A quick read that appeals on several levels

This slim book, first published in 1943, is an interesting conjunction of two of my favorite authors: H.V. Morton, in his time and since a very popular travel writer, and Winston S. Churchill, appearing in his better-known role as wartime British prime minister. Morton's considerable talents are here deployed to describe the memorable trip WSC made to meet President Roosevelt in 1941 -- a trip that led to the Atlantic Charter.
The Charter was issued (not signed, as Morton points out) 66 years ago today, August 14, 1941. Although the US was not yet in the war, the Charter described the Anglo-American vision for the post-war world, including self-determination for all peoples, "freedom from want and fear," and disarmament. As a basis for future agreements, including the UN Charter -- as well as useful propaganda for both allied and Axis nations -- it was a significant document.
Morton's book starts with what struck me as an unusually stiff Introduction, in which he discusses the Charter in the formal tones one uses for Really Important Things. After that, however, Morton's prose resumes its normal cadences as he describes his sudden and secretive invitation to go on this trip, the trip across the Atlantic aboard HMS Prince of Wales, the meeting with FDR, and the voyage back home. Though a brief book, the reader is still treated to a vivid description of a trans-Atlantic cruise in wartime -- made all the more poignant if the reader knows what was in store for Prince of Wales and her crew just a few months later (Morton does not mention this himself) -- as well as lively depictions of Churchill himself. FDR necessarily has a smaller role in the book, but he too is well-described, and no secret is made of his battle with polio.
"Atlantic Meeting" is a book which should attract a variety of readers: Churchillians, fans of H.V. Morton's work, and students of the war -- both its naval and its diplomatic efforts. Since I am all those things, I was pleased several times over. Fortunately, copies of "Atlantic Meeting" are not hard to find or expensive. If you fit these categories too, it may be worth finding a copy of your own.

The classical book of otolaryngology, Atlas of Head and Neck Surgery by Silver and Rubin, is back on my bookshelf by its new edition. This edition is updated by new clasifications made in Head and Neck Surgery by the AJCC few years ago. By this way, the new beginners at Otolaryngological Surgery can briefly and easily understand the new terminology without falling into controversies made for years. There are multiple figures for each procedure and this helps the reader to understand quicker. It includes nearly all procedures on Otolaryngological Surgery; from laryngectomies to neck dissections and craniofacial approaches. This book is a great source that every Head and Neck surgeon must have it.

The books are great - Grays goes into great detail, and both have excellent and prolific diagrams. (most notably, the origin/insertion diagramsin Netter.) The table of contents is only so-so, making it difficult to find specifics if you don't quite remember where something is.

Very good text book of immunology

I found this a very suitable text for the teaching of entry-level immunology as it is very clearly written and also amply illustrated with excellent graphics and flow diagrams. It has been a very well received set text (adopted since 1999) for the two immunology modules that we teach in our polytechnic diploma course in medical laboratory technology. My students, in particular, very much like the short summaries which are in point form for easy revision. One possible drawback is a missing chapter on commonly used techniques in diagnostic immunology - whilst this book is not intended as a manual of laboratory methods, we would have loved to read about the various principles & applications, explained in the authors' succinct style, thus making it a comprehensive text.

an essential accessory for the novice student who desperately needs a way to "put things in order" on what seems like an enormous load of details in pathology courses. The illustrations are excellent, yet do not skip the text, for although it is inadequate as a comprehensive review of the subject, it's brief simplicity helps you cope with the broad spectrum presented in the textbooks.

There's probably only a handful of books available that talk about early logging in the Pacific Northwest. This is one of them. Sam Churchill is referring to his dad, Big Sam, in the title. The area is inland a short distance from Astoria in Northwest Oregon. It talks about the reality of opening that area to logging and then follows the transition of methods and means into more modern times. There's a nice number of photos with great material. Unfortunately there's two or three to a page and sometimes it's hard to really enjoy the full composition.
In addition to the stories about how logging was done in those times there's a number of great family stories that are only found in books such as these. By the time you finish you'll feel the dampness in the air as you drive through the back country of the Coast Slope.

Bonnie writes from years of birding trips to Churchill. Other fauna as well as flora are listed. Maps for easy location of sites as well as trail information is listed, including polar bears alerts. Especially useful: front cover graph, by month, of most likely to be seen birds. Up to date town/motel/rentals/tour with addresses/phone numbers is great. Don't count on colored photographs...there are few. Take your favorite North American Birding Guide along with Chartier's to Churchill.

This is a good book for anyone interested in WWII history. His speeches give Great Britain's point of view durning WWII, even before the war begins. America is mentioned several times in the book, but does this book does not give a very detailed description of what is going on in America durning this time. The book focuses on the war in Europe and Africa only. Japan is rarely mentioned. Overall this is a good book, comprised of Churchill's speeches.
