Compels rethinking the whole of US history [4 1/2 stars]
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-19
Too bad that the bottom-line economics of publishing have let this searing account of Indigenous struggles over land and ecology go out of print. Because of its concentration on environmental and land-use issues, this is one of the author's most focused works, though they are all worthwhile. The documentation is thorough; the presentation is relentlessly didactic but always readable. No country that treats its indigenous people as the US always has can claim moral superiority over others. Cf. also Alvin Josephy, "Now That the Buffalo's Gone," a slightly older but still valuable book on many of the same issues.
N.B. Many of Churchill's books reprint essays published elsewhere, so beware of overlap with the contents of several other titles by this committed scholar-activist.

One of the best books on the subject, pending new edition
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1998-08-06
There are many books covering this subject. However it is more common for Epilepsy to be a chapter in a Neurology or other textbook. The signigicant advantage to this sole subject text is the thoroughness and completness of the coverage. It is also better than other sole subject texts I have reviewed. Furthermore simple and what should be obvious matters are discussed yet absent in other texts. An example is the discussion on page 166 of the loss of speech during a simple partial seizure. This symptom is clearly stated yet absent from many other compendium. In fact a patient had just this loss of speech symptom after a neurosurgery procedure and it caused much controversy. Psychiatric consult was called and it was misdiagnosed as a panic/fear syndrome due to the surgery. The patient would have received the wrong treatment. . It was only after being presented with this speech arrest discussion that the diagnosis was changed to being symptomatic of this patients simple partial seizure. This book has more than paid for itself and I await the new edition which should be out soon. There have been many changes since this last publication.

THE book about pain
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-28
The textbook of pain is everything someone needs to start the study of the complex and fascinating phenomenon that is pain. Of course after reading it you will have to read many more scientific papers, to be able to work in pain research, but the book provides the guidelines for your study and helps you select the topic(s) you would like to work on. The book has a very high scientific level given by the authors and editors wich are all respected members of the scientific community. I can only recommend the Textbook of Pain to anyone interested in this field.

The best drug reference book available
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1997-12-02
A reference work in 2 volumes. It consists of an alphabetical index of therapeutic drugs in current use. The two supplement volumes include drugs introduced in the last 5 years. The focus is on the therapeutic use of drugs rather than their detailed chemistry. Relevant pharmacokinetics (half life, volume of distribution) and active metabolites are included. An extensive reference list is included for each drug. Generally recommended for drug information services and the like.

A best buy for a low level laser therapy text.
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-10
Dr. Baxter has put together a concise text on low level laser therapy (LLLT). This book covers the history of light as a therapy from its first recorded uses to our present day laser treatments. Some basic treatment recommendations are discussed in this book. The majority of the text deals with current topics in LLLT as it makes its way into main stream medicine. For the price this book is a best buy.

Things Every Practitioner Should Know!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-17
This book is probably one of the most important books any practitioner should own. Complementary or otherwise, the information in this book is something you will always refer back to. Not only good for beginning practitioners but gives a much to the seasoned professionals as well. Keeps to the facts and simple basic truths that we often forget about when we are caught up in the clinical setting. I recommend anyone who is remotely interested in healing, themselves or others, should get this book.

This Is Not A Chair (It Is A Gem)
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-26
wow! caryl churchill has done it again. she never ceases to amaze, amuse and intrigue. i especially like her last few works (hotel, blue hearts and of course, this is a chair).

her works are getting more experimental and minimal (hotel, this is a chair), and at the same time, never losing their complexity and intellectual (as well as entertainment) values.

i suspect most of the audience who watch this play will not be able to comprehend what's going on if they try to connect the title of each scene with the scene itself. the more you try to connect, the more they do not make sense. that's the whole point. for example, the first scene is entitled 'the war in bosnia', but the scene has absolutely nothing to do with the war. that's why the play is so powerful. the more the titles are 'alienated' from the scenes, the more they make you think about the issues (of bosnia, genetic engineering, hong kong, pornography and censorship, etc).

my only complain is the price. us$9.95 for a 32-pager is not cheap, but then again, i just had to have the book.
