This book has become a trusted friend in the minefield of commencing medical examinations on patients.

The initial chapters relate to general principles of history taking and physical examination. Following that are chapters dedicated to each of the systems of the human body, including a section on psychiatry. Finally there is instruction in writing and presenting your findings as well as screening examination formats.

The text is very readable with ample photographs, diagrams and tables to illustrate and clarify the information given. This book is extremely popular with most students I know because it presents the information clearly and with humour.

This book will reward any buyer in their early years of medical examination, and will continue to be useful well into specialization.

AN ILLUSTRATIVE DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE

"Clinical Examination: A Systematic Guide to Physical Diagnosis" contains everything a clinician needs to know about medical case-studies. The practical emphases of this book spanned across physiology and anatomy. It guides its reader on how best to observe and infer symptom signs. This book also included generous evaluation of both paediatric and geriatric symptoms. Midwifery students would be pleased with the commendable job it did on topics relating to obstetrics and neonatology.
In conclusion, I would say that this book is a good diagnostic tool: a rich resource whose practical approach is supported by spectacular figures and photographs. Another quality guide for discerning medics!

If you're an Australian medical student, it's VERY useful

"Clinical Examination" is pretty much an essential book if you're studying at medical school in Australia. In the 1990s, it replaced much bulkier and more detailed books that were used in the past. Nick Talley and Simon O'Connor have distilled information from various sources into one book - it's not anything groundbreaking, but it's convenient.

Essentially, it's a guide to how to perform take patient histories and perform clinical examinations. It fairly much to the point, with not a lot of waffle, but has the odd bit of very dry "physician humor" to keep you reading. It won't explain a lot - it'll just tell you what to do.

A word of warning outside Australasia - this book does tend to be relatively fine-tuned to the Australian style of clinical examination, which I understand is quite different to, say, US style examination. I'm not sure that it would transport off Australian shores that well.

There is no better choice

I teach physical examination at Harvard Med school, and could not work without this book. It's a gem. Easy to read chapters outline practical approaches to physical diagnosis. Each chapter has a summary approach to the history and exam for each system at the end. Nice tables and plenty of pictures make it an invaluable aid if you're serious about learning these critical skills.

But, that's not saying much. The clinical flowcharts are somewhat useful. But, like much of naturopathy this book is geared toward questionable diagnoses like food intolerances, intestinal disbyosis and toxic liver. But what more can one expect when the 3rd author, an instrutor at Bastyr College, has another book attributing almost all illness to dehydration!

This handbook is a shorter version of the textbook of Natural Medicine published a few years ago by the first two authors. The three present authors are all affiliated with the Bastyr University, Washington in the United States. This college of naturopathic medicine was established in 1978 by Les Griffith, Bill Mitchell and Joe Pizzorno in the name of their teacher John Bastyr. He was one of the pioneers of natural medicine, who had grown up with a father pharmacist and a mother interested in healthy living in the beginning of the 1900 in Seattle.
The Bastyr University today offers the student acupuncture and oriental medicine, applied behavioral science, exercise science and wellness, nerbal sciences, nutrition, psychology with a health concentration, spirituality, health and medicine. Joe Pizzorno, a former midwife, co-founder and past president of the University has been instrumental in bringing scientific methods to natural medicine and setting educational standards for teaching in this field.
This book has 74 chapters or entries on 74 common diseases from Acne to viral pharyngitis and a useful index. Each entry is arranged in a reader friendly way with therapeutic flow charts to help in the decision making process. You will find information on diet, supplements and natural medicine treatments and when needed also traditional medicine options.
The book can be recommended to the therapist interested in learning about natural medicine options in various diseases and for the physician interested in using natural medicine in addition or sometimes instead of traditional drugs...

This is an excellent book!!! It really does cover topics in a way not often presented by other books or texts, it presents them in an easily understandable way. The topics are ones every anesthesiologist hopes to never encounter but inevitably does. This is a great book for stimulating your brain about how you will deal with those crises!

Highly recommended handbook.

Excellent, concise, well-written handbook. Each scenario, unique to a specific anesthesia-related pathophysiological situation, gives logical step-by-step behaviors for the anesthetist to take. The book also provides an outstanding overview of the crisis resource management mentality of the airlines and NASA, and how those principles are closely related to handling anesthetic emergencies. Highly recommended.

This book is very succinct and compared with the books by Habif and fitzpatrick is very short and does not include even half of the dermatological diseases. It discusses bacterial and fungal and viral diseases of the skin with psoriasis only. The explanation on each disease is good but this book is definitely very short and is not good for doctors or specialists in dermatology. In order to make it a good book it should include all or most diseases of the skin and explain it in the same way it is explained in this book.

I am a fourth year medical student going into dermatology, and I got this book for kicks because I am a book-a-holic and I liked the layout and simplicity. Probably not the first place to go for information, but might serve well as a book you leave around and flip through. I recommend the American Academy of Dermatology website as a good starting spot: check out their tutorials for medical students.

This book is well illustrated as suggested by title. The pictures of the different skin conditions are particular helpful in enhancing one's memory of the subject. It offers ideal depth for undergraduate study and is most helpful as pre-reading and review. I covered it in a week and am sounding pretty much like a dermatologist in class. Simplicity is the key to my liking of this book.

Book is very technical and not to easy to use.
Not recommended for beginners, this book would be helpful for LMT who had been practicing for a while.

The foreword suggested that this is 'not just another book' & and is one of the first to 'spill the beans' on Rolfing techniques. However much of the techniques are covered in Art Riggs' book & video, although Riggs acknowledge that his book is based on Stanborough's manual.
It is written in a philosophical way, and aim to only present the techniques without the details of anatomy. Comprises of 2 sections: The Basics, and Techniques. The basics describe the philosophy of muscle dysfunction & the effect of myofascial release. The techniques covered muscles of different parts of body, with an attempt to give a clear & detailed instructions.
Stanborough demonstrates his communication skill on how to ask the client to perform movement: 'Take your tailbone away towards the wall behind you'.
My wishlist: Videos will be superb to accompany this manual. My wish has come true, the author has released a set of DVD on the techniques. Great resource
Excellent resource to add to your deep tissue book & video collection.

This is a good book for anyone seeking to expand their understanding of fascia. By examining the relationship between the nervous system and the fascial network, it brings a new appreciation to just what happens under our hands when we touch someone. It's also rich with techniques, presented in a manner that makes them immediately repeatable in the practitioner's clinic. I'd recommend this book to the beginner as well as the experienced practitioner - it has material that will be of interest to massage and phsyiotherapists, OTs, osteopaths and chiropractors.

This book is primarily written for manual therapists. It introduces soft tissue release techniques, which are inspired by the French osteopathic approach to fascial contractures ('unwinding, 'indirect technique', visceral osteopathy) as well as by Rolfing method of myofascial release. The author is a leading international instructor in the Rolfing method and has written several other books about this method. Yet this book seems to me to be his absolute masterpiece. The techniques are so elegantly and clearly described, that as a reader one never ends up wondering what the author exactly means when applying the described techniques for the first time with an actual person. While being precise in terms of anatomical detail, hand positioning, etc. the author's description also include some very well chosen perceptual models and images for a further refinement of the touch perception. One of the few books in which I left my yellow highlighter aside, as the descriptions are both absolutely clear and yet also aesthetically (almost poetically) pleasing. A joy to read. Definitely one of the best tutorial books in this field.

The Essential Schwind

Review Date: 2008-02-19
This is not just a great book, it is essential for those who like to work quickly, with precision, and thoroughly. The concepts that Peter Schwind puts forth enable the structural worker to proceed using his own perception, which must be aggressively developed over a working lifetime, so that each session with each subject becomes a joyous burst of new and often unexpected kaleidoscope-like shifts. Preconceptions ruin and limit the pattern shifts that may be obtained. The beginning, the middle and the end are not forced; they occur as the subject being worked upon likes them to occur.

And yet, 'control' is not lost, as the practitioner's experience and wisdom are able to guide the process in conjunction with the subject's need for self-reorganization.

Attempts to use templates, or pre-ordained images, or a sequence arrived at by consensus will grate against the subject's desire for self-reorganization.

The number and duration of sessions are freed from preconceptions.

The closest analogy that comes to mind is dancing the authentic Argentine Tango.

Best Residency Program Book

Review Date: 2006-05-03

I am one of 60 postgraduate hematology residents enrolled in a training program in Iraq supervised by Professor Anwar Sheikha, MD, FRCP, FRCPath. We were looking for a reference book to guide us through our intensive training curriculum. This book came as every one's favorite! Though heavy and difficult to handle, especially for a petit lady like myself, the chapters are short, informative, readable, authoritative and up to our needs. The Image Bank CD associated with the book is becoming so popular between the residents that we start our days through presentation of the slides after reading the text earlier, at a rate of a chapter a week. We hopefully get done with all the chapters by the end of our training.

One major drawback of the book is not its sheer weight but rather the number of errors that should not have passed the attention of the editors in a reputable book like Hoffman at its fourth edition! Table 60-8 alone has at least three structural mistakes! Table 60-4 has "AML not otherwise categorized" misplaced! I can count numerous other errors, but still we all feel that this book is the best in the field. I am afraid for others who want to use the book as their sole reference bible, these mistakes could be quite misleading.

We collectively recommend this reference book as the ultimate for any hematology residency program but hope that the next edition, which is supposed to come in five years, be devoid of these avoidable mistakes. One last wish is having the entire book on a CD to be able to print and read the chapters in a more pleasant way.

As a Forensic Psychologist I use this text and recommend it to clients to better understand and appreciate the psycho-developmental needs of their children. Of particular interest to most of those parents are the diverse tables which clarify the expected and unique behaviors of children by age group. This provides those parents with a guide book to assist them in child rearing through age 18. That reference material not only facilitates the parent's understanding of the needs of the child, but also better prepares more effective parenting skills and preparation for developmental issues which are significant in custody and visitation (or access) legal questions. Parents have reported developing a feeling of confidence since they are using scientific data in making parenting decisiions. Legal authorities -- judges and attorneys -- have felt more confident in their recommendations, opinions, and decisions which are based upon evidence. -- Swen Helge, Ph.D.

Mold History through the Sheer Force of Your Personality

Review Date: 2006-07-17
John Ramsden wrote a book of uneven quality about Winston Churchill's legend since 1945. Ramsden clearly does not target readers with no prior, in-depth knowledge of this towering presence. In some chapters, Ramsden gets bogged down in detail that, over time, annoys readers. Ramsden should have written shorter chapters about Churchill and his relationship with countries such as Australia and New Zealand. Enumerating a large number of streets, pubs, parks, etc. named after Churchill in these different countries does not add much to the narrative. Ramsden is at his best in Part One when he focuses on the controversial personality of Churchill. Churchill understood very well that he had to write his side of the story to mold the minds of his contemporaries and remain relevant to future generations. Churchill has outshined most other memorable men and women in this enterprise. Many people around the world still want to claim a piece of Churchill by quoting him in a wide variety of settings. The ultimate power of Churchill lies in the richness of his parley and writings which can still stir emotions when reason fails to mobilize for decisive action.

Time was Wrong

Notwithstanding Time magazine's famous judgement, I think Winston Churchill was the man of the last century. So does John Ramsden, who has written a book that will be deeply appreciated by those with a lively interest in Churchill's impact on politics and culture following World War II and up to the present. The text is somewhat uneven in that the author meanders between quite keen insights on important issues, such as Churchill's role toward what became the EU, and the more dubious, such as listing the various streets named for the great man in Australia. While a first time reader on Churchill should read a good biography like that of Sir Roy Jenkins, this book will be worthy of purchase by any true acolyte of this great, and still relevant, figure of history.

A must for the Churchill admirer, student, or skeptic

Review Date: 2003-12-05
Sir Winston Churchill had no shortage of admirers among the generation that knew, or saw, him during his Finest Hour, 1940-1941. And they have remained legion among later generations. But in the wake of the September 11 attacks, many people -- and especially many politicians in need of stirring rhetoric -- have turned to WSC again, attracted to his reputation, perhaps, more than to the strict details of his long and eventful life.

John Ramsden's fascinating book is an analysis of how Churchill's reputation was born, was consciously shaped by the man himself, and how it has evolved in the years since his death. The bulk of the analysis focuses on the five English-Speaking nations, though Europe is included as well. Another large section looks at the famous "Iron Curtain" or "Sinews of Peace" speech at Fulton, Missouri, in 1946, and how it -- precisely as WSC intended -- transformed the world's view of him from heroic-but-passé war leader to very-much-active statesman, politician, and geopolitical strategist.

A final section, which I found the most interesting, analyses many of the key Churchill biographies written over the years, from Randolph Churchill and Martin Gilbert's official biography, to Lord Moran, to Manchester, to Roy Jenkins' "Churchill: A Biography" (2001), which Ramsden predicts will remain "the authoritative single text for years to come" (p. 545). Ramsden also seems to have counted every Churchill memorial statue, street, pub, and park bench in the world. And while a catalog of these things could easily become tiresome, this author skillfully keeps it from doing so.

This is no small accomplishment. People who write about Churchill are forced to deal with the sheer immensity of his life. Many respond by being prolix, or trite, or they oversimplify, or caricaturize, or fall into either blind hero-worship or equally unnuanced destructiveness. Ramsden does none of these. One way he manages this, of course, is by being fairly sparing of the details of most of WSC's life. Thus, this book will make a lot more sense to someone who already has a fairly good understanding of who the man was, what he did, and when. Another way is by filling his text with stories about, and insights into, Churchill and his contemporaries that are nearly all some combination of fascinating, entertaining, and memorable. Thus, while he's dealing with some Grand Themes, the author surrounds them with a bodyguard of anecdotes that in and of themselves almost guarantee this will be a fun read for any Churchill student or fan.

Significantly, Ramsden is not an *uncritical* admirer of Churchill, though he is clearly an admirer. The Winston we encounter here is not sugarcoated, and some of his unattractive features do come through. That and the mountainous research on display are two signs of Ramsden's chops as a historian.

Finally, as a many-year member of The Churchill Centre and its preceding organization the International Churchill Societies, I should note and commend Ramsden's coverage of this worthy organization. Far from the worshipful society of star-struck fans it is sometimes painted to be, Ramsden shows the CC to be a reputable and respectable association of clear-eyed admirers of the man of the century, warts and all.

I am always amazed at the new aspects or corners of Churchill's life and impact that people can find to write books about. This one, no question, was a book that needed to be written. And for any Churchill student or fan, it's one that needs to be read.

A new way to look at Winston

THis is not a biography of Winston Churchill. This is something new and fascinating. Here we have a text that seeks to examine Churchill the legend, the man, the history of him and his relationship with the english speaking world since 1945. Chapters include investigations of Churchills funeral, 'operation Hope Not' and Churchill 'failure' to lose World War Two, the Finest Hour. Here we learn of Churchill's FUlton speech and also his famous relationship with America, as an honorary citizen no less.

Most interesting are chapters on Churchills relationship with Australia and Canada as well as new anecdotes about why Castro and Guliani, who agree on nothing, both are admirers of Winston. This book also examines the many biographers of Churchill, including Manchester, Gilbert and Jenkins.

THe conlusion is that Churchill is not simply the 'man of the century' but perhaps of the next one as well. This is a tour de force and every Churchill admirer must read it, in fact anyone interested in histiography or in the western egnlish speaking world since 1945 will enjoy this. Every conceivable person stars in this cast, from Isiah Berlin to Dean Acheson and Robert Menzies. The English speaking world will enjoy this book about one of its greatest champions.

A last note, the chapter on Churchill and Europe and Churchill and the Irish are extraordinary in their new takes on the British and their relationship with these two neighboors.

For picking up this book, and it didn't satisfy me completely, but it did give me a much greater insight into the difference between Marxist communism and the kind of communism that the native tribes had pre-contact. I would prefer a little more recognition by the writers that distinguishes the two - only one, for instance, mentioned spirituality. That Marx could even have intimated that the tribes here in the U.S. would be interested in being 'equal' laborers on land that used to be theirs shows he had a complete lack of understanding about their type of communism.

A must read... a real eye-opener.

Masterfully edited by Churchill, the book discusses Marxist ideology and the Native Americans' place within it. Particularly powerful is Russell Means' piece on the "European mentality". Truly an eye-opener.

I really enjoy this little gem. It met all of my criteria for valuable reading: It made me think, it increased my understanding of concepts, issues and ideas that interest me, it serves as a valuable resource that I will be able to refer to later, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy copies for friends.

The overall strength of this book undoubtedly rests in the way it exposes the cultural blinders with which so many "Europeans", with a special emphasis here on marxists, regard indigenous cultures, essentially any non-European peoples. Grounded in an unapologetic Native American skepticism of marxist ideology and intent, the book consists of a series of essays, alternating between American Indian and marxist contributors, where the onus is placed on the latter to "respond to critique by defining its (marxism's) utility and potential to Indians." Although there are a lot of brilliant and thought-provoking opinions and statements generated throughout, the most insightful analyses remain on the part of the Native American contributors and the editor, Ward Churchill. Debunking the claim that marxism represents the epitome of original and superior analytical insight into the "humanization of society", essays by Russell Means, Vine Deloria Jr., Frank Black Elk, Dora-Lee Larson and Churchill offer very lucid observations and suggestions while providing a fascinating evaluation of what is probably the most influential European ideology from a non-euro perspective. Nowhere is this more evident than in the discrepancy between world views, pitting an all-encompassing integration with nature and its importance for human survival against the European stress on production and control over nature. The writings of the marxist contributors provide some astute summations of, primarily orthodox, marxism and how it might apply to socio-cultural problems in non-euro societies, though in the end they do a better job of revealing an underlying cultural chauvinism, illustrating once again how easily doctrine leads to dogma. This is most evident in the insignificant contribution of the Revolutionary Communist Party, interesting only in that it verifies how ideology inevitably encourages ignorance and arrogance on the part of its fanatics, and certainly dispelling even the notion that communism should be seen as the culmination of progessive socialization.

Another major strength of this book is its readability. Though it covers some heady ground, it is presented and always written in a very accessible manner, never floating off into verbose, over-intellectualized abstractions. A background in marxist theory is not necessarily required, as the essays themselves do a great job of covering the core framework and concepts, while the main themes addressed are done so in a manner that anyone should automatically be able to relate to. Credit much of this clarity to the cogency of the Native American mind. Churchill ends the book with a characteristically direct and wise summary of how marxists can benefit from this type of critique, which is not unique, by the way, to the American Indian perspective, and how everyone benefits from working as allies. To close, Churchill outlines a " rudimentary crash course" for acquainting oneself with the Indian experience in America, with a useful bibliography and a call to action for those who understand that the future of the Native American determines the future of everyone on this planet. A powerful message of utmost exigency, as relevant now as when originally published.

We chose to read this book for a group project in a class on Marxism. It's definitely worth reading if you're into Marxism, Native American issues, or radical politics. The book is set up as a collection of essays, with some critiquing previous input from other authors. Whether you end up agreeing with anything the authors say its definitely food for thought, particularly the notion raised that while Marxism does attempt to solve problems of inequity and oppression, it ultimately will do nothing for the plight of native peoples or to conserve the earth's resources. Russell Means (whose cred is very questionable)makes the claim that industrialization is the enemy more so then class conflict, which Marxism does not address. He states that Marxism will continue to see the earth and its resources as something to be exploited, with the only difference being that the wealth is distributed more equitablly. So basically the earth will continue on its downward spiral wrought on by human beings, but at least we'll all have our little piece, at least in theory.

The book doesn't get a 5 only because most of its contributors engage in the typical intellectual abstracts that "activists" with PHd's love to engage in, in order to show how down they are with revolution and radical change. But in the meantime, while another PHd sits at his computer and comes up with the newest scholarly academic interpretation of what Marx means today, the top 5% of the people in this nation own more then the bottom 95%, 30 million Americans live in complete poverty, millions more hover just barely above it but can't do anything to change it because we don't have a liveable wage, 40 million Americans are without health care, we're spending another 350 billion a year on the military, and on the verge of another imperialistic war.

PHd's, students, and activists: GET OFF THE INTERNET AND DESTROY THE RIGHT WING.
