I've seen some of the illusions in this book in the ripleys believe it or not museum. Some of the illusions involve turning a picture upside down and seeing a totally different picture, mazes, those black and white optical illusion spirals that looks like their moving, thinking puzzles and much much more. Worth every cent.

I have read many books on the Duke of Marlborough, and this is hands-down the best. Lengthy discussion of logistics, strategy, and tactics are boiled down to a manageable and lay-man-accessible size. Fair and balanced evaluation of costs of battles and judgement on the part of the commanders involved, this book is first-rate!

Details the friendship between Roosevelt and Churchill.

Review Date: 1999-08-26
A very good and readable book that details the friendship between two of the greatest leaders in the twentieth century. Both the President and the Prime Minister had huge egos, and were known to be difficult, but the friendship that developed between them helped the Allies win the war with Germany, Italy, and Japan. Many interesting stories of the personal lives of both Roosevelt and Churchill. The friendship that developed between these two great men helped in the post war world.

A touch of grey
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-20
Especially in everyday pediatrics, grey is more common a color than either black or white. Field et al. present 100 such "grey" scenarios in which the elements of diagnosis are not straightforward -as they usually aren't in real life. This book is, no doubt, excellent practice for the written portion of the MRCP (UK) part II, but also good reading for pediatric house officers in general. It covers everything from behavioral problems to metabolic diseases; from pediatric cardiology to neonatal neurology. Many cases are supported with b&w pictures, radiographs, EKGs, EEGs and growth charts. The discussions are clear and sound and yet unfulfillingly brief, which perhaps is intentional to leave the reader with room for pursuing more information elsewhere. Unfortunately though, the lack of references does little to aid the reader in this regard. Therefore, information is not the stronghold of this book, as opposed to wisdom, which is clearly written between its lines. It teaches to use common sense generously whenever pieces of a medical puzzle don't seem to fit right, and to consider other possible diagnoses whenever clinical answers appear to come easily served on silver platter. In brief, this is a very good, practical book about a common but generally unexplored subject in pediatrics: the grey cases.

Gua Sha: Atraditional Technique for Modern Practice
Helpful Votes: 88 out of 89 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-06
Gua Sha is a technique that uses a skin lubricant, such as massage oil and a simple chinese ceramic soup spoon (no sharp edges now!). It's a life saver for the tired figers of those who have to give massages to those with tight, fibrous, ropy or crunchy muscles. I first came across this book at an acupuncture conference in 1996. It was one of my best purchases of the year. The book covers in depth, a topic only glanced upon in most acupuncture schools. It's technique is not just for acupuncturists. I believe it's a must read for massage professionals, especially if your hands are starting to wear out from years of giving massage.

The beauty of the book is the pictures of the skin discoloration that may occur if you are very vigorous in your technique. They can be shown to clients as a form of informed consent. If you are more moderate in your technique, this extreme reaction will rarely occur past the first hour. However, a forewarned patient is one that will not sue you. Worth the price of the book right there!

Secondly, in most acupuncture schools, gua sha is largely taught as a technique for wind-cold invasion or stiff necks. My practice has included alot of chronic musculo-skeletal pain due to old sport injuries and the such. Before reading this book, I limited the technique to scapular and upper back pain, but after reading it, have confidentally expanded gua sha to every sort of muscular injury with great results. I have saved a number of people from exploratory surgery by removing pains of unknown etiology, thru the use of this technique and proper muscle knowledge. This is why I recommend it for massage therapists, physical therapists as well as Oriental and TCM practitioners.

This book includes a resource area that gives you ideas for what areas of the body to address for various ailments, if you are afraid to experiment on your own, or on yourself. I believe, if you add a recently published companion book by the same publishers concerning cupping (Cupping Therapy by Chirall), you will have a compementary set of low cost therapies for muscular aches (not to mention some other internal medicine applications), that are a very effective addition for any TCM or massage practice.

For Maternal-Fetal Medicine Doctors and Gynecologic Oncologists, It Doesn't Get Any Better

Review Date: 2006-08-11
...not to mention pathologists might like it too. Each chapter is essentially as definitive as pathology texts dedicated to and serve as the definitive source on individual organs. High quality paper, clear and clinically relevant photos, and expertly written text. The passages are not so concise that you feel you are missing out on some trival, but possibly interesting information, yet they are not too lengthy either. The only thing I wish I could change would be color photos, but that would make this already extraordinarily expensive text beyond-comprehension-costly.
