Another View of William ClarkReview Date: 2006-08-16
The Journals of Lewis and Clark can tell you a lot about how he acts when he is in a business or military setting, but these intimate letters that he wrote to his brother show that William was a much deeper man that just an explorer. He truly looked up to his brother, and because they lived 200 years ago, that relationship is often lost, especially in since published Clark or Expeditionemorbelia. This is a wonderful book, and if you are trying to get a better persepective of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, this book is a must read to better understand the man that became famous.
This book is a MUST for Lewis and Clark enthusiasts! BUY IT!Review Date: 2002-04-14
in an old Louisville, Kentucky estate some two decades ago
will shed new light on many long unanswered questions regarding the life of William Clark, of Lewis and Clark Expedition fame.
Aside from being an archivist at Kentucky's prestigious Filson
Club which holds its own substantial William Clark collection,
Holmberg is himself an expert Lewis and Clark enthusiast who brings passion, intelligence, clarity and understanding to interpretation of these significant letters. I have been privileged to hear the lectures of Mr. Holmberg at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Lewis and Clark Training Academies, and without a doubt this book and its letters give valuable
insight into the life of York, William Clark's slave and
fellow expedition member, the winter at Fort Mandan, William Clark's relationship with his wife, Julia, and his ongoing honest and open, although often grossly misspelled, literary discourse with his brother Jonathan. Readers of Ambrose's UNDAUNTED COURAGE will revel in this book as it gives further insight into the character of William Clark, who often gets
far less press coverage than the colorful figure of
Meriwether Lewis. Every Lewis and Clark enthusiast should
be sitting on the front porch swing awaiting the VERY MOMENT when the mailman delivers this upcoming Amazon offering. The fact that these unknown letters survived AT ALL is amazing. The added scholarship and editing added to the project by
one so respected in the field as Jim Holmberg makes the prospect of this literary work almost too grand to imagine.
Discovery of the letters of William Clark is as significant
as finding an undiscovered portrait of Lincoln. We knew the
man before the discovery, but now we will know him better!
A TREASURE CHEST OF HISTORICAL NUGGETSReview Date: 2002-09-08
The insights on William Clark and York are indeed interesting, but biographical sketches in the notes reveal arcane facts on Daniel Boone, General James Wilkinson, Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and many others less known but equally interesting. Mr. Holmberg sometimes indulges in speculation and tentative assertions, but the demarcation between fact and inference is always clear.
The work is handsomely constructed, the font easy to read, the notes easy to follow. A complete bibliography is provided along with a complete index. All and all, a pleasure to peruse, a delight to own.

One of the instructional designers at our college is leaving to head the implementation of an online program at another college. I bought her this book as a going-away gift because it is an essential tool for every one who designs learning. This resource should be in every college's, instructional designer's and instructor's library. It is well worth the price.

The future of education and communicationReview Date: 2007-03-20
I have been following the research into "cognitive load" (difficulty in learning) on the Internet for some years now, but I yearned for single, coherent book to tie it all together. One day I typed that phrase into the search box on Amazon, and up came this book. It has more than met my expectations.
The book supplies research to support its assertions, but focuses on concrete recommendations that any teacher or communicator can apply right away.
It should be placed in the hands of anybody teaching a complex topic at any grade level, such as
-mathematics
-statistics
-economics
-engineering
-physics
-chemistry
-etc.
I initially ordered this book on interlibrary loan. Although I could easily read it in the three week loan period, I decided to buy it within a few days.

Efficiency in Learning: Efficiency in DesignReview Date: 2008-03-19
This time out, Ruth, along with Frank Nguyen of Intel and John Sweller of the University of New South Wales, lay down a host of design recommendations based on cognitive load theory. The theory centers around the reality of working memory - the in-the-now processing capacity of the brain, limited to 7 bits, plus or minus two. Learning is limited by the capacity of working memory, and there are a number of strategies instructional designers can use to manage the cognitive load placed on it so that learning is made more effective, more efficient or both. I'll point out just two important ideas from the book and trust that you will be sufficiently tempted to take possession of this important book.
The theory has evolved three types of cognitive load: intrinsic, extrinsic and germane. Intrinsic load is the demand placed on working memory by the nature of the task, more specifically the interactivity between content elements that must be learned. The amount of intrinsic load can be seen in the difference between learning the alphabet and learning to read. Reading involves understanding grouped letters as words, attaching meaning to them and understanding them when placed with other words that create complete thoughts. Extraneous load is that imposed on working memory that does not add to learning. Poor writing increases extraneous load, the kind that needs to be minimized or eliminated. Germane load places demand on working memory that contributes to learning - practice exercises, varied examples and the like. Ruth and friends cite plenty of research to support the theory and then provide many practical guidelines flowing from it.
The other big idea, at least for me, is the realization that managing cognitive load for experts is very different than for novices. Most of the guidelines used for designing instruction for novices must be faded and eventually eliminated as learners gain expertise. Again, research and practical guidelines follow from this insight.
My single - and small - criticism for Ruth Clark is the continued inclusion of material from her previous works. For example, I keep seeing the same little guy and his memory looking at the computer screen and listening to his computer speakers in every one of her books. She also continues to treat the reader as a novice, supplying all those supports for novices that frustrate me a little. The obvious answer is to ignore those supports and move on the the more meaty content. Problem is, from a value perspective, I'd be skipping over about a third of the book!
In sum, I find this book to be essential for instructional designers and those who manage or purchase learning programs. Just as the practice of medicine is improved by evidence-based procedures and guidelines, so too is instructional design.

I'd recommend this book as both a teaching tool and as something you can pick up to learn on your own. It's more difficult than most pleasure reading but the subject is particurarily heavy.
This kind of education is essential to the environmentalist or someone trying to understand the movement.
An Excellent Introduction to Environmental PhilosophyReview Date: 2002-07-06
Published primarily for use in environmetal philosophy/science courses at the university level, this book is very useful in providing a well researched, diversen sampling from some of the most important theorists in the field. Essays by J. Baird Calicott, Tom Regan, author of the revolutionary work "The Case Animal Rights", Holmes Rolston III, author of the seminal text "Environmetal Ethics", the Norweigan philosopher Arne Naess and , the so-called founder of the deep Ecology movement, Aldo Leopold, author of the famous "Sand County Almanac", as well as works by other important scholars such as George Sessions, Warick Fox, the famous eco-feminist historian Carolyn Merchant, John Clark and Gary Snyder along with many others.
Although the essays contianed in this text can be challenging at times, in the end the payoff definitely makes it worth the effort. This difficulty is, at least, in part due to the fact that what this book requires is a new way of examining our relationship with nature and a willingness to examine problems from a more holistic perspective, which can sometimes be a hard thing for those taught that the world is here simply for man's exploitation (gender specificity intended). This volume is particularly effective in giving students a well-rounded introduction to many of the most important issues in environmental writing today. As the seriousness of our ecological problems persist and even worsen, this book will continue to be a highly informative source of information for students and instructors for years to come.

Very Thorough Summary of Both Theologians... Almost too In-depthReview Date: 2006-03-22
Why did Rev. McPartlan choose the Eucharist as the means of comparison between Henri de Lubac and John Zizioulas? McPartlan emphasizes in his introduction that the relation of the Eucharist and the Church is not "unintegrated or peripheral" to de Lubac's and Zizioulas' theologies but rather "though de Lubac made much less effort to systematize his vision than Zizioulas has, both visions are ecclesiological and therefore, at heart, eucharistic. The Eucharist therefore constitutes a powerful means of comparing these visions and bringing the respective traditions from which they emerge into dialogue" (xix). Both men recognize the necessity for a reclamation of the understanding of the interdependent nature of the Eucharist and the Church, and that the Eucharist is "the heart of the Church" and therefore "the heart of all ecclesiology" (xvi).
Fr McPartlan's ultimate achievement with his book is the ecumenical bridges this work has constructed between the East and West, as The Eucharist Makes the Church has become a favorite of Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant scholars alike. For example, just as Pope Benedict XVI heralds the idea of communion as the fundamental hermeneutical core, Zizioulas similarly argues communion must function as a core systematic principle (cf. p.133-4). Also, McPartlan points out how while the Latin Church is advanced in its Christology, it is lacking in its theology of the Holy Spirit (74). The Latin Church can surely learn more on the Holy Spirit from both Her Eastern Orthodox and Protestant brethren. By bringing the theological deficiencies of the West to light, Dr. McPartlan aides the ecumenical cause by directing western theologians to areas where they may focus their dialogues with their other Christian brethren.

The book is divided into three parts. First, de Lubac is presented, covering a wide range of topics which include the nature of personhood, the neopatristic synthesis, nature and supernatural, St.Aquinas and space and time, Mysticism and Eucharist, the Chacedonian shift, universal concrete and corporate personality, the Eucharist makes the Church, the Church makes the Eucharist, bishop as High Priest, the universal and the particular Church, Jean Jaques von Allmen and Nicolas Afanassieff.
Part two concerns Zizioulas's works which cover most of the same themes found in part one, but from a slightly different angle. It also contains a helpful overview of Russian theologians such as Georges Florovsky, Vladimir Lossky, and Nicolas Afanassieff.
Part three puts de Lubac and Zizioulas in diologue. Topics include Beginning and End, Christ and the Spirit, History and Eschatolgy, The Beating Heart of the Church, Baptism Penance and the Eucharist, Blocks and Strings and Spiders Webs. People of God and Body of Christ.
The conclusion covers The Church and the World. Complementary Critique, and Catholicity.
For further reading there is an exhaustive bibliography for both theologians and a general one which is very, very helpful.
This book is so needed in this age of often misguided ecumenism which often neglects the meaning and role of the Eucharist as the Heart of the Church's life. Please look at Zizioulas' other books, especially "Being as Communion".
