In this well written and perfectly documented account the story of Churchill's relationship to Zionism is layed out through Churchill's own political rise and his own worldview. Zionism was to Churchill a positive element in the world. Churchill had been an early admirer of the Jews for their tenacity and their survival over the cneturies. With the advent of Zionism he became a supporter of this movement because he saw it as a meaningful challenge to Communism. With the rise of Nazism he saw that the threat to Jewish existence in Europe could be releived through Jewish migration to Palestine.

Churchill was a phenomenal character and his relationship with Zionism is one of the most interesting stories regarding his long life. This book exists alongside other discussions of the same material such as Martin Gilbert's Churchill and the Jews: A Lifelong Friendship but this book is fascinating for orienting Zionism vis-a-vis Churchill's own worldview and for providing a well written, fast paced discussion of the interplay between the two.

A very readable story of the 43rd Wessex Division. A day by day account from creation of the division, to the Normandy Landings, to the surrender of Germany and everything in between. Includes many black and white photographs, maps and drawings. Well worth reading.

No human being alive today knows Britain's legendary lion of a Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, than Martin Gilbert.

No account of Churchill's life is more audaciously complete than Gilbert's massive project called simply 'A Life'.

And what a life! Churchill famously failed at most things to which he put his hand until he became his besieged country's prime minister, just in time to succeed singularly in clawing a future out of nothing but isolation and darkness.

From childhood, through his adventures in the Boer War and on into a political career that was distinguished only by the alleged spectacular failure of the Dardanelles, Gilbert details a doomed life in astonishing detail. Then, the war, and it seemed that all of Churchill's life had prepared him for this dread moment, which Britain somehow alchemized into an exhausted victory.

Gilbert is an unashamed practioner of 'great men' historiography. It would be hard for a Churchill scholar to be otherwise, given its immense subject. Gilbert is the dean and monarch of Churchill scholarship, a point of reference to whom all others who would write on the topic necessarily allude.

Unless you have a large appetite, it might be wise to begin your reading of Winston Churchill elsewhere and with a somewhat slimmer volume. But by all means end up here.

Churchill was published in 1988. After 10 years, and seven printings, it is still in print through the publisher, Hyperion Press. Hyperion is located in Winnipeg, Manitoba at 204 256 9204. Over 10,000 copies of Churchill have been sold - primarily through outlets in Churchill, Manitoba, Polar Bear Capital of the world. Each year, thousands of tourists flock to Churchill to see the incredible wildlife (polar bears, whales, seals, birds, caribou, more, more, more). This book outlines a year in the life of Churchill.

I was the pharmacist in Churchill from 1981 through to 1988 (best one in town - only one). During that time I decided that what was needed was a book that captures the indomitable spirit of the people of the north - a true diary of the people, the modern industry, the history, the flora and the fauna. In 1997 I focused on the photographs taking almost a roll of film each day. Total frames shot = 7,000. Total pictures in the book = 135. In 1998 I focused on writing the text for the book and finding a publisher to partner with. 20 publishers said - "It won't sell." The 21st - Hyperion said "Let's do it." The rest, as they say, is history.

Enjoy - Churchill was a work of love for me. It's one of the most fascinating places in this incredible country - Canada.

I picked up this short biography of Churchill and found it very impressive. Even for students of Churchill, there is a lot of fascinating information, and the author makes a convincing case that he was indeed the statesman of the century. A great addition to my Churchill bookshelf!

to those around him, you will need to read Lord Moran's memoir. As his personal physician, Lord Moran knew more about Churchill than anyone ouside the statesman's family. An intimate portrait that relates Churchill's fate to his health, attitudes and ideosyncracies. Sets an example for those who would be discrete, yet truthful. Churchill's Boswell.

A photgraphic history of one of the greatest men in history

Review Date: 2006-12-31
Most people know Winston Churchill as the great leader who led Britain through what was its gravest crisis. In the last part of 1939 and the first part of 1940, Poland, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France had all fallen to the Germans. The Soviet Union had concluded an alliance with the Germans and Britain had just executed a glorious but ignominious retreat from Dunkirk. Therefore, Churchill's spirit of defiance and willingness to fight forever against the Nazis provided the leadership that the British and their allies needed.
However, it is generally forgotten that Churchill had led an extremely productive life before he became Prime Minister during the war. He had been a soldier and war correspondent during the Boer War in Southern Africa. His escape after being captured was his first moment in the sun, from that point on his was a household name. During the First World War he served as First Lord of the Admiralty until the ill-fated attempt to invade Turkey at Gallipolli. Churchill was also the author of many books and his was a lone voice against the rise of Fascism during the mid-thirties.
This book is a visual recapitulation of his life, from his early days in school to his last tenure as Prime Minister. While there were growing problems in the British Empire, the last part of the nineteenth and first part of the twentieth century was the peak of British power. That is evident in these photos. Churchill is brimming with confidence in the early years and in the darkest days of World War II, you can clearly see his dogged determination.
Photos without context tell an abbreviated and often inaccurate story. That is the case here, for if you don't know the whole story of Winston Churchill, then the significance of many of these photos will be lost. However, if you know the complete story of the life of Winston Churchill, then you will know the true meaning of each and every photo.
