This is indeed a book full of history and tidbits that add to our current historical knowledge. I think that for the non-historian, it is difficult to read all of the notes at the end of each letter (usually longer notes than the letters themselves). I would love to see this book with many of the obscure notes removed and just the very important historical facts included to help explain what is being written about. I am loving learning about Lewis and Clark, but this book was more difficult than most.

James Holmberg has done an excellent job of providing new insight into the Clark family, in particular the relationship between William and his eldest brother by twenty years, Jonathan. ALthough the basis of the book is a set of letters that were uncovered just a few years ago, the information is a fresh look at the Clark we normally view as being part of the word "LewisandClark".
The Journals of Lewis and Clark can tell you a lot about how he acts when he is in a business or military setting, but these intimate letters that he wrote to his brother show that William was a much deeper man that just an explorer. He truly looked up to his brother, and because they lived 200 years ago, that relationship is often lost, especially in since published Clark or Expeditionemorbelia. This is a wonderful book, and if you are trying to get a better persepective of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, this book is a must read to better understand the man that became famous.

This book is a MUST for Lewis and Clark enthusiasts! BUY IT!

Mr. Holmberg's new forthcoming edition of letters discovered
in an old Louisville, Kentucky estate some two decades ago
will shed new light on many long unanswered questions regarding the life of William Clark, of Lewis and Clark Expedition fame.
Aside from being an archivist at Kentucky's prestigious Filson
Club which holds its own substantial William Clark collection,
Holmberg is himself an expert Lewis and Clark enthusiast who brings passion, intelligence, clarity and understanding to interpretation of these significant letters. I have been privileged to hear the lectures of Mr. Holmberg at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Lewis and Clark Training Academies, and without a doubt this book and its letters give valuable
insight into the life of York, William Clark's slave and
fellow expedition member, the winter at Fort Mandan, William Clark's relationship with his wife, Julia, and his ongoing honest and open, although often grossly misspelled, literary discourse with his brother Jonathan. Readers of Ambrose's UNDAUNTED COURAGE will revel in this book as it gives further insight into the character of William Clark, who often gets
far less press coverage than the colorful figure of
Meriwether Lewis. Every Lewis and Clark enthusiast should
be sitting on the front porch swing awaiting the VERY MOMENT when the mailman delivers this upcoming Amazon offering. The fact that these unknown letters survived AT ALL is amazing. The added scholarship and editing added to the project by
one so respected in the field as Jim Holmberg makes the prospect of this literary work almost too grand to imagine.

Discovery of the letters of William Clark is as significant
as finding an undiscovered portrait of Lincoln. We knew the
man before the discovery, but now we will know him better!

This is the kind of book cherished by all lovers of frontier history--historical researchers and genealogists, as well as those who simply love to read about it. Not just a book of letters, but a lusciously annotated treasure chest of biographical information, and not just on the Clarks, but on the frame of frontier history which surrounded them.

The insights on William Clark and York are indeed interesting, but biographical sketches in the notes reveal arcane facts on Daniel Boone, General James Wilkinson, Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and many others less known but equally interesting. Mr. Holmberg sometimes indulges in speculation and tentative assertions, but the demarcation between fact and inference is always clear.

The work is handsomely constructed, the font easy to read, the notes easy to follow. A complete bibliography is provided along with a complete index. All and all, a pleasure to peruse, a delight to own.

Dr. Clark's book is an easy-to-read guide on how to design training according to the five types of content: procedures, factual information, concepts, processes and principles. She clearly defines each type and then explains to the reader how to design learning based on the "remember level" (memorization by learner) and the "apply level" (application by learner). Dr. Clark gives examples on how to assess each type of content and guides the reader through each chapter with a "visual" - a chart which she fills in as the reader progresses through the book.

One of the instructional designers at our college is leaving to head the implementation of an online program at another college. I bought her this book as a going-away gift because it is an essential tool for every one who designs learning. This resource should be in every college's, instructional designer's and instructor's library. It is well worth the price.

Dr. Clark's instructional methods in this book describe five different areas: facts, concepts, processes, procedures and principles of technical training. It summarizes and applies current research that illustrates instructional strategies allowing instructional designers to better grasp these training processes. I liked the way she applied these instructional methods in a clear-cut, uncomplicated way throughout the book.

I've been using Dr. Clark's method of instructional design since 1992 to develop training materials targeted at highly-skilled software engineers. Again and again, students have commented on the way these course materials are not only helpful during class, but also later as reference materials when they're trying to apply what they've learned.

Be warned: Developing these kinds of "information mapped" training materials requires more effort than simply throwing together some PowerPoint slides with a few bullet items. But trust me, your students will thank you.

I am recommending this book as required reading for all our trainers.

My graduate advisor recommended this book and I wish I'd had it sooner. It has been extremely helpful with both my classwork and my thesis. When muttling through scientific literature, this has come in handy for understanding the esoteric vocabulary. It is laid out just like a Webster's dictionary, so terms are easy to find. There are also 28 Appendices with everything from maps of goegraphic regions and biomes to units conversions to abbrevaitons and proof correction marks. It is also good for finding the correct term to describe that concept your professor was discussing in class.

This book shows you how to make complex things easy to understand, and it is based on solid research. If you are involved in communicating or teaching anything that is complex (to the audience), you need this book. The authors practice what they teach; a fairly complex set of well-researched recommendations is presented in a clear and easily digestible format. Nothing is "dumbed down," just presented clearly.
I have been following the research into "cognitive load" (difficulty in learning) on the Internet for some years now, but I yearned for single, coherent book to tie it all together. One day I typed that phrase into the search box on Amazon, and up came this book. It has more than met my expectations.
The book supplies research to support its assertions, but focuses on concrete recommendations that any teacher or communicator can apply right away.
It should be placed in the hands of anybody teaching a complex topic at any grade level, such as
-mathematics
-statistics
-economics
-engineering
-physics
-chemistry
-etc.
I initially ordered this book on interlibrary loan. Although I could easily read it in the three week loan period, I decided to buy it within a few days.

I've been a big fan of Ruth Clark since I attended one of her workshops in 2002, and especially since buying her book, e-Learning and the Science of Instruction, in 2004. There are at least a few reasons. One, Ruth's guidance for instructional designers is based in research - not fad and not personal belief. Two, she bridges the gap between educational research and training for adults. Three, she always makes sure to build specific, useful guidelines from the research and theory she cites.

This time out, Ruth, along with Frank Nguyen of Intel and John Sweller of the University of New South Wales, lay down a host of design recommendations based on cognitive load theory. The theory centers around the reality of working memory - the in-the-now processing capacity of the brain, limited to 7 bits, plus or minus two. Learning is limited by the capacity of working memory, and there are a number of strategies instructional designers can use to manage the cognitive load placed on it so that learning is made more effective, more efficient or both. I'll point out just two important ideas from the book and trust that you will be sufficiently tempted to take possession of this important book.

The theory has evolved three types of cognitive load: intrinsic, extrinsic and germane. Intrinsic load is the demand placed on working memory by the nature of the task, more specifically the interactivity between content elements that must be learned. The amount of intrinsic load can be seen in the difference between learning the alphabet and learning to read. Reading involves understanding grouped letters as words, attaching meaning to them and understanding them when placed with other words that create complete thoughts. Extraneous load is that imposed on working memory that does not add to learning. Poor writing increases extraneous load, the kind that needs to be minimized or eliminated. Germane load places demand on working memory that contributes to learning - practice exercises, varied examples and the like. Ruth and friends cite plenty of research to support the theory and then provide many practical guidelines flowing from it.

The other big idea, at least for me, is the realization that managing cognitive load for experts is very different than for novices. Most of the guidelines used for designing instruction for novices must be faded and eventually eliminated as learners gain expertise. Again, research and practical guidelines follow from this insight.

My single - and small - criticism for Ruth Clark is the continued inclusion of material from her previous works. For example, I keep seeing the same little guy and his memory looking at the computer screen and listening to his computer speakers in every one of her books. She also continues to treat the reader as a novice, supplying all those supports for novices that frustrate me a little. The obvious answer is to ignore those supports and move on the the more meaty content. Problem is, from a value perspective, I'd be skipping over about a third of the book!

In sum, I find this book to be essential for instructional designers and those who manage or purchase learning programs. Just as the practice of medicine is improved by evidence-based procedures and guidelines, so too is instructional design.

I'm convinced this is the best way to learn about Environmental Philosophy! While some sections are difficult and can bog you down, most are clear and well-written.

I'd recommend this book as both a teaching tool and as something you can pick up to learn on your own. It's more difficult than most pleasure reading but the subject is particurarily heavy.

This kind of education is essential to the environmentalist or someone trying to understand the movement.

Regardless of whether you are interested in deep ecology, animal rights, envirnmental ethics,eco-feminism or political ecology, this excellently edited edition will have something of interest for you. Those who are looking for a more scientific approach to examing our relationship with nature, as oppossed to the more philosophical writings of Muir, Thoreau and Abbey, this book will be especially appreciated.
Published primarily for use in environmetal philosophy/science courses at the university level, this book is very useful in providing a well researched, diversen sampling from some of the most important theorists in the field. Essays by J. Baird Calicott, Tom Regan, author of the revolutionary work "The Case Animal Rights", Holmes Rolston III, author of the seminal text "Environmetal Ethics", the Norweigan philosopher Arne Naess and , the so-called founder of the deep Ecology movement, Aldo Leopold, author of the famous "Sand County Almanac", as well as works by other important scholars such as George Sessions, Warick Fox, the famous eco-feminist historian Carolyn Merchant, John Clark and Gary Snyder along with many others.
Although the essays contianed in this text can be challenging at times, in the end the payoff definitely makes it worth the effort. This difficulty is, at least, in part due to the fact that what this book requires is a new way of examining our relationship with nature and a willingness to examine problems from a more holistic perspective, which can sometimes be a hard thing for those taught that the world is here simply for man's exploitation (gender specificity intended). This volume is particularly effective in giving students a well-rounded introduction to many of the most important issues in environmental writing today. As the seriousness of our ecological problems persist and even worsen, this book will continue to be a highly informative source of information for students and instructors for years to come.

The Eucharist Makes the Church: Henri De Lubac and John Zizioulas in Dialogue

Very Thorough Summary of Both Theologians... Almost too In-depth
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-22
"The Eucharist Makes the Church" claims to present an ecumenical dialogue between two of the top Western and Eastern scholars whereby the reader gains an introductory overview of de Lubac's and Zizioulas' theological framework and writings; however, the book was not so much of a dialogue as it was a comparison, whereby the similarities and differences of the two men were provided. Furthermore, those who choose this book as an introductory overview may be sadly disappointed because the book's depth and complexity can easily leave the reader confused.

Why did Rev. McPartlan choose the Eucharist as the means of comparison between Henri de Lubac and John Zizioulas? McPartlan emphasizes in his introduction that the relation of the Eucharist and the Church is not "unintegrated or peripheral" to de Lubac's and Zizioulas' theologies but rather "though de Lubac made much less effort to systematize his vision than Zizioulas has, both visions are ecclesiological and therefore, at heart, eucharistic. The Eucharist therefore constitutes a powerful means of comparing these visions and bringing the respective traditions from which they emerge into dialogue" (xix). Both men recognize the necessity for a reclamation of the understanding of the interdependent nature of the Eucharist and the Church, and that the Eucharist is "the heart of the Church" and therefore "the heart of all ecclesiology" (xvi).

Fr McPartlan's ultimate achievement with his book is the ecumenical bridges this work has constructed between the East and West, as The Eucharist Makes the Church has become a favorite of Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant scholars alike. For example, just as Pope Benedict XVI heralds the idea of communion as the fundamental hermeneutical core, Zizioulas similarly argues communion must function as a core systematic principle (cf. p.133-4). Also, McPartlan points out how while the Latin Church is advanced in its Christology, it is lacking in its theology of the Holy Spirit (74). The Latin Church can surely learn more on the Holy Spirit from both Her Eastern Orthodox and Protestant brethren. By bringing the theological deficiencies of the West to light, Dr. McPartlan aides the ecumenical cause by directing western theologians to areas where they may focus their dialogues with their other Christian brethren.

This book allows you to listen in on one of the most interesting conversations in contemporary theology. The work of Henri de Lubac and John Zizioulas are both attempts to refresh the theological visions of their respective Churches (Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox) by going back to the patristic sources. McPartlan helps to point the way toward a non-scholastic approach to theology which is grounded the eucharistic liturgical life that is the Church in an effort to clarify what unites and divides these two ancients communions and to point the way to unity. An excellent work which includes valuable full bibiliographies of both authors.

I would give this book to all my friends if I wasn't so poor. Maybe I'll sell my computer to do so...Really, though, McPartlan has done his homework and does a supurb job in presenting the Eucharistic theology of two respected theologians, one Roman Catholic (de Lubac), the other Eastern Orthodox (Zizioulas), showing how it is the Eucharist which is celebrated in communion with a bishop which constitutes the Church.

The book is divided into three parts. First, de Lubac is presented, covering a wide range of topics which include the nature of personhood, the neopatristic synthesis, nature and supernatural, St.Aquinas and space and time, Mysticism and Eucharist, the Chacedonian shift, universal concrete and corporate personality, the Eucharist makes the Church, the Church makes the Eucharist, bishop as High Priest, the universal and the particular Church, Jean Jaques von Allmen and Nicolas Afanassieff.

Part two concerns Zizioulas's works which cover most of the same themes found in part one, but from a slightly different angle. It also contains a helpful overview of Russian theologians such as Georges Florovsky, Vladimir Lossky, and Nicolas Afanassieff.

Part three puts de Lubac and Zizioulas in diologue. Topics include Beginning and End, Christ and the Spirit, History and Eschatolgy, The Beating Heart of the Church, Baptism Penance and the Eucharist, Blocks and Strings and Spiders Webs. People of God and Body of Christ.

The conclusion covers The Church and the World. Complementary Critique, and Catholicity.

For further reading there is an exhaustive bibliography for both theologians and a general one which is very, very helpful.

This book is so needed in this age of often misguided ecumenism which often neglects the meaning and role of the Eucharist as the Heart of the Church's life. Please look at Zizioulas' other books, especially "Being as Communion".

I can't say enough about how this book can take your thought life and force you to go deeper, examine the roots and heart of your beliefs and who you are! With Jerusha's guidance, you are able to face the lies that penetrate the mind, replace them with truths and pursue the freedom that Christ wants us to have in Him! The chapters are well laid out: first examining the lies/truths, then giving practical steps to help live them out and finally uses challenging questions for reflection and personal evaluation.

I would recommend this for women of all ages and stages of life.

I read so many books where people beat around the bush and don't get to the point of what they are trying to say b/c's they are so inimidated to say it. This book was brilliant. The person who wrote the book was a very smart intelligent person. There are so many things that bring us down every single day. And the things we believe about ourselves and others are crippling to our lives sometimes. It really opened my eyes when Jerusha was talking about the lust issues that women face. I am a young married woman and its good to know you aren't alone in the things that you feel and thats its normal. However now I can really nail on the head what I am feeling and realize that I can come against it in the name of Jesus! My husband is not a strong Christian but this book shows me that if I can be an example even in the small things like looking at a nice looking man and wondering.... then I can learn to stop whereever that is going to take me next. I just turned 23 and was married at 20 so I can't really pinpoint how Im feeling sometimes. The moment I began this book I began to think of people who might benefit, but then I stopped as I realized that I needed it. It's thoughtful, insightful, and challenges each of us to allow our thought life to be transformed. I love the fact that Jerusha is honest and doesn't pretend to have all the answers, and yet gently shows us the promise of change.

Every Thought Captive is an excellent read, with very challenging insights and pertinent questions to consider about one's thought life. Each chapter deals with a different topic, from depression to envy, lust and worry, and compares lies we tell ourselves to the truths in scripture. The author writes in a friendly, jargon-free, completely honest way--more honest than I would feel comfortable being in a nationally-published book--but that openness encourages the reader to be equally vigilant in uncovering their own deep recesses of inner conversations. Then the reader may effectively confront the lies with the gracious truth of God's love and mercy.

Having spent a lot of time looking for information on imaginative & fun (and sometimes luxury) travel with kids, I can tell you that this is a really unique book. It is comprehensive, carefully researched and well written with loads of practical tips. Some 'travel with kids' books might as well just be bland advertising copy, this one really provides good editorial content, with positive and critical comments. It is a pleasure to read and we will use it for a long time. Fodor's should publish more of these for other parts of the US/world.

I loved this book and would recommend it to any family wanting to travel in the northeastern United States. The writers offer tips and reviews on places of interest, resorts, and campgrounds in a wide range of prices. In fact, we have visited some of those places and found a brand new vacation prospect in Lake George which we will be trying out this summer! Definitely one of the most informative travel books on the market today -- entertaining even if you do not go to these places.

Very useful book for locals and visitors. We liked the way it gave us recommended age groups and prices. We can now plan ahead places to visit within and on the way to our next holiday area. We have also used it for planning field trips from the school into San Francisco. Easy to use and enjoyable to read.

I've been searching for a book like this for several years and haven't found one that fit the bill until now! I had a great time reading it - so well written - and got more useful information than I'll ever be able to use in one lifetime! Thanks so much to the writers and publishers!

I bought this for my 10 year old daughter whom my husband and i adopted last year. This book was exceptional in interperting her feelings. She has RAD so any book that you can read with your child and both come away with love for each other is awesome!

I read this story to my foster daughter who has RAD. I did find it was a bit long to read in one sitting, but we did it, and she was attentive. At the end she said "That's like me isnt it." "And you're like the old couple, you love me even when I'm bad." I think it is a great story that kids like this can relate to and help them to understand more why they feel what they feel and why they do what they do.

The book is exceptionally well written. I deal with foster care children and parents and I plan to refer them to this book because it reallhy helps to put things in perspective and explains the behaviors of the children they take into their home. the parenting tips were wonderful. I would recommend this book to any one who adopts or fosters children.

Nancy Clark has provided a wonderful tool for parents and therapists to use with traumatized children.

My son listened intently to the story of the little boy who was so filled with anger and who drove everyone away. He could identify with this boy's feelings of loss and his eventual feelings of acceptance and love from his forever parents.
