold Rush Saints is a welcome and seminal contribution to American and California history shelves.

Mormon social and political confrontations

From 1846-1857 Mormons shaped events in California: they were the first American settlers of San Francisco. Narrative history blends with documentary accounts on California Mormon history: first-person accounts of early pioneers provide new insights on gold rush history and experiences. Chapters survey social and political controversies of the time between Mormons and between Mormons and other groups, examine the roles they played in settling California and overcoming the state's isolation, and include insights from the pioneers themselves. An excellent addition to California history.

This beautifully written masterpiece by Billy C. Clark captures the innocence of a child and the childs love of animals. The tender and eloquent way that Billy C. Clark weaves the words is that of a master. This should be a "must read" book for all students in elementary and high school. The way that Mr. Clark deals with life and death, if only we could be so lucky to explain it to our own children that way. This is only one of the many books available by Mr. Clark. He is a gifted master and poet and his books should fill all shelves of your home.

This was the collection of stories that helped me find my voice as a writer. While reading Grass Fires, it became clear to me how important it is to tell your story in a patient and relaxed manner. Let the reader quietly observe the story's characters as the events unfold; nothing dramatic or spectacular or shocking needs to occur to hook the reader, so long as your voice is honest and observant. I was amazed, and still am, at Mr. Gerber's ability to tell a simple story that, I know as a writer, is extremely difficult to pull off. These are simple stories about everyday people, going about their everyday lives, while dealing with those little complications that keep us reading.

Welcome to Brainard -- You're really going to like it here.

I have read, re-read, and re-read Grass Fires. It is one of the few short-story collections where I have savored every sentence. Each story captures you from the first paragraph, drawing you deeper and deeper into each character as Dan Gerber peels away the layers. The descriptions are crisp and unique. Dan Gerber, I am sorry to say, is one of America's best kept secrets.

P.S. Grass Fires is currently out of print, but well worth the search. And, no, I will not sell my copy!

We started off getting one of this series for a vacation car trip. Now we have collected eight more for any and all trips in the car, and for our enjoyment at home. I put this in when asking the kids to help with chores and clean their room. We also love listening to this instead of watching tv. We love the Explorers cd. The stories are very exciting and the narration is clear and very interpretive. I think my kids are learning and enjoying learning. I have to admit I have learned a few things I didn't know about early explorers too.

Engaging art, timeless stories

I like this book for an introduction to Greek mythology. It tells only 15 stories, but each is lavishly illustrated and written with lively dialogue. The vocabulary is deep English, with words like halcyon, burnished, citadel, shyster, and masonry, so your child will need a dictionary nearby or you the parent can read aloud and explain. The titles and manner of telling help make these stories more accessible (understandable) than some other Greek mythologies.

A great book for introducing Greek mythology

The book's colorful illustrations and straight forward text makes this book great for a child's first introduction to mythology. I read this outloud to my 6 year old and she loved it. She could have read it by herself but she would not have been able to understand who the characters were. There is a glossary of gods and goddesses in the back but the stories themselves pretty much assume you know who they are. If you are buying this for a young child like mine make sure that you know the stories (or read them ahead of time) as they are still Greek mythology and some stories are violent. Also, some of the stories drag on for a couple of paragraphs after what "feels" like should be the end of the story. Overall, a great book and definate must have.

"Grieving With Poetry" is an incredibly insightful and personal collection of moving poetry from Ms. Clark. Anyone experiencing the loss of a parent or other loved one will "find themselves" in these poems. They are touching, moving, and beautiful all at once. I highly recommend this to everyone as a wonderful way to experience the work of this very gifted poet. It's a trip down a road well worth the traveling.
