Great reference text

This text is well worth the money. I have used it repeatedly for general transfusion med questions in the hospital and in dealings with the transfusion med committee. Although I have both, this book gets used much more than Mollison's text....the writing is clearer, and answers are simply easier to find.

Two Well-Crafted Plays

Caryl Churchill's Heart's Desire and Blue Kettle (both found in Blue Heart) may be a challenge to read, but both prove worth the effort. Simultaneously approaching the deconstruction of language and the deconstruction of the family and interpersonal relations, the two pieces leave nothing in question about Churchill's brilliance.

A Turn of the Century "Spenser for Hire"
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

If you enjoy any of Robert Parker's Spenser series, I would recommend this new series by Author Mike Ryan. "Cootch" Connolly is a probation officer in Boston at the turn of the century when Probation was a new concept. "Cootch" gets involved with a clandestine society and travels the streets of old Boston looking for answers to murders. It is a well written and well researched look into life in the early 1900's in Irish Boston. "Cootch" meets up with many of the big Irish politicians of the day and even ends up fighting side by side with a young Winston Churchill to solve the case.
I look forward to more stories about "Cootch" from author Mike Ryan. It is definately an enjoyable book.

Fascinating, Well-Told Story

According to me, the best history is read as biography, or best of all, as autobiography. Broad histories of countries, historical events or even so-called social history get bog-downed in minutaie and analytical discussions. I prefer personal history, even of unimportant people. This book is an exception, and I don't know why exactly.

Churchill Falls is, by capacity, the single largest hydroelectric site in Canada. Its development posed numerous engineering problems not the least of which was the long-distance transmission of electricity. Financing the project and getting the Newfoundland, Quebec and Canadian federal governments to agree posed problems of a different sort: human, ego and how to cut the proverbial cake. Some 30 years later, it's still an issue.

This book should be of interest to anyone connected to hydroelectricity. But that's not really the point. For the book also provides, if actions speak louder than words, a fascinating glimpse into the true political style of Joey Smallwood and the political changes ongoing in Quebec in the 1960s. To students of contemporary Canadian history, this book is a joy. And it has made me wonder if the best way to look at history is to see how different parties put together a complex deal.

Yifan Yang should write more books. She writes with much clarity and authority based obviously on her profound understanding of the TCM fundamentals. Anyone whether student, practicing physician would find this book a treasure to be kept as a reference and guide to their understanding of the TCM and its applications. Very very good work. I will not hesistate to purchase any of her future works. The precision and clarity of her words with regards to TCM Herbal Medicine is profound and illuminating. The best Churchill picture book
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-05
The bookshelves of the world are bowed low with books about Sir Winston Churchill -- biographies, analyses, defenses, debunkings, plus collected speeches, articles, and other writings. And there's no shortage of life-in-pictures books, either. Of the later category, I have no hesitation in declaring that this one is the best. Any Churchillophile (and there are lots of us) should be sure to add this to his collection.

There are two primary reasons this title is so good. One is the vast number of photos collected between its covers. The second is the fact that the collector, and commentator, is Churchill's official biographer, Martin Gilbert, the man who arguably knows Churchill better than anyone now living (with the possible exception of his daughter, Lady Mary Soames). Not only is Gilbert's selection of photos excellent and illustrative, but his discussion of them is as well. As an accompaniment to the Official Biography, or any of the spate of other recent biographies, this book shouldn't be missed.
