Many books have been written about Warren Buffet's way of picking the right stocks at the right time, and many audio programs have been recorderd, but this one is the most sound, concise and actionable. There is another book on this subject: "The Warren Buffet Way" by Robert G. Hagstrom, but it misses the important topics laid out in the "Buffettology". These major topics are: what are the differences between a "consumer monopoly" and a "commodity"; how to calculate the rate of return over a long period of time before choosing the investment; and so on. There is another great book about Warren Buffet and his investment strategy - "Buffet: The Making of an American Capitalist" by Roger Lowenstein, but it better describes Mr. Buffet's biography and his relations with family, friends and the society, rather than how did he evaluate the companies. But please note that "Buffettology" is not a replacement of the book by Roger Lowenstein, I highly recommend both of them, but get the printed book Roger Lowenstein, not an audio version. The autio version of Roger Lowenstein masterpies is severely abridged and strips all the important details. What you can omit is the book by Robert G. Hagstrom, above mentioned.

I would recommend this abridged audio version of the "Buffettology" instead of the printed book. The audio version discloses the most important factors of Mr. Buffet's investment principles pretty well. Some of the background information is available on free letters to shareholders and Mr. Buffet's lectures, but you might not want to crawl thought all these; you might want to save time and just listen the "Buffettology" audio or read the "Buffettology" book, where all this information is perfectly summarized and laid out in a consistent way.

Buffettology is an amazingly comprehensive and complete text on everything you ever wanted to know about Buffett's analytical stock-picking tools.
The book is divided into two parts. The first is a detailed overview of the qualifications that Buffett takes into account when examining a company in order to determine its merit as an investment. The second part expands on these qualifications by providing step-by-step instruction on the actual mathematical equations that Buffett uses both to determine if a company satisfies his criteria and to determine if that company's stock is selling at a reasonable price. Do not be daunted by the math; it is actually rather simple, and the author provides sufficiently concrete examples so that you can easily perform the same sequential procedure when analyzing companies on your own.
If you are at all intrigued by how the man possessing the title of "World's Greatest Investor" picks his stocks, then you MUST read this book!

A stunning simple and in-depth analysis of the working of Buffet's brain presented by Mary Buffet in her case by case detailed study on how Buffet did his investments. It' so simple that the beauty of compounding power in investment manifests its own way; the first thing is to figure out what are return on equity and annual rate of return growth rate quantitively and also qualitatively understand the prospect of underlying business- which is the one I think most difficult to learn because one can hardly match Buffet's insight and experience.

This book remind me of Peter Lynch's books- looks so simple- but much better in providing numerical approaches which I could use in daily investments.

A great book for any elected union official (or a candidate seeking to become a union official.)

This book takes a clear look at effectiveness of unions from soup to nuts... from priorities in organizing non-union employees to focusing on priorities once a union is in place. It contains frank and pragmatic discussion and themes that I believe would be useful for union leaders in making the most of whatever circumstances in which they find themselves.

Clear, concise and well-researched

A smart and savvy look at the way unions can help in managing our lives. Dr. Clark adds a touch of class to the usual ho-hum union research books. This one is a keeper and one that every student in labor studies and industrial relations should keep on their bedside for moments of clarity in which unionization becomes the clear answer in their lives.

I read this book just before starting an MBA course called "Basic Statistics". I found the book to be clear, intuitive and it certainly covered all topics we discussed in class. In my opinion, this book presents an easy way to understand Statistics by applying them to real business situations. I still use it as reference at work. Highly recommendable for business people interested in Statistics and with no much background in Math (just make sure you know how to add)

BY RIGHT OF CONQUEST is a great book. It tells the story of a boy who is shipwrecked on a island where the people think he is a god. When Cortez comes to fight the people of the islands the boy is caught in the fray. This story is a great book full of excitment like in the middle of battles or running away in a boat. Even a point where the boy must escape from being sacrificed. This is a wonderful book which I encourage many to read.

Warning- this is NOT the book-it's a study guide.

This is a great study guide for the hardcover book. It contains numerous maps, questions, and vocabulary lists, BUT do not order this if you think you've found a much cheaper version of the hardcover-that is not the case.

A book of truth!

This book has become an instant favorite with me. I really love how Mr. Henty shows the true reasons behind Cortez's conquest, and not the pack of lies that we usually hear in history. The thing that got my attention was the Henty made it clear that both sides had their good and bad intentions. The Mexicans wanted peace to reign but yet they exercised brutal human sacrifices to their gods. The Spanish wanted to spread the Gospel to the world but they were noted for their brutality in war. There are no reasons to search for good or bad guys, as the hero in this story is torn between the two sides. If you really want to read how history should be written, read this book.

This book goes through the Bible historically and gives you the latest in textual and archeological research. It is an easy read, and it seems written for mass consumption, but it is not unscholarly. It is for true students of the Holy Scriptures and not for people who think the holy books are magic words from God. It is a sane, yet reverent approach to the study of ancient literature which we believe is inspired by God. It is NOT fundamentalist. If you are serious about Bible studies, then I recommend this volume whole-heartedly.

Introduction to Biblical Studies

Review Date: 2001-12-14
This is not a scholarly book in the sense that it's not part of any visible academic debate. It does not treat any particular issue in enough depth to be so.

It is, rather, a sort of textbook. Call it "Introduction to Academic Thought About the Bible." Following the order of the biblical texts and with detours to discuss such topics as the pseudepigrapha and the inter-testamental period, the book lays out basic issues of historical, archaeological and textual biblical criticism, such as, for instance, the idea of the J, E, D and P-authored components of the Old Testament, or the question to what extent the books of Joshua and Judges present different narratives of the conquest of Palestine by the Israelites, and what archaeology has to say about that conquest.

The book does not discuss theology (at least, not modern theology). If you're an inerrantist, this book is not what you're looking for. If you're reading the Bible for the first time, this is probably too much information and not the kind you need to help you follow the narrative. Though it has a section of color plates (and black and white photos throughout) and a limited number of maps, this is not an atlas. This is also not a debunk-the-Bible book -- mainstream believers in the inspired nature of the Biblical should by and large have no objection to the contents of this book.

But if you're generally familiar with the Bible, and interested in increasing your knowledge (in particular, I would suggest reading this alongside a reading of the Bible itself, a method to which the organization of this book lends itself) about Bible studies, I recommend this book without reservation.

Indispensible for meaningful interpretation (review of previous edition)

This is a brilliantly but clearly written book, one that will make your experience of the Bible incalculably richer. The first part provides both an overview and more detailed archealogical and historical information on the presence of the early Israelites in the area of Canaan. There is also relevant and compellingly written analysis of the literary and cultural environment. All of this information allows you to see the Hebrew scriptures for the monumental literary and philosophical achievement they represent. Then, there are commentary and background information for every separate book of the Hebrew scriptures and New Testament. Whether you practice one of the three religions of the book (Judaism, Christianity, or Islam), are a student of history and culture, or just want further insight into this most influential of books, you will find the Cambridge Companion an invaluable source for deeper understanding. I teach humanities at the largest private college in the country, and I find the presentation in this book to be clear enough for the least-interested students and complex enough to support the best and brightest. I have also used the material here to discuss religion with my family members and other practictioners--everyone can get something deeply worthwhile from this book.

This is a great book for anyone who is a fan, but also a real treat for people living in the metro-Detroit area, as a few of the celebrities asked are local TV and radio stars. She wrote to a lot of people over the years and has a great collection of stars' heroes, from Soupy Sales to Les Paul and of course Davy Jones! It's neat to find out who inspired the celebrities to be who they are today.

What a great concept for a book!

Mary Guerra is an authority on fandom as she is a member of a fanclub or two herself. I know this since she belongs to the fanclub I run for Davy Jones, Davy Devotees. Though the concept of fandom is normally perceived as being something the nonfamous possess, Mary spent years contacting various celebrities asking them just who they consider themselves a fan of and what fanclubs they would join if they could! She received personal responses from legends in the field of entertainment like RoseMarie and Phyllis Diller to Les Paul, inventor of the electric guitar, Richard Petty, of racing fame, columnist, Liz Smith and "Mr. Hockey" Gordie Howe. Shirley Jones, Peter Noone and Mary's personal favorite, Davy Jones of The Monkees, are just a few of the many other highlighted celebrities. If you've been a fan of anyone at anytime, this book gives you an interesting look at who those we admire actually admire. At times the featured celebrities provide laughs and at other times intriguing revelations. Overall this is a fun read with a lot of heart!

This is a gorgeous collection -- a tribute to Gable's career and the author's amazing talents. This book belongs in your collection.

Perspective from the Get-Go: Technical Names for Multivariate Analysis Methods Decoded for Your Concrete Understanding
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-06
I'm writing about the 2nd ed. (1990), but if you landed here, I think what I have is of value for later editions too. The book is fantastic. There are a myriad of technical terms for various kinds of multivariate analyses. The average person has no idea what the names mean -- or how to choose between them! To be able to DO anything (right, anyway) you need a CONCRETE understanding. Such is what this book provides. Right off the bat, the book tells you -- not only what kind of data each technique requires -- but what questions you might ask (and want answered) for such data. So, in a mere 4 pages -- near the beginning! -- you get 1 or 2 paragraphs on each of these: factor analysis, discriminant analysis, cluster analysis, multiple linear regression, principal components analysis, and more. You'll know what these techniques require as input (what kinds of data situations) and what they assume the question(s) is/are that you want answered -- already concrete, already good understanding of the differences of the formerly cryptic technique names in a mere 4 pages! I have seen no other book do this. The rest of the book is nearly as effective in the decoding of other details of the multivariate analyses. In short, start with this book, because therein you will be way way ahead in acquiring a perspective on multivariate analyses with little effort. Go to any other book(s) first and you may eventually develope a perspective -- only by accident, that is with little author help -- after a long hard road. Get your perspective from the get-go instead -- with this book.

Excellent, low-key intro to many techniques

While this book will not teach you all you need to know about any of the techniques to be an expert, it WILL teach you enough to read research, and to learn what the various techniques do. The mathematical level is moderate, and the emphasis is on practical applications. Highly recommended for grad students in the social sciences

Only a limited knowledge of statistics is assumed!
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 1998-08-22
Often, students and researchers need to perform multivariate statistical analyses on their data. Unfortunately, a lack of mathematical training prevents many from taking advantage of advanced techniques, in part, because books focus on the theory and neglect explaining how to perform and interpret multivariate analyses on real-life data. Computer-Aided Multivariate Analysis is a welcome exception, helping students choose the appropriate analyses for their data, carry them out and interpret the results. Only a limited knowledge of statistics is assumed and geometrical and graphical explanations are used to explain what the analyses do. However the basic model is always given and assumptions are discussed. In this edition the computer emphasis is enhanced by the inclusion of three additional statistical packages written for the personal computer. The authors also discuss data entry, database management, data screening, data transformations, as well as multivariate data analysis. This third edition contains a new chapter on log-linear analysis of multi-way frequency tables.

Are you ready for a new kind of hero? Would you like to have faith in the human soul again? Then you need to read "The Cottonwoods of Titus Smithing." The author presents to the reader an opportunity to connect with the salt of the earth - the hard workers of America. Through the use of vivid imagery and decriptive wording - you can visualize the "adventure" of Henry. The sentence structure is unique, but truly fits the characters he is protraying. There are moments when you'll laugh out loud, and others when you'll snicker to yourself. You find that you're crossing your fingers that everything will work out okay. I highly recommend you give this book a reading!
