Dealing with the New Perspective and the Federal Vision

I have the pleasure of studying under these men at WSC. So, this review might be slightly biased. But, despite my bias, I am convinced that this volume offers a significant challenge to the New Perspective(s) on Paul and the Federal Vision. The contributors do a wonderful job introducing the controversy (although the mention of N. Shepherd and other "fringe" takes on Justification could have been left out, these movements don't really seem to have the popular affect that the NP and the FV do). But they do an even better job providing a significant challenge. I, personally, found the exegetical arguments, by Drs. Duguid Estelle and Baugh, to be the most interesting. But, the historical and the systematic arguments are also very persuasive.
What sets this volume apart from other books on the NP and FV is that it spends a good deal of time on how these issues relate to pastoral/practical ministry. This perspective takes these lofty theological arguments and brings them down to ground level.
For anyone struggling with the challenge of the NP or FV, this is essential reading.

DR. Clark's book helped me rethink my approach to a number of content areas allowing me to clarify a better way to convey concepts and to increase student readiness to learn. One beauty of the book is its variety. There are so many different types of ideas and activities. They help the educator stretch, get out of a rut and combat educator burnout.

Hugh Williamson (Ezra, Nehemiah, Word Biblical Commentary) has contributed the first commentary of three on Isaiah 1-27 for the ICC series in Isaiah 1-5 (T. & T. Clark) at the same time that John Goldingay and David Payne have covered the back end (Isaiah 40-55 Vol 1: A Critical and Exegetical Commentary (International Critical Commentary) (Hardcover) (International Critical Commentary). At 650 pages (compared to 900 pages total for the two 40-55 volumes), this is going to be one whopper of coverage for one book (seven volumes at $90-110.00 per retail).

The Best Commentary on Matthew Money Can Buy (But You Better Have A lot of It!

Matthew 1-7 is an elegantly written exegetical study of Matthew's Gospel. In the introduction, Davies and Allison contend that this gospel was written somewhere between 70-100 AD, and that it cannot be pinned down to a specific genre. They do not stand with the scholars who teach that Matthew is historically all the way through. But neither can they agree with those on the far left who think that Matthew is completely fictional. They observe that Matthew has elements of biography, myth, history, and apocalyptic.
They state that the genealogy in Matthew 1 was deliberately crafted by Matthew to make the theological point that Jesus was of the lineage of David. They also stress forefully that even though the story of Christ's birth in Matthew 1:18-2:20 is powerful and evocative, most of it must be regarded as myth. They think it highly unlikely that the Magi would have known about the birth of the Jewish baby reputed to be a messiah figure.
Instead, Davies and Allison work hard to show that the infancy stories of Jesus incorporate heavily from haggadic stories about the life of Moses.
The Beatitudes in Matthew 5 borrow heavily from Old Testament texts, and the mountain setting of the Sermon on the Mount also recalls the life and ministry of Moses.
I should also say that there are few things related to the book of Matthew that Davies and Allison haven't thought deeply about. I am much more optimistic about the historicity of the material constituting the infancy narratives, and the authors even admit that King Herod's words and deeds in Matthew are consistent with what we know of his character (or lack of thereof).
In the introduction, I was hoping for more of a discussion on the theology of Matthew, but the authors felt strongly about saving much of this discussion for the end of the commentary, after they have hadmore of a chance to grasp Matthew's theology.
Though I might demur at someof the specifics within the body of the commentary. I found it to be so well written and so engrossing that I didn't care. I realize that this is a very expensive three volume commentary set, but this is a good example of getting what you pay for. If you can spring the cash, buy this, because it will repay you again and again over the course of your ministry.

A magnificent commentary on Mathew that students, pastors and scholars will want to add to their libraries. Along with John Noland's and Craig S. Keener's commentaries, this commentary is at the top of all commentaries on Mathew. It offers the best exegetical, hermeneutical, critical, textual, literary and historical commentary, based on the Greek text that is yet available. It is indeed very technical and scholarly but it is aimed at the more advanced students of the word of God.
The commentary is divided into three volumes and treats in detail, verse by verse the gospel of Mathew. The commentary starts with a lengthy introduction that deals with the authorship, general structure, date, sources and literary characteristics of Mathew's gospel. Then the authors continue with a sound systematic commentary on the Greek text, briliantly engaging the current scholarship on many critical issues.
The authors see much of Mathew's message as being eschatological in flavor and present an historical yet apocalyptical Jesus. The commentary is undertaken from a historical-critical perspective and is completed with canon and textual critical insights. Extensive explicatory footnotes are very helpful.
Because of the quality of its scholarship and the many references and quotes about it in many other commentaries and theological texts, I fully recommend this commentary.

Mike Clark's book is itself a "cultural treasure." It provides beautifully clear and succinct explanations of how to navigate the Internet and the Web specifically so as to harvest the wealth of material that is of interest to humanistic scholars and the culturally committed public alike. Mike is not a computer geek by trade; he's a university professor of humanities, and his knowledge and experience as a scholar, writer, and teacher accrue to make this book highly readable and easy to use. It has an excellent index and table of contents, and the addition in this new edition of an interactive CD-ROM, with narration by Mike, means that even the Web novice can use this book to locate and explore the riches of Cyberspace--literally within minutes. I recommend this book highly to anyone who wants to use the Web to access materials in the arts and humanities...and especially to those folks who don't have the time, patience, or interest to plow through lots of irrelevant and confusing technical details. This book is fun to use! I'm giving it as a Christmas gift to friends who are writers, readers, teachers, and researchers, in particular to those who see themselves as technobumblers and who need this kind of friendly guide to assuage their Cyberphobia. Note: It even leads one to Amazon.com, and a wonderful new way to find and buy books

I happen to have met another health care specialist who has tried Dr. Clark's theories on HIV with several of her HIV/AIDS patients. This other practicioner told me personally that she has witnessed the exact same results that Dr. Clark reports. I think other people with HIV or AIDS ought to be giving Dr. Clark's theories an honest try. Maybe they'd get the same results too.

Christian has been part of the Kinncaid family for years. She helps raise Brayden's daughter. Christian has been in love with Brayden for a long time. Recently Brayden discovered his feelings for Christian go beyond friendship. As Christian and Brayden try to work through their new found feelings, a terrible evil slithers it's way back into Christian's life. She thought she was safe, she thought it was in the past, but she was wrong. Threats turn to violence and Christian is attacked. Her secrets are slowly being revealed. Christian tries desperately to keep herself and her loved ones safe. With the Kinncaid's help she may succeed.
The suspense and emotion in Deadly Obsession is over the top. Very intense and often times dark, I simply could not put it down. I was on pins and needles the whole time. The dialogue among the characters is so realistic I feel like I'm in the scene with them. Deadly Obsession is extremely emotional. Anyone sensitive to reading violence towards women should be aware that Deadly Obsession contains many scenes and recollections of brutality Christian suffered. Brayden and Christian's relationship overflows with love, passion and friendship. Deadly Obsession is a story with a lot of pain, but it is also a story about healing, self preservation, love, and acceptance. Deadly Obsession is heart-wrenching and heart-warming .

A chance encounter brings Taylor into the Kinncaid home. Taylor thinks Gavin is bossy and overbearing. Gavin thinks Taylor is stubborn and contrary. Yet the attraction between them is undeniable. As Taylor and Gavin begin to tentatively form their relationship, a dangerous and twisted foe from Taylor's and her son Ryan's past threatens to destroy all of their lives. The only way Taylor, Gavin, and Ryan will be able to move on and find happiness is if their evil adversary is stopped.
I really enjoyed Deadly Ties. Jaycee Clark has a way with words that draws me into the story completely. The sexual anticipation between Gavin and Taylor is intense. Each time they share a "first" I feel butterflies taking flight my belly. It is so romantic and hot. In addition, the warmth and compassion of the Kinncaid family shines through. Another great Kinncaid Brothers tale, Deadly Ties is an emotion-filled, exciting story, combining suspense and passion perfectly
