This review book is formated in such a way that I can actually help my child with homework. I go directly to the section she's learning, and can quickly review the section that's current to her learning needs. She and I can do the reviews together and this wouldn't be possible without this book. I especaily like that I don't have to refer to hundreds of pages before being able to help my child.

This is an excellent refresher for Statistics, laid out logically and with ideas clearly illustrated graphically. Published by Barron's, these "Forgotten" books are nicely oriented toward the professional who needs to brush up on a subject in order to make competent decisions and communicate intelligently.

"Statistics and Probability" is one of those amazing sciences that we take for granted from childhood, but the more we think about it (as we get older, regrettably), it begins to dawn on us that this is the catalyst of many mysterious processes, such as the forces of life overcoming entropy. Science has rather recently discovered that there is really no such thing as "randomness", with the advent of Chaos Theory bringing down the walls of the last bastion of that idea. Statistics and Probability then become the focus of means by which some form of Higher Intelligence manages to do its business under our noses without us having a clue as to its presence!

This is an outstanding book for any professional that finds himself immersed if not overwhelmed by an increasingly quantitative world. This book provides you an excellent foundation in basic statistics that can readily allow you to build upon by studying more advanced stats if you care to. Thus, this book is a good stepping stone for Intuitive Biostatistics if you want to easily deepen your knowledge of statistics and care to understand better medical studies.

The book is subdivided in two parts. The first part teaches you the basics. The second part is a good reference section often covering some more advanced material.

I also recommend the other two books in this "Forgotten" series if you care to refresh other math areas: Forgotten Algebra and Forgotten Calculus.

Excellent Supplemental Text to a variety of stats courses!

Like most students,I was not looking forward to my Introductory Statistics course. However, knowing that I had to do it I made certain to purchase several supplemental texts to aid in clarification when the textbook failed to do so. Although the title says 'Forgotten Statistics' it does serve as an aid to those who are entirely new to the subject as it presents the concepts in a logical fashion( the book is divided in two sections one for concepts and problems the other with definitions). This book has remained in my backpack the entire semester. So much, in fact, that I find myself going over problems during my liesure time. This book has served me rather well. It has not required lots of additional time in learning and problem solving. My GPA and I are happy about that.

The story was mainly told in the forest. The main characters in the story was Franklin. The minor characters were bear, rabbit, fox beaver skunk. The theme was that this book would be that school is alot of fun and don't be afraid to go there. School is a good learning experience. The style would be that the author has a picture on every page and it has friends playing and having fun on every page.

Our 5 yr old loves the entire series. She reads them aloud.

All of the Franklin books deal with something a child might face. They are written so it is easy for children to conect with their new found friend, and thats just what Franklin will become. I teach children and Franklin is the most asked for of all the books we have. His stories are great and children learn from his experiences.

This is a very touching book. It shows emotions of what happens when a close friend moves away. Frankin takes it out on everybody. But in the end his father figures out that it was Otter's moving that upset Franklin. His father told him how they can still stay in contact with each other. Franklin sent Otter a puzzle that he made.

Everything seems to go wrong until he finally has a relieving talk with dad and realizes that he hasn't really lost his buddy, but that their relationship simlpy has to take on a new dimension. This is yet another greatly illustrated, wonderful book in the Franklin series, which helps teach life's lessons and morals to our young ones.

I can't help but feel a bit sad, though, that his grandparents can't make it. This is for ages around 4-6.

In this tale, Franklin, his friends and his family deal with Thanksgiving. The story is simple and to the point. The message is sharing and helping each other. As with the other Franklin books, the illustaations are great, very detailed and the colors are wonderful. The text goes quite well with the illustratons. The book is a true joy to read with the young ones, or one that the young ones like to read to them selves. Highly recommend this one and the other Franklin books in the series. This is good stuff here.

This Book is one of my favorites. Franklin starts off in the beginning really upset because His grandparents couldn't make it for thanksgiving this year. It had always been a tradition for the family to get together and celebrate the holiday. So to make e Franklin happy his parents went out and invited other people in the town to come to dinner for a surprise. Not knowing Franklin invited his own people. So when thanksgiving morning came tons of people were at the house. And they all had a great thanksgiving. I would recommend this book to children 4-10. It was really cute and had great detailed pictures.

Thankful for Franklin

Thanksgiving often gets covered up with the rush for Christmas and we were looking for something to help us properly recognize this family holiday. Sharon Jennings gives us a warm story of Franklin's family that fits the bill. My 4 year old loves Franklin and this story is helping bridge the time between Halloween and Thanksgiving by giving us a family story worth sharing.
The colors of fall jump off the page and engage both our children, even our 6 year old. If you enjoy Franklin you will want to add this to you child's holiday book collection.

Both of my daughters love this book. It is a cute story with wonderful illlustrations. My younger daughter who is 3 years old, insists that I read this book to her at least once a day. This story has a great message for our little ones. It lets them know it is ok to be different. In a time when acceptance by their peers is so important and our children feel the pressure to be just like everyone else, it is nice for them to know that it is our unique abilities that make this world a wondeful place.

I had the opportunity to meet Micky Dolenz and was probably the first person to get the book signed for me son. In reading the book, it is as sweet as Micky himself. Being a Monkees fan, I wanted the book. My kids liked the story and the pictures. It was a great gift and so well written. He can sing, he can act and he really understands kids and what they want to read.

I pre-ordered this as a Monkees fan but I'm not a pushover- I have an 8 year old son and am still living to talk about it!
This book is absolutely charming AND smart-marvelous illustrations and enough information to get kids to think but not dry. We are pretty jaded about kids' books these days and we really like this one. It was fun to tell my son and my husband, "hey, did you see who the author is?"

41/2 "Here We Come, Bi-Pedaling Down Your Street..."
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-27
"...Gak gets the funniest looks from, almost every monkey he meets..." Like author Mickey Dolenz, Gak is a monkey (I suppose Dolenz is actually a "Monkee"), but, unlike Dolenz, Gak is notable for walking on two feet. In fact, he's the first bipedaling monkey in the "Big Trees" community. Dolenz explains that Gak is a hominid, a creature that began to walk around 4 million years ago--in approximately the same era as "Lucy," the famous example of "Australopithecus afarendis." Dolenz includes these facts in a forward, a sincere sounding account of anthropological curiosity. These opening comments make Dolenz seem genuinely absorbed by his subject, rather than just another celebrity cashing in on the recent children's book craze.

While the pre-human setting is remote, the theme is familiar: Gakky's ability to walk on two feet makes him different. The other monkeys call him names ("Gakky Two-Feet"), and Gakky has self-doubts. Telegraphing the story's plot, Dolenz has Gak's mother say: "You should never be ashamed of being different." Someday that difference might turn out ta be helpful."

Dolenz introduces another folktale motif ("The Forbidden Lands")when risk-taking "Frizz" dares the young monkeys to run through the dangerous "Tall Grass," and anyone who doesn't is a "scaredy cat." Gak replies assertively that the thing he's afraid of are "the big cats," the lions who "would have us for lunch if they couold." Gak's argument persuades no one, and, to no adult's surprise, the group siin runs right into the hunting territory of a huge, hungry lion. Gak heroically scoops up a cute female monkey ("Gleeb") who can't run fast because of a childhood accident. Just as his mother predicted, Gak's difference proves very helpful" His two-footed stance makes him tall enough to guide all the other monkeys safely home, but not before the lion makes one last ferocious leap at Gak and Gleeb.

The story flows well, and illustrator Dave Clark's simian faces individualizes the monkeys. (He also resists the temptation to draw them as the musical Monkees, although one or two reminded me of Peter TOrk. Yeah, I know, cheap shot...). Clark uses orange, brown, and other warm tones for the grasses and jungle floor, all canopied by the green jungle treetops. His watercolor and ink drawings skillfully depict action and emotion. One very minor complaint is that much of the nocturnal story takes place during low light conditions, and the pictures are a little dark. Some reflected light would have helped here. Moreover, the lion looks a bit too much like a Disney knock-off, but at least he's emulating one of the best.

Dolenz has a light but remarkably informative treatment of evolution and natural selection. He focuses on how physical features might be advantageous in certain environments, and he cleverly gives a very subtle nod to the role of reproduction: When the rescued Gleeb mentions that Gak would make a "fine husband," her friend asks, "But what if your children are like Gak and walk around on two feet?" Gleeb glibly replies, "THat might not be such a bad thing after all." Dolenz, who looks fit and friendly on the inside back cover, has writing talent that transcends his fame as the one who played the drummer. Still, it's difficult not to remember his past...

"We're too busy singing,
to put anybody down..."

An excellent book for any primate.

This is quite possibly one of the best self-promotion guides available. As a college senior getting ready to enter the job market, this book has been like a bible to me. It's no longer enough to have the skills employers are looking for, you have to be able to make a strong impression right from the start and this book will show you how to do it. Get Noticed is full of excellent ideas for creative, unique résumés, thank you cards, and notices. Truly an invaluable resource.

Applause to this little book for giving support to "creatives" bold enough to take the first important steps to self-promote! But being bold is not enough. Effective self-promotion takes planning - lots of planning that includes establishing realistic goals, targeting your audience, and then figuring out how your service or product relates to that audience. Then it takes being "bold," and having the guts to put your plan to work! Clark's book provides the self-confidence many talented people need to get onto the right track. Bottom line is that if we want people to value our creative skills - or invest time or money in our projects - they have to know who we are, what we have accomplished and why they should care! Having talent just isn't enough. (Reviewed by: Marion E. Gold, author of "Personal Publicity Planner: A Guide to Marketing YOU."

As a high school computer graphics teacher, I found this book to be a wonderful addition to our resource library. My students were able to read about a variety of graphic designers and saw great examples of their work. The information from the designers helped my students understand the design process and concept of promoting your work. We contacted some of the designers to get answers to career research questions related to the graphic arts field. Some students also interviewed some of the designers in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who is teaching in this field or planning to become a graphic designer.
