This book is a must have for any Aagtha Christie Fan. It talks of all her works in a detailed form, and mentions anything you might have missed when reading one of her books. Plus it has many side notes on how she came up with the idea for her books and short stories. It also contains her quests to find information on items in her books, i.e. poison. It tells a lot of her life too. In short I really enjoy this book and find something new in it everyday.

A beautiful collection of poems.

Review Date: 1997-08-14
At the end of the millennium, many are concerned with the elegaic. A.V. Christie has put together a collection of poems that holds at its core a loss, and the most amazing thing about this collection is the fact that loss never becomes a spectacle, something willfully sentimental. The emotions we are given are true, not falsified, not high drama, and for that, they are all the more moving. A beautiful collection of poems. I suspect we will be seeing much more of Ms. Christie's work in the future. NINE SKIES was selected by Sandra McPherson as one of the winning manuscripts in The National Poetry Series.

Poirot at the top of his game.
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-12
Death comes within kissing distance of Hercule Poirot when his dentist is mysteriously killed shortly after Poirot visits him. The murder seems difficult to solve initially because Morley was such a harmless man-- who would murder a dentist, after all? It becomes even more difficult later when it becomes apparent that there were a plethora of possible suspects, and a web of motive that reaches deep into the changing society.

This book does one, and only one, thing: present the most relevant research on play and its role in the development of literacy in young children. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less.

Check it out! It's a gem for any early childhood professional whether you believe in a play-based teaching pedagogy or not.

An unpleasant family...and an amazing last page...

A good Miss Marple mystery. Though Miss Marple is not mentioned in it as often as I'd expect. At the center of a mystery is a very unpleasant family. They are not likeable characters. The plot twists got me again, and the murderer turned out to be someone I did not want it to be! The very last page is priceless. Reading the last page made the whole book worthwhile. Don't know how Christie does that...

Not Christie's very best but still good

I love Agatha Christie's Tommy and Tuppence Beresford's books normally, but Postern of Fate has a plot that kind of rambles. Tommy and Tuppence are retired and living in their new house when Tuppence finds a message in an old book written many years ago by a schoolboy: "I think I know who killed Mary Jordan. It was one of us." I admit it has a great beginning, but because the crime was committed so many years ago it is does not hold your attention so well. It is for people who are big fans of Christie, but if you want a classic of hers I recommend Murder on the Orient Express or A.B.C. Murders. Postern of Fate is still a great book though!

"Pass Not Beneath"
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-26
While best known for her aged sleuths Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie also fashioned mysteries featuring a married couple named Tommy and Tuppence Beresford. "Postern of Fate" is one of their later adventues, the couple having retired from their life of somewhat secret service, to reside in a quiet country house in need of a little tender loving care. But nothing is as it seems to be in this quaint seaside village, and a mysterious past refuses to remain buried.

The intrigue begins when Tuppence finds a coded message inside an old children's book, ominously decoded as "Mary Jordan did not die naturally". Well, naturally, Tuppence wants to find out all she can about this Mary Jordan and how she did die, which sets her to interviewing village residents about events that happened during the first World War. Tommy becomes intrigued by his wife's exploits, and uses his work associates to track down information, learning quickly that Mary Jordan was a spy who sold secrets to naval officers, but not finding any reason why anyone would want to kill her. As this elderly pair search further into the mystery surrounding their new house and something that might be hidden there, they find themselves and those close to them targets of someone who wishes the past to remain secret.

Agatha Christie was a master storyteller, always capable of weaving brilliant and intriguing mysteries. "Postern of Fate" is not one of her best for there is too little action and a lot of conversation. The dialogues between Tommy and Tuppence seem stilted and repetitive, a lot of so-called evidence is repeated for the readers, and nothing seems to actually happen until the last third of the book. The last chapter is devoted to a cursory summary of the past events of intrigue, which will leave the readers hungry for more answers than have been given, for the solution doesn't fit the buildup of the crime. An ingenious premise of a coded message from the past falls a little flat with the yarn that Christie spun in this tale, perhaps proving that Tommy and Tuppence's best cases were earlier on in their lives.

"Pollensa Bay" a Treat for all Christie addicts
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-30
This Christie is a surprising treat for loyal fans. It comprises of eight short stories. Two of which are from the familiar egg headed detective Poirot, "The second gong" and "Yellow Iris" The later of the two involves Poirot being mysteriously called to a restaurant by an unknown lady caller in danger. Poirot has to discover who the caller is and the looming danger. Both these stories like the majority in this collection originally appeared in the Strand magazine. Mr Parker Pyne "The one and only original wizard", appears in two delightful tales which focus on the dapper English gent, solving a problem of the heart In "Problem at Pollensa Bay" and the mysterious disappearance of a diamond in "The Regatta mystery". The first of the two stories was my particular favourite as Christie explores the mystery of relationships in quite a comical almost Wodehousian style. This story shows us what a good sense of humour and keen wit Christie had. The Mr Satterthwaite and Harley Quin double act is really different. Mr Satterthwaite is helped by the supernatural presence of Mr Harley Quin, in "The Harlequin tea set" and "the love detectives". Mr Quin aids Mr Satterthwaite in solving puzzles by slowly revealing and suggesting things to both Mr Satterthwaite and the reader. The most surprising stories are the last two, "Next to a dog" and "Magnolia Blossom." Neither follow Christies usual tale of murder, however they are both morbid and serious. The stories explore the sombre side of life and are perhaps showing what the author thought about relationships she had experienced.. I enjoyed this selection of short stories because it is such an eclectic mixture of tales, illustrating the versatile talent of Christies writing. I would recommend this book both to newcomers to her writing and an unexpected welcome to those familiar with her work.
