Excellent treatment of what education is really about
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-30
This collection of Clark's writings -- including the transcript of his appearance before Congress to oppose the formation of the Dept of Education in 1926 -- is an excellent treatment of what education is really all about. His support for learning ones "facts" as a pre-requisite to "original" thought is a striking rebuke to those wedded to a fanciful notion that school's are to foster an atmosphere in which the student is left to his own thoughts. First let him learn what has come before. Again, the emphasis on teachers learning their subject rather than educational methods stands against the current trend, as does his insistence that in education we do not seek to turn out children like automobiles (all alike in their thinking), but rather Clark exalts individuality in education and thus opposes a state-run educational system intended to produce uniformity. Finally, Clark cannot help tying together his overarching philosophy that all we do must ! be to the Glory of God, not the exaltation of man, and in this context he sets a framework upon which true wisdom (not mere learning) can be constructed.

Education May Not Be What You Think It Is

Dr. Clark offers a truly coherent philosophy of education. He debunks the myth that education is the largely ineffective and irrelevant social construct that it so often appears to be when it is dispensed by those who aren't so logical as Clark. In doing so, he offers hope to those who wish to be educated and who wish to transmit their education to others.

New Standard Intro to the Subject
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2006-09-09
Chadwick's Early Church is still recommended, but Clark's book is a fantastic companion to get a quick, organized, detailed and accurate understanding of the position of Christians, in all their variety, in Roman society.

She underscores all of the main issues relating to the trainistion from Jew to Christian in the sense of societal perception, heretics, gnostics, pagans, etc. All top notch and very up to date bibliography, which is great for further study.

She has a few minor erros in dating, and glosses over some of the nuances of Jewish monotheism, sacrifice and conversion, but this is now, in my view, one of the best books to get on the subject. And its slim size adds attraction to students who are assigned 14 books for a semester in one class!

Excellent and readable

Gillian Clark has written an excellent book. It is highly readable and will be of interest to those seeking to get to the bottom of essential religious debates which occurred in the early centuries AD. The book also transports the reaer very much into th epsychology of the period, with its intensive treatment of such difficult phenomena as martyrdom and asceticism.

Clark is an unpretentious prose writer and does her best to simplify advanced discussion with pithiness. This is an effective strategy and enhances the readability of the book. For anyone seriously interested in ingesting alot of importnat material quickly, this is the place to go: a top class ancient historian is the guide and she provides ample referencing to enable further enquiry. Clark, though, is not afraid to write provocatively: her thinly veiled criticism of Ramsay Macmullen at one point is interesting.

If you can't see youorself lasting the course of the epic Chadwick/Frend contributions on the early church, this is a very viable alternative staring place and is more user friendly to boot.

Wonderful Architectural Apologia
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-12
This is a small, exciting, book that packs in big ideas. To paraphrase Mr. Clark, building rises to the level of "architecture" when it atones for the loss nature suffers through human intervention by replacing nature with something that can be seen as beautiful and necessary...Anything short of this high standard is "only building." This book, then, explains and illustrates the architecture of Clark and Menefee through fifteen projects (a few unbuilt) which were undertaken before the firm dissolved in 1999.

The layout of the book is beautiful. Floor plans are included as well as architectural drawings. There is one quibble: all of the photos are black and white. This makes the book very much in vogue with what is perceived as "high art" - but the wonderful color photo on the jacket makes one hungry for more.

A well designed and beautiful book of the competitions and completed built work of this well known firm. The text is readable and thoughtful, and superb and restrained graphics accompany numerous black and white photographs of many private houses closed to the public.

A Second Home Run!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-21
Editors Connors and Hilger have succeeded once again in producing more of the ultimate Clark Ashton Smith collection of fantastic prose. As in volume one, they have corrected the tales using Smith's original manuscripts, published here in chronological order according to when they were written, not by subject or date of publication. At times the changes are minor, but in some instances the publisher forced Smith to butcher his own work or, even worse, altered the text without Smith's permission. Now they are restored to original form, the way the author meant them to be!

The editors have also provided histories of the writing and publishing of all of the stories, a Smith bibliography and an alternate ending to "The Return of the Sorcerer."

I eagerly await the next installment in this 5-part collection, as this is the definitive Smith, in many cases unseen since the author first wrote the tales herein!

volume 2 contains two of the greatest weird tales ever written
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-10
although not all of clark ashton smith's weird tales are classics, almost all of them are worth reading. his best stories are terrific. this volume contains two of his very best; "THE CITY OF THE SINGING FLAME" and "THE TESTAMENT OF ATHAMMAUS". both stories rank with (smith's good friend) h.p. lovecraft's finest. "THE CITY OF THE SINGING FLAME" in particular is one of the most devastating short stories i've ever read. it will knock you out. many such stories (in volumes like this) promise weirdness, this one really delivers. it may also say something (by implication) about the source of weird tales in general. "THE TESTAMENT OF ATHAMMAUS" on the other hand, is a hilarious account of an executed criminal who won't stay dead. many of the other tales in this volume are quite good as well. CLARK ASHTON SMITH at his best is one of the greatest writers of weird tales that ever lived. this volume contains some of his very best. don't miss it.

An Amazing Commentary on the Greek Text of Romans
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-16
This commentary on Romans by Cranfield is by far the best ever written on the Greek text of Romans. His approach is to deal with each problem of interpretation by listing and describing the various options, then analyzing each in turn until he gives the reasons for his own conclusions. While you may not agree with his argumentation, you know that he has done a full analysis and presented good reasons for his views. Get both volumes, and forget the "shorter" one-volume edition.

One of the finest exegetical commentaries on a N.T. book!

This is a model commentary and one of the best exegetical commentaries ever written on a Greek text. For good exposition, this is an excellent help and resource. (Much better than the abridged version, obviously!) Get BOTH volumes. This should be in every pastor's and Bible student's library.

Any one human can resonate with this work of verse. Superficiality has no place on the pages of this book, nor between the lines, except to be scorned. Despite the mandatory disclaimer at the beginning, this book is for real. Kevyn made sure of that. Although completely original, one cannot help notice the Bukowski - Morrison nuances in style and substance.

After reading this book of poetry, prose and free verse in almost one sitting, I feel as if I've been on a ride along side the author, backstage pass and all. No holds are barred. As Grateful Dead Lyricist Robert Hunter said, Kevyn's head is filled with interesting monsters. A very eloquent ride indeed.

Paul Argenti's Corporate Communication: A new perspective
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-01
I have been using Paul Argenti's Corporate Communication for my Management and Corporate Communication class and find the book very systematic and comprehensive. It provides students with a new perspective of professional external and internal communication that a company needs to build its image and identity. Especially, the down-to-earth cases for discussions such as, the Adolph Coors Company and the 60 minutes CBS program, and the case of United Technologies, are perfect application of knowledge to practice. More significant is that those problems are universal and might occur to any organization. And this is credited to Paul Argenti's long experience of teaching management and corporate communication. I really enjoy using this book.

Exceedingly Thorough and Strong
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-21
Though not as current as some other texts dealing with corporate communication, Argenti's book is still the best. It combines both theory and practice, never letting one dominate the other; instead, it combines them, letting their merged strengths shine. It's similar to Guerrilla PR: Wired by Michael Levine, which also utilizes the practice of public relations to great effect in examining how to attain the objective.

Argenti uses several brilliant case histories in his examination of corporate communication. This text is both informative and useful. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who's involved in the field.

The collaboration work of Kenneth R. Gray (eminent Scholar Chair Professor of International Management, School of Business and Industry, Florida A&M University-Tallahassee), Larry A. Frieder (Eminent Scholar Chair Professor of Financial Services, School of Business and Industry, Florida A&M University-Tallahassee), and George W. Clark, Jr. (Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior and Ethics, School of Business & Industry, Florida A&M University), Corporate Scandals: The Many Faces Of Greed focuses on the nature of corporate scandals, offering the reader a brief history of business scandals, addressing issues of corporate malfeasance including fraud, regulatory laxity, and theft; governmental attempts to address corporate crime, the pervasive extent of executive impropriety and vice, recommendations for dealing with corporate illegalities in the future, and reflections on the nature and impact of corporate scandals on the business community and the general American public. Corporate Scandals should be on the reading list of corporate CEO and mandatory reading for every student in a "Business Ethics" class in every college and university Business School in the country.

Renewed focus on ethics may yet save capitalism

I am a business school graduate and have owned my own business for 12 years. I am also a former investor in mutual funds and equities. In the year 2000, my wife and I lost confidence in those investments in part due to the trickle of corporate scandals that had already begun to surface. Soon after, the trickle became a flood and I think we have still only seen the tip of the proverbial iceberg. In Corporate Scandals: The Many Faces of Greed, the authors explore the root causes of this breakdown in ethics and trust and put our current crisis in perspective by documenting and analyzing similar scandals in history. The book reads easily and yet is well researched, footnoted & indexed, making it an excellent textbook for university ethics courses. I feel that if every business school in America would incorporate this work (or a similar one) into their required ethics courses, it could help to restore integrity in American business persons and confidence in American business.

I don't normally read Romance books, but this one caught my eye because it was also listed as Suspense. It sounded like a good, light read for the beach. What a great little book! It was fun to read, very entertaining, very well written, well researched, and was exciting. I usually guess endings and did not for this book. I would highly recommend this book. The balance between suspense and sex is perfect! I'm looking forward to Helma Clark's next book.

History and fiction working together.

From the very beginning this story relies on ancient Celtic history as its foundation. It brings to the present a religion from distant past and creates characters that are mulitifaceted and frightfully believabe in some cases. It certainly is a timely tome as it could happen in our real world today. A quiet oceanside city must face a challenge to save not only itself, but the world. Make sure you have time to curl up and read. You may not want to put this one down.
